Panasonic 10.1 Megapixel Black Digital Camera - DMCLX5K

New High Sensitivity CCD and F2.0 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON LENS

DMC-LX5 is fully re-designed in the lens, the CCD and the image processing engine together with other improvements and upgrades. The newly developed super bright F2.0 ultra wide angle 24mm LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens minimizes distortion for stunning, true-to-life images with outstanding resolution and detail. The 24mm wide angle offers extraordinarily large viewing space and now the optical zoom is extended to 3.8x(90mm) making the LX5 even more versatile.

F2.0 Super Bright 24mm Ultra-Wide-Angle* High Quality LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON Lens with Minimum Distortion

The DMC-LX5 is equipped with newly developed F2.0 24mm ultra-wide-angle LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMICRON lens with even higher resolution. The super bright, high quality lens is redesigned for extension of the optical zoom from LX3s 2.5x(60mm) to 3.8x(90mm) to be even more versatile for snapshots including portraits. The F2.0 lens is about twice as bright as the F2.8 lens, itself generally considered a bright lens. The result is a higher shutter speed can be used to capture stunningly clear, sharp, blur-free images in lower lighting situation. This advanced lens also makes it easy to produce beautiful photos with pleasing soft-focused background thanks to the shallow depth of field provided by the extra light. Also, the 24mm ultra-wide-angle lens - rare on a compact camera - gives photographers a wider range of composition possibilities. The super-high-quality LEICA DC VARIO- SUMMICRON lens minimizes distortion at the wide end, so users can get stunning, true-to-life images with outstanding resolution and detail. The LX5 captures approx. 213% larger viewing space compared to that of normal 35mm cameras, and approx. 136% larger compared to that of 28mm wide-angle lenses.

*35mm film camera equivalent: 24-90mm

1/1.63-inch 10.1-megapixel High Sensitivity CCD with Wider Dynamic Range

The predecessor DMC-LX3 played a big role to cease the pixel count war by adopting 1/1.63-inch CCD for 10.1-megapixel recording to realize the unprecedented picture quality with a compact digital camera and even to establish a new premium compact camera category in the market. The CCD in the LX3, which was highly acclaimed from specialists worldwide, is redesigned to achieve further expansion of dynamic range by increasing the sensitivity by approx. 31% and the saturation by approx.38%*. It is made possible by the improvement of on-tip-lens design with larger light concentration and VCCD expansion while deepening the photo diode to manage richer signal more effectively. The result is a high resolution, noise-less pictures even in high sensitivity recording and richly reproduced gradation in highly contrasted situations with the exquisitely wide dynamic range. Taking advantage of the high sensitivity CCD and the brightness of the lens, minimum illumination of DMC-LX5 is as low as 3 lux in movie recording.

*Panasonic in-house comparison with DMC-LX3.

Save Memories in Movie - Start Enjoying Videography As You Enjoy Photography

In addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-LX5 can record high-definition motion picture in AVCHD Lite. It features almost doubling the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG format. The picture quality is greatly enhanced thanks to the newly added Intelligent Resolution technology. The LX5 also features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio. In movie recording, the DMC-LX5 goes further than simply recording HD movies. Apart from the movie recording capability of conventional digital compact cameras, the DMC-LX5 also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subject. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out. My Color mode is also available in movie recording.

I've tried a lot of point and shoot cameras and this one has the best combination of image quality and features of them all. If you own a dSLR and want something smaller that provides great image quality, or if you are looking to upgrade your current P&S, this is an excellent choice. Because it's so easy to use, it's great for beginners, advanced amateurs, pros and anyone in between. I'm very happy with my purchase and highly recommend this camera. Be sure to take the time to read the manual and learn about all of the features and how to use them to get the most out of it.

Comments about Panasonic 10.1 Megapixel Black Digital Camera:

I would classify myself as a semiprofessional photographer. In addition to a non photography day job I earn a couple of grand a month as a stringer for local newspapers. My news related photos have also been published in magazines. I don't consider myself an artist but am very adept at pointing a camera in the right direction at the right time and understanding and operating all camera controls. For some strange reason people focus on camera specifications and IQ in tedious studio situations. The number one reason outstanding shots are missed is that the camera was not with you. The number two reason outstanding shots are missed is that you failed to set up the camera properly in time. The number three reason outstanding shots are missed is that the camera failed to focus or the shutter speed was too slow to overcome subject motion. With the exception of some older camera phones IQ and everything else camera reviews focus on is NEVER the reason great photos are missed Panasonic has the quickest and best camera operating interface on the market and at F2.4 one of the fastest lenses on the advanced compact market. Their white balance functions in auto mode flawlessly except under fluorescent lighting which is problematic. There is no lag on any control on the camera and focus is quick for this class of camera. I mostly use a 6 grand DSLR when stringing but only because they have the edge in low light and make me look more serious. Of the pictures I like best when not on the job professionally, the LX5 was used for 90% of them The ONLY reason I don't still own the LX5 is I traded up into an LX7 There are no cons, the LX5 is an outstanding camera and a joy to shoot. Full spread of manual controls. Many artistic controls. Very fast and responsive operation. Logical and quick user interface. Fabulous automatic modes. Fun to operate. Easy to customize.

Comments about Panasonic 10.1 Megapixel Black Digital Camera:

I am a photo enthusiast and I've used this camera for over a year and am constantly amazed at how well it's built and the quality of the pictures. I was looking for a small portable camera that can take high quality photographs in just about any situation. I mainly use the artistic selections which allows for wonderful color and black and white pictures. I recommend the viewfinder, a lens cap that opens when you turn on the camera and a lens shade. I sometimes shoot in raw with wonderful results. The main problem with the camera is that I'm still learning its features and benefits. I guess that's normal for a sophisticated camera as the LX5.

Comments about Panasonic 10.1 Megapixel Black Digital Camera:

After researching cameras with features I wanted and seeing some in person, I purchased the LX5 on the salesman's recommendation. I've owned lots of cameras over the years and I couldn't be happier with my new Lumix. It has full manual controls, pop-up flash AND a hot shoe, and lots of cool scene modes. It's lightweight, compact and easy to use, real plusses since I take my camera everywhere. It compares favorably with my previous camera that just died after 6 years and has additional features as well. It also takes great available light pictures - I went to an evening indoor party recently and got nice pictures without using the flash.

I have had this camera for a year now and it is easily the best camera I have ever owned. I sometimes use it for digiscoping through a Celestron 100 mm Regal HD scope with a home mode PVC adapter. It takes great pictures in raw and other modes. I have taken some amazing macro photos with it.. The Silkypix software for developing the raw pictures is super versatile. I threw away the lens cover and bought the Lumix lens adapter DMW LA6. This allows you to install a optically clear glass filter to cover the lens. I did buy a extra battery and a high end memory card.

Images, images, images. This camera just makes beautiful images. I don't even bother with RAW mode. I use Dynamic B&W and Vibrant color modes mostly - and they just look beautiful. I don't mind the lens cap - I don't think they could make the lens this good if it retracted all the way into the body. I rather have the high-quality lens. The cap comes with a little tether that attaches to a strap lug, so I won't lose it. The new 90mm tele length is very nice to have. The only thing I can think of to improve this little gem would be GPS. When I travel, I take so many pictures it's hard to keep track of where they were. I'd love a GPS in the next version - I will buy it!!

I like this camera, but lost the lens cap after only 2 weeks. Can't seem to find any replacement. Panasonic should build the lens cap into the next version of this camera and make the lens a little less bulky so that you can slip it in your pocket.

I took this camera and a new Nikkon p7000 on a photo shoot. The results were very interesting. The LX5 made more beautiful images than the Nikkon. It wasn't even close. I really love the pinhole, film grain, and dynamic B&W settings. Next time I'll leave the Nikkon at home and stick with the Panasonic.
