Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera - SLTA55VL

Change the way you shoot pictures with Sony's new Translucent Mirror Technology™ DSLR camera. The SLT-A55V a DSLR camera features professional-grade continuous shooting at 10 fps and visibly faster, more accurate focus in Live View and HD Movie modes. Compose your shots on either the LCD monitor or electronic viewfinder with 100% framing accuracy. Advanced features including Auto HDR, Sweep Panorama and 15-point Auto Focus make it dramatically easier to get the best shot.

Features:

  • Unprecedented Image Capture Unlike other DSLRs that can either shoot or focus with the speed and precision of Phase Detection AF, the SLT-A55V is the world's first DSLR that can do both simultaneously1. Featuring an unprecedented Translucent Mirror, the a55V DSLR camera is able to feed both the image sensor and the Phase Detection at the same time.
  • Professional Class Shooting Speeds By transforming the fundamental way DSLR cameras work, you'll experience best-in-class speed3, up to 10 fps continuous shooting at full 16.2MP resolution with exposure fixed at the first frame. This is made possible by a Translucent Mirror that always stays in place. You also get standard continuous shooting at up to 6 fps.
  • Astonishing HD Video Capture Experience a revolutionary breakthrough in video capture when shooting fast-moving subjects. The a55V is the world's first camera with the precision of Phase Detection auto focus (AF) for HD Movies. Translucent Mirror Technology not only enables full-time phase-detection AF for photos, it also delivers the same speed and precision for Full HD movies.
  • Spectacular Resolution and Detail Featuring a large 16.2-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, you'll achieve beautiful image quality during both still-photo and movie shooting. Rich tonal gradation and highlight/shadow detail are assured by the BIONZ image processing engine which supports high-speed continuous shooting, advanced digital compositing, and Full HD movie recording.
  • Advanced Still Shooting Expand your creativity with advanced imaging features including built-in Auto HDR, which captures more scene contrast by combining the best highlight detail from one shot and the best shadow detail into one unbelievable shot. Map your journey via an integrated GPS receiver, or use 3D Sweep Panorama Mode to automatically capture expansive landscapes.
  • Versatile Shooting Options Use both the LCD monitor and Electronic Viewfinder to compose your shots. An all-electronic design enables a wide range of shooting information to be displayed in the finder and on the LCD monitor. Both provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus on-screen displays.

I just got this camera, and as someone who's used high-end point and shoots and low-end SLRs, I am floored by the quality of this camera for the price. I slapped an old Minolta lens on this and got the best shots I've gotten in my life with no effort. The auto-mode is so good that it's hard to beat it with manual settings. One reviewer does not like the live view because he says it's bad for the studio, but in any circumstance I've shot in, the live view is an amazing feature which helps me understand how my settings will affect the final outcome. The LCD on this one puts the Samsung dual-view point and shoot concept to shame with the ability to turn the LCD completely around so you can see the shot from the front of the camera. I'm also impressed by the logic of the viewfinder to shut off the LCD when you put your face forward. No need to press a button. All of the settings were easy to figure out for anyone who knows their way around a camera, and I was working with it easily within 10 minutes. My main negative observation right now is that the camera will refuse to take a shot if it's not happy with the focus. For example, if you put a telephoto lens on it and tried to take a picture too close where the camera was still not in focus, it will not open the shutter and will just insist on getting a better focus. 99% of the time this will not matter to anyone, as most people don't want a blurry shot. There may be a way to override this. You should also get a second battery with it as you will run low after a few hours of continuous use. Overall, this is a new camera and time will tell me a lot more about how good it is, but from my initial impressions, this baby is a much better value than the NEX series, even if it's a bit larger, and is probably the best value for your money on the market, rivaled only by maybe the T2i. I'm no expert in pro photography, but this is my humble impression of the SLT-A55.

I've had this camera for 1 month now and have been using it a lot. When outside, the camera performs well. Now for the problem.... as a semi-professional photographer, I do a lot of studio work using external flash (strobes). When the camera is set to MANUAL, both the live view and viewfinder images are dark! I understand why it's happening (the camera is showing me the image will be underexposed), however, with external flashes, the image IS exposed perfectly. Since I can't see the subject, I can't focus on what I want to. For the life of me, I can't understand why Sony would make a product that proves useless in a studio setting. The whole point of using the MANUAL setting is to have full control over the process. This issue makes the camera a glorified toy best used in light or on-board flash (so the camera knows the flash is there and adjusts automatically). Sony support was NO help and I doubt I'll buy another Sony product (since I'm still on the phone with them most of the day). Buy at own risk.

Very good but with more manual

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I have been playing with this camera for only a few weeks now. I am loving it. I am still learning about what it can do. There are a few things I wish this camera had and did not have. For HDR mode I wish the camera did not make the picture and was more like other makes where the camera took 5 shots and you have to use software to make a HDR photo. Also wish their was a dial on the front and back. Having to hold down a button and use the dial at the same time a little harder but worse slower. To give us that extra dial please just remove the flash. It is just not that useful at all. A external flash is a must.

My best Sony camera

By Denny69JMark

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

This is my second Sony camera. I previously owned and gave to my wife my Sony a380. My purchase of the Sony SLT-A55V is perhaps the best purchase of a product I have ever made. I love the fact that it takes panoramic and 3D panoramic pictures. I also like the fact that all the menu items are also very convenient to use. The images that I have taken with the A55 have been just fantastic whether using manual mode or any other mode for that matter. The auto and auto+ feature is just great for taking pictures in a hurry where you don't have the time to set the camera up. All-in-all, this camera is just the most for the money in my opinion. If you want to make pictures and not just take pictures, this is the camera to do it with.

I love this camera, BUT.......

Cons

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I bought the A55 when it first came out and have loved it even more than my T2i. BUT, I never really did much with the video until was filming something very important about a month ago and noticed that it has the same loud clicking noise that people also pointed out on the NEX camera. It is recorded on audio when the camera is refocusing. and is really distracting. Was a huge disappointment since I know I won't be able to use it for important things. Too bad because was thinking of getting the A65 when it is released, but may hold off and see what Canon is bringing and if they have corrected the problem.

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

This camera exceeded my expectations. This camera is what the Sony family needed in order to compete with the Nikon and Canon lineup. I'm a semi-professional photographer who specializes in weddings. Its about time Sony takes its place in the DSLR market as a serious competitor. This camera proves you don't have be part of the band wagon to produce excellent photos. The ISO range and quality is amazing. The HDR function adds another weapon to this family. The only two issues I have is because I'm a big guy the body is rather small. The other problem that I have is, hopefully the design team of this camera is listening, WE NEED A BATTERY GRIP! The battery life of this camera is horrible. On a ten hour day wedding, I need at least eight batteries and a rapid 1 hour charger to feel comfortable for that day. I'm asking the development team personally to help us with a battery grip. Other than those two issues, I highly recommend this product. Good job Sony!

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I both this last march 2011 and been using it for few months now. I paired it with SAL 18-250mm and the picture quality is amazing. I'm glad i did not buy it with the kit lense and save me some bucks as well. Video quality is very good although for short film because it over-heats but not a big deal for me because i primarily using it for photography. Battery is a bad thing you might want to get extra. This may not be comfortable for people with big hands because it is smaller than a regualr DSLR (w/c i gave it four star) I will probably get used to it in a long run. Overall its an excellent product. Its sony anyway....!!! Sample pics was taken with A55 paired with SAL-18-250mm.

I am no expert. I bought this camera because I was tired of missing shots of my 4 year old daughter; that does not happen anymore with the translucent lens and 10 fps! This camera is so easy to use, and I get a great shot almost every time. The video mode is also excellent quality and simple to use! You can not go wrong with the Sony a55

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I made an safari to Kenya in 1999 with family and used a Minolta 7xi. After that I pretty much stopped taking pictures. In 2009, I got a chance to return to Kenya and bought a Sony a350 for the trip. I fell in love with digital and have been doing a lot of photography since. On that trip, I discovered that I needed two cameras; one with a short zoom and the second with a long zoom. I missed too many shots switching lenses. Last year, I went to Fox to get a second camera body. They told me that Sony was coming out with the a55, but they did not have one. I pre-ordered one direct from Sony. It is one fantastic camera. I shoot mostly outdoors and the live view is bright enough that I can see it in bright sun light. With the a350, I was limited to using the view finder in bright sun. I am left-eyed and when I use the view finder on the a350, my nose leaves an oily smear on the live view screen. With the swiveling live view screen on the a55, I leave the nose smear on the back of the screen. I mostly shoot from a tripod in manuel mode, but the internal stabilizer is excellent for those hurry up and shoot before it gets away hand held shots. The more I use my a55, the more I like it. Picture quality is very sharp and the stationary mirror keeps it quiet.
I can't comment on some features of this camera because I don't use them. If I wanted to take videos, I would get a video camera. I also don't use face recognition/smile or panorama modes. I have used the 10 fps mode but was not overly impressed with the results. It uses such a high ISO setting to get super-fast shutter speeds that the results are a little grainy.
Sony needs to add some accessories for this camera. I am returning to Kenya next year. I will be spending from fout to six days at a time in tent camps with no electricity. I would like to see a batery charger like the one for the a350 that will charge two batteries at once and will work from a 12 volt source as well as 120 AC. A battery pack would also be nice.

Comments about Sony A55 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I love this camera, it has been such a pleasure to shoot with the new a55, I tell just about everyone about it. Ive heard they are making a battery grip for it, that would be amazingly helpful. I have a good amount of Minolta AF lenses that I use with this camera and it does wonders, Ive been getting superb results.
