Almost perfect!

This is my fourth set of Duet washer/dryer combos, so I feel qualified to give a trustworthy review. I've followed the increasing quality/features of these Duets, and paid top dollar over and over again for what I thought was state-of-the-art function, only to lament why this or that wasn't included. Well, this washer seems to have fixed all that was wrong with the previous washers. Finally - a liquid detergent function that does not leak if you pour the liquid in for more than a minute before starting the load. Finally - a lighted drum for the washer. Finally - Fanfresh! (hadn't every other manufacturer previously introduced this in their top-end models?) And look - a way to program your own cycles - superb!! Precision dispense (and a way to adjust those settings dependent on your detergent and water hardness level), 1500 RPM extracts, water that goes "mostly" on the clothes, the amazing amount of wash cycles, and the LCD color panel are all amazing and deserved in this top-of-the-line model. Therefore, my quibbles are few - but I do have some. Whirlpool developers must work on a way to get water temperature up to proper temp for each cycle (many people live in places where hot water must run for a while to get hot, and Whirlpool needs some sort of sensor that works for this purpose). Some of the other Duets have "pretended" to have this but none appear to be getting it right. This is especially important for the cleaning (Affresh) cycle. Also, continue on getting more of water out the spout to pour directly on the clothes - too much water still pours onto the seal and/or the inside of the door. Also, the end-of-cycle "buzzer" is hardly a buzzer, and I ask for a return to (or at least an option for) something more brash and less melodic to signify that I need to get up and empty the washer. Is there a way we can make water draining quieter? It is still quite noisy. Also, the ability to program more than 7 custom cycles would be appreciated (I hit this limit the first day, when I washed everything I owned). Finally a way to upgrade functionality or screen colors/themes via USB (or some sort of connectivity) is needed at this point (other manufacturers have this capability). Other than these minor quibbles, Whirlpool really nailed it with this washer. If you're sitting on the fence about getting one, don't. You will not regret it. Just read the manual first, run clean cycles regularly, DON'T USE NON-HE DETERGENT, and leave the door open after every wash. They've really come a long way with these Duets since the 9100s and those belt-driven nightmares! Can' t wait to see what you do for Duet's 10th anniversary!

Not Ideal!

Purchased this washer in June 2008. It was recently damaged from water entering the basement and I was looking to replace it with a similar model. It cleaned well, although the cycles were long. The door was kept open to avoid mold from forming. A problem many owners described.

This time I noticed all of the comments about torn clothes. I was always puzzleed about how my clothing would tear. New underwear, new sheets, all of good quality, would come out with holes, tears. One pair of pants shredded. It was not a new pair, so I attributed that item to age. After reading the comments, now I understand why the clothing was torn. I just didn't believe that a washer could tear clothes. I had never experienced that before and I have used many washing machines. In addition, this was probably the most expensive one that I had ever used-over $1000.00 dollars. Unfortunately, I had never looked into the situation because of lack of time.

Just thought I should verify what others are saying. Even the other Whirlpool models have this complaint. Whirlpools needs to correct this. I'll be looking for another brand for a new washer. I'll pay more attention to the comments before purchasing next time.

I love this washer. It has tons of great features, lots of different wash settings and options, and my clothes are consistently clean (and it doesn't "eat" baby socks like some font load washers do). The best part for me is that you can program your own wash settings, and you can start with one of theirs as a "base", so since I want all my clothes to go on a second rinse I can set up a cycle with that option, I don't have to change it every time I start a new load. The only issues I have with it, are extremely minor, but worth mentioning. The sound of the washer locking and unlocking is a loud metallic click, and since my washer is adjacent to my baby's bedroom I have to be careful about when I do laundry since it's a resounding sharp sound, it can wake her from a nap (though she is a lighter sleeper). Also, the washer comes with a precision dispenser for liquid detergent, which is great if you use liquid, but if you prefer powder, as I do, every time you start a wash cycle it asks you if you're using the precision dispenser, and every time I have to hit no, and then hit "Start" again. It would be great if there was a place to turn that off globally in the settings menu, or if the washing machine could detect if it was in the machine or not. We leave the door open after we remove a load to make sure the machine dries properly, and so far we haven't had any issues with some of the more common complaints with front load washers, like a mildew smell. I would definitely recommend this to a friend!

Really like the precision dispense, only need to add detergent every other week. The capacity has allowed us to cut the number of loads we do from 6 to 3 times a week. Clothes come out practically dry. Excellent machine.

My washer recently died, and while shopping for a new one, decided to purchase a new set instead of just a washer. We had one of the very first high efficiency models that were made (bought in 2001). It was time to upgrade. I am extremely pleased we did purchase a set, not just the washer. This dryer far exceeds my expectations. It was a little scary at first, just looking at the control panel. But it didn't take long to figure it out. Frankly it is quite simple to use...and even simple to adjust the standard settings. It is very intuitive. But best of all, this dryer will dry a normal load of clothes in approx 20 minutes less time than the old dryer. Well worth the money spent to receive the energy savings in the long run. Had the dryer about a month, and no problems thus far.

We had a 10 year old set of Duet washers and, wow, what a difference. These are so much quieter and all but vibration free. We love the detergent dispenser and one recommendation I would make is do the same thing with fabric softener. I worry about how many open/close cycles the seal on the detergent tank will take before we start to see leaks. If the fabric softener had the same sort of tank. A person wouldn't have to open the drawer at all except on the rare occasion you might need to add bleach. The spin cycle is so fast that drying times are reduced. The dryer is usually done in less than 30 mins. And the increased spin speed come with less vibration. We've only had the washer for about a month but so far, it's impressive.
