If you don’t read the manual and follow the instructions you will not like this device, period. Not to going far from the point this is a smart washer (meaning there’s a computer in the device like your cell phone). The computer runs the washer; therefore it has a check list called POST (Power On Self Test) and then it runs a routine (the cycles). The 1st step is to level the washer so the computer can take an accurate reading. Because it does not have an agitator you have to keep the center clear to allow the computer to set the water level. It’s low water level in conjunction with the vibration of the tub cleans the clothes. If the computer does not get a correct reading then the whole process is off; End Result no clean clothes or clothes not dry at the end of cycle. Or something like that you get the picture. Again you must first start with leveling the device for the computer. (Levers are cheap at any hardware store) Next the detergent goes in 1st not last and the recommendation is LE (Low Energy) detergent but any detergent that I used has worked just fine. Ok, so with all that said, “This has to be one of the best washing machine/devices that I own. The thing is just down right smart and at the end of the day my clothes are clean. If you are smarter than the device you win and that’s that. Reading is fundamental. I LOVE this machine period. Oh, and the dryer is not bad either…

I tried to use this machine for light clothing and light bedding. I have had to call for service on it TWO TIMES already â€" the first time at 35 LOADS and now again LESS THAN 10 LOADS LATER!! Its problem centers around the 'lid lock' and 'sensing' functions. This time it won't even allow the repairman to run a diagnostic. If the lid won't lock, the machine won't run. It has also left dry spots on clothes and HE detergent residue on the clothes intermittently from day one: the troubleshooter section of the owners manual says 'if it does this, add more water to the load'.... Well â€" when it works right - the machine lid locks & it fills according to the weight of your laundry. You can't 'add more water to the washer' in any way: there is no 'load size' or 'water level' control. When I was researching reviews on many diferent sites in Dec./Jan., there were virtually no negative comments to be found online, but now I find many. If I had known that there would be this kind of trouble with this brand-new HE Maytag, I would have NEVER paid the extra $$: I would have bought a much cheaper unit. My last Maytag washer lasted 20 years - and I really used it! I only opted to replace it because of its age, and I truly regret it.

Comments about Maytag Centennial MVWC400XW White Top Load Washer:
The only thing that concerns me is all the electronic controls - will they last. You have sensors for how much water to let in the machine. A lid lock. You can't add extra clothing to the load without restarting the machine. Seems like overkill on stuff like that. But I am happy so far with the overall working of the machine.

Has new features which need getting used to
from Superior, WI
I think it's harder to load because of not having a high agitator, but you get used to it. I do like that it weighs the cloths and fills accordingly, thus saving water.
deos not clean
This product is very disappointing. It is loud.It does not clean well, often have residue on the clothes when the cycle is complete. The clothes gets tangled and has to be untangled before it can be put in the poor performing Maytag dryer I purchased. The capacity is fair less than my previous machine.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Very effective washing. The only inconvenience is that you have to manually stop the machine (which would take probably 30 seconds or more) during the washing process if you want to look at the clothes. Lid automatically locks before the washing starts.
ease of use!

Great washer, just load you clothes, shut the lid, hit a button and let the machine take over!
We bought this washer after our old one broke. It was an adjustment as this was the new HE washer. My daughter has never liked it, swears the clothes don't come clean. The worst part is, after about a year and a half, the washer won't spin. The lid will lock and I cannot get the clothes (that are still soaking wet) out. HATE, HATE, HATE this washer. Now I am going to have to pay Maytag to fix a washer that clearly has flaws (google Maytag washer won't spin). Run, don't walk, away from Maytag products.
A good product

This machine washes quickly, and spins so thoroughly that it takes much less time to dry. Easy to operate.
Worst washer I have ever owned
This washer was purchased for me and my wife as a gift. we have owned it for almost two years. in the time that we have had it i have had to have it repaired 3 times because the drive belt keeps falling off and destroying a pulley. it is extremely loud and has never cleaned clothing that are actually dirty. all in all I think that i may replace this with a traditional washer as the these"HE" washers don't seem to do the job they were designed for. here is what I left for customer service "the quality of this machine is deplorable. replacement parts are expensive and still made out of plastic so they will do the same thing. in addition this washer cannot even clean the laundry when it does work and i commonly have to run the washer two or three times before the water stops being filthy. go back to using metal parts and abandon the "HE" craze i never had this issue with the 20 year old maytag my parents used to have."
Great features, saves energy, uses less water and detergent and it washes the clothes clean.

Quiet, I don't hear it running when outside the laundry room, I could hear the old unit upstairs. We purchased the pair several months ago. The washer uses much less water and detergent, we noticed the difference on our bill. It has all the selections we could possibly want, the clothes come out clean, the spin cycle wrings the water out very well, which cuts down on drying time. We think it is a great clothes washer.
I was surprised at quality design, efficiency, and the savings it has endowed upon me.

I bought this to replace my old washer that died. I was amazed on the tub size, its water saving ability to load weight, and how it cut my power consumption and water consumption also. This was the best investment I ever bought and was so impressed that I bought the dryer to work hand-in-hand with it.
