Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Violet 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera, Model COOLPIXS6100VLT

Features:

Powerful
Finally, a camera you can take everywhere you go. The COOLPIX S6100 is small enough to fit in a purse, pocket, or glove compartment—and powerful enough to capture landscapes, close ups, and portraits. This compact camera has a 16.0-megapixel CCD sensor that captures sharp, stunning images—along with a 7x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens that boasts a 28-196mm optical zoom to get close to the action. It’s ideal for day trips, weekend getaways, and last minute outings.

Touch the screen. Get the shot. Share the smiles.
The COOLPIX S6100 is ready to shoot whenever you are. Just take it out of your pocket and frame your photo or movie in the three-inch high resolution 460,000-dot touch monitor. Then touch the screen to adjust, focus, and shoot. It’s that simple. The COOLPIX S6100 includes in-camera Picture Editing, so you have access to Nikon technologies like Quick Retouch, Active D-Lighting, Soft Focus, and many others. This camera even tracks moving subjects, automatically keeping them in focus and minimizing motion blur. And the screen’s brightness control and anti-glare coating make it easy to compose, view, and share your photos—you can even watch them in a slide show, complete with music.

One-touch HD movie recording
When a still picture doesn’t tell the whole story, turn your COOLPIX S6100 into a movie camera with the push of a single button. Instantly you’ll have HD 720p movies, complete with stereo sound. And you won’t miss a thing because you can zoom out to capture broad landscapes or pull in for tight shots and close ups. Better still, watching and sharing your movies couldn’t be easier, since the COOLPIX S6100 has an HDMI output for simple hookup to an HDTV or computer.

On the road, on the go, in your pocket!
Meet your ultimate travel companion: the ultra-slim COOLPIX S6100. It’s a mere 1.1 inches thin and weighs only 6.2 ounces. It’s so light you can slip it into your pocket and take it to the park for a family outing, an outdoor concert, or a day at the beach. Plus, it’s available in silver, black, red, and violet, so it’s as fashionable as it is portable.

Fashion elegance. Nikon excellence.
The COOLPIX S6100 is brimming with the Nikon technologies that make it a breeze to shoot high caliber photos. Its four-way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System automatically reduces the streaky images associated with shaky cameras. And its motion detector spots moving subjects and adjusts the camera’s settings to ward off motion blur. You’re sure to get crystal clear shots regardless of lighting conditions because the camera boasts ISO speeds up to 3200. And, with Nikon’s Best Shot Selector, you press the shutter once. The camera then takes 10 shots and selects the sharpest image.

Convenient Features
Carry the COOLPIX S6100 in your pocket or purse and it will always be on hand to take great shots. Its Smart Portrait System includes Smile Timer, which releases the shutter when a subject smiles. The COOLPIX S6100 also has Blink Proof technology, allowing you to capture two shots and save the one with eyes open. The COOLPIX S6100’s, in-camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects most instances of red-eye as you shoot. Face-Priority focuses on up to 12 faces and Skin Softening smoothes out skin tones.

Whether hiking in a park, or sitting at an outdoor café, you can easily capture crisp, detailed shots with the COOLPIX S6100. You also have your choice of 20 different Scene Modes to match your setting, or you can simply let Scene Auto Selector select one for you. Plus, it comes with a rechargeable Li-ion battery that lasts for approximately 210 pictures. .

A great camera camera that takes incredibly sharp shots and has a remarkably powerful zoom. Just cannot understand why its designer (s) made such a poor judgment of placing the flash where the left index finger helps to firmly hold the camera... Just DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE! Consequently, many shots are wasted as a result of our finger preventing the flash to pop up. Uhmmmm

I bought this camera in May 2011 for a work camera to use as a construction superintendent. I take an average of 40 pictures a day (with a range of 20 - 200 photos per day). In the past I have owned similar Canon, older Nikons, Panasonics, and Olympus point and shoot cameras. I also have a Nikon DSLR for personal hobby use. Typically the point and shoot cameras I have had last me about a year, which is not bad in the harsh environment I use them in. I carry the camera in a generic cell phone holder that clips to my belt. It is very accessible and easy to get any time I need it. For general construction photos I typically shoot in auto mode with the flash turned off (to prevent "snow storms" from the flash reflecting off the dust in the air). Pros: Great photo quality. Not quite a DSLR, but very respectable images. It is much better than the Olympus and Panasonics I have owned and about the same as the Canon. The wide angle lens works well in small spaces. This was a big selling point for me. The low light performance is great. In auto ISO mode, the camera will go up to 1600 ISO and you have to zoom way in on the photo before it looks grainy. Combine that with respectable image stabilization and it has the best low light performance of any point and shoot camera I have owned. The only item I like about the touch screen control is that you can compose your shot, touch the part of the screen you want to focus on; then take the picture. I don't use the feature often but when you need it; it takes the frustration away from trying to get the auto focus to do what you want. The battery life is excellent. It is tough. I have dropped this camera several times and it still works fine. About 2 weeks ago, it took a 35' fall onto hard packed dirt. I almost went straight to my computer to start researching my next camera purchase. Imagine my disappointment when I turned it on and it worked just fine. Of all the lousy luck... Cons: My biggest issue with this camera is the touch screen. Except for the touch focusing I mentioned above, it is a cumbersome and inefficient way to control the camera. I have had the touch screen completely and randomly "freeze up" on me and just stop working several times (even before the 35' fall). Most of my cameras have had control pad similar to game controller. They are easy, quick, efficient, and intuitive. The touch screen on the S6100 is not very hard to figure out but it takes more time and steps to do simple things like turn the flash on and off and set exposure compensation. I have already decided that my next camera will not be an S6100 simply because of the touch screen. I would buy one if they came out with a version that had the standard type of controls. You have to choose between a 16 megapixel and an 8 megapixel resolution. It would be nice to have a choice in the 10-12mp range. Startup from "off" is a little slow. The camera goes into "sleep mode" to save battery life. That is typical of most cameras but this one really takes a long time to "wake up". It can be very frustrating especially when you intentionally leave it on to wait for just the right moment. It has caused me to miss quite a few shots. The "Scene" button is one of the few physical buttons. The problem is that once the menu opens; the options are not labeled (symbol only). So if you don't know what the symbol stands for, you have to touch it, touching it selects it and exits the menu. To get back and change it; you have to hit the "Scene button, select the scene menu, and try your luck at the next icon. The result is that I usually just shoot in auto and miss out on some good features. As I said above, the controls are not hard, just not as easy as other cameras I have owned. I am not sure why but when I use the USB cable to transfer photos to my computer; Windows cannot erase the photos from the camera. It works fine when I use the computers built in card reader. This may be an issue with my computer though. However, I did not have the problem with previous cameras. Conclusion: I would not discourage a person from getting this camera nor would I recommend it anyone. The basic functions of the camera and the quality are very good for the price range. Wide angle - 7X zoom is very good for most situations. Had the controls been done a little better, I would love this camera.

Terrible charging

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

My mother got this camera for me and my cousin for Christmas. The first month I loved this product, I thought the touch screen and the drawing features were awesome. One morning after plugging it in overnight to charge, it did not turn on. I would try to plug it in to different outlets and the charge light would turn on but not the camera. I tried to plug it in to my laptop then the on/off button and charge light turned on but not the camera. I am still trying to fix it but so far no luck. I am very disapointed with this product.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I love taking outdoor pics with this camera. It's great for the price and I love the size of it, i can just put it in purse and voila. The only down side to this camera is the fact that when you zoom in, it will blur. That's a bummer, but other than that this is a great camera. If you know what you have and know how to work with it, you should have no problem.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

good thing about s4100, its touch screen, fast and can take high quality picture / movie.but sorry to say as time goes on i had this almost 2 years give or take, it shows its downside, it does not charge anymore, i did not use it often, never mis-use.like drop it or some otherway way to make it malfunction..it was a gift to me from my parents so i took great care for it..i googled and in the end landed back here nikon website and on my frequent shall i say "surfing" i noticed that its not just me that suffer the same fate about s4100 not charging, tried taking the memory off, it always blink a minute and nothing..also tried charging it with my computer, same result...sorry for the long explanation, my only advice is never leave this device uncharge for far too long,if it may in day, discharge (for a day or two, your call) it by leaving it on and turn its power saving feature "off" then charge it again..i repeat..please don't leave it for far too long uncharge..or suffer the same fate..

Junk! Failed after a handful of pictures

By

from Los Angeles, CA, USA

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I had this camera since August last year, it was for my daughter, but she has barely used it. And maybe I should have tested it when I got it before I gave it to her... The camera failed after about 30-40 pictures! The lens comes out, an error message pops up to inform me that there is a "Lens error", and the lens goes back in. Unusable!

disappointed

By

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

This camera worked great for about a year. After that it no longer focused well and 80% of my pictures were blurry. I have never had a camera stop working. I have always bought new cameras in order to upgrade what the camera was able to do. this is by far the most disappointing camera I have ever owned and it is unlikely I will buy a Nikon in the future because of the poor quality of this camera.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Although taken many pictures have come out wonderfully, this camera has a very short battery life. Also, you cannot use it while it is charging, which sometimes is necessary. And the amount of time you have to record videos is very short, 12 minutes

I liked it, for the most part

By

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I got this camera about a year and a half ago. I loved all of the features it had, being able to adjust the white balance, the amount of color in the photo, the plum color, and most of all, the touch screen!! But I should also say that not all of the pictures came out great . Roughly 80% came out nice the first time. There was also a pretty long lag in-between taking photos. Not to mention any time my mom (who has used digital cameras before) tried to use it, she could never get a good picture. I would have been happy using this camera, but while working on a project, my friend knocked it off of a tripod and my camera landed on its lens. After talking to workers at my local tech store, they told me that it would cost just as much, if not more to fix the lens. They then said that they had seen things like this happen before, and that they would never buy a Nikon. So even though this camera has some awesome features, it doesn't take very good pictures and is known to have a faulty lens.

Decent for the price.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S6100 Silver 16.0 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I have owned this camera for about 6 months now. Daytime and outdoor pictures are great. It takes a dump when you use it indoors in relatively low lighting. Front shutter has a protective cover that suppose to be covering the lense while the camera is not being used, it worked for about 1 week and then it gets stuck doesn't cover properly sometime not at all. Battery is decent and options are good for a Point & Shoot.
