Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera, Model COOLPIXS9100BLK

Features:

Advanced, Powerful, yet can go anywhere
The new Nikon COOLPIX S9100 is loaded with innovative Nikon technology, like a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor that assures superb image quality in low-light conditions. Optimized with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED C2 processing engine, you’ll capture natural looking pictures with exceptional detail. You’ll also love composing images on the large three-inch Clear Color Display. This dazzling 921,000-dot, ultra-high resolution display that makes viewing photos and HD movies instantly gratifying.

Whether you’re people watching in Paris or waiting for just the right light to hit the Grand Canal in Venice, the COOLPIX S9100’s High-Speed Shooting feature captures five photos in approximately one second at full resolution. And Subject Tracking keeps the camera automatically focused on your moving subject. At 1.4 inches thin and 7.6 ounces in weight, the portable COOLPIX S9100 is the perfect travel companion, no matter where in the world you take it.

Create a scene and get the most out of every shot.
The world is brimming with creative shooting opportunities, and the COOLPIX S9100 has the advanced features to match. Choose one of 19 Scene Modes to assure optimized camera settings for specific scenes. Or, with Scene Auto Selector, the camera automatically selects the most appropriate mode from among seven choices for you. Plus, Nikon’s amazing Easy Panorama mode allows you to pan the camera in any direction as it automatically detects, combines and assembles your shots into one seamless panoramic image.

With Night Landscape mode, capture high quality images at night. It shoots a series of consecutive shots and composes them into a single, brilliant image. Night Portrait mode takes outdoor portraits against bright backgrounds and combines multiple shots to capture the essence of night scenes. And, the COOLPIX S9100’s Backlighting HDR Mode automatically provides optimum exposures when you’re shooting backlit subjects.

In-camera special effects that don’t require post-shot processing.
You don’t want to be hassled with post-shot processing, which is why Nikon equipped the COOLPIX S9100 with in-camera special effects. These advanced features help you take shots you’ve never considered before! You can re-capture yesteryear with the Nostalgic Sepia effect, or try some intricate black and white shooting with the High-Contrast Monochrome feature. This versatile camera also lets you highlight bright areas of a photo with the High Key effect, or highlight dark areas with the Low Key mode. A Selective Color feature boosts the vibrancy of specific aspects of a photo or movie, while Soft Effect subdues harsh elements for a gentler, silkier look. The COOLPIX S9100 even has a Creative Slider to adjust the brightness, intensity and hue of an image.

Wide angle, high power 18x compact Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens
Producing precision camera optics is at the heart of Nikon’s proud photographic heritage. The COOLPIX S9100 is no exception. Its high quality 18x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens offers impressive telephoto coverage (25-450mm) with outstanding color capture and razor-sharp results. This is the only lens you’ll ever need for exacting portrait studies, scenic panoramas, and challenging compositions. Plus, we realize that shooting from the roof of an SUV, a gondola overlooking the Swiss Alps, or a whale-watching boat in Iceland can get bumpy. That’s why we’ve included a five-way, Hybrid VR Image Stabilization system with the COOLPIX S9100. It uses sensor shift in combination with electronic stabilization features to minimize the effects of camera shake, so you can say goodbye to unwanted streaky or blurred images.

Bring back Full HD (1080p) movies of your treks around the world.
Sharing your travel adventures—or posting them on the Internet for friends and relatives—is even more exciting with Full HD (1080p) movies. While the COOLPIX S9100 can capture hundreds of memorable still images for you to easily print and save, its moviemaking features bring a safari, ski trip, cruise, or balloon ride to life. One touch of the movie recording button and you’ll be shooting 1080p HD movies—complete with stereo sound. Plus, optical zoom and auto focus functions will bring you close to the action. You can even shoot still images while recording movies, or experiment with special effects like fast or slow motion. When the time comes to share your movies, simply use the in-camera playback feature or the convenient HDMI-CEC output for quick hookup to an HDTV or computer.

Convenient features
When traveling on an exotic adventure, you can’t afford missed photo opportunities. You’ll find Nikon’s Motion Detection feature to be important because it identifies moving objects and automatically adjusts shutter speed and ISO to assure crisp, blur free images. When conditions conspire against you, Nikon’s Best Shot Selector automatically takes up to 10 shots and saves the sharpest image. ISO speeds up to 3200 will help you capture great shots in low-light. Blinking eyes and red-eye can ruin portraits. That’s why the COOLPIX S9100 includes Blink Warning. It also offers in-camera Red-Eye Fix that automatically corrects red-eye as you shoot and Skin Softening that smoothes skin tones. The COOLPIX S9100 also has Macro Shooting for shooting as close as 1.6 inches. And, when you’re in remote regions, you’ll appreciate the camera’s 270-shot rechargeable Li-ion battery. .

First thing to know: I received this camera from my wife for my birthday. She went to the store to purchase a full sized digital camera for my many photo "needs". I had planted hundreds of subliminal messages directing her to get me something like a Nikon D7000 with Nikkor lenses. The salesman helping her, after effective inquiries, convinced her I'd use the S9100 more. He was right. I'll bet the store's owner would not agree, but I do. So, after 6 weeks of very heavy use, here's what I think about the CoolPix S9100: The versatility and convenient carry size of the Coolpix S9100 combine with excellent quality to provide surprising value. It is easy to use, requiring for me just a few weeks of daily practice. The user manual is an essential element in this process. My opinion; camera company product development teams should ensure their collateral materials (especially user manuals) are as robust and user friendly as the primary product. Video quality is good. Sound quality is adequate for all my needs. I am particularly pleased the zoom features can be operated while shooting videos. Panorama features are excellent. The "assist" setting makes shooting panorama absolutely simple - even without a tripod. I'm eager to get a print made and see the results of this excellent feature. The HDR feature (high dynamic range) is terrific. The manual says very little about it or the way it works. It should. It is a good feature. I tried to determine, before first use, if this camera had automatic exposure bracketing. The reason for that inquiry was simply to ensure I could use the HDR software on my computer to create better photos. (one needs about 6 shots at various exposures) Imagine my surprise when I discovered the S9100 used software inside itself to make HDR photo for me. Now, that's something folks should know. The flash location and functions are good. Backlighting features are very good. "Scene" settings are good. It takes more than 6 weeks to really test them all thoroughly so for now I can only say, "my limited use seems to indicate these factory settings are good". Macro hasn't been as easy for me to use because the camera is very small and more difficult to hold than a larger bodied camera. I think it would be wise, if the user can manage it, to use a tripod with Macro. The size of the camera is one of its features. It is also one of its shortcomings. I have large hands. I found the addition of a pocket sized tripod gave me something to hold and helped me produce better shots. My mini tripod is about 4 inches long with legs like a "snake light". I leave it on the camera all the time. The view screen is terrific. However, like all screens, outdoor viewing can be tough and glare can be a real problem. I am going to test the anti - glare screen protectors sold for cell phones and PDA's. That may help. Recharging is a snap using the USB / 120v adapter with long wire. I prefer to recharge small batteries by removing them from the camera and placing them in a dedicated charging dock. That allows me to put the camera body back in its case (for safety) while the battery is charging, but I've adjusted to the S9100 system and have no complaints. I just have to be more careful. Overall, after 6 weeks of use, the salesman was right, my wife bought a great product, and I'm pleased with the pictures I'm creating. Compact digital cameras tend to be point and shoot devices for an audience that frankly doesn't require much else. But Nikon did right by their brand with the S9100. It's a whale of nice little camera. Of course, I doubt the D7000 would have disappointed me - but don't tell my wife.

Out of the box, the camera has a nice feel. The controls are conveniently located and easy to use. A little time reading the online manual, (can be downloaded in PDF format) help get the most out of what this camera can do. It is on the large side for a point and shoot, but still fits in a pocket. The 18x zoom is nice to get the up close shots of wildlife I like to shoot. Overall, the images this camera produces are good and what I expected. What I didn't expect was the poor manufacturing quality. After three days of owning this camera, I downloaded the first images. I noticed a spot on the right side of images, (bird in tree image below) that had a solid background. After one and a half months, the focus started to not work properly. The camera would freeze and the battery would need to be removed to get things going again. At the end of two months the lens would not retract all the way and the lens error would show. After about 20 seconds the lens would retract and the camera would shut off. When I turned the camera back on the lens would move back an forth, make an awful clicking sound, and then the lens error would appear again. At that point the camera would not work at all and was sent in for service to fix the spot and lens error. [Beware! If you buy this camera and need to return it for repair, be prepared to wait over a month to have it returned. Mine is 5 weeks out and counting.] Conclusion: This camera takes good pictures when it works, however the mechanical quality leaves much to be desired and service repair is very slow. Based on the manufacturing quality and the repair time, I would not buy this product again.

Lenses do not close when you turn off the camera

By

from NY, NY

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I owned many cameras before. Nikon S9100 was the best by far in its category. I purchased it in February 2012 and it broke around or after September 19th. It didn't even last a year. First lenses, when closing started making weird sound and then didn't close at all. There is not a chance that something could get into them. As well this item never took a hit or was dropped. I think I bought a defective camera. Thinking of replacing it with similar item from Sony.

Battery goes dead too fast after displayed on monitor

By

from Delancey, N.Y.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I always had canon camera's but figured the nikon name would be a good try. I actually started using my old canon again, its more reliable and user friendly. The battery on the nikon goes quickly if you take a video, what's up with that? And the camera wasn't cheap either. I guess I'll stick with what works for me and thats Canon. Sorry

Good photos, poor video, poor quality

By

from Albuquerque, NM, USA

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I love taking nature and cityscape photos, and a compact point and shoot with a super zoom seemed like a good addition to my IPhone 4S and Canon SX40HS that I often use. The Nikon S9100 takes generally good daytime photos. It's zoom is capable of taking good bird photos as long as the bird isn't too far away...across a small pond is about the limit. On a monopod, the anti shake auto focus works well even at full zoom (for photos anyway). It takes clear shots both far away and close up. It doesn't do well in low light situations. However, it's video quality is terrible...it does a very poor job of auto focusing when changing zoom lengths, and often "stutters" or freezes even when shooting video at a constant zoom. And now, after 7 months of ownership, the camera is nonfunctional; the lenses won't fully extend and display won't come on. I think anyone who wants this type of camera wants to be able to take videos, so on that basis alone I would advise looking elsewhere...you won't like this camera. For those just taking photos, the camera performs well in daylight. If the video worked better I would consider getting the camera fixed, but it doesn't...what a waste of money this camera was.

Turn off Auto Mode

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I understand the frustration with blurry pictures with this camera. When set to Auto Mode, I have the same experience. I've been able to overcome this by: 1. Take it off "Auto Mode." 2. Turn off "Digital Zoom." 3. Turn the dial to "SCENE" (not Scene (Auto)). 4. Press the Menu Button and select the type of scene you're shooting. It does a remarkable job when you tell it what you're shooting. If you want a true point and shoot, this probably isn't the camera for you. If you're willing to take the time to let it know what you want, I think you'll be pleased. I purchased this camera for backpacking and have been happy with the results. If it were possible to give multiple ratings, I would give: 1 star - Camera in Auto Mode 5 star - Camera in SCENE mode 0 star - Nikon for making no effort to clear this up with firmware update.

I read all the great reviews but not for me..

By

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I have only used Canon and love canon however I decided to go with Nikkon this time becuase this camera got great reviews and it was a great deal plus the store manager recommended it. There are a lot of features I do like about it such as the zoom. Canon does not have a camera in this size with this zoom. So big plus on this camera. I also like that I was able to figure out the special effects quite easily. I never quite got it with canon had to go through many menus. However, sometimes if I don't have the flash up the picture comes out blurry some pictures are not taken as I point and shoot it seems like it's a delayed picture that ends up coming out blurry and if I want to shoot a lot of images back to back I get blurry images as well I don't know if it's to slow. I'm not technologically savvy so maybe there's something I'm missing or have not adjusted but I'm not all that thrilled about that. I've missed many great moments because of this camera and waiting for it to be ready to take the shot.

Out of FOCUS

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Black 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Purchased the s9100 camera in Dec. 2011 and I'm generally disappointed and frustrated with performance. Some photos are good but frequently, perhaps even most of the time, the auto-focus does not work properly and misses the crisp focus that the optics are capable of achieving. The result is way way too many out of focus images. The improper focus is even clearly apparent on the LCD screen. Nikon should fix this problem ----- obviously many unhappy users.
