I got this as a Christmas gift as I was in need of a better digital camera. I needed an SLR for my photographic art that I do. So, I liked this and some others in the EOS series, and I ended up getting this particular one as a gift. I have an old analogue Rebel 2000. This works just like it-except this is a digital SLR camera whereas my older one isn't. So it was easy to figure out how to use many basic features to get started. It's nearly identical in function to the older Canon cameras. Having said that, the lenses I had from years ago work seamlessly with the T3. I was doing a lot of research or trying to on comparing different models within the series and one mid range camera too by Canon. So, here are some things I learned in the process of looking and part of why I say bang for the buck, you can't go wrong with this camera. The image quality is amazing. I did some test shots in various light conditions-with and without the built in flash. The detail is impecable. The image quality is the same on this as are the other higher end Canon cameras. The image might be smaller by a few inches in either direction in comparison. So don't bawk at 12MP on this camera. Without any resizing, you can print at 150dpi an image of about 30" x 20". If you view it on your monitor, it's more like a little under 60" x 40". It's incredibly pristine at that. The video capabilites are HD, but it's 720p vs. 1080p on some higher end models by Canon. You will get better quality of video on this in poor light than some camcorders will in good light. With this, you have better quality optics than a camcorder. I did try some low light shooting with a class 6 card, and it did suffice. If you get a higher video resolution, you'll need a class 10 card. However, for 720p, you can get away with a class 6 card. The stock lens on this has a lower window so to speak compared to my old film Rebel. I like that because it will allow you to have a wider angle. I don't think this one has the calcium flouride coating like the ones shown, but I haven't found that to be problematic yet. It is a good lens and easy to use. However, if you electroniclly focus this lens while video recording, you'll hear the motor. If you set it and leave it, it's not a problem. You can get a quieter lens if you want. The higher end Canon's do have a flip screen for the LCD monitor built in. The higher the model, the more resolute the screen is. You won't complain with this T3 on quality of the monitor-believe me. You can get a higher resolution screen on a more expensive Canon. However, if you don't need that, you'll start finding this T3 more appealing on that. This particular camera is slower than others that are higher end models with Canon in that you won't be able to shoot as many frames per second continuously compared to others. If you do model shoots for magazines or someting and need higher continous action, then you might want to consider one of the next models up. Otherwise, this will do pretty much what the others like it will do. This has a somewhat trademark contrast of sorts indicative of Canon-which I like. From an artistic standpoint, I like that. It's not quite as sterile as some other competitors might be in that regard. If you've used this line of camera's before, or if you've seen some of the images, you'll see what I mean over time. Sometimes you can see a near texture on the LCD when you take a shot-almost. The white balance on this thing is about perfect. You don't have to do any fancy or advanced adjustments to get that. On most images, when when I've gone to adjust that with my editing software, there are subtle differences in comparison to the white balance before and after adjusting. I've tried it with a few test shots, and an image from an older XSi that someone else shot. This thing is quite accurate. If you're use to a point and shoot camera, the difference in detail will amaze you. You won't have that subtle ghost effect over everything with this one-there's reasons for that. However, know that you won't have that effect on this camera or any subtle white haze. You don't need any special filters to get that quality but they wouldn't hurt either. I'll say that. You have a much more controled range with this versus a point and shoot of any brand or quality. You can also upgrade the lenses to whatever and swap those out. If you're new to this line up or product, and you see it's more expensive in comparison to a lot of other point and shoot cameras, keep this in mind. This is a professional quality camera. It has the same image processor as some pricer versions like it. You can use this like a point and shoot, but you have options on this that a traditional consumer camera won't give you. I chose and considered this one because of a few reasons. It made more sense to me to get something compatible with my old lenses than switching ot a competitor and having to replace lenses that are perfectly good. If you buy a competing product with like specs, it will cost more and anyone will tell you it's not going to be quite as user friendly in comparison. For my particular needs, I am starting as a digital artist. I do certain special effects shots and use those and other still lifes as the basis for works of my art. I needed a better camera than what I had. It opens up a lot of other possibilities for sure. Money is tight-and this ended up being a very welcome Christmas gift. Had I not gotten this as a gift, I probably would have picked this one out anyways as for what I use it for, it does as good of a job as some other higher priced models. 1080p video would be nice and some other things, but for the video I plan on shooting, it will suffice. I almost have to shrink the image a bit for certain effects to take as the resolution is almost too much for what I do, and certain effects to come out like I want them to. I learned that from some experimenting quite fast. So given that, it's a no brainer. I didn't know this at the time, but some retailers sells a lovely starter bundle for a good price. I just happened to get the body/lens kit with a 4GB class 6 card, and a really nice Canon bag that goes with it. The grab bag that came in that bundle from Canon is one of the better bags I've seen. You can fit 2 camera bodies in it and 3 or so lenses. Then you have side pockets for things like batteries, cards, filters, caps, etc. It's a functional bag, and it's padded well. So far, I could not be happier with this camera. I know I just got it, but I've tinkered with it. It might be a little noisy when you have some really low light at night, inside, and an ISO 3200 speed. When I say low light, I mean very low ambient light. However, some things come out nice anyways without noise. It depends on the subject and how close or far away from your subject you are. If you have more "normal" light conditions-like a single overhead light bulb in the will have no noise at all. I am still in learning mode, and I have yet to take this outside to use it and experiment, but so far inside, with dim lighting conditions, I am really impressed as to the quality of imagery this thing produces. There is no way I could get that same quality with what I was using before-a significantly cheaper digital camera. I took some personal pictures with my other cheapy digital, and I retook them with this T3. It's night and day in the quality. If you want a good camera, or an entry level professional camera, you won't be dissappointed with this one at all. There might be a learning curve for some or if you're trying to expand your capabilities artistically like I am now, but you'll start to see really quick how that all works.

Just purchased the T3 bundle from a department store (2 lenses 18-55mm and 70-300mm, starter lenses). The camera is very powerful and has lots of features. The one thing that surprises me is the lack of a rubber textured grip. I have a Canon T50 (yes, its old and it works fine) and that camera has a GREAT rubber grip. Why did Canon exclude a rubber textured grip on the T3? I cannot think of a single reason to exclude a rubber textured grip.

Perfect beginners DSLR

from Santa Clarita, CA, United States

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

I picked the T3 up, bundled with an 18-55 IS and a 75-300 several years ago to replace my aging EOS 350D. It's the camera that assisted me in becoming a professional photographer! It has all the manual settings you could ask for as a beginner, and takes crisp shots, especially for the price range. Nowadays I work with several 1Ds, 7Ds, and massive EF lenses while I shoot motorsports events, but the plucky little T3 still hangs with the big boys, especially if the user is good at post-processing. I always have it as a back up camera in case the weather gets nasty or the other, bigger cameras act up. Any entry level Rebel will be perfect for the beginner/intermediate photographer, and can be commercially successful if you put the work in. I highly recommend them if you're enthusiastic about photography and DSLRs but don't know where to start. Everything about the Rebels are easy to learn.

Great for beginners; terrible for Professional use

from Detroit, MI, United States

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

When it comes to learning, it can be a great tool. It is super cheap and produces decent images. If you are willing to learn and grow as a photographer, as well as get the 50mm 1.8, you can produce decent results. I love a lot of the pictures I have taken, but I definitely need a new camera. I have had it for over a year, and have taken around 200,000 shots. I like using it at 18mm on the kit or with my 50mm, but the kit is very unsharp at anything longer. The autofocus is absolutely terrible. I constantly find myself having issues because there are only 9 points, and even when there is plenty of light, it will search and give me the error because it can't focus. When I pair it with a 70-200L F/4, it does produce very sharp results for portraits, but that's only when there is a lot of light. For sports or wildlife, if you can't manually focus, forget about it. It is absolutely horrid even in AI Servo and while back-button-focusing. If you are getting this to move away from your point-and-shoot, then I say it can be a great learning tool, but I now need to invest in something better like a 7D mark II to do professional work.

Great beginner purchase

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

Ordered this camera around a year and a half ago as my first SLR and am now just moving on to the Canon 70D. Great starting camera! Simple enough to use but also takes great photos in the process. Not the fastest to focus or sharpest when it comes to action but a great camera for landscape and portraits!

Difficult to use

from Stuart, Fl.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

I've had a Rebel T3i for about a year. It will not take a picture that is any further then 30-49 feet. Beyond that, the image is tiny and not magnified. I have tried every trick I know. Changing lenses is useless. The 5x & 10x enhances the image only on the display screen. The actual picture is terrible and not at all enlarged. Every single time I use it, I'm disappointed.

Great Camera

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

Have owned this camera for 4 years now. It has proven to be a versatile and very usable camera. Fast focusing and a fairly accurate metering system. It impressed me from day one. Light weght and comfortable to hold. I own other canons to include the 6D and 70D, but I still find myself gra bing this one for a days shooting simply because I am so used to it. It has never let me down.

The Little Camera That Can

from Detroit, MI

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

While I'm a newcomer to the world of DSLR photography, I can't help but praise the capabilities of this amazing camera. it many of the features featured in more upscale cameras, but it's user friendly controls make learning its operation a snap. That said, you can take some amazing shots with the T3. I know because I have!

Best Entry Level Camera

from Canoga Park, CA

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

The Canon T3i for me is the best camera for DSLR beginners. The articulated screen is so convenient especially in hard angled views. the kit lens that comes with it will be a good practice lens. I am using this camera for low light shooting and astrophotography and am really happy with the results. I'm sure this camera would last long when properly cared and maintained.

Worst camera purchase ever

from Washington, D.C.

Comments about Canon EOS Rebel T3i Digital SLR Camera With 18-55mm IS II Kit:

I have had the camera for two years, had to return it twice for defects under warranty, the first time one month after purchasing it because a glitch in the software made it impossible to eject the SD card. Now, I have to send the lens in, (third service request), because a screw has gotten loose and rattles inside, messing up the autofocus function, and at times blocking the manual adjustment altogether. In addition, from the beginning, there were multiple times when the focus just goes in and out, for ever, and makes it impossible to actually release the trigger. Needless to say, many great shots were missed because of this inability to simply shoot. I have had to disable automatic focus. But then again, it is easy to forget that I am no longer on automatic focus, and have to manually focus instead. Result: pictures end up being fuzzy. In short, this camera is a huge waste of time and money.
