Product Details

Nikon COOLPIX L120 Red 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera, Model COOLPIXL120RED

Features:

Zoom in on a high powered camera at an easy to handle price.

Great photos and superb HD movies begin with Nikon’s high power 21x wide-angle optical Zoom-NIKKOR glass lens. This powerful zoom lens, with a 25-525mm range equivalent, closes the distance between you and your subjects. Capture your son firing off the game-winning lacrosse shot or your daughter’s first ride on a two wheeler. Whether it’s a panoramic shot of the entire family on a favorite sledding hill, or a photo of your children playing in the backyard, you’ll shoot effortlessly and accurately with the COOLPIX L120.

If you’re new to photography, no worries, this camera has intelligent features to help you out. Five-way VR Image Stabilization uses sensor shift to minimize the effects of camera shake, virtually eliminating blurred images. Trick-or-treating with the kids? The COOLPIX L120 has a high ISO speed up to 6400 to capture fast moving or low-light scenarios.

One-touch HD movie recording puts friends and family in motion.

As photo keeper of family memories, you can rely on the COOLPIX L120 to capture great still images that you can print and save. But a band concert without sound is incomplete and a 60-yard touchdown drive without the fleet-footed runs isn’t as exciting. That’s where the COOLPIX L120’s advanced One-Touch HD Movie recording capabilities come in. With the push of a button you’ll instantly be shooting 720p HD movies in full stereo. While shooting you can activate the camera’s zoom function to capture tight shots and close ups. And when you’re ready to share your movies with family and friends, you can use in-camera playback or the convenient HDMI output for simple hookup to an HDTV or computer.

Shoot snowboarders, Frisbee throwers and T-ball players with a single, versatile camera.

Low-light conditions and fast action can defeat some cameras, but not the COOLPIX L120. With high ISO speeds up to 6400, you can be sure that still images and movies will be ideally captured. With Nikon’s Sport Continuous Shooting mode, this camera takes photos continuously and in quick succession to capture fast moving objects. You’ll get great use of the in-camera editing functions, including D-Lighting for adjusting contrast and fine details often lost when shooting in glaring or intense light. You can pick from five color options: Standard, Vivid, Black & White, Sepia and Cyanotype. And when you want to take close up photos, the COOLPIX L120 will zero in as close as 0.4 inches. Don’t hesitate to click away, because you’ll get about 330 stills from the four AA alkaline batteries that come with the camera.

A camera so smart it knows when your subject smiles, warns you if someone blinks, and gets the red out of grandma’s eyes.

Behind every great photo and HD movie is the COOLPIX L120, a camera brimming with technological advances. Smile Timer detects when a subject smiles and automatically takes the photo. Blink Warning identifies when a subject may have blinked and signals you to retake the shot. Face-Priority AF is an innovative face-identifying technology that detects and focuses up to 12 faces automatically.

Red-eye will no longer ruin family photos. In-camera Red-Eye Fix automatically fixes the problem before it occurs. Blotchy, uneven complexions are also a thing of the past with COOLPIX L120’s Skin Softening, which smoothes skin tones. This versatile camera also has 17 Scene Modes that adjust camera settings to selected scenes, assuring great pictures at school plays, backyard barbecues, or athletic events.

A dazzling three-inch color display brings your stills and HD movies to life.

You’ll enjoy composing images from the COOLPIX L120’s bright three-inch LCD color display, which features a dazzling 921,000-dot screen that showcases still images and HD movies in rich detail and enhanced contrast. And for easy photo composition, improved picture viewing, and instant sharing, the LCD monitor’s wide viewing angle and anti-glare coating lets you capture and view high quality images in virtually any lighting condition, every time. .

I purchased this camera last April for my wife to replace her Coolpix L18. For the price, the performance is actually quite a bit better than expected. This camera does seem to be more negatively affected by dirty lenses (pictures will seem "smudged" or poor in resolution if not cleaned regularly). The features built into this camera are amazing. If you have a steady enough hand (or a decent stand), the zoom is capable of capturing far off objects in great detail. I regularly take pictures of specific craters and formations on the moon. The colors are sharp, and the pixel count makes it possible to photograph far off images and zoom in later without creating the dreaded pixelated affect. The built in portrait options create multiple opportunities to perfect your personal photographic style, and the video capture capabilities are almost on the level of most comparably priced handheld recorders. The panorama assist mode enables you to stitch multiple shots together to create beautiful landscape portraits and scenery compilations. The only cons I have found in the nine months we've had it are the slow reload time after taking a picture (with the flash), the inability to increase zoom to full extent when capturing video (capable of "normal" zoom while filming, but not all the camera is capable of), and the relative difficulty associated with placing the focus on the desired object if it is below a certain size. Focusing on a cat from 50 yards away is simple, but photographing a dragonfly up close (while zoomed in) is nearly impossible. I've done it, but it took seven shots to make one worth keeping. All in all, I'd say this is a great camera for anyone. I've even sold some of the pictures I've taken with it and am currently making a calender. I'd most recommend it to someone with a family, seeking to capture those special moments as they happen, but a steady hand will prevail if you choose to use it to other means.

I bought this camera a few weeks ago and perhaps my review will be a bit premature. Also keep in mind that I am not a professional photographer, or even close. I have owned point-and-shoot Nikons before and I have been disappointed with the quality of photos taken under low light. This is not different with the Nikon-L120, at least when you take photos using the smart auto function. Furthermore, oftentimes with this function selected, the flash will not flash, even though the picture produced reveals that a flash was needed. Therefore, in order to take better pictures at night, one needs to give up on the smart auto mode, select among the “night picture mode and manually set the flash to trigger no matter what. Another thing that bothers me is that almost every landscape or portrait photo I take is “soft. I am not about carrying a tripod everywhere I go, and this camera is heavy enough that a simple light “table tripod will not do it. Photos do end up acceptable when you manually select the photo mode, and even more when the camera be stabilized somehow other than just with your hands. There is no viewfinder so that you do not have the option to have the camera stabilized against your face. The Macro and sports modes do take good pictures though, and the zoom quality is very good as long as nothing moves (the camera or the subject or the wind). Battery life is very good, but one irritating thing is that in order to take the memory card out and in, one needs to open the battery container. Again, I have not used all the functions this camera has to offer yet and I do believe that it will perform better with a semi-professional or professional photographer. If your intention is to take photos on the go and do not have time to fiddle with the manual, and if you do not want to carry a tripod around with you, chose from one of the compact point-and-shoot Nikon has to offer. You will save money and end up with very similar results.

Really Nice Camera!

By

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX L120 Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I've used this camera long enough to write a review for it. It is originally my grandma's camera, and I've used it on and off for almost 2 years. I had the best experience with it this weekend, the longest time period I've been able to use it. I discovered the capabilities this camera has, such as the Panorama Assist feature and the great quality during video mode. If you set it up right and have good natural sunlight, this camera can reach really nice focusing ranges. The trees around here are leaf-less and the branches can blend together, so when the camera focused in on a bird, I was amazed. Did the same in video mode. All those people who were talking about blurry photos probably over zoomed images, didn't have good lighting, or didn't let the camera focus. This camera focuses all on it's own, so sometimes you won't have that amazing picture you hoped for. If you're planning on doing any Bokeh-style images (purposefully blurring out pictures of lights), it can be done, but the camera with be a little weird for about 5-8 pictures afterwards. Anyway, I hope you have as good of an experience as I have. My Additional Customer Service Feedback: This particular camera is an easy to use, but still professional feeling, point and shoot camera. The features and capabilities of this camera are discovered simply by having fun with it, making it worthwhile.

good camera still needs some work

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX L120 Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Ive had this camera since it came out, still have issues with zoom, indoor, kids & movement photos. these photos become blurry and out of focus. when we press the button it takes about 20 sec for the photo to come up on the screen. it's nasty photos. when i take photos outside they are great. wish the software had more options to make dvd's. Self-timer should be more time not 10 or 2 seconds duration or have a cable with a clicker

Great camera, one downside.

By

from Toronto, ON, Canada

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX L120 Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

This is probably the best camera for the money that I've used. The only downside is that I can't update the firmware to 1.1 as I don't have a 32-bit operating system. It is very frustrating as I just dropped the money on an sd card that is supported, but only with firmware version 1.1. I cannot find a 64-bit version of the update, nor anyone that still uses 32-bit here. Great camera, but a pain to update. Currently in the market for a new camera because of this issue.

Excellent camera for the intermediate photograher

By

from Asheville, NC, USA

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX L120 Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Always wanted to upgrade to a Nikon built camera to improve on the quality of my pictures. The shots of the moon in various stages and the my two dogs playing on the deck came out excellent. My indoor pictures and the sunrise ones really added to my enjoyment. I tried many of the settings and was pleased with the results.

Very Good Camera

By

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX L120 Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Have had use of L120 for a little more than an year now and overall I give a thumbs up in almost aspects. One functional problem I have encountered and cannot overcome (due to lack of knowledge) is that when in deep telephoto mode the automatic focus system continually hunts for a point to focus on for subjects at a distance of 100ft or more. And there is one design flaw in the placement of exterior buttons on the camera body. The photo review button is exactly where you put your thumb when you pickup the camera, hence it turns the camera on in review mode. This a nuisance. To navigate through the multiple setup menus you need to learn which mode to be in to bring up the menu you want -- not intuitive.

Full of Problems

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX L120 Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

After a few weeks, these problems developed: 1. On starting, I get a message to turn off the camera and remove the lens cap- even tho the cap was not on. The lens cycles in and out and then turns off. 2. On telephoto, the quality of the pics is bad- blurry. The pics are reasonably ok if you use the standard distance and no flash. The flash is too bright almost ALL the time. I took the camera on vacation to Maine and my son's camera, some cheap point and shoot job, made much better pictures than my Nikon. I'm sending it in to Nikon to get fixed. I'm not surprised they don't make this one any more. I'd not recommend this camera to anyone and considering the cost, I would reasonably have expected a much better product.
