Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder, Model HDRTD10

The Sony® HDR-TD10 Handycam® camcorder utilizes two Full HD sensors for capturing true 1920x1080 3D video delivering an immersive 3D experience, as well as Full HD 2D video. View 3D and 2D videos directly on its generous 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD™ display—no special glasses required. Watch all 3D video in 2D as well.

Features:

  • Double Full HD 3D Consumer camcorder
The Sony® HDR-TD10 utilizes two Full HD sensors to capture true 1920x1080 3D video. Most 3D cameras achieve the 3D affect by splitting a 1920x1080 signal in to two 960x540 channels in order to squeeze them onto one sensor, thereby limiting resolution on the final output. Because the Sony HDR-TD10 utilizes two HD sensors, it provides a full 1920x1080 lines of resolution on both channels, giving you a richer and more immersive 3D experience
  • 3D Ready 3.5” Xtra Fine LCD™ display (1229K) w/TruBlack™ technology
The LCD is also 3D ready, enabling you to view your 3D content directly on the camera’s LCD without the need for 3D glasses. TruBlack™ technology brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to the camcorder’s 3.5” Xtra Fine LCD™ display, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions by reducing glare
  • 1920x1080 Full HD 60p/24p recording w/7MP still image capture
Capturing 1920 x 1080 high definition resolution lets you record your memories in exceptional Full High Definition quality. Capable of 60p recording6 and playback via HDMI™ and compatible HDTV providing stunning clarity and incredibly detailed playback of your memories. If you’re looking for a film-like quality look to your video, 24p recording is available for you
  • 64GB embedded Flash Memory
The built-in 64GB embedded Flash memory can record and store up to 25 hours of 2D high definition video footage (HD LP mode), or up to 5 hours of High definition 3D video
  • Back-illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS sensor for superb low-light video
Experience stunning low-light sensitivity with improved image clarity and drastically reduced grain with Sony’s back-illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS sensor. Designed for compact cameras and camcorders, the "Exmor R" sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, maximizing the light gathering area per pixel so you can shoot with better results in lower lighting conditions
  • Dual Wide Angle G Lenses to capture everything you want
Experience the pinnacle of Sony® lens technology with the professional-quality G Lens. Engineered for superior optical performance, Sony G lenses deliver brilliant, accurate color reproduction and sharp, amazingly detailed images. In addition, the 29.8mm(2D) and 34.4mm(3D) focal length in Video Mode offers a broader perspective for enhanced wide angle shooting
  • Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization w/ Active Mode
Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode compensates for greater degrees of camera shake to deliver stunningly smooth video, whether you’re shooting in 3D or 2D
  • 10x Optical Zoom in 3D mode
Zoom in on your subjects even in 3D mode with 10x optical zoom
  • 17x Extended Zoom to get even closer to the action
Extended Zoom works in conjunction with 12x optical zoom6 to get even closer to the action while maintaining HD image quality
  • Tracking Focus follows selected subjects
Tracking Focus works as an extension of Face Detection to allow you to select an object with a touch of the LCD and have the focus follow the selected object
  • Easily switch between 2D/3D with dedicated switch
A dedicated switch allows for easy switching from recording 2D to 3D, whether you’re recording or playing back video. In 3D mode, only 3D content will be displayed for playback, however when in 2D mode, all content will be displayed and played back in 2D. This allows you to record all your video in 3D and choose later whether or not you want to playback in 2D or 3D
  • Manual Control (Iris/Shutter/Exposure/White Balance)
Get the most out of your camcorder with enhanced manual controls. The assignable dial allows for control of focus, exposure, white balance, iris, and shutter speed
  • 5.1ch Surround mic for vivid and dynamic surround sound
Dolby® Digital 5.1 channel recording captures active sounds coming from all directions, so you can experience your home movies the way you experienced them while recording
  • Wind noise reduction for clear voice recording
Wind Reduction reduces noise and interference that is produced when wind passes over the microphone, giving you a clearer and more enjoyable sound experience
  • Expanded recording/monitoring with mic/headphone jack
Features dedicated mic and headphone inputs for expanded audio recording options and convenient monitoring of audio with headphones (external microphones and headphones sold separately)
  • Active Interface Shoe to attach intelligent accessories

  • Clear Phase stereo speakers for true and dynamic sound
Bring your video alive with Clear Phase stereo speakers with linear phase correction. Drawing on Sony’s high-end audio expertise, renown S-Master™ digital amplifier technology is utilized to produce more true-to-life sound

Your camcorder can also access videos stored on the external hard drive for playback on your HDTV, allowing you to utilize the camcorder’s handy playback features

One of the first things I check for in any digital camera (regardless of whether its 3D or 2D) is low light picture capture performance. I was impressed with what the TD10 delivers in both normal and low light conditions, in comparison to both Sony and non-Sony camcorders. My previous (non-Sony) camera's indoor and evening video recordings were characteristically grainy and useless indicating inferior or non-existent processing for low-light conditions which resulted in noticeable picture noise. The TD10, on the other hand, does a great job in denoising the low-light video to the point that the noise is nearly non-visible. 3D videos on the TD10 clearly show depth and, as I noticed, there is some skill involved in capturing 3D videos for maximum depth effect - which I am still quickly getting better at. Sceneries containing objects at different distances feel very immersive. I also tried shooting in-flight videos, which of course don't show much depth unless you really zoom in to the features you are recording, such as clouds, mountains or buildings. Playback on 3D TV was vivid and often stunning. The 3D video playback from the camera's glasses-free viewfinder is a great bonus. And, I found the built-in 64 gigabyte SSD drive quite adequate for most multi-day excursions as it delivers several hours of recording in 3D 1080i mode. Increasing video quality to 1080p will obviously reduce recording time by a bit, but really, I found the 1080i video quality setting quite acceptable. NOW FOR THE NOT SO GOOD: (1) The only way to play back 3D videos right now appears to be from the TD10 camera itself! Sure you can copy the videos to your PC hard drive, but my SONY Playstation 3 with 3D Blue Ray firmware upgrade, is incapable of playing back these files in 3D from a hard drive or a video stream through my laptop. Currently, the files simply get played back in 2D by the PS3. I don't really consider 3D blu-ray as an option as the storage is too limited compared to a hard drive. The PS3 can play back "side-by-side" videos, but this is not the format in which the MTS video files on the TD10 are recorded. So here it is, Sony, how about giving users some support in playing back 3D MTS files via the PS3 from a laptop/PC, Another firmware upgrade to support this on the PS3 would be greatly appreciated, or at least giving us the ability to convert to SBS format for PS3 playback, and maybe even the capability to EDIT the videos? (2) The TD10 does not allow one to take still photos AT ALL if the 2D-3D switch is set to 3D. The user is required to switch to 2D, take the picture, and then switch back to 3D. Hmm. This sounds like it can be easily resolved with a firmware upgrade as it is not user friendly in its current form - Case in point: One often wants to take a picture in the middle of a 3D video recording session. By the time you've switched to 2D to take that picture you often miss the moment. Furthermore, the user can sometimes forget to flip the switch back to 3D and end up inadvertently recording 2D videos! Overall: Impressed.

I was very excited to have this unit. It looks great, feels very good in your hands. However, due to the fact that I am only able to watch video taken from this camera, from this camera it is difficult to see value. I thought I would be able to take the video from this unit and burn it to either blueray or dvd. Not the case. You can ONLY plug this into your tv and watch that way, at least if you want to watch it in 3D. Sure, you can take the output file and play it back in 2D, but if I wanted to do that I would have saved a thousand dollars and bought a 2d player. SO FAR, this is the only unit on market that does this. Data is saved in MVC format (bit-map and depth-map) to save memory space, just like 3D blu-ray, and output pixels in frame-packing format of the HDMI 1.4a, again, not directly editable by any editor. They are not planning to output compressed streams out of that in 3D at all, just in 2D, where they'll output AVCHD like in other 2D camcorders. WHY SONY ? WHY ?

Great 3D

By Srinivasan

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

I bought this camera in Dec 2011. Camera's performance is superb. However, with the supplied PMB we could burn 3D video in blue ray disc and able to watch in 3D player. However, we could not watch in 3D display laptop. Then I downloaded Play Memories Home from Sony. This software allows user to watch 3D movie in laptop. However, the play back function in this software is good enough to stop, pause, FF, etc, in 3D mode watch. Sony should look into this. Overall, I greatly satisfied with this Sony 3D Video camera.

Big problem

By SZaf

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

I bought this vidcam when it came out. Generally, I am a fan of Sony's products. Until now (almost a year) there is no support for 3d playback for PS3. Sony promotes 3D and call itself a leader but even its own systems can't support each other: if you want to play 3d clip you took on the TD10 on a PS3 - forget about it. sharing clips with someone who doesn't have the vidcam - forget about it. The only way to share clips of your kids with your parents is buying them the expensive TD10 and an external harddrive. BIG BIG disappointment! Sony - isn't it about time to have your PS3 support your own vidcam 3D format?

Sony TD10- NO LONGER A DOUBTER

By jxljr

from Chalmette, Louisiana

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

Took my first 3D video at a family christening Sunday. Came home and uploaded video to Cyberlink Softwear on my computer. Was able to edit and burn copies to standard DVD's in 2D, 3D anaglyph and 3D side by side for play back on my Sony 3D TV. Having problem with my BluRay that it only burns one type Blu Ray, cant wait to see the BluRay quality since the standard DVD in itself was very good, to say the least. I have Sony Vegas 11 softwear as well as Cyberlink Power Director 10, Cyberlink for me IS THE BEST. All my videoclips opened in Cyberlink in 3D, you can even make your own 3D titles and adjust the depth of the wording as you wish. Burn to standard DVD, AVCHD or BluRay in 2D, 3D anagyph, 3D side/side or 3D over/under. Don't let anyone tell you you can't edit and burn to DVD in 3D from the SonyTD-10.

Edit your TD10 videos on vegas, baby

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

I reviewed the td10 about a year ago. I loved it then and still do. I see many reviews claiming that they can't edit and burn 3d video to bluray. This is totally untrue. Sony Vegas pro11 & the less expensive consumer version offers full 3d editing functions. You can even adjust both h and v convergence. You can burn a full hd bluray from the editing time line. You can also export as anaglphic 3d, side x side, and over / under to bd or DVD. The latter formats are ideal for projects intended for broadcast. The only limitation ( unless you purchase some very pricey add'l software) is not being able to do 3d menus on bd. I don't find this to be a problem. If you are producing a professional project, you. Burn your 3d bluray and send it off to a mastering house to make a master. If your a 3d home movie enthusiast you can burn 3d blurays w/o menus That will play on all 3d bd players. If you export in s x s, o / u, or Anaglyph, then you burn bd or DVD with menus with any burning program. I use Sony Vegas pro 11 and have achieved great results. I would compare the 3d quality on bd from Vegas with any studio release. If your serious about shooting 3d and don't want to spend 20k$, the td10 is a great place to start. Just have the right software and a pc with 12 to 24 g of ram and an i series chip. I use a Dell studio series with quad i7 chip and 24 gb of ram and find editing & exporting 3d video to be no more effort than flat HD.

Work in progress

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

I am a amateur SCUBA photographer and wanted to do some underwater video as well so I was considering a video capable SLR. Regrettably this also meant a new UW case with a price in 4 fig. range. Then it hit me... I had a UW case for a Sony 8mm lying around and all new cameras do support LANC protocol. So I went on a search for a decent Sony Handycam. CX560 was a first option. I've had no plans to go for a 3D camera as the technology is still in diapers but in the late summer this year I've invested in a new TV set which supports 3D and price overhead was not that great of a hurdle... Thanks to the staff at the local Sony store I could try to marry the case and the TD10 and two weeks later I was filming hammerhead sharks in the Red sea. Although it's quite big and hard to fit in a bag, let alone a pocket, TD10 is my constant companion and the movies are stunning. A letdown is a lack of Mac software so most of my footage is still unedited.

Not ready for prime time.

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

Sony 3D shortcomings.  No tele macro in 3D mode.  No IR mode.  No webcam function.  No time-lapse function.  No GPS.  No underwater case.  No filter mount so no filters available (underwater color correction, polarizer) It only has 60Gb usable, not 64Gb. Cannot take photo if camera is in 3d mode. You have to manually put camera in 2d mode, take photo, then hope you remember to put it back in 3D mode before you shoot more video. Are you kidding me?  No wifi data transfer.  USB data transfers too slow. No where near maxing out USB 2.0 bandwidth.    Copying from ram should be waaay fast.  Firmware issue?    If you have to copy off the videos before using the camera you better be prepared to WAIT! I normally can copy 100Gb onto my laptop from my external usb drive in about 15 minutes so i figured copying from the ram in the camera would be faster. NOT!  It's been 4 hours and I'm maybe half way done. Now i know why the camera warns you to connect AC power when connecting via USB to the computer - they don't make a battery big enough to last as long as the transfer process takes. When copying from the USB hard drive the drive light is solid green. When copying from the camera it blinks for half a millisecond about every second or so. Thanks Sony for wasting half a day of my vacation. This camera is going back. If you don't honor the return I will decline the charge with the credit card people.  My recommendation is to wait for the next generation units to see if they get it right then, unless you like pain and frustration.

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:

I purchased this video camera two months ago and I have just come back from China and Hong Kong with great footage. I also use it to film school sports, and the response from other parents is invariably one of amazement. I had to purchase Sony Vegas to edit my movies, and I wish Sony would supply this software with the camera (hint hint). I will soon buy a 3-D television to show my movies to family and friends. In the meantime, I will keep my invaluable 3-D memories on my hard drive. One day 3-D cameras will be cheaper and easier to operate. I decided not to wait, because some of the best parts of my life will have gone, and memories will have washed away like teardrops in the rain.

Great Video Quality, even in low light

Comments about Sony Full HD Flash 3D Handycam Grey Camcorder:
