The old side-by-side that was left by the previous home owner quit unexpectedly and I wanted to get a top-freezer model so I could keep large items in the freezer. Unfortunately, there were very few Whirlpool models of any kind available in my area for immediate delivery, so I chose this model. I like the in-door storage for milk and soda cans, and love having a large, lighted freezer, but I'm disappointed in the arrangement of the shelves in the refrigerator. I had to remove the middle shelf in order to store 2-liter bottles upright on the bottom shelf, and had to lower the top shelf to make room for my water pitcher. Instead of having 3 shelves, I now have 2. Also, I have to bend down in order to see and pull items off the top shelf. (I'm 6'2" tall.) The freezer and refrigerator work well to keep food cold, but it is louder than the previous one. I can hear it turn on and off from my bedroom at the opposite end of the house. (1650 sq. ft. ranch.) I like the outside style except for one thing. The handles have sharp edges. Even a slight rounding would've been better. Mine does not have the built-in ice maker, so I can't comment on that.

I thought this fridge would be great when I got it--energy efficient, roomy, good for the space. And then I tried to switch the side the door opened on. This should be a simple process, but it wasn't with this thing--the screws were hard to reach, the plugs to cover holes were so flimsy they fell apart and couldn't be used on the other side, the freaking Whirlpool logo scratched the paint when it came off, etc.All of this wouldn't be more than a nuisance, except that the screws themselves were very soft. As a result, I radished out a screw head the very first time, using--get this--a hand tool. That's pretty bad. The screw couldn't be removed after that, so I cut off the head and replaced the door minus one screw, figuring it wouldn't matter.Of course it mattered--it mattered because the hinges are made with open holes for the screws. What, did they save $.0000002 on the cost of the metal by doing that? So, yes, the door fell off, the shelves broke--I've had this thing maybe two months, and it looks like it's been through a war. This was very disappointing, and I don't intend to buy Whirlpool again.

simple and near perfect for one.
Comments about Whirlpool Black Top-Freezer Refrigerator:
I wanted a basic refrigerator with no bells and whistles. This has been near perfect. Lots of shelf and drawer space. I say near perfect because I had to leave out one of the door shelves to have enough tall bottle storage. Otherwise, this is the perfect refrigerator for one.

Great Basic Frig
I like the flat drawer for things like meats and cheeses. It's nice to have a separate compartment for eggs and butter. The door fits a lot of different sized condiments.
Good value for our purposes
We have access to a lot of fresh produce earlier than much of the country due to the warmer temps. Hubby wanted to take advantage when we had the chance and buy some to "put up" for winter. I prefer to freeze them, so we needed a refrigerator to store them in until ready to process, as well as freezer space for them over time. The Whirlpool wasn't overly expensive, and is serving our purposes very well. The freezer is about halfway full of fresh veggies, ready to use with dinner, or to put into soups. I was able to put some varieties into the fridge while I worked others and prepared them for freezing. I love the convenience of having more fridge and freezer space!
energy efficient but . . .

this is a basic refrigerator which follows the traditional freezer on top and fridge on the bottom. It is super energy efficient. Sadly, I did not realize that refrigerator space is sacrificed for larger freezer space which I did not need. So, while a good refrigerator, it is not large enough.

Looks good on the outside.

Beware not coolness dial in freezer - not cold enough to have solid ice cream.

Perfect for my kitchen!
from Phoenix, AZ, United States
I was very happy to find this refrigerator that actually fit the space available in my kitchen. I love the easily adjustable glass shelves and the large deli drawer. The ice maker is also a big plus. My only "dislike" is the unequal sizes of the crisper drawers. I have a difficult time dividing my produce by "fruits" and "vegetables" and having them fit.
Perfect Refrigerator for basic need
I bought this refrigerator a month ago to replace my old one with the same brand. The refrigerator is quite, spacious, and cool enough to keep my food in fresh condition for weeks. The low electrical consumption makes this refrigerator PERFECT!
Well-made basic refrigerator
from Suffolk County, NY, United States
The refrigerator has performed very well since taking delivery in mid-March. It's easy to use, easy to adjust, and pleasant to the eye. If there is a negative, it's the noise level which, while not distracting, is a little higher than the previous refrigerator (a Frigidaire).
Doors not parallel
from Derby, KS, United States
I am happy for the most part however I could not get the upper and lower door parallel. Kind of frustrating. Also the recommended thermostat setting is not cold enough.
Wish I kept my 35 year old refrigerator
Better and quieter than the GE fridge that never worked properly. Have to keep room in the high 70's to work right. Freezer has frost over all the food.
