I use a high end graphics workstation with 2 GeForce GTX 260 (896MB) graphics cards, 3 internal hard drives, 2 CD drives, and 2 external hard drives. The computer uses a 1000W power supply. I wondered if even the 1500VA UPS would be sufficient for my workstation, 22" monitor, external drives, and cable modem and router. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this UPS handles all of my equipment, even at peak load. I find the "load" reading on the front of the UPS hovers around 65-70% at peak load on my computer (graphic rendering, gaming, video rendering, etc.) and drops to about 20-30% when the computer is idling. The XS 1500 handles it all without skipping a beat. I have even plugged an additional computer, a network storage computer, into the battery backup, and it only adds about 20% load to the UPS. It's really an incredible piece of technology. Don't skimp and get a small one if you have a high-powered system. This is the device you really need - and the price between it and the 1000VA or 1300VA models... it's not even worth second guessing. Get this one and don't be disappointed. Another great feature: the battery is EASY to replace. Just slide off a door on the unit (no tools required) and pull on the tabs to yank out the battery. Slide in a new one and you're ready to go. This unit is truly an INVESTMENT that you won't get rid of any time soon. And a 3 year warranty? On a UPS? Outstanding! Cons: I'm not sure how useful the "eco" power-saving feature is. It basically works by turning off certain designated plugs on the back of the unit when it detects that the device plugged into the "master" outlet - presumably your computer - is turned off. This might be great for a printer or something else that doesn't need battery backup, but it doesn't make sense for things like my external hard drives - which require battery backup - but the plugs for "eco control" are surge-protection only, not battery backup. Kind of weird. I'd want the eco controlled plugs to be battery backup, too. That makes the most sense.

Part of my Application I am using one XS 150 to protecting a Vizio® LCD TV, a DVD player, and a cable box, and a switchable LED light (for emergencies). The other unit I am protecting a Dell Computer, a 22 inch Monitor, HP Officejet Pro printer, Altec Lansing Sound System, and a number of powered USB hubs. My third unit I am protecting another Dell computer, Ethernet router/PBX, and Cable Modem. Compared with my older units (Back-Up SX 1300 and RS 1500), the XS 1500 run a lot cooler. I always worried about leaving SX and RX on when I was away from the house. On the down side, the power cord may be 6 feet according to the technical specifications but it’s about 1 1/2 feet short on the outside of the box. This can be real frustration when your desk is set up in away that XS can’t reach. Normally one would not think or worry about how much wire is on the inside of the UPS box, but I guess APC did. I just see it as a deal breaker for some people that have a long way to go to the wall outlet. I know some people will not like the way the outlets are setup with less outlets for battery backup and more outlets with just surge protection. But on the other hand, those surge protection outlets can come in handy when you need to plug in something that does not need battery back-up, no more adding power strips to make up for not having outlets on this side of the UPS. I also like the idea of the Power-Saving Master and Controlled outlets. Most of my AV applications can’t use this, but that does not mean I still can’t use it else where. For my system, The Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) is a must. I would think anyone living out in farm community, or in the city with squirrels, or anyplace you have branches falling on power lines, would be happy with the AVR protecting their computer system. Already in the last month, I can tell the AVR has lowered the count number of battery trigger events compared with my other two models I just wish that all my UPS came with the AVR. I need to point out, when setting up the XS unit, it really does help to make sure you follow the instructions (picture) in making sure the battery is hooked up right. I made the mistake of not only flipping over the battery, but I flipped over the unit too not thinking about it. Thank God for Pictures, because once I realized how the door had to go back on, I realized I put the battery in wrong. Also, if your like me and have your AV system hooked up in your bed room, you may really want the LCD Display off when you don’t need it. The instructions were wrong on Page 3, the unit has to be on (like it states on page5), then you hold down the DISPLAY button for 2 seconds, and then it will toggle on or off. I like the display, but I still miss the red display of the other UPSs. Red displays don’t keep you awake at night according to Doctor Oz’s tv show.

Great Unit If It Works Out of the Box

By

from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

I originally purchased the unit at a retail store and it did not work out of the box. I reset the battery and it started but the battery check fails on a cold start. I put in a service request and a representative from Schneider called a few days later and quickly sent another unit. The second unit was dead on arrival. I reset the battery and it started but upon turning it off and moving it to my computer it was dead again. Schneider quickly sent out another unit which works perfectly. Schneider support is great. I hope they find out what the quality control issue is. I love their products.

Quiet and simple

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

I was going to spring for a higher end APC model, but reviews indicated that this model, unlike others, is very quiet -- a priority for me. Well, it is whisper quiet, even next to me in a cabinet partially open. For a test I connected to my refrigerator to see what happens when running on batteries. To my surprise it ran for an hour, with the LED display showing clearly and accurately levels of battery left. Recharging the UPS took overnight. I moved it back to my office to replace an old 650VA CyberPower. Despite hot weather, no overheating, no fans kicking in, no strange beeping. Time will tell durability, but out-of-the-box it is good value.

Good Unit

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

This would be a GREAT unit if the power chute software was for a MAC computer. There are settings that you can change with the software a LOT easier then using the front panel. Yes Mac has built in UPS support but there still needs to be a way to change settings on the unit via software.

APC Unit

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

Aaaargh!! I just finished typing a long review about this unit when their website just asked if I wanted to continue then blanked out everything I typed!!! Short story this time... Bought 10 months ago and it failed a few months later with F06 code. APC told me it had faulty relay welds and they immediately sent a warranty replacement. Replacement unit just failed 6 months later with F06 code. I was told this time that my computer was to blame!! What??!!!!! They claimed it pulled (I forget exact wording they used) power from the unit that caused the failure of the relay welds. I made sure the power range was more than adequate before purchase. Many others on the internet have had the same problem with this model. I like APC products and have been using them for over a decade, but STAY AWAY from this one!!!

Not thrilled

By

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

I've had the BACK-UPS BX1500G for a few years now, and I suppose that I should be happy that the battery lasted this long. From my perspective, though, this is just yet another in a series of UPSs from APC that don't see hard duty, but wind up failing in what seems to me to be a short period of time. I rarely have power outages at my house, and I do like the features, power, and look of this UPS. I'm just tired of dealing with replacement batteries for my UPSs from APC. Maybe it's just me. Instead of getting a replacement, I think I'll try another brand and see if it's just the nature of the battery beast.

It works

By

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

I read the specs and reviews, and decided this UPS should meet my needs. My system is a typical 7-year old home unit: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe M/B, OCZ 620W P/S, 3Gb RAM, 2 optical drives, 2 IDE hard drives, USB card reader, 21" flat-screen monitor, HP printer, modem, speakers, and Windows XP. Granted, it is not one of the high-powered systems gamers use, but it is not intended to be. I charged the UPS for 24 hours, plugged everything in, and it worked as expected, with 36 minutes usage available. I have a comment for those with Dell problems. Only two things should be susceptible to the UPS’ stepped sine wave output - the power supply and motherboard. Actually only the P/S as the M/B is fed from it. The P/S is expected to condition and provide stable power to the M/B. My experience with Dell computers shows they use the smallest P/S that will operate the computer as shipped. I think your problems are caused solely by Dell’s factory supplied P/S being so small. Replace it with a more powerful one. I recommend operating any P/S in the middle third of its output range, with a minimum of 700W to leave room for growth. Don’t get the cheapest thing available - get a good quality unit. Although not absolute, the warranty period is a good indicator. Many have 5 or 7 years. They cost more, but you get what you pay for. Stay away from those with a shorter warranty. Remember this: Clean, stable power is one of the most important things to any computer.

This unit is simple to set up and has all the features I need to protect my iMac and printer. I especially like the fact there is no need to install any software for the backups to communicate with my iMac. It works as promised and quality is number one from APC>

Worse Purchase Ever

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about APC 865 Watts Power-saving Back-UPS XS:

BEWARE! This unit does not work with all personal computers. My Dell XPS is not compatible with it. I had to wait until the power failed and the UPS didn't work to learn that the unit would not work with my PC. The recommended solution is for me to purchase another APC unit. So don't buy this product or any other unit expecting it to work. The warranty only covers defects in the device. The fact that your PC is not supported is considered your problem.
