I will start by saying I LOVE THIS RANGE!!! I was worried about buying a self-cleaning oven because my mother and sister both had self-cleaning stoves and the food seemed to always burn around the edges but not cook well on the inside. Pies, cookies, etc. would be terrible coming out of these ovens. I finally bit the bullet because I just cannot stand the cleaning chemicals any longer that I was using with my old stove. The first thing I did was bake cookies and all I can say is these are the best cookies I've ever made. They were baked to perfection! I have only had the range for 3 days, but I've been cooking all meals with it each day (including breakfast). I had company over last night and cooked quite a bit of food. I've baked cookies, cake, homemade pizza, heated soup, pancakes, broiled steak, and cooked spaghetti on this range so far. I cannot believe how quickly it brings water to a boil. My soup boiled over because in less than a minute it was boiling and I was expecting the stove to be slower than the microwave. It's actually quicker than the microwave at heating liquids. The nice thing was the stove top was not scalding hot like my old stove would be, so the soup did not stick or sizzle dry onto the surface of the stove top. I was able to wipe it off immediately with a paper towel and then a damp cloth. The convection oven browns nicely. My cake was moist - my old oven would dry this cake recipe out most of the time. The new oven cooked it to perfection. The pizza cheese was nicely melted and the corners of the pizza were browned nicely. My chocolate chip cookies were moister than usual. I'm not certain what the convection oven does differently, but my food tastes better and it's very noticeable. I love the controls on the stove. Everything is touch button and it's very responsive to touch. I find the controls easy to read, but dark enough to give the range a modern space age look. I think it looks sharp, and I had many good comments from friends yesterday on how beautiful it made my kitchen look. The controls are not back-lit, but most kitchens have a light over the range. I have a range hood with a light which makes it extremely easy to read the controls. In the daytime I don't even need a light on. The light from the window lights up the controls nicely. I had no issues at all adjusting the settings of the stove or the oven. The clock is bright, and the digits to enter the oven temperature do illuminate nicely. The oven temperature shows in red LED lights, while the clock is green. It's a nice contrast of color when the oven is on. The biggest problem I had with the stove was trying to get the legs adjusted. The range is quite heavy. The wrench I had was too small to go around the legs properly, so I raised the stove a bit and placed a piece of board (2x4) under the stove to hold it up off of the ground while I manually turned the legs by hand. Once they became loosened it was extremely easy to adjust them. I had to raise the range up 3/4" to meet my countertops. That was the worst of it. I suggest that if you are going to do it this way, you should have someone help you as the stove is quite heavy and you don't want it to fall on you (or your foot). You also don't want to damage it, so be very gentle when resting it on the board. The aluminum is beautiful. It does not seem cheap feeling or looking. However, like all aluminum it will show fingerprints more than the older "white" stoves. I cleaned it with window cleaner and it shines like a diamond. Since I do not have children, I don't see any reason for fingerprint issues. The handle on the stove doesn't show the prints so much, so if you simply use the handle to open the oven you won't have any issues with marks on the stove. Either way, it takes a split second to clean any marks, and you can't beat the beauty of a nice aluminum finish. I tested the self cleaning feature last night. The oven produced a funny odor, so I turned on the overhead fan. In the instructions it states the oven will produce an odor at first as the lubricants and substances used to assemble the stove burn off. Especially at the beginning it is good to keep the hood fan on. Last night when I baked the cake a while after the self cleaning completed I did not notice any odor except for the chocolate cake baking. The oven will beep when it reaches the desired temperature too. That's a nice feature that I never had before. No more checking the temperature every minute to see if it's OK to put something in. As far as heating up the oven, it does take longer than my old oven did. The elements were exposed in my old range. This new range has the element buried inside the metal frame. As a result it takes a bit longer to get to the desired temperature. It's worth it though. The heat is even and the results amazed me with everything I baked. The other thing that impressed me was how well insulated the oven is. Normally when baking the oven heats up my kitchen. On the PHB925STSS, the oven door stays barely warm to touch during a 400 degree baking cycle for my homemade pizza. I am really impressed with this unit. I have not had any issues with it, but should anything happen I promise to come back and write about it. The stove looks so nice in my kitchen. It's definitely a welcomed item to my home.

We replaced all of our GE appliances with updated GE appliances ~8 months ago … All have disappointed us. While we have not #yet# had any of the reliability issues other reviewers have mentioned, we find ‘using’ the appliances a constant source of frustration. The source of this frustration and which is common across all of the appliances is that the lettering of all pad controls is gray on a black background, with no back lighting ! You can see this for yourself in the appliance photos on this site, and zooming in makes it even more apparent. The natural lighting within our kitchen area is well within the range of normal but, because of the lack of contrast between the lettering and the background it’s necessary to turn on additional lights #overhead kitchen light, microwave above the stove, etc.# just to be able to ‘see/read’ the pad controls. You almost need a flashlight to use the controls, and I’m exaggerating only slightly. To us, this seems to be a design blunder … GE could have at least offered control back lighting as an ‘option’ which we would have gladly paid for. Another disappointment is that the temperature/clock/timer lighting on the stove and microwave is greenish while on the refrigerator it’s white. All are Profile appliances, all purchased new and all purchased at the same time. I understand designs change over time but, putting out a ‘current’ line of appliances #e.g. Profile# with mixed lighting shows lack of attention to detail. The GE Engineers, Human Factors and Quality Control folks should spend more time with these units in the ‘real’ world and less time in lab. So disappointing, and so irritating …

Works good, but

Comments about GE Profile 30" Stainless Steel Free-Standing Electric Range:

Got this Christmas Eve and like everything but right rear burner will burn food on the low setting. I have to call and see if it is a problem or it is working right. The oven light does not come on when you open the oven door and hot surface indicator does not show which surface is hot.

Glass Top Range

Comments about GE Profile 30" Stainless Steel Free-Standing Electric Range:

I bought this range several months ago. The burners warm instantly. Water boils very quickly. The only draw back is the glass top. It requires regular cleaning. However, if you keep up with it, it stays beautiful.

We just installed this new GE Range to replace a similar older unit. Really like the multi-heating surface options. The range has a clean, easy-to-use appearance. Great design to allow easy cleaning of the oven bottom. The controls are easy to read and use. We look forward to many years of cooking and baking.

very unsatisfied!

By mark5k

from Furlong Pa.

Comments about GE Profile 30" Stainless Steel Free-Standing Electric Range:

Very unhappy with this oven. Takes literally 1/2 an hour to boil a pot of water. Constantly have to clean the black stove top. It shows everything. Preheat is slow in the oven and baking is uneven. Liquid is allowed to fall into air vents on the top of the oven door thus allowing water streaks between the oven window glass. The icly wat to clean this is to tke apart the door.

My distributor is the best

By linda40

from Victoria, IL, United States

Comments about GE Profile 30" Stainless Steel Free-Standing Electric Range:

I have owned Ge ranges for over 30 years. This model will take some getting used to due to dual control knobs for burners with dual sizes. The storage drawer is a bit roomier, which is good. Also, the manual says that cast iron is not recommended on smooth tops. I disagree. My last range was 16 years old, I used cast iron on it almost daily and there was no scratching issue. I'm careful to not drag my pans much, but the surface holds up. Common sense.
