Whether it's a classical sonata, jazz, country, classic rock, or punk fusion and everything in between, this Sony boombox will make your music come to life with its deep bass performance, detailed midrange, and super clear vocals. Be prepared to revel in the high fidelity world of Sony portable audio with this music machine at your next house party. This Sony boombox, because of its full range speaker system and Power Drive Woofer backed by a discrete 20 watt (RMS) power amplifier system, can successfully compete in sound quality with much more expensive component stereo systems. Since this Sony boombox features the ultimate aggressive power design, I no longer have a need for that large stereo system in my home. In fact, it is almost a slight of this product to call it a boombox because of its unique and powerful sound that it produces. The large and beautiful red speaker system consists of two full range 4 inch speakers, two 0.8 inch tweeters, and a 5 inch Power Drive Woofer with three distinct levels of bass adjustment. The Power Drive Woofer features Position Off, Position 1, and Position 2 bass reinforcement settings. The Power Drive Woofer rests in an acoustically tuned cabinet that is designed to achieve maximum low frequency bass response. The Power Drive Woofer lights up in bright red when it is engaged. The Sony XPLOD boombox feature set is the best that I have ever seen in this product category. The remote can power the stereo on in AC power mode and turn it off in both battery and AC power modes. There is a 0-90 minute sleep timer function which can power the radio off automatically at six selectable intervals of time. A Function button allows the user to switch back and forth between the FM/AM tuner, CD player, Audio In, and cassette player. The CD key allows direct access to the CD player. The Repeat key activates CD repeat play mode. The Enter and Clear buttons are used to program and delete CD tracks into or out of this unit's memory. There are Tune + and Tune - buttons to navigate radio stations manually in ascending or descending frequency order. There are Preset + and Preset – controls for selecting preset stations in ascending or descending order one station at a time. The remote can raise or lower the volume to the desired listening level. The remote commander does not offer a numeric keypad. As a result, the remote control does not feature direct input preset station or CD track access. The stereo operates on 8 D batteries and 2 AA batteries for the supplied remote control. AC power is also available for the unit. A detachable AC power cord is supplied with the stereo. The boombox is heavy and therefore, not easily portable because of it. The LCD display is small and should be backlit. I do wish it had even more amplifier power and an HD radio tuner built-in. The Power Drive Woofer lighting system is disabled when the sleep timer function is activated. The Power Drive Woofer becomes inactive when headphones are connected to this unit. Of course, this Sony boombox has a sturdy fold-down recessed carry handle for reliable transport of this unit to another destination. You can also play tunes from your iPod/iPhone or any other MP3 player via an auxiliary line input jack.
