I bought this generator after Hurricane Irene (2 days after). I had lost electricity for 16 hours. Of course, the sump pump systems in the basement were unable to run and as I live in a low area, the basement flooded & my furnace burner was underwater as well. It topped out at 9" of water in the basement. Power was restored. The sump pumps emptied out the basement. $500 later the furnace was repaired & running when the power went out for the 2nd time. Water was still pouring into the basement. Ran out to Agway & bought this generator. Had it assembled, up & running before the water reached the furnace (just barely). I agree with the previous reviewer on the poor instructions & lack of information in the manual. I might add that I still haven't found the spark plug, as that isn't included in the diagram, although when to clean & change it is! Also, the gas gauge doesn't work. I would have returned it, but being in bind, with water rising...the gas gauge didn't seem all that important. It started on the 2nd pull & had the water pumped out in no time. I have to say that is a great machine & was simple enough to assemble & start once you fought your way through the poor diagram & instructions. Easy enough for a 57yr.old woman who has never run a generator to put together, start & run. I would definitely recommend it. Manual needs improvement!!

Let's just say the generac recommended repair facility was not surprised when I brought it in with a leak between the carborator and engine. A common trend regardless of maintenance performed. Have had for 9 months and it is strong and powered 2 fridges, a portable AC unit, sat TV and LED TV, and a fan with no trouble. Ran it for 12 hours and then rested for 2 hours. Fuel tank worked great for sustaining the endurance of 12 hours under the load once the fridges caught up to maintaining temps vice cooling. I ran once a month and it failed this June after testing it again. Started with no problems on one pull every time. Just started it to check before fully filling gas and upon return and filling to capacity on fuel it leaked at a cup every 60 seconds. UNSAT. Being fixed now. Don't know any other generators out there but satisfied that it is a good system that my wife can operate since it starts with one pull of the string. Critical on east coast. Total of 10 days without power during the summer months makes like interesting. Best of luck.

Our only source of power for 5 months.

Comments about Generac GP Series 5.5kW Portable Generator:
Four years ago we built an off-grid home in SE Arizona. We had timed our arrival to coincide with the installation of our solar system. Of course, it didn't work out that way. The batteries had to ordered at least 2 months in advance because they were made to order in Nova Scotia, Canada and then shipped by ground to AZ. Well, ours were involved in a transportation accident so the process had to start over. We had a smaller 3500W generator that would be insufficient to run the whole house for the 4 to 5 months that we had to wait, so we bought the Generac GP5500 and ran it daily for up to 16 hours a day for 5 months. The only maintenance I had to do on it was change the oil. After it's faithful service, it was retired to serve as a twice-a-week well pump generator. Something gave out on it last weekend and I was not able to find anyone to service it before I needed to pump water again, so we went to a local dealer and bought a new Generac RS5500. As I type this, it is pumping water for the first time. I do intend to repair the first one, though. Living off-grid you can never have too many power sources. ;)

Fired it up for a test run after purchasing it before Hurricane Joaquin veered off the East Coast. Ran like a top and now it's in the shed waiting for the power to go out. I feel so much better knowing I now have back up power for my family.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
So far so good. The unit was very easy to put together (only 8 bolts). Started right up. Plan on running it this weekend and changing the oil out as the manual said too. I suppose I'll be back to review again after we lose power and I actually need it.
Great generator, very noisy, easy wheels and handle set up...overall great as a backup source of power...
It works great!
We bought it for camping. We had no issues at all with it... Little loud but that's why we bought extension cords!

I bought the GP 5500 one year ago, after the brutal winter of 2013, in which we lost power for 5 days. This unit is more than enough for my single home. It provides all of the power I need for the essentials needed in our home. I would recommend this brand to everyone.
Appears to be a fantastic product
This product was recommended to me by a friend. I have used this product to power some hand tools so far. Performance has been excellent. I bought this unit for backup for power outages in bad weather. If the product performs as well as it does now, I will be very pleased and happy with the purchase.
WHAT A GENERATOR!!!!
from Oklahoma City
I was recently on a jobsite. The general contractor could not provide enough power using rented generators. I got tired of running out of power. So, I purchased the Generac GP5500 and fired it up on the site for my crews use. As the day went on I noticed other subcontractors were running their extension cords over to my generator. The next day I arrived on the site, and the electrician had wired the interior building lights to the generator. Now, all the lights were LED ceiling lights but it ran all the lights as well as provided power to trade equipment. WHAT A GENERATOR!!!!
Great generator, just a couple nitpics
Overall, this is a fine generator. Handles electrical loads as advertised, so no complaints from a performance standpoint. Just a couple suggestions: for ease of setup and maintenance, include a funnel for oil filling or extend the oil filler for easier use, make it clear in the setup instructions that the entire bottle of supplied oil should be put in, Also, mention that the oil dipstick should be screwed in all the way when checking oil level. Disclaimer: if any of these were covered in the instructions, then I missed them - my fault. Like most, I didn't read every word of the manual. It works great, but this is one noisy machine. Seems like more noise from the mechanicals than the exhaust (excellent muffler, by the way). Offering a kit to "wrap" the machine, or a vented cover, for quieter operation and weather protection would be welcome. I'd buy one!

Quality generator, but a little on the loud side. Easy start.
