I bought this generator after Hurricane Irene (2 days after). I had lost electricity for 16 hours. Of course, the sump pump systems in the basement were unable to run and as I live in a low area, the basement flooded & my furnace burner was underwater as well. It topped out at 9" of water in the basement. Power was restored. The sump pumps emptied out the basement. $500 later the furnace was repaired & running when the power went out for the 2nd time. Water was still pouring into the basement. Ran out to Agway & bought this generator. Had it assembled, up & running before the water reached the furnace (just barely). I agree with the previous reviewer on the poor instructions & lack of information in the manual. I might add that I still haven't found the spark plug, as that isn't included in the diagram, although when to clean & change it is! Also, the gas gauge doesn't work. I would have returned it, but being in bind, with water rising...the gas gauge didn't seem all that important. It started on the 2nd pull & had the water pumped out in no time. I have to say that is a great machine & was simple enough to assemble & start once you fought your way through the poor diagram & instructions. Easy enough for a 57yr.old woman who has never run a generator to put together, start & run. I would definitely recommend it. Manual needs improvement!!

Let's just say the generac recommended repair facility was not surprised when I brought it in with a leak between the carborator and engine. A common trend regardless of maintenance performed. Have had for 9 months and it is strong and powered 2 fridges, a portable AC unit, sat TV and LED TV, and a fan with no trouble. Ran it for 12 hours and then rested for 2 hours. Fuel tank worked great for sustaining the endurance of 12 hours under the load once the fridges caught up to maintaining temps vice cooling. I ran once a month and it failed this June after testing it again. Started with no problems on one pull every time. Just started it to check before fully filling gas and upon return and filling to capacity on fuel it leaked at a cup every 60 seconds. UNSAT. Being fixed now. Don't know any other generators out there but satisfied that it is a good system that my wife can operate since it starts with one pull of the string. Critical on east coast. Total of 10 days without power during the summer months makes like interesting. Best of luck.

GP5500 Comes through during multiple rounds of storms
Comments about Generac GP Series 5.5kW Portable Generator:
We have been meaning to purchase a backup generator for sometime now, even doing a lot of research, mostly online, but also asked friends and neighbors too. From the research we did about backup generators, it was always stressed to buy one with a minimum of 5000 watts. We were leaning toward Generac, but we just never made the purchase. Mostly because, when we did lose power, it was short lived. So we thought, do we really need it? Well, that was last year. This year, just after we lost power during one of the nastiest storms to pass through Indianapolis, Indiana in a very long time, we made the decision to get a Generac 5500. We are so glad we did. This month, July of 2015, we were out of power for 2.5 days. Granted the GP5500 has the capability to power our entire home, at this time we needed it to power our Sump pump, freezer, fridge, and a few other electrical devices. Since we had received many inches of rain in June, and now in July, ground water was seeping into our sump pump pit and tripping the pump about every 5-7 minutes. So, we knew we couldn't keep up with hauling multiple 5 gallon buckets of water up the stairs of our basement and out the garage for more than just a few hours. Fortunately for us the assembly and quick start of the GP5500(unit) took less than 35 minutes! What made it even nicer was the power cord that came with the unit. Once plugged it into the unit, and after we had the unit up and running, we could add up to four additional electronic appliances. This is in addition to the four other outlets on the unit itself. Sweet! The GP5500 performed exceptionally in our emergency situation. We had it running our sump pump, freezer, refrigerator, a couple small fans, and a lamp, while able to charge our cell phones overnight. Of course we had to stop the unit to fill the gas tank. We also decided to rest the unit for around 20-30 minutes prior to refueling, and and checked the oil. Over the course of the 2.5 days, we averaged over 9 hours of uninterrupted power! On the last day, when the sump pump was running about every 15 minutes, I determined the GP5500 could have ran 11 hours easy! We have been very pleased by the performance of the GP5500. Although it was a little more money than we really wanted to pay, it was worth the investment. I should also mention, our unit did not have the electronic start, but it was no more difficult than starting a regular lawn mower. So I would recommend the GP5500 for anyone that is on the fence of taking that step toward purchasing a backup generator. Easy setup. Easy operation.

Good generator for the money
From ATCO nj. Was without power for 7 days. Generator ran flawlessly .saved all food in refrigerator and freezer. Well worth the cost
Juist in case!
The Generac 5500 was purchased because I live in Oklahoma. Weather and storms can cause power issue to come up year round. I find peace of mind knowing what ever my power situation is I can plan to have a least some degree of a normal household operation.
from Fort Wayne
We had a major storm come thru on June 27, 2015 and knocked out all the power. I was told we would not get power until Tuesday June 30, 2015 at 11:59 pm and I needed to save my freezer food and other medicine so I had to get something quick. There was nothing to be had in the area of Fort Wayne, I had to go to Indianapolis, In to get it. I think the cost is a bit high for the machine. I again lost power on Tuesday June 30, at 346 pm I had the machine running for about 2 hours and it worked good.
This product does the job
We lost power for six days and I was very happy with the job the generator did. It kept my refridge running, TV and DVR player and a couple of lamps. I will be adding a manual transfer switch so if loss power again I will be able to run gas boiler to have heat if needed and hot water.
This Generac GPseries 5500 saved us during the recent massive South Jersey storm that knocked out our power for 5 days. It was easy to hook up our patio fridge, window box AC, lamps, and fans. It was super reliable, easy to start, and a snap to setup.
I purchased this generator during a mass storm in June 2015. We were without power for 4 days - which was lucky compared to others in our area. We used to to power 2 refrigerators & 1 freezer, and one night we used it for our oven & tv. It was easy to set up & begin operating quickly. We were mainly concerned with saving our food, as the weather was cool & we didn't need air conditioning or heat. It worked great - ran over 10 hours on 5 gallons of gas! We ran extension cords to neighbors, and eventually they ran out and bought their own generator. It is easily portable, easy to use, and easy to store for the next time. We now have peace of mind to "weather any storm" in the future.
Easy to use, 30 Amp power cable, compact
Very easy to setup and start. Runs smoothly. Plenty of power to run appliances.
the generator was very simple to set up. Just add oil and gasoline and you're ready to go. I needed this generator in an emergency hail storm situation. Torrential downpours and strong winds knocked the power out, so the sump pumps couldn't run. I had this generator up and running in about 5 minutes. Strongly recommend a Generac.
Just put it together!
Great machine. Starts fast and does what it is designed to do. One little issue- the pull starter could be moved a little so it's not so close to the handle when starting. Haven't needed it in an emergency yet, but expecting it to provide the power I need when I need it!
