I bought this generator after Hurricane Irene (2 days after). I had lost electricity for 16 hours. Of course, the sump pump systems in the basement were unable to run and as I live in a low area, the basement flooded & my furnace burner was underwater as well. It topped out at 9" of water in the basement. Power was restored. The sump pumps emptied out the basement. $500 later the furnace was repaired & running when the power went out for the 2nd time. Water was still pouring into the basement. Ran out to Agway & bought this generator. Had it assembled, up & running before the water reached the furnace (just barely). I agree with the previous reviewer on the poor instructions & lack of information in the manual. I might add that I still haven't found the spark plug, as that isn't included in the diagram, although when to clean & change it is! Also, the gas gauge doesn't work. I would have returned it, but being in bind, with water rising...the gas gauge didn't seem all that important. It started on the 2nd pull & had the water pumped out in no time. I have to say that is a great machine & was simple enough to assemble & start once you fought your way through the poor diagram & instructions. Easy enough for a 57yr.old woman who has never run a generator to put together, start & run. I would definitely recommend it. Manual needs improvement!!

Let's just say the generac recommended repair facility was not surprised when I brought it in with a leak between the carborator and engine. A common trend regardless of maintenance performed. Have had for 9 months and it is strong and powered 2 fridges, a portable AC unit, sat TV and LED TV, and a fan with no trouble. Ran it for 12 hours and then rested for 2 hours. Fuel tank worked great for sustaining the endurance of 12 hours under the load once the fridges caught up to maintaining temps vice cooling. I ran once a month and it failed this June after testing it again. Started with no problems on one pull every time. Just started it to check before fully filling gas and upon return and filling to capacity on fuel it leaked at a cup every 60 seconds. UNSAT. Being fixed now. Don't know any other generators out there but satisfied that it is a good system that my wife can operate since it starts with one pull of the string. Critical on east coast. Total of 10 days without power during the summer months makes like interesting. Best of luck.

Just what we needed
Comments about Generac GP Series 5.5kW Portable Generator:
Bought this generator just before landfall of Hurricane Matthew. We were able to power both of our refrigerators and an upright freezer and chest freezer. We then switched over to our window AC unit and powered our microwave and two fans along with 2 lamps without a hiccup in power loss. It worked PERFECT! Very well pleased with this generator. In fact, it worked so well, I am considering having a transfer switch installed to hook directly into the generator just to keep from running drop cords throughout the house to the different items that need power.

Works great for house power
Bought this generator after last hurricane. Since then, I only had to use it once during a snow storm. Started on first pull and ran for hours without any problem. Overall a great product.
Excellent, so far.
Fortunately, we haven't had a power outage since I bought the 5500 -- Murphy's law in reverse. But unpacking, assembly and startup were simple and straightforward to understand. With the conversational directions and easy pull start, I made sure my wife could start and use it if I was away. Success. If and when we have to put it through its paces, I'll write another review.
Good Solid Machine
My experience with the GP5500 has be very favorable. If there was an option to give the machine a 4.5 star rating, that is what I would have rated it. Because there wasn't that option, I rated it 4 stars. I bought this generator to power essential services at my elderly mother's home in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. It performed very well in the nine days that she was without power and allowed my bedridden mother to stay in her home as she wished. I would not hesitate to by this machine again. Since Sandy, we have had a few occasions to use the machine for much shorter periods of time. It has always started with relative ease. The only criticism I have of the unit is that it is very noisy. Obviously, quiet operation is not the primary concern during an emergency situation. But it is worth noting in that multi-day operation of the unit does impose the burden of having to deal with the noise. I've purchased an extra long cable that allows us to get the machine further away from the house.
Exceptional value for the price !
The features of this generator and the cost exceed my expectations. it will handle any of my power needs during our twice a year blackouts in my area.
GP5500 = One tough genny.
The storm: The derecho of 2015 hit southern N.J. hard and fast leaving our part of Gloucester county without power for more than a week.The high winds knocked down many large, mature trees taking out the power of nearly our entire town.Our neighborhood was without power for eight days total, one of the last to have power restored. After locating one of the last generators within 100 miles I was pleased it was of a brand I had heard of .I worried it would be under-powered but that turned out not to be the case. Up and running: I used this genny to power my large kitchen refrigerator (new), ancient chest freezer, hot water heater/ furnace (oil/hydronic) lights, TV and computer. The GP5500 ran without a stutter for eight days. I changed the oil once and refilled it when the fuel level dropped to 1/4 tank. It easily ran all night on a full tank with these loads. Preparation and use: Refueling took about 10 to 15 minutes with 5 gallon gas cans and oil changes about the same. It takes about a quart of oil. The generator is easy to move around and wheels easily over the small bumps present in my yard. It was fully assembled when I picked it up from the hardware store. After a quick read of the well written instructions, I filled the crankcase and fuel tank. Turn a switch, fuel line open... It started on the first pull. I used extension cords run to my appliances during the storms aftermath and have since added a manual transfer switch to my electrical service. It now runs all the previous loads and six ceiling fans easily. Overall impression: This generator will serve emergency power needs for my 4 bedroom N.E. colonial home nicely. It seemed to be on the loud side at first but other portable generators in the neighborhood were audible over it. Re-fueling with gasoline can be a bit of a chore but for the storms I anticipate and the competitive price of the unit something I will deal with gladly. It is finished nicely with thick paint and seems well made. If you do not mind schlepping gasoline around and the minor mess it entails this is a good emergency power source.
Easy to operate, start, and maintain
I began my research for a portable generator that I could use at home to power several of the essential appliances in a power outage. I also wanted a generator that could used to power my travel trailer for long camping trips. After observing and testing other generators, I decided on the Generac because of price, ease of operation, portability, and reputation. The Generac 5500 watt generator easily filled the bill for both of the home and recreation requirements. It is simple to operate, easy to start, and maintain. I would highly recommend it for work, home, and recreation activities.
Seems to be a great generator. Should have bought this before I purchased a bargain brand at a bargain store. Guess you get what you pay for.
