I bought this generator after Hurricane Irene (2 days after). I had lost electricity for 16 hours. Of course, the sump pump systems in the basement were unable to run and as I live in a low area, the basement flooded & my furnace burner was underwater as well. It topped out at 9" of water in the basement. Power was restored. The sump pumps emptied out the basement. $500 later the furnace was repaired & running when the power went out for the 2nd time. Water was still pouring into the basement. Ran out to Agway & bought this generator. Had it assembled, up & running before the water reached the furnace (just barely). I agree with the previous reviewer on the poor instructions & lack of information in the manual. I might add that I still haven't found the spark plug, as that isn't included in the diagram, although when to clean & change it is! Also, the gas gauge doesn't work. I would have returned it, but being in bind, with water rising...the gas gauge didn't seem all that important. It started on the 2nd pull & had the water pumped out in no time. I have to say that is a great machine & was simple enough to assemble & start once you fought your way through the poor diagram & instructions. Easy enough for a 57yr.old woman who has never run a generator to put together, start & run. I would definitely recommend it. Manual needs improvement!!

Let's just say the generac recommended repair facility was not surprised when I brought it in with a leak between the carborator and engine. A common trend regardless of maintenance performed. Have had for 9 months and it is strong and powered 2 fridges, a portable AC unit, sat TV and LED TV, and a fan with no trouble. Ran it for 12 hours and then rested for 2 hours. Fuel tank worked great for sustaining the endurance of 12 hours under the load once the fridges caught up to maintaining temps vice cooling. I ran once a month and it failed this June after testing it again. Started with no problems on one pull every time. Just started it to check before fully filling gas and upon return and filling to capacity on fuel it leaked at a cup every 60 seconds. UNSAT. Being fixed now. Don't know any other generators out there but satisfied that it is a good system that my wife can operate since it starts with one pull of the string. Critical on east coast. Total of 10 days without power during the summer months makes like interesting. Best of luck.

I'd buy another !!
Comments about Generac GP Series 5.5kW Portable Generator:
Had these before and when I needed another, looked only for dealers that carried the Generac brand. Last Generac gen. worked better than any other brand I had used in the past and have to say, this one is just as good. First pull start just like the other and responds to load like a PRO !!!!!!!!! Need another, it'll be a Generac............... KK

This product was a life saver, very easy to use
This is the first time we had to buy a generator during hurricane Matthew in the South. It was very easy to refill and we had enough power to run most of the appliances and lights with fans. We did switch out the appliances so we did not overload it. It is a very good product and I know it will be there for me agin when I need it. I would recommend it to everyone. Plus we got a 3 year warranty which was a plus off my mind. I hope we never have to be without power again for a week, but at least I know I have a good back up next time.
Great Value for the Price
This is the first generator I have personally owned. I have used others that belonged to someone else. The Generac models were the most reliable I have seen over the years. It was easy to set-up.
Affordable & Reliable Backup Power
The Generac GP5500 generator is the first generator that I have used for home backup power. I purchased this generator a couple of months ago, and I found the price to be reasonable. This generator also looked good, and all parts were in perfect condition. I wired up a 10-4 SJOOW cord (with 240 volt L14-30 plug) to my transfer switch so that I could feed my entire breaker panel. We had our first power outage of the winter season yesterday, and it lasted approximately 9 hours. The GP5500 started right up, and it performed flawlessly. I was able to run everything in my house as normal, with just a couple of sensible exceptions. I did not do laundry, nor did I try to run my electric stove (I did find that one large burner, or the two small burners on the stovetop could be run if needed though). After 9 hours of supplying power to the house, the GP5500 used only about 5 gallons of gas. The generator was not heavily loaded, but I was pleased with that fuel consumption rate. My one "wish" is that these generators came with a load or watt meter of some kind, but that is just the engineer in me. Long story short, I am VERY happy with my GP5500 generator. It worked perfectly and even surpassed my expectations. It is a true bargain, and I will highly recommend the GP5500 (and other Generac products) to anyone.
We have been using this generator for a while now and we love it. Thankyou GENERAC
I paid a little more than msrp. I ordered it at a local hardware store before Sandy when none of the big boys could help me. When sandy hit I was ready. Though I had to drive 75 miles to get gasoline. Then I was set. Ran my house (small in size ) with no trouble. The 5500 ran much longer than I expected and wasn't noisy at all. I give my Generac 2 thumbs up!
great product and features
Use for back up stand by for my house. Set up with Transfer switch in house. Features may easy for even my wife to use.
Purchased for Home Back up and Special Events
Just Purchased this Generator so I Haven't had a chance to operate it under load yet but it does start easily. Store where purchased Did all the preliminaries, Maintenance, Oil & a full tank of fuel, "Convenient". Generator is well built and everything is in an easy to get to location, Weight in not as heavy as expected. Very nice unit
Perfect for me. I bought it for backup.
My General is perfect. Easy start up and refueling, even my wife was able to keep it going. It came with all of the appropriate cords and easy instructions on how to use it. The many outlets with over load breakers for safety. Generac is a name above the rest. I was so satisfied during hurricane Mathew I recommend it to everyone on my job that was interested in purchasing a Generator. I am going to upgrade to the General standby.
Just what we needed
Bought this generator just before landfall of Hurricane Matthew. We were able to power both of our refrigerators and an upright freezer and chest freezer. We then switched over to our window AC unit and powered our microwave and two fans along with 2 lamps without a hiccup in power loss. It worked PERFECT! Very well pleased with this generator. In fact, it worked so well, I am considering having a transfer switch installed to hook directly into the generator just to keep from running drop cords throughout the house to the different items that need power.
