I just received my Nikon P7100 and took it for a test drive. I have been an film photographer for over 40 years and am one of the last to convert to digital. I wanted a camera that would give both full automatic and full manual capabilities in a budget priced package. If this is what you are looking for then the P7100 is for you. The learning curve for the many controls is short as the camera has an excellent, intuitive layout. Nikon put a lot of thought into which controls would be most used by the advanced user. For example, one dial is dedicated to exposure compensation, a very common accessory for many photographers. Physically, this little gem is well balanced and easy to control. It feels comfy in the hand. The wide ISO range allows for shooting in a variety of lighting conditions with little loss in image quality. I was surprised! If you are the type of person who likes to do a lot of post shooting image manipulation then you won't be disappointed. This camera can record in JPEG and RAW format giving you all the latitude you could desire for computer "darkroom" play. I do wish the camera would accept additional telephoto lenses as I feel limited by the 28-200 mm configuration of the lens system. While this lens appears to be excellent, I would love to reach out with a 400 mm lens. Perhaps Nikon will consider this in a future generation. Whether you are a beginner who is looking for a camera to learn all aspects of photography or a dedicated professional looking for that "pocket back up", you won't be disappointed by the Nikon P7100.

Best ergonometrics in a compact

By PBCA

from California

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

The P7100 was purchased after several epiphanies: when travelling I never have room for my DLSR any more, or even a mirror-less system for that matter; 99% of my images are never printed on paper; and as I now need reading glasses viewfinders are of lesser value. The P7100 has become my main camera replacement, taking the place of both my compact and my DSLR for almost everything. Excellent IQ but the outstanding feature is the ergonometrics; I love features like having separate controls for Aperture and Shutter and having things like Flash Compensation at hand without going to the menu. These controls are main selling feature of the camera for me. The tilt out screen is the main feature I like; I generally shoot from the waist.

This is a great camera. I have a nikon d7000 which is nikons best dx camera. I use this camera when i need a light camera. The camera is great in low light. I use a sb-400 flash with this camera a great combo. I would like to have 1080p but video is good.

Big improvement over P7000

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Major improvement over P7000. Seems faster and I appreciate the pull-out LCD to help take photos from different angles. When shooting in manual mode it's a big help to have the front dial for quickly, easily changing Aperture.

Small but with lots of control

By dmarklin

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I'm pretty pleased with this camera with the exception of the speed to record to the card [and the viewfinder]. And I have a ultra fast SanDisk. It can do bracketed shots for HDR.

Fantastic pictures and relatively easy to use

By Dimpleschick

from Island in the Caribbean

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

My review targets the casual user who wants excellent photographs without having to use manual controls. I have always used a point-and-shoot camera and have always been disappointed when I wanted to have my subject appear closer than what the lens was capable of. The P7100 has provided what I am looking for. I like that I can use the automatic controls and the zoom lens gives me the photos I have been wanting to take. The tilting monitor is very helpful for taking high and low shots . There are so many features in this camera that I am pleased with. The colors are true. The battery lasts longer than I expected before needing to be recharged. It takes videos which I haven't even tried yet. I read a lot of reviews and interviewed several cameras at my local camera shop before I decided on this one. I have made the right choice. While Nikon makes many very good point and shoot cameras, I am glad that I finally made the step up to the next level in photography. I live on an island which gives me lots of photo opportunities. I am still learning to use the features of this camera. I am sure it will take me quite some time to do it well, but I am sure having fun. The only thing that I would change is the neck strap. I don't want my camera hanging around my neck. I would prefer to have a sturdy wrist strap that could disconnect from the camera when desired. There are several available on-line, but I would like to see Nikon provide their own. Click on my photos below to see what features I used.

Best Coolpix To Date

By D Scotty

from I am a serious amateur/unpaid professional with over 40 years of 35mm experience across 6 continents. An avid Photoshop CS5 fan.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

The following P7100 pro/con comparison is based on taking over 2,000 shots and scores of videos at Disney World in Florida. I am a serious amateur/unpaid professional with over 40 years of 35mm experience, and an avid Photoshop CS5 fan. Pros: Solidly built. Fast start up. Quiet operation. Picture quality, tones, and sharpness rivals my Nikon DSLR's. Great for a beginner who wants to grow into photography without having to invest in a DSLR on Day 1. Total control, from automatic to manual. Basic Snapshot setting (green camera icon) gets it right about 85% of the time. Highly customizable buttons and features. Automatic scene settings usually superior to manual setup. Very good in low light settings. Raw + Jpg mode. 3 user defined settings to add to the built in automatic scene settings. Very fast and easy one finger button to delete unwanted shots as they happen. Video quality and sound recording rivals theatres when played back on high quality TV. Jack for external video mic. Continuous shots/Best shot option lets you get the best shot when the subject is moving Exposure bracketing with manual overrides is great when the light isn't. Very clear zoom at the digital end. HDMI output. Battery life. In camera recharge via USB/Wall charger too. Flash Hotshoe Power settings for built-in flash. Single button Macro mode and auto setting; focus is very accurate and easy to use. (Remember to turn it off to return to regular shooting!) Automatic shutter cap (works better than P7000 this replaces). Great manual. 286 pages long, so on pdf instead of printed. Quiet video zoom. Variable angle LCD is great to take pictures with the camera over your head. Viewfinder with diopter correction. Solid opening and closing doors for battery, mic, outputs. Cons: Not a true pocket camera. A bit bulky and heavy. Only comes in basic black. Not very chic. Strap is too thin for the weight and bulk. Get a wider aftermarket one. Not for the beginner. Too many controls and options, although most can be ignored. Factory settings need to be manually corrected to avoid yellow cast and mild contrast before taking first shot. The manual is quite long and can be complex for a beginner. Photo software is frustrating and not intuitive. Better to wait for deals on aftermarket programs. The few extra dollars will be worth it. Exposure comp dial is too easy to turn; does't lock in place. Uses proprietary Nikon batteries that are quite expensive.

Simply the best choice!

By mmsphoto

from Northeast Florida

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I own a few other advanced compact digital cameras, but the Nikon CoolPix P7100 is far and away the best I have ever used. Photos are stunningly sharp, colors are accurate, metering is precise and the overall experience is such a pleasure! This camera feels solid and comfortable, and the LCD monitor is excellent. The AF is quick and accurate, and best of all, my "keeper rate" is higher than ever! Do not hesitate; this is a camera you'll love!

At last a serious advanced Coolpix ...

By HMeYe

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7100 Black 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I had the P7000 for 3 weeks, and although i like the image quality and controls, I admit it had some processing tweaks, but I saw that a corrected P7000 is coming, and that's the P7100 ... Today I have the P7100 since about 90 days along the D3s and D200. With the introduction of the P7100, I can say that Nikon have for the first time a serious advanced P&S. Everything runs so smoothly in the P7100 and the image quality is excellent . I only wished that Nikon integrated a built in GPS and the 1080p video in the P7100 .... and it would be a complete cam for me ....
