Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera, Model SLTA77V

Redefining the camera. Get action photos, HD Movies and Live View shots that other cameras miss, thanks to Sony’s exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology. Enjoy 24.3 megapixel resolution—with the world’s fastest shooting— up to 12 frames per second—and the world’s first OLED electronic viewfinder.

Features:

  • 2nd Generation Translucent Mirror Design
Other DSLRs can shoot. Or they can focus with the speed and precision of Phase Detection AF. They cannot do both at once. Sony changes all that with the award-winning Translucent Mirror Technology system. It directs light to both the image sensor and the Phase Detection AF sensor simultaneously
  • 24.3 MP; best-in-class resolution
You get incredible detail and gorgeous enlargements thanks to a 24.3 megapixel sensor. It’s the highest resolution among APS-C DSLRs, as of August 2011
  • World’s fastest up to 12 fps continuous
The translucent mirror makes it far easier to capture the decisive soccer kick or your baby at her absolute cutest. Shoots up to 12 frames per second at full-resolution 24.3 megapixels with continuous auto focus (AE locked after first frame). This is the world’s fastest shooting speed for interchangeable lens APS-C cameras, as of August, 2011
  • World’s first OLED viewfinder
There’s never been anything quite like the Tru-Finder™ OLED electronic viewfinder. For size, speed and brightness even after sunset, this is a gem. It begins with 2359K dots for amazing resolution and high contrast ratio for incredible depth. OLED reduces motion blur to a bare minimum. You can also see the results of camera adjustments in real time with superb color and detail
  • HD Movies at 60p, 60i, or 24p
Capture spectacular HD Movies4. This is the world’s first DSLR to offer a choice of super-smooth 60p, standard 60i or cinematic 24p, all at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution. AVCHD™ codec delivers stunning picture quality. MP4 codec offers smaller files for easier upload to the web
  • HD movies with full manual control
Now you don’t need to surrender control when you shoot HD movies. Enjoy the full expressive potential of Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority or Manual (P/A/S/M) control in HD movie mode
  • Full-time Phase Detection AF
You get fast, accurate auto focus in every mode—even HD Movie and Live View—thanks to Sony’s exclusive Translucent Mirror Technology. While Contrast Detection Auto Focus often hunts for correct focus, Phase Detection AF knows exactly where correct focus is, and goes straight for it
  • Full-Time Live View in LCD or EVF
You can use both the LCD monitor and OLED Electronic Viewfinder for composing shots in Live View. Both provide a what-you-see-is-what-you-get preview of white balance, focus, depth of field, exposure and 100% framing accuracy, plus informative on-screen displays
  • World’s shortest release time lag
Helps ensure that the image you want is the image you get. Once auto focus occurs, release time lag is the delay between fully pressing the shutter release and when the camera actually starts taking the picture. Long lag makes it harder to capture fast-moving objects. The Sony A77 boasts the world’s shortest release time lag at only 0.05 seconds
  • Rugged, magnesium alloy body
The SLT-A77 is built for the real world with a magnesium alloy body that combines high strength with light weight. Ports, doors and controls are also weather-resistant for smooth operation under adverse conditions
  • Object Tracking AF
Locks onto a specified object and maintains focus even as the subject moves. Unpredictable subjects stay in focus even while zooming. You can concentrate on composition without worrying about focus
  • 19-point Auto Focus
To maximize the value of Translucent Mirror Technology, Sony incorporates Phase Detection AF of great sophistication. 19 sensors with 11 cross sensors maximize precision for both vertical and horizontal subjects
  • Three-way tilt/swivel LCD screen
Tilt it up or down to frame high- and low-angle shots that would otherwise be hit-or-miss. Tilt and swivel over the camera for self-portraits. You can even tilt it up and down when you hold the camera in vertical mode! Finally, the monitor folds flush to the camera with the LCD exposed for shooting or protected for travel
  • Dual control dials
Perfect for experienced shooters, dual control dials provide direct, hands-on access to two settings at a time
  • Top mounted LCD
In addition to status displays on the LCD monitor and Electronic Viewfinder, Sony offers a top-mounted LCD with exposure information
  • 6-image layering
Leverages the fast BIONZ® processor to capture six images in a fraction of a second, and then combine the data. The result is one incredible single image that gets a cleaner result in Multi-Frame NR mode or sharper nighttime pictures in Hand-held Twilight mode
  • Multi-frame NR
Experience incredible low-light shooting without a flash. The camera captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six, it creates a single image with a reduction in noise equivalent to two additional steps of ISO sensitivity. Sensitivity selectable up to ISO 16000. (Recommended for still subjects.)
  • Handheld Twilight mode
Get gorgeous shots at night without a tripod. Combines six frames into a single image for smooth, low-noise evening shots. (Recommended for still subjects.)
  • Auto HDR built into camera
Captures more scene dynamic range than a single exposure can handle—and more range than photo film. Combines the best highlight detail from one shot, the best mid-tones from a second and the best shadow detail from a third for one incredible shot. (Recommended for still subjects.)
  • 3D Sweep Panorama™ Mode
Capture vast scenic vistas and 16:9 shots in spectacular 3D. As you sweep across the panorama, the camera records separate right-eye and left-eye images that make landscapes come alive on your 3D television1. Records both JPEG and MPO file formats
  • Sweep Panorama™ Mode
Capture expansive landscapes automatically. Press the shutter, sweep vertically or horizontally. The camera does the rest, continuously shooting images and stitching them together
  • Built-in GPS
An integrated GPS receiver records the location and time of every shot you take and lets you view your images on a map with compatible computer and Internet applications, so you can remember where you took your favorite shots
  • Shot Result Preview
See the results before you take the shot. This preview takes the guesswork out of camera settings by showing the effects of the aperture, shutter and DRO settings on the depth of field, motion and dynamic range
  • 921K dot TruBlack™ LCD screen
Sony's 3.0-inch Xtra Fine LCD™ monitor has 921K dots for superb resolution. The TruBlack™ screen includes a special resin layer to suppress internal reflections, increasing contrast compared to conventional LCDs. Sunny Weather mode boosts visibility even further
  • Main Sensor Quick AF Live View
Combines the fast focus of Phase Detection AF with high quality Live View images right from the main sensor. This is made possible by Sony® Translucent Mirror Technology. You get accurate images and 100% framing on the LCD monitor or eye-level viewfinder
  • ISO 16000 sensitivity
Incredibly clear low-light pictures without sacrificing detail, made possible by the low-noise Exmor™ APS HD CMOS image sensor and refined BIONZ® image processor
  • AUTO+ (Advanced Auto) mode
Get cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. Unifies and simplifies Sony intelligent technologies. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode
  • Graphic Display
Clarifies the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, as well as the effect each has on photographic results
  • Upgraded BIONZ® image processor
The brain of the camera is a Sony’s BIONZ® image processor substantially upgraded for the demands of 24.3 megapixel photography. Chroma noise reduction delivers high-resolution, low-noise photos even at ISO 16000. Also enables fast processing for up to 12 fps continuous shooting of data-intensive 24.3 MP images, 2D/3D Sweep Panorama™ modes and 6-image layering
  • Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO)
Improves results with backlit subjects and recovers details hidden in shadows. Settings include Auto, Level with a choice of five operating levels and Off
  • 1200-Zone exposure metering
Reads exposure directly from the main image sensor. Choice of Multi, Center and Spot metering accommodates a full range of shooting situations
  • SteadyShot INSIDE™ stabilization
Image stabilization reduces blur by compensating for camera shake. Typical DSLR systems build image stabilization into selected lenses only. SteadyShot INSIDE™ image stabilization is built into the camera body itself. You'll reduce blur with every A Mount lens, including macro and wide-aperture standard zoom lenses
  • HDMI® output for HD viewing
Enjoy HD movies and stunning still images on a compatible HDTV. The camera includes an HDMI® output. In addition, the BRAVIA® Sync system works with compatible Sony® BRAVIA HDTVs enabling you to control camera playback using the television's remote
  • Up to 530 Shots of battery life
Take up to 530 shots on a single charge with Sony® Stamina™ battery power. Sony's InfoLITHIUM® battery system enables you to see the percent of power remaining, so you can keep shooting in confidence
  • P/A/S/M exposure modes
The camera offers a full range of controls from the beginner's AUTO+ mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control
  • Advanced Anti-Dust Technology
Anti-Dust Technology helps keep the CMOS sensor clean, resulting in consistently clear pictures. First a static-free coating on the sensor's low-pass filter helps repel dust. Then vibration automatically dislodges dust from the sensor
  • Built-in Flash (GN12)
To help you shoot more effectively, the camera includes a built-in flash (Guide Number 12) that can also trigger a wireless accessory flash (sold separately). The integrated hot shoe enables you to expand your lighting options with a range of accessory flashes (sold separately)
  • Slot for two media types
For cost-effective, convenient storage and sharing of your images, the camera accepts Memory Stick PRO Duo™/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo™ and SD/SDHC/SDXC media (Class 4 or higher recommended, sold separately)
  • APS-C size HD CMOS image sensor
With 19.5 times the area of the typical camcorder image sensor, APS-C makes the difference between amateur and professional-looking video, delivering an exceptional combination of high resolution, high sensitivity and gorgeous, blurred backgrounds
  • Sony® Exmor™ technology
Conventional image sensors use only a handful of analog-to-digital (A/D) converters, which can slow you down. The Exmor™ sensor provides more than 5,600 column-parallel A/D converters. This helps enable continuous shooting at up to 12 frames per second
  • 11 Picture Effect modes
Discover innovative ways to make your images and videos pop. These include Posterization (Color, B/W), Pop Color, Retro Photo, Partial Color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow), Soft High-key, High Contrast Monochrome, Toy Camera, Soft Focus, HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, and Miniature
  • Face Detection and Registration
The camera can automatically detect up to eight individual faces and adjust focus, exposure, white balance and flash to help deliver crisp, properly lit images of people. Can prioritize children or adults. Face Registration can remember friends and family members and prioritize them
  • Smile Shutter™ technology
Captures a smile the moment it happens. Simply select the Smile Shutter™ mode and the camera takes the picture automatically. You can prioritize children or adults and adjust the smile sensitivity

GPS on the A77 leaves room for improvement

By phantomphixer85

from Marysville, WA

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

This is my second A77. I took the first one back because the GPS constantly was off by 3/4 a mile. Yep you guessed it, the second camera has the same problem. The manual says the GPS should be accurate within 98 feet. The two cameras I have used both were off by 3/4 a mile. Other than the GPS problem. The camera is GREAT ..... so far, but I have only had it two days now.

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

This was an upgrade from an a33, which treated me well for a long time but I was beginning to outgrow it. Coming from the a33, however, I was used to the whole translucent mirror thing, which is definitely a hurdle for standard mirror users because exposing properly takes a little extra thought. The a77 has a much better feel than its smaller counterparts with its bigger body. The build quality feels solid and the weather-sealed controls make taking this thing out into the elements a little less frightening. The images it produces are gorgeous, however. The 24 megapixel sensor allows room for cropping or blowing up the images. My only real gripe about the camera is that due to the translucent mirror, there is a measure of light loss, which makes low-light shooting rather difficult if you're like me and hate bumping the ISO above 800. Overall, great camera and I'd buy it again if I were given the chance to do it all over!

All I can say is WOW!

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

After using a friends Canon and reading review after review of every camera I could afford, I was in a conundrum. I was very worried about buying another Sony after not being very please with my W370 after loving my W300. It lacked versatility. As I waited to see this in a store, I purchased a HX100 and an HX9. They were stunning to use and so very versatile. Basically they sold me on the A77 along with it's amazing features. I opted for the A77 over the A65, because I have wide hands and wanted a comfortable, tough body. The magnesium frame adds some good confidence on being tough, not that I'm rough. But you never know. Its very comfortable to hold and handle. I knew it would be before I even received it. I've spent the past week learning all of it's capabilities, but I found that a morning at the park snapping a variety of subjects has given me a much better understanding of what I'm in store for in the many years I hope to use it. The water fowl was just a short experiment with the 12fps as the bird took off from the lake. I'm sure as I experiment more, my smile will only widen. I could go on, but it's all been said before. It will definitely impress you. It sure did my hard core "Canon Only" friend this last Sunday. I think his plans for the new Canon 1DX is out the window.

WINNING!

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I made the switch from Canon to Sony about five years ago with the release of the Sony a350. Wanting to move to a more feature rich DSLR I did extensive research and liked what I saw regarding Sony and the direction they were going. After acquiring Konica Minolta’s photography technology, it didn’t take long for Sony to start making an impact. They seemed to be on the cutting edge of research and DSLR technology (Sony released the 1st really useful Live View technology). My research was confirmed when I went to a well know photography chain to look at the newest Canon and the salesperson directed me toward the Sony line. After doing a side-by- side comparison of features and image quality, I made the jump to Sony and have not regretted it one little bit! I finally got lucky and caught the a77 in stock at a very popular NY photo supply store and had it in my hands in TX just three days after I placed the order! I have been shooting with it for a couple of weeks. There was a slight learning curve as the a77 is quite an upgrade from my a350. Simply put, this is the best camera I have ever used. It was nice that it came with the newest firmware already installed (1.04). After reading some reviews I was a little concerned about the EVF but am truly amazed at Sony’s implementation of the new technology. It is bright (even in sunlight), big and extremely helpful at obtaining the correct exposure (WYSIWYG) and I don’t have to take my glasses off to use the viewfinder. Another really nice feature that I discovered, while attending a wedding, is the sheer quietness of this camera. Two photographers were shooting the wedding (One with a Canon, the other with a Nikon) and it sounded like the paparazzi. The shutter noise of the pros cameras was distracting while my a77 was extremely quiet. Another cool feature is the “Peaking Level menu option that is extremely useful while manually focusing the camera (for macro shots, etc.). When you obtain focus the EVF or the back LCD draws color lines (red, white or yellow options) around the object you are shooting to verify focus. Really cool and useful. If I have to find something to complain about regarding the a77 I have a few points. One, the battery life could be longer. It uses the same battery as my A350 (so I have some extras) but it would be nice if Sony would develop a longer lasting battery. For some reason the GPS feature seems to suck battery life. Two, there is no “Steady Shot button on the camera body. To use the camera on a tripod I have to go through the menu system to turn off “Steady Shot. Not a huge deal but a button/switch would have been nice. That’s it, no other negatives from my perspective. There has been a lot of chatter about the noise in high ISO ranges from this camera but I have not found it to be an issue in real world use. All cameras are going to be “noisy in ISO 1600 and up. This camera has so many useful features as well as many fun options; it’s just not practical to discuss them in a short review. Just a note of caution. . . if you are trying to make a decision about which camera to buy, keep in mind that not all reviews on the Sony DSLR/SLT cameras are unbiased. As I was researching I found that many pro reviewers (photographers, tech. geeks, etc.) were heavily biased toward the equipment they use. There are also many unbiased reviews that point out the short comings of each of the camera models. I recommend that you go to a photo store and see them for yourself and do your own side-by-side comparison. If you have lens from Canon or Nikon it may not make since to switch. But, Sony is on the cutting edge and the future looks bright for their technology. I know I'm going to be very happy with my a77 and look forward to what is next.

Learning Curve

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

Just got this camera; so far so good...so lucky before Track and Field Season. [Note] Use tripod for no flash shots...no margin for error. Takes multiple shots for no light situations. This is not a beginner camera; and don't expect to use AUTO and take great pictures. This is Pro Level and way beyond my A700 replacement. Do your checks before shooting and learn all the settings please. Will do another report after a month of usage. Hope you enjoy the TV shot picture on my Plasma TV. Yes, its an actual shot too... my TV is that good; but so is the A77 a JPEG shot. Using a Tameron 28-300mm XD Di LD...so hope this puts some light on things. Video AF tracks well too...even on my TV..was tracking the closet image. Well done !! SONY...Video is Pro Level... No Hype...

Very impressive

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I've not had this camera for very long (< one month), so I'm still finding ways to use all of its' myriad functions, but having used the Î+/-700 since it came out, I was quickly able to get some photos that I was happy with. I generally shoot RAW and will continue to, but I'm finding that the extra fine jpg's are pretty good and have enough information that (with a good exposure) they can still be fine tuned. I have a converted Minolta Rokkor lens that must be manually focused and using the manual magnifying feature makes keepers something I can depend on. The AF on this camera nails it under almost all lighting conditions - and quickly! I'm certain that continued use will give me an even greater appreciation of this fine camera. I love my Î+/-700, but this camera is in another league.

My 3rd Sony camera in less than two years

By ExpdHobbyPhotographer

from Washington DC Area

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I have been a photo hobbyist since 1954. I began using digital cameras in 1999. After more than ten years of Olympus use, I made my first Sony camera purchase in June 2010, an alpha 380, after months of diligent comparisons of features and prices among all the various manufacturers of digital SLRs. The alpha 380 came out the hands-down winner. Then, the SLTs came out. Owning my 380 for only five months, in November 2010, I purchased the alpha SLT 55. Vastly greater performance. My main motivations for this move were 1) were 1) the translucent mirror and 2) the GPS receiver built in. Not a thing wrong with this camera, but when the SLT77 came out, I did another comparison to see what the 77 offered that was not on the 55 to justify the substantial price increase. The features that mostly influenced my decision were 1) the improved bracketing since I do almost all my (outdoor) shooting that way and make substantial use of HDR software on my computer and 2) the greater flexibility of the LCD screen. One surprising nice feature of the A77 is that it shows GPS coordinates on screen. I had no trouble selling my A380. I believe I shall have no trouble selling my A55. Sony cameras, at every level, remain the best value of features for the money available today. Btw...I was disappointed that while Sony told me the a77 was out of stock, I was able to purchase it overnight from a dealer.

THE BEST FOR ALL AROUND USE.

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I REALLY FEEL LUCK TO BE ABLE TO GET MY A77. IF YOU CAN SET A DIGITAL WATCH YOU CAN SET THIS CAMERA UP WITH VERY LITTLE PROBLEMS. THE OWNERS MANUAL IS VERY GOOD IN POINTING OUT HOW TO SET THE REST OF THE CONTROLS THAT YOU WILL NEED. DON'T WORRY THE TOLL FREE NUMBER AT SONY WILL HELP YOU WITH ANY PROBLEM. I DON'T THINK YOU WILL NEED THEM MUCH AT ALL. OH YES I AM USING A PANASONIC GOLD 16 GB CLASS1 CARD , WRIGHT SPEED AT 90. IT HELPS BECAUSE THIS IS A VERY FAST CAMERA AND YOU WILL LOVE TO USE THE SPEED. I LOVE MINE AND I AM SURE YOU WILL TOO. NOW MY WIFE WANTS ONE . YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT ALL THE NEAT THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH THIS CAMERA. THIS WILL TAKE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

Very Impressive!

Comments about Sony A77 Black Digital SLR Camera:

I have shot with an a700 for almost 5 years and was very skeptical when the a77 was announced in August as it’s replacement. My skepticism was based on 3 things: 1) the image quality of 24mps on a “C sensor (lots of mps on a small sensor); 2) the quality of the OLED viewfinder; 3) the buffers ability to keep up with the speed of the camera in RAW and 12fps. Well, my concerns were put to rest when I tested the camera and saw the results. 1) With the high quality Sony and Tamron lenses I use, the 24mps makes the images extremely sharp and crisp without any noticeable edge distortion. WOW! Just amazing quality. 2) The OLED does take some getting use to and can become very pixelated in low light, but the advantages of what it can do when setting the proper exposure, shutter speed etc so that “what you see in the OLED viewfinder is exactly what you get on the card has changed the way I shoot for the better. 3) The buffer speed when shooting in RAW or in the 12fps mode is not an issue WHEN YOU use a SD 92mb/s card. Slower cards work but you sacrifice buffer performance in RAW and at 12fps. Turn off the image preview. Image preview really overworks the buffer especially at 12fps. As you get use to using the OLED, you will find you won’t need to be constantly previewing the images you just took because “what you see in the OLED is what you get. Now for the fun stuff the camera can do: 1) in camera panorama mode; 2) digital 1.4 and 2.x zoom; 3) what I call Super Auto mode for the times when you are just shooting snap shots of family, things etc.; 4) and my favorite is the “Picture Mode- with HDR Paint mode, b/w monotone, b/w spot color, soft focus, toy camera, etc. To give you a better idea of the image quality and let you judge for yourself if this is the right camera for you here are a couple of images taken in jpeg without any photoshop corrections or enfacements.
