Only good for a few things

Pros

  • Easy To Configure
  • Quiet

Cons

  • Heavy

Best Uses

  • Less wiring

Comments about Sony VAIO S Series Docking Station:

This dock is great when
- you frequently have the same USB 2.0 or older disks attached in one location only.
- you do not mind working with the display up and no external display. Or only need one external display up when working. You can blank out any display not used.

The dock is not useful when
- you need more than 1 USB 3.0 device connected, as there are no USB 3.0 sockets on the dock.
- you want the headphone socket on the laptop to be left open so you *can* eject a disc without removing the jack first. The dock no headphone socket.
- you do not want to open the lid to power on the laptop as the dock features no power button.
- you want more than one display to work on as most any display you would think to add will look awkward next behind the display of the laptop. The dock cannot show image on both outputs - in Windows operating system it merely allows for both sockets to be permanently connected to displays. On the laptop the displayport and VGA sockets are spaced so close you can only have one connected at any time.

Just what I needed.

By JohnyB

Comments about Sony VAIO S Series Docking Station:

Don't know why so many people fuss about things the dock does not do, when you are able to research them beforehand. One thing that I would have liked is if it had a firewire port, it does not, I checked, but I did not care anyways. As for how many screens it can plug in, I checked all the specs and contacted sony before purchasing. I did not care for dual screens as I have it plugged via hdmi to my bravia. It makes my vpcsa with I7 and 8gigs of ram an entertainment center, a laptop on the go, 13.3 is so portable, and a decent gaming pc, all on the bravia with full HD resolution. Why go back to VGA? I did check in case I wanted to plug in a projector and now then I knew not to expect it. I also looked at the base to see what ports it would block, and yes it blocks your VGA port. I also don't find it difficult to put in. I read some comments that it took some getting used to, bullocks to that. You have a side rail and a back notches to direct you. I actually like it better than my Ideapad dock, which has a whole back portion and a huge eject button (although it does have a nice power button that this one lacks). It is invisible on my entertainment center. For those that have trouble, jam it, gently, onto the back notches and then set it down with a hinge like motion while set all the way to the rightmost guide-rail. The only drawback I have on it, but it is more on the side of pride I believe from Sony, it does not have a port on the laptop like on my ideapad from Lenovo. Lenovo does not have a plastic insert that protects the port under the laptop. It has a nifty mechanism that as I plug it into the port, it pushes in the protection portions of the I/O port and when I pull it out, it closes up again. One of the first things I read on the sony dock was to put the protector back on once taken off the port. Kinda annoying to have to keep that thing around, so I won't. My laptop will go from dock to case to a table elsewhere, o it's not like it will have a high chance to get dust into it. I love it so far and I do wish all port manufacturers made channels in the base to allow more airflow, ie double as a cooling pad or vent.

Pathetic Docking Station

By JayS

from Troy, Mich

Comments about Sony VAIO S Series Docking Station:

SONY makes great core products -- Great Laptops, Cameras, etc -- but when it comes to AC adapters and Docking Stations the Product Mangers and Developers need to be sent back to school. I bought this VPCSA390X with 512 SSD, 8GB and i7-2640 super powered laptop for office and high end software development. I was tired of having a desktop and a laptop. The machine performs even better than my desktop. I saw the picture of the DOCK with 2 Video outputs - VGA and HDMI and thougth that like most docks I can have 2 good size monitors and be done with this. I actually bought 2 docking stations one for home and other for the office... What a DISAPPOINTMENT.

not that useful

By hubedo

Comments about Sony VAIO S Series Docking Station:

way too much for the money considering the limited connections. Plus, Sony does not make the docking stations work with upgrades of the models. That would seem like an easy way to ensure customer loyalty to a series if they didn't have to purchase a new docking station each time. Sony, please, make a better docking station and I will happily continue to shell out $200+ for it. In the meantime, I am ditching this at work and buying a universal docking station for home.

    A great idea completly materialized.

    By FirstTimeSonyBuyer

    Pros

    • Set down and go.

    Cons

    • Like trying to put toast in a toaster with the lights off.

Comments about Sony VAIO S Series Docking Station:

Let me say right away this product is great! It is very useful to never have to plug in all your extras each time you get home from a day on the go. Just set your laptop on the dock and it instantly hooks right up to your hdmi, vga, AC adapter, and four USB ports. There are a few areas of improvement including a headphone jack in the dock for a home speaker system would be great. Another improvement would be an easier way to place the computer down without having to guess if the dock adapter lands into the laptop. It seems sometimes im just dragging the laptop around until I hear a click. With time your ability to line it up will improve so it ends up not being a big deal. The final feature to meantion is the ability to just pop it on with the extended sheet battery and charge both batteries, would have been a bust had they not added this feature. However they did and that is why this docking station is worth every penny.

For 200 bux you get 1 VGA out and 1 HDMI out for a computer that can sport 1 GB of vram?! Come on!! Give me some options for this thing! What about display port, or god forbid DVI?! how about 3 outs so we can take advantage of eyefinity. I expect a lot more for 200 bux sony, shame on u!
