We bought this cooktop about a year ago and writing this review in 2015. We read most of the reviews before we purchased the cooktop and was a bit skeptical, especially about the concerns over the "plastic knobs and stems", the grate height and taking a long time to boil water and subsequent escape of heat, and finally paint/writing coming off when cleaned. First, we absolutely love this cooktop. For a 30 inch cooktop it has a lot of surface for pots/pans. Keep in mind that it is a 30 inch surface that GE has maximized; not all pots/pans will fit at once. The lock/unlock feature is one of the reasons we bought it as we have little children who can be curous. When locked, their is a light that illuminates and if someone tries to turn on a burner there is a buzzer sound that activates and can easily heard throughout the house. The up front controls is another reason we purchased this cooktop as most offer them in the middle or on the right or left side. The control placement on this cooktop let you control the heat with having to reach a across or near the heated grates. We have not encourted any issues with knobs or stem and we have had this cooktop for about a year. The knobs snuggly fit the stem but with constant pressure straight up we are able to remove them for cleaning. The cooktop is easily cleaned and cleans up well! I was very careful to read the entire owner's manual to ensure I maintained this cooktop properly. I did not want to scratch or ruin the surface by using an abrasive cleaner or an improper pad/rag/brush. We typically do not have any problems with cleaning the cooktop with using just a damp cloth. For tougher messes we use a damp cloth with dish soap. The only issue we have with cooktop is does take a bit longer to boil water when using a burner other than the center burner. The center burner will boil water quickly! The solution to boil water on another burner is to first get the water boiling using the center burner and when the water starts to form bubbles, turn on an outside burner and put the pot over it. The one thing we will do is remove the cabinet that over the cooktop. With the cooktop having commercial style grates, the cabinet over the cooktop looks like it is trying to suffocate it! It will look much nicer once the cabinet is removed and a hood is installed. I hope this review helps out!

I bought this cooktop about a month ago and was excited to give it a go! First, let me say, I love the look of the cooktop (except the height of the grates) and I love the fact that it's a five burner. I wanted the controls in the front and I really liked how GE (and other manufacturers make it, too) placed the front two burners, using as much of the footprint as possible, instead of a straight front surface, which would use less cooking surface area. This design allows for more grill coverage. Now, will I end up using all five burners in any given time? I hope so and I hope it's not "big pots" that they won't all fit over the burners. As my handyman was installing, we noticed the opening was a bit bigger than I would have liked because there was 5/8" gap in the depth and 1/2" gap in the width area. I had an electric glass cooktop (did love the cleaning aspect of it) that had a straight corner cut out on my granite when granite was installed 9 years ago. This cooktop has a "rounded" corners so in order to cover the straight 90 degree angles on either sides of the cutout, we had to pull the cooktop all the way to the front, leaving 5/8" gap in the very back, allowing food/oil, etc. to fall onto the top of my oven (which is just below it, also GE model PT925SNSS) and even with that, it BARELY covered the corners of the cutout! Now, I'm needing to have some sort of a long piece of "something" to cover the gap in the back that this cooktop doesn't cover, ugh! However, that's not my biggest problem. Now that I have had first hand experience with using this cooktop, as with other reviews, I have to complain about the height of the grates. why are the grates positioned so high up above the flames??? The heat really does seem to escape because your pot/pan is positioned higher than the other gas cooktops I've seen and used. Also, if you don't have a large enough pot/pan covering the burner, you're sure to have very hot handles because the heat from the flames will escape out of the sides of the burners and heat the handles up so that you can't touch them without using some potholders. I already had low clearance when I cooked in my flat glass cooktop because my over the range microwave sat further down from the cupboard than it should have, by code, so now, my clearance is lost by about another 2.5 inches. I decided to go with this model, despite the loss of clearance because I know we'll replace the cabinets in the future. And I intend to raise those stupidly low cupboard above the cooktop by six inches or just have a range hood above it. I use a lot of very small pots and the only burner that's small enough to use efficiently is the middle (the triple flame burner) and use the middle smallest burner. Is that crazy or what?!?!?! If I want to use the smallest burner and a triple flame burner, I obviously can't. The other two "smaller" burners are still not small enough to use with my small pots. The reviews about "taking longer to boil" is really true. I was skeptical when I read reviews about how slow it boiled but you know what, it's really true. I was surprised at how slow it did boil. My guess is it's because part of the heat is lost due to the height of the grates. After having used it only a couple of weeks I'm finding the position of the two smaller and two larger burner positioning to be weird. Why didn't GE place one smaller burner in the opposite side of the other smaller burner so we can use one smaller and one larger, instead of both in the front or both in the back? That, honestly, didn't make any sense to me. Also, the knob that controls the griddle controls both burners at the same time so you can't adjust one burner at a time. GE, did you think about the fact that we, as consumers, might want to have one burner to use as a "warmer" plate and the other burner as the "cooking" plate??? Obviously not!!! Lastly, and this, frankly, is astounding to me. Why did you not make the control knobs removable????????????? Has your QM department not tested this model before it was sent to manufacturing? Hasn't anyone at GE ever cleaned gas cooktop knobs??? Do you know how much more convenient it is to clean your cooktop when your knobs are removable? And why are the knobs not metal? They are cheap hard plastic material that's made to look like metal finish. I hope they don't break on my like some of the reviews mentioned. That's all I have to say. If GE is reading my review, I would be very interested in speaking to someone to discuss these concerns so you can implement them in your next model. Thank you!

Takes forever to boil and burners too close togeth
from Charleston, SC, United States
We just built our house and we upgraded to this Cafe model. We are super disappointed with it! It takes at least 20-30 minutes to get the water to boil and you can only cook using one side at a time because the burners are way too close together on the 30". Trying to convince builder to replace with something better
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Great looking, easy to install and excellent control. Love the "Power Boiler" is able to have super-heat AND simmer control via the two ring burner design. Only negative remarks are: The Lodge skillet plate doesn't heat as hot as I had hoped but quite usable and the profile is a little more bulky i.e. high off the counter plane, than anticipated A great quality for the price
NICE UPGRADE FROM MY OLD 4 BURNER.

UPGRADED FROM 4 BURNER TO 5 WITH ADDED GRIDDLE IN THE SAME AMOUNT OF SPACE. BURNERS LIFT RIGHT OFF FOR EASY CLEAN UP OF SPILLS . INSTANT ON WITH BLUE LIGHTS ON KNOBS REMINDING YOU THE BURNER IS LIT. CONTINOUS GRATES ALLOW YOU TO SLIDE HEAVY POTS ACCROSS ENTIRE COOKTOP WITHOUT LIFTING.MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT I DID NOT PURCHASE THIS COOKTOP YEARS SOONER.
Service and delivery comments:
AS ALWAYS, THE ABT DELIVERY AND INSTALLATION CREW WAS PROMPT, COURTEOUS AND EXPERIENCED AND CLEANED UP BEFORE LEAVING. IN THE LAST 35 YEARS I CAN'T REMEMBER USING ANYONE ELSE BUT ABT FOR MY APPLIANCES.

I am happy with the performance, however the burners seem so close together that sometimes its difficult to have two pots or pans cooking next to each other.
Overall great grill!

We bought this grill because of the child lock! We love everything about it except the side grills take forever to boil so you can only cook small side dishes on the side grills, still a very functional grill though!
Love the GE Cafe Series

My GE appliance was a gift and I really enjoy. I am sure the more I use the cooktop the more I will love all features. I am so excited about the grill and the burner for the larger utensil for soup pot etc. Also love the idea you can lock the cook knobs so they cannot be turned on while cleaning the area or by a child.

Bought this cooktop as part of a full set of GE Cafe appliances. So far we are very pleased. It's robust enough to handle a lot of cooking. Reasonably easy to keep clean and most of all, provides pleanty of heat. We especially like the center burner. It is a dual ring that provides lists of heat for boiling water yet turns down to a low simmer when needed.
