If you want the bottom line: Buy this fridge! It's beautifully engineered, fits in a small space, is quiet, energy efficient, and surprisingly spacious! We've owned this fridge for a month now and felt this was enough time/usage for a genuine review. The last week of 2011 our 17 year old side-by-side refrigerator just ran out of gas. Let's just say my wife and I were NOT in the market for a new fridge. So I reluctantly scrambled to look online to educate myself on prices, features, etc. The only features my wife and I decided were top priorities were 1- a bottom drawer freezer and 2- no external water/ice. We also wanted as little "high tech" stuff as possible as we've heard/read many stories of technology breaking easily and being very expensive to repair/replace. We were also constrained to a relatively small width due to existing counter top space. We began our search at Lowe's on a Saturday morning. By narrowing our choices to the bottom drawer freezer, this narrowed our selection to essentially about 4 refrigerators. One last minute decision was French Doors vs. Single Door on top. The French Doors look beautiful; however, we personally found the NOISE every time you open and close the door -because of the necessary middle pivoting hinge - was simply too much for us.This essentially got us to this Whirlpool model. The first thing we loved was the MODULAR SPLIT SHELVES in the top fridge area. I can testify that this is a GAME CHANGER. The ability to customize the split shelves is a fantastic design. Yet if you need to keep a sheet cake or large casserole in the fridge, you can quickly level both sides and have the space you need.Having the gallon jug of milk kept in the door and not gobbling up shelf space is also a super design. The top door closes VERY tightly - I guess this is part of the energy efficiency. If you simply "pull" on the handle, it will literally pull the entire unit toward you - on wheels. Instead, I've found that a simple "tug" on the door handle will break the seal and open the door. No big deal but worth mentioning. The freezer is very spacious and has a smaller top half sliding drawer to keep things organized. Ice maker/tub inside on the top left. What more do we need?Every fridge will have some noise when it's running. This one is relatively quiet. You'll hear the fan running from time to time but that's about it. Noise is no issue here. One final comment about energy efficiency. A while back I bought a little gadge called a "Kill-A-Watt" that measures how much energy an appliance uses. My old fridge was costing me about $175/year to run. Ouch. This fridge is rated to cost me about $45/year. That's over $10 A MONTH in genuine savings! After a month, we're still blown away by how spacious this fridge is! Never a side-by-side again. Our is black and the exterior cleans easily. If you're looking for a beautiful, functional, bottom drawer freezer with no extras to break on you, this is your fridge! Thanks Whirlpool for a well designed refrigerator.

My family has always purchased Whirlpool products due to their quality and dependability but our last purchase was very disappointing. Disappointing due to the noise that this refrigator makes plus not being able to keep the front of the door looking clean. I went to the website to listen to the noise levels before purchasing and nothing was on this site warned me about the freon making such a noise, the best way for me to discribe the noise is a clucking chicken. I was told it only last for a few seconds but it is unpleasant to hear this noise throughout the day and night, needless to say when company is over it is very embarrsing. I love the style and the space that is refrigator has but would not recommend due to the noise that occurs when the freon is leveling out plus not being able to keep the door looking clean.

Comments about Whirlpool GB2FHDXWS Bottom Freezer Refrigerator In Stainless Steel:
Water for the ice maker leaks to the bottom of the freezer. The temperature isn't consistent. Won't buy whirlpool products again. Also have a microwave which stays on when you open the door. The fan doesn't turn off so I have to unplug it. And also won't turn on with the door closed. Both under 2 years old. No wonder it's discontinued.

I bought this because it was on sale, great choice. I love the bottom freezer and so much room in the fridge.

Waste of Money - Needs to be constantly manually defrosted
from Bucks County, PA
I started out liking this fridge even though the freezer does not hold as much food as it should because of the small baskets. However, one week after it went out of warranty, the fun started with the frost build-up in the freezer with very little cold air making it into the refrigerator. 60 degrees is not good for a refrigerator. I'm tired of practically crawling into the freezer with a hair dryer to try to unfreeze the coils and the duct for the cold air to go into the top part of the refrigerator. Extremely poor design, and I'm getting rid of it as soon as I can because I've had it. I will never buy another Whirlpool product after this debacle. I called a Whirlpool repairman who was nice enough to tell me that there was no "fix" for this besides manually defrosting it, and since I'm currently a caregiver to someone who is recovering from major spinal surgery, I don't have the time. Stay away from this model or any other Whirlpool that forces air from the freezer up into the refrigerator.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Died at 2 years old!
By Crying Over Spilled Milk
from Blacksburg, VA
We bought this refrigerator a little over 2 years ago, and it died suddenly over the weekend. 1000 oz of irreplaceable frozen breast milk gone! We were happy with this refrigerator before its sudden death. We are still trying to figure out what happened. If we figure it out, I will update this review. Since it is outside the 1-year warranty, any repairs are on us. Very disappointing for a 2-year-old appliance.
Great fridge and features - but it LEAKS!
By Ottawa Fridge Owner

Our entire 101 unit condo was equipped with this fridge and over 70% of us are now experiencing the dreaded leaking of the unit. I now will be incurring thousands of dollars in hardwood repair as the fridge has leaked and damaged our hardwood. Otherwise - the fridge has worked fine.
Warm fridge + frozen coils = junk

This fridge has been a problem since it was about 3 or 4 years old. The frequency of manual defrosting has slowly increased over the years and now the fridge only stays cold a few days before it needs defrosted. Modern refrigerators should not need to be manually defrosted! Especially when they are only a few years old. It seems like there may be a flaw in quality or design as i am reading that a lot of consumers have had similar problems. If you do an internet search for problems on this model, you will find results for warm fridge, cold freezer. Should have paid extra for a GE. Beware of Whirlpool. Model # GB2SHDXTS01 S/N: KW0901319

It's a lemon
from Portland, OR
Thirteen months after I bought this model, 1 month after the warranty lapsed, the Adaptive Defrost Control ("Jazz") board failed. Without it, the auto defrost wouldn't work, ice built up over the evaporator coils, and air couldn't flow into the fridge. It cost $360 to fix. A year or so later, the freezer started leaking once or twice a month after the defrost cycle completed. Found out that it was because of a defective drain trap. Whirlpool was aware of the issue; a bulletin for repair techs announced that Whirlpool would provide a replacement part and, for a year, cover the labor costs. This news wasn't shared with customers that registered their fridges. By the time I found out about the offer, Whirlpool no longer covered labor costs. So I had to disassemble the back of my fridge and do it myself. This year, the auto defrost is again not working. Two repair shops said it was probably caused by the failure of one of three parts, individually or together, and the repairs could cost between $250 and $900. It's just more cost effective to buy a new fridge. When this fridge worked, it worked fine. But between the auto defrost breaking down twice in five years, the defective drain trap, and Whirlpool's failure to notify customers about the drain trap, I can't rely on this fridge anymore and won't buy Whirlpool products in the future. A fridge should last for more than 5 years. I'm telling my friends, family, and coworkers about this and advising them against buying Whirlpool products.

I've had the refrigerator for 2 years..It's built well and has lots of room..If I had to get another refrigerator the only thing I would want different would be the freezer up top...Every time you want ice you have to bend over and open the freezer..That can get annoying because its a pretty big door and can get heavy depending what ya have in the freezer...

Leaked water from bottom freezer starting from first year. Just ordered free replacement part from Whirlpool. This has been a problem and I think owners should get part installed for free.
Absolute Trash After 3.5 Years

Glad to know that Whirlpool doesn't make quality products anymore. Compressor is dead and all the food is now in the trash. Seems like this is a systematic problem with all the recent reviews of this product. Lovely thing to discover when you're in your third trimester and just want some dang ice cream...
