Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier, Model AP250

What makes Whispure so effective?
You're about to find out. The links on the right will let you learn all about Whispure. You'll get the inside story on the revolutionary Filtrete™ True HEPA Filter from 3M, and discover just how quiet Whispure really is. You can also see all three speeds, check the filters, and learn how Whispure works behind the scenes in your home.

Here's the nasty stuff that Whispure inhales for you.
Whispure uses an exclusive 3M Filtrete™ True HEPA Filter to capture 99.97% of of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns from air passing through the filter. Exactly how small is that? 1,100,000,000 would fit in an area smaller than one square inch.

Sound advice: Whispure keps it quiet.
Whipsure filters more air with less sound. But hearing is believing, so click on the air purifier sound comparison at the right, then check out the chart below. You'll discover that Whirlpool's advanced airflow design and the exclusive True HEPA Filtrete™ Technology from 3M make Whispure the quietest high efficiency air purifier, guaranteed.

The inside story on Whispure:

  • Whispure has the power to inhale microscopic airborne particles like dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke.
  • Once air is inside Whispure, the 3M Charcoal Pre-Filter pre-cleans it, to reduce odors and filter out large particles.
  • Next, the exclusive Filtrete™ True HEPA Filter from 3M captures 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns from passing air through the filter.
  • Finally, Whispure circulates filtered air back into your home. And it filters a roomful of air in just 10 minutes, which maintains the recommended 6 Air Changes per Hour (ACH).

You're in complete control.
Whispure has three fan speeds to fit your needs. You simply turn it on, adjust the speed, and Whispure does the rest. It's that easy to clear the air.

A change for the better.
The two-stage filter system inside Whispure keeps going strong for a long time. But how do you know when it's time to change filters? Just glance at the indicator lights. You can even register on-line to have replacement filters sent directly to your home, precisely when you need them. Keeping your home's air clear simply doesn't get any easier.

Which one uses the most energy?
The Whispure™ Air Purifier swallows plenty of dust, pollen and smoke, but it never consumes a lot of energy. The truth is, the Whispure Air Purifier uses approximately the same wattage as an ordinary light bulb.

Whispure works behind the scenes.
Where's Whispure? Chances are, it's hidden away against a wall or even in a corner. But rest assured, Whispure is still cleaning the air. That's because it uses front to top airflow, so you can put your Whispure wherever you need it most. And there's a Whispure model for every room in your home. Now, see if you find Whispure in the picture below.

We bought 2 units, one for the master bedroom and one for the kitchen. We can tell the difference when we are in the rooms without the units. The facial tissues have to be handy, and the hecking cough is annoying. We will be buying the largest model for the family room.

Does the job right. Quiet - not too much of a difference between middle and lowest setting, though. Energy efficient. All in all - good unit.

I moved into a new studio apartment about a month ago and the smell was awful. It smelled like flower-scented wall plug-ins. I'm moderately allergic to most scented oils, so I felt ill after being in my room for just minutes. I did manage to live in my room for week without the AP250, and when it came I didn't notice an immediate difference. Only now that I'm reflecting on how my nostrils stung that first week can I appreciate what a great job this product has done for me. During that week without the AP250 I left my windows w-i-d-e open, but the location of the apartment cut off almost all outside airflow (case in point - I had my furnace turned off and I was wearing shorts while sipping coffee next to the window). Therefore my current comfort level can almost entirely be attributed to this product. When I first walk into my apartment after work I can smell a soft tinge of the previous tennant's overwhelmingly fresh scent, but it is much much better.

Top-rated product
By JoRO from Davis, CA on 12/21/2007.
Pros: Effectiveness at cleaning, Attractive Design, User friendly, Quiet
Best Uses: Living Room, Bedroom, Smaller rooms, Asthma Control
Primary use: Personal
Describe Yourself: Value Oriented
I researched air purifiers on Consumer Report, websites, and with family members with severe allergies and asthma, and decided to spend in the mid-range for a purifier to alleviate allergies from a new cat (dander) that lead to asthma. This product's larger size is top-rated, and I've found that rating to be accurate. I find it quiet, though I personally like white noise, so this may affect my perception of the sound. I use the purifier in my small apartment, turning it on for about 20 minutes before I plan to spend significant time in the room. It's a good size and easy to carry from one room to the other. It seems to be effective, as my allergy symptoms have greatly lessened, and within 3 weeks I was able to stop taking daily asthma medication. I took another reviewer's advice and bought the replacement filters at the same time. I would recommend this -- you're going to like this product, so get those replacements ready so that you can keep it in constant use. The only thing that could make the purifier better would be a timer, so that it would turn off after an hour after I'm asleep.
Don't see a lot of difference
By CMurphy from Cambridge, MA on 12/18/2007.
Pros: Inexpensive, Quiet, User friendly
Best Uses: Living Room, Larger Rooms, Anywhere
Cons: Makes the room freezing, Drys out the air
Primary use: Personal
Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
It's too cold to leave on when you're in the room, it's freezing in fact. It also drys out everything in the room, including nose and eyes. Not exactly pleasant. Perhaps if it were in a larger room, this would not be a problem - but we did follow product specifications when deciding on size and sq. ft. etc.

Pros: Attractive Design
Best Uses: Bedroom
Primary use: Business
Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
It's relatively quiet, does the job, and you only have to change the filters every three months vs monthly for others. There is a major filter change yearly, but that's reasonable. It was easy to set up and we've had it for three weeks now and it's working quite well.
I would buy this product again.
By PC from Eugene, OR on 10/31/2007.
Pros: Attractive Design, Quiet, User friendly
Best Uses: Bedroom
Cons: Expensive
Primary use: Personal
Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
I am using this product to keep air clean in the bedroom at night for sleeping. We just recently installed new carpeting and have a dog so I needed something to help control my allergies. We previously had been using a honeywell ionizer but I have found this unit much more effective. The sound on this unit is quieter than the honeywell. Since this unit is new to me, I have not had to deal with expenses for the filters. When the unit is on high, it does sound like a bigger fan, but I really only use it on low because that does the job just fine. I would buy this again.
Smart purchase

Best Uses: Bedroom
Cons: Low setting not low
Primary use: Personal
Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
Pros: User friendly, Inexpensive
I have research air purifiers extensively and have come to the conclusion that the AP510 and AP250 and the Blueair 402 are the only purifiers you would ever need. I bought the AP250 for a small bedroom and like its 160CADR rating, low wattage, pure physical filter (no ozone spitting electrostatic), front intake top outflow air movement, and [...]. Since allergy sufferers are recommended to have a cadr rating the same as the square feet (and not the usable square feet advertised), most small purifiers at 100 cadrs are too small. This is the perfect size. The only problem is that the three settings are probably at 50% / 75% / 100% power based on my estimates. I would rather they be 30% / 70% / 100%. The low setting is not loud for the air it moves, but you don't get a quieter option. Its too bad whirlpool doesn't state the watt/cadr/decibals for each setting. You only get the watt/cadr for high. By going to energystar.com, you can see that the AP250 (and AP510 for the bigger rooms) have a great watt to cadr rating. The competitors that beat it use degrees of electrostatic and lower merv filters to achieve it, so in my book the AP250 has a low cost of operation.

Most other air purifiers produce by-products that are actually unhealthful, according to Consumer Reports. Not this one. Good prices on line if you shop around. And it comes in a larger size for larger rooms.

Best Uses: Bedroom
Primary use: Personal
Pros: Quiet, Inexpensive
Describe Yourself: Value Oriented, Quality Oriented
The product works great -- just as described on the product description and on consumer reports. The fan is quite quiet on the lowest setting. Check the dimensions of the purifier before buying, it is somewhat large if you have a small bedroom like me. This is the first air purifier I have purchased so I don't have anything to compare it against, but I am fully satisfied with this one and don't see a reason to look anywhere else in the future.

Not having seen one in a store the description defined the product. A true HEPA filter not a HEPA-type for less money than locally. Slightly more noisy on a wood floor than I had hoped for but definitely quieter than the one it replaced. Appears to be made and/or assembled in the USA with 3M filters.

I have both the AP510 and the AP250. The only thing I have to say about the 250 is that it is not as quiet as the 510. It is still an excellent product. For the bedroom, it may be a little noisy. Also, the only other issue I have is that you need to replace the Pre-Filter every 3 months or so. The HEPA filter needs to be replaced every year. When you buy any Whispure product, it only comes with one Pre Filter. It should come with 4 to keep up with the HEPA filter. Happy Breathing!

The Whirlpool AP250 air purifier is a great product to have. It works well if your an allergy sufferer as I am. That's the reason why I bought it. When allergy season arrives I cough, sneeze, watery eyes, everything! The AP250 saved me and I love it. It also removes odors in the house especially cooking smell. It's a great product and to some it is expensive but if you research some of the other products (big named brands) out there have a much higher price. The Whirlpool AP250 got great reviews on consumer digest and reports. [...] Great product buy it! Oh and if you do purchase it, just to let everyone know that you do not have to remove the styrofoam inside the unit that is to remain in the unit to provide noise reduction.

We bought the AP450 for a larger room in the house due to a very positive review from Consumer Reports. The AP450 is great, but it was to big for my son's bedroom. So we bought the AP250. It is much quieter. I don't know if it filters air as well as the AP450, but I assume that it works fine for a small bedroom.

seems to help with kitty fuzz
By Kathy from St. Louis MO on 09/14/2006.
Pros: Attractive Design, Quiet
Best Uses: Office, Bedroom
This is our 2nd Whirlpool air filter. We purchased a Model 510 several years ago to use in a large bedroom. Since we moved to a smaller condo, it's at work in our large living/dining area. We purchased 2 Model 250s for the bedrooms. They seem to be doing the job! We have a lot less dust and kitty fuzz to clean up. When we change the pre-filters, we can see how much work the filters have done. I highly recommend these Whirlpool air filters to anyone looking for a basically quiet and effective way to improve the air quality in their house.
Doing the job.
By Jimmy the Greek from Raleigh, NC on 09/8/2006.
Cons: A little noisey
Pros: Compact, Easy To Assemble, Easy To Clean, Simple Controls, The right price
Best Uses: Everyday Use
This air cleaner, is an air cleaner, not a toy. You turn it on, (our house is air conditioned) and you leave it on all the time, and after a few days you can tell the difference in the air quality in the room it's in. Our son and daughter in law have the same units with the same results. It's not absolutely quiet, but it has a soothing white noise that you really don't notice at night. I run my on the middle setting and am satisfied with my purchase.

Consumer Reports Recommended
By Aida from Southern, CA on 08/18/2006.
Pros: Easy To Clean, Compact, Simple Controls, Low Noise
Best Uses: Ideal for Bedrooms, Everyday Use, Smaller Rooms
The AP250 is an ideal choice for a bedroom or nursery. I have used the larger version, the Whirlpool AP450, for about a year in the main living area and was very satisfied with how it cleared the air of general household odors and how much the household dust level subsided. I decided to try the smaller version in my bedroom during my allergy time (April-May) and it made sleeping so much easier. I discovered these units in a Consumer's Report rating and as usual, they were right. If you are deligent about keeping the prefilter replaced, (about $6 for the charcoal prefilter which I do monthly with 2 dogs and one cat in the house), you should be able to go a very long time without changing the main, and more expensive, Hepa filter. I have found that using both of these air purifiers has even saved on how often I need to replace my main house filter with the furnace and AC unit. I operate each unit about 12 hours a day (7PM-7AM) and have seen no drastic increase in my utility bill.

Much to our dismay, we were forced to shop for a new air purifier when the filters for our favorite one were no longer manufactured. It turned out to be an unexpected benefit. We thought our old one was quiet, but this one is even quieter. And not only does it make less noise than the three others we tried, it works better as well. Highly recommended. As a small aside, there are also no annoying bright lights on the control panel (personal pet peeve). I wish more small appliances were made with such practical considerations in mind.
Compact/easy-to-use/quiet/emits no ozone
By [...] from St. Louis, MO on 08/1/2006.
Best Uses: Can run perpetually, Everyday Use, Smaller Rooms
Pros: Compact, Charcoal pre-filter, 3 fan speeds, Filter-clog lights, True HEPA filter, Very quiet, No assembly to do, Simple Controls, Moves alot of air, No dangerous ozone
Cons: Styrofoam lining
As this is a True HEPA filter unit, it doesn't emit dangerous ozone. Also includes a charcoal pre-filter to kill odors. The filters are not washable so you have to purchase new ones eventually, but they last awhile. Seems well designed, small footprint, simple to use, and supposedly requires not much more energy than a lightbulb so it can run all the time. One thing I don't like about it is that the entire exhaust-port area inside the unit down to the blower motor is lined with cheap styrofoam, I dont know why. I really have no way to tell if the unit actually processes all the air in the room every 10 minutes as it claims to, but [...] very good reviews to the Whirlpool HEPA purifier that was a little bigger than this one that uses the same design, so I assume this one does ok too in the smaller areas it was made for.
A quiet machine
By allergy sufferer in Crystal Lake from Crystal Lake, IL on 07/25/2006.
Best Uses: Everyday Use, Bedroom use
Pros: Good air flow, Quiet, Simple Controls
Pleased that it is so quiet. Old air cleaner was pretty noisy even at the lowest setting. Here's hoping this motor lasts longer than 2 years because that is what happened to my old air cleaner.
Perfect for my bedroom

Best Uses: Everyday Use, Smaller Rooms
Cons: None
Pros: Simple Controls
I took it out of the box, plugged it in and turned it on. It doesn't get any easier than that.
