I have had this product for less than a year and already it has been replaced completely under the warranty. The second one still 'sticks' when in elevation mode and doesn't come up all the way - this will probably have to be replaced too. It's noisy when the extractor fans are turned on and it doesn't remove cooking odors, steam, fumes etc. which is the whole point of having it - our venting system is excellent - there are no blockages - so why doesn't the downdraft suck away fumes etc? I would NOT recommend this product to anyone - along with my new Kitchenaid 48" built-in, side-by-side refrigerator - the ice maker has been replaced once already and now the new one has ceased to work - we're waiting for a new 'shoot' - meanwhile - no ice also less than a year old!

Does a Good Job
from Bloomingdale, IL
Comments about KitchenAid Stainless Steel Downdraft System:
I have seen the reviews and looked at them carefully but decided to go ahead and purchase this anyway. I am glad I did. It does a good job, it's a sleek and cool design, plus I don't have an ugly, visually detracting overhead hood to contend with.I put the cooktop in the island and now I can interact with my guests while cooking. The fan has variable speeds to it can evacuate the entire room of smoke if needed, but on a lower setting it does not affect the flames and still does a good job.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Everything Broke But The Sheet Metal
By Chef Chape
from Southern Shores, NC
This system began failing within two years of being placed into operation. First was the switch. Next was the control board. Next was the retractor motor. Next and finally was the fan. Every sub-component except the sheet metal! Now it seems I have to replace the entire hood and fan system, which will likely run over $2500. KA has offered a similar unit for $800, but with a smaller fan and no installation, of course. That means I'm only out about $3000 or so. This from a premium American manufacturer who does not want to recognize the utter failure of this product. I beg them for help, but they're not interested. DO NOT BUY!!
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

squeaky, yet powerful
from San Diego, CA
Not sure if it's the design, or the poor manufacturing, or the installation, but we are now on our 2nd blower. The seller is definitely at fault for selling us the first one as new, when it clearly was used and damaged. The blower squeals and squeaks going up and down and we hope it will settle down over time. We had no choice but to use this type of design, as that is what we had previously, except we had Thermador. In retrospect, we should have stayed with Thermador, but it is twice as expensive. The blower is powerful and does a good job. Fortunately, Pacific Sales replaced the first one at no cost, but this whole thing has taken at least a month.

Terrible Product - do not buy
from Miami, FL
Gets dirty quick and designed specifically to force you into service calls. Removed filters to clean and accidentally closed the unit, now its locked in the down position and we need to get service in - of course this happens 1 year and a few days after buying so need to pay for service.

Great but tough installation
from Winchester, VA
I haven't had the chance to use it for real yet, since we're still finishing the construction of our house. However, it appears to work great. Not as quiet as I would have liked. But definitely suggest having it professionally installed. It was a pain to installed and takes a lot of space under the counter! We had a foot behind the cabinet and it took most of it and about 6" of the inside cabinet. Be sure you drill holes in the back and side of cabinet and have access to those holes after the countertop installation, because you will have to adjust the height. I know I'm going to love this solution instead of a hood unit in my island but be ready for a long and difficult installation. This is coming from a homeowner that is building their own house and is very handy.

Love my new induction cook top and retractable vent! They work great!

I agree with Gina from Boston, DO NOT PURCHASE
Same scenario as Gina, remodel, purchased the downdraft, worked a couple months then the level of venting reduced to the point that it doesn't move steam from boiling water and it also only rises a third of the way out of the counter so we have to pull it the rest of the way.We had it checked out by a service rep under warranty (hired by KitchenAid). KA says it works fine but when on high power, it only measures 75 cc air flow on the meter (KA reported that measure of units falls within the acceptable range and deems the DD functional). KA will not replace the unit nor the motor. KA doesn't seemed bothered that it doesn't rise either. Very disappointed in KA. The distributor we bought it from is appalled by KA service.

Don't know what to think at this point.

Doing a complete kitchen remodel with all Kitchen Aid products. Just had my contractor and electrician install our new cooktop & venting system. Cooktop seems to be working fine but the fan does not rise up. The button only goes down just a fraction of an inch. The electrician thinks the problem is with the button. I really don't know what to think.
