    The EOS 5D Mark III features a newly developed Canon full-frame 22.3 Megapixel CMOS sensor that's designed from the ground up to create high resolution, perfectly detailed images with unprecedented speed and clarity. A full 24 x 36mm, the sensor captures 5784 x 3861 large individual 6.25 ?m pixels and has a much-improved S/N ratio. A new photodiode structure with an increased photoelectric conversion rate increases the sensor's sensitivity by approximately 2 stops over previous models, meaning higher ISOs with the lowest noise of any EOS digital camera. And a 2-line 8-channel simultaneous signal readout means speeds of up to 6.0 fps (RAW + JPEG) are possible

As an avid hobbyist photographer (used to develop my own film, back in the day) of 50 years, I am not satisfied with mediocre equipment. I gave up on film 10-12 years ago, and six years ago I got my first Full Frame digital, the 5D. Wow â€" Depth of field, focal length, f stop, ISO; all the familiar interactions from 35mm film cameras "fit" again. At the time, I thought "Almost as good as film", but much cheaper, since there is no incremental cost for each picture (Film was expensive per shot). Then 3 years ago I got the 5D mk II. Finally â€" as good as film, maybe better. Video was a nice touch, especially video of my grandkids â€" with a camera, they pose for the picture, then they think I'm done when I lower the camera from my eye and switch to video. No antics or mugging for the camera-just natural candid recordings. Two weeks ago I got the 5D mk III. After a wedding, vacation sightseeing, landscape outing, and general "for the record" shooting opportunities with the mk III, I'm thinking â€" "This is way better than film". Image quality â€" Better tonal gradations, especially of skin â€" the earth's (fields of flowers, new leaves, blossoms) and people's. By better I mean better than the best film I've used. Better than the 5D mkII. Capturing human expression in a photo is more sensitive to shading and skin tone than I'd realized, and maybe more sensitive than having high resolution. I'm capturing every expression. Dual cards â€" no more missed shots when my card fills (it always seemed that my spare card was back in the car, in the house, or home). Some of the best opportunities would pass while I fiddled deleting some rejects to make more room. Now I'm getting every shot. Great auto focus â€" With anything more than near dark (had some OOF outside at 8:30 pm in Texas the last day of March (nearly pitch black), but just 30 minutes earlier focus was spot on), nailed the focus for what I was focused on. Not always what I wanted â€" the 6 modes requires some experimentation and learning of the pros and cons of each, and remembering to switch to the appropriate mode. With deliberate shots using shallow Depth of Field, the focus was perfect every shot; much better than the mk II. Crowd scenes were trickier. Needed to select the focus point, pre-focus with a spot focus, or be satisfied with focus on the closest subject. The capability is there for perfection, however, and I know I'm getting in-focused pictures of things and people I'd never have gotten with any other camera I've used. Quiet shutter mode â€" Wonderful! In a public setting, or with kids/animals, I can take pictures without distracting anyone. I'm much more willing to take the shot and capture the moment now with the mk III. Chromatic Aberration Correction â€" Finally! Amateurs don't always get to choose the perfect shooting angle; I have more backlit pictures than I'd care to admit. However, with some lenses the CA is awful. Found no purple or green fringing with high contrast shots with the mk III, while many of my mk II photos would be unusable. More keepers. The many other little features (HDR â€" tried a few), lock on mode dial, etc. all add up to more good photos taken & fewer missed opportunities. Bottom line â€" I'm capturing more photos, good photos, and getting more beautiful pictures of people and things than with any other camera I've used, and that is what photography is about for me. Terrific!!!

I wish Canon would produce a camera without all the video features. It would be nice to purchase a camera that just takes pictures. Leave out all the video stuff that goes unused and give the photographer, "the photographer" something they can benefit from. How about a dedicated mirror lockup button. Include a voice memo function like the 1D series. Better low light focus accuracy. Include a focus assist light on the pro cameras. Wifi on the pro cameras. Put some R&D into a faster sync speed. How about camera based image stabilization?

Lots of hot pixels, otherwise good camera. When shooting in RAW+JPEG you will not notice many hot pixels, but when looking at the RAW files it looks as if someone had spilled glitter all over the photo because of all the hot pixels. I'm not sure why this is the case, maybe that is what happens when cameras get old.

I have had a 5D Mk2 for 2 yrs and love the camera. However I just purchased a MK3 and I am amazed at the upgrades to almost all features and setting on the unit. This is truly a fast focus and metering GIANT, with more pixels easier controls, locking mode selector, everything is better. The menu access, shooting settings, are all well thought out and engineered. Very impressive camera.

This is my review of the Canon 5D Mark III. This camera is one of the most professional, versatile, fast and powerful full frame DSLRs on the market. In this review, my goal is to focus more on how great this camera functions and why it is considered in my opinion the complete package compared to other Canon bodies. BUILD QUALITY When you first pick up a 5D Mark III, you will immediately notice how this camera is built and feels like a tank. This body is made out of a much stronger material called magnesium alloy. Compared to other DSLR's on the market, this body feels much more professional, refined, and advanced. It is much more damage resistance and weather resistant as well. FULL FRAME SENSOR First, one of the best functions of this camera that surpasses most DSLR's on the market is that this camera is built with a full frame or near 35mm equivalent sensor. Most DSLRs on the market are sold with APS-C or other cropped sensors, providing more focal length while sacrificing image quality (reducing the amount of light to the sensor), especially in low light situations and environments. The image quality of a full frame sensor among APS - C, APS - H, Micro 4/3rds produce night and day results for professional quality images. The image quality with the 5D Mark III compared to other models is even noticeable in the color rendering of each image. There are even differences in color rendering between the 5D Mark III and the Canon 6D, two individual full frame cameras. I'm not sure all the technical reasons why this is the case, but I think it has something to do with the Digic 5+ processors. the 5D Mark III color is a much richer, where is the 6D images tend to be slightly washed out or lacking full vibrancy. FRAMES PER SECOND The second function that I enjoy a lot about the 5D Mark III is that it can shoot a healthy and fast 6 frames per second. Consider for a second that most APS-C bodies shoot anywhere from 3 to four and a half frames per second on average. Excluding the Canon 1DX for a moment, Canon’ full frame lineup is limited to only the 6D, 5DS and 5DSR. The 6D only produces 4.5 frames per second and both the 5DS and 5DSR only produce 5 frames per second. The amazingly fast Canon 7D Mark II, which was recently released early last year comes equipped with 10 frames per second, but it does not meet my standards non longer because it's an APS-C camera. Without having to spend big money and have the added weight and size of a battery pack of a pro camera like the 1DX, The Canon 5D Mark III is still a clear winner regarding frames per second because it has the best balance to capture most subjects fast and sharp. SILENT CONTINUOUS MODE One of the functions that might be underrated or underestimated and DSLR's today is the silent continuous mode, which I enjoy a lot to use. there are some situations where using high continuous mode makes the shutter sound very annoying to others nearby. Other nonprofessional cameras don't normally have this silent continuous mode where I can shoot at a maximum of 3 frames per second, but about 75% quieter than normal. You can still shoot great pictures and maintain the element of surprise toward your subjects. AUTO-FOCUS SYSTEM The 5D Mark III still has one of the best autofocusing systems currently today. While 61 AF points may not be the most compared to other competitor bodies, what really matters to me is the accuracy and the speed and how this AF system reacts to multiple subjects. For this camera body, you have six different autofocus ‘cases’ that you can choose from and adjust for the appropriate shooting situation. Most cameras don't have ‘cases’. You can shoot from a single point to a 61-point AF all cross-type. It is very responsive and I would say personally that is about 97 to 98% accurate depending on what you're shooting ISO RANGE Compared to most Canon bodies, the Canon 5D Mark III still has one of the best ISO range systems for light sensitivity. In my opinion, the 1DX, 5D Mark III, and the 6D can produce the best image quality results with both higher ISO ranges combined with their full frame sensors. Compared to two other major competitors, Canon's full-frame lineup does need to catch up in the ISO department. I do wish the 5D Mark III had a higher mega pixel sensor, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi and an electronic view finder. For those, who say that is not necessary, check what the market is producing. The 5D Mark III still commands much respect and it will continue to be my go to camera hopefully for years to come or when its successor arrives. Thank you for reading!
