Yamaha 7.1 Channel Black AV Home Theater Receiver, Model RXV573BL

Features:

  • Audio
    • 7-channel powerful surround sound
      • 115W per Channel (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9 % THD, 1 ch driven)
      • 80W per Channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09 % THD, 2 ch driven)
    • HD Audio format decoding: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio; Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio
    • Discrete amp configuration
    • Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels
    • Direct Mode for high quality sound reproduction
    • Low jitter PLL circuitry helps optimize sound imaging
    • Assignable amplifiers for bi-amp connection
  • 4K pass-through for next generation super high resolution images
This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. While not yet available, 4K displays and sources are sure to become popular in the future. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display, for image clarity far beyond present standards
  • HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel
3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable
  • Network Functions
This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet Radio. The AV Controller app (from iTunes App Store or Android Market) lets you control various functions from your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones
  • AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation
This AV Receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller app that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Android Market to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones. A tablet version is also available
  • AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV receiver
This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means they can accept wireless music streaming from iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computer on your home theater system. You can use view metadata such as song title, artist name as well as album art* via AV receiver's on-screen display
    • *Some models don't support album art display
  • Zone B output provides 2-channel sound in a second room
Zone B output capability allows the receiver to send 2-channel sound to a second zone, so the main zone now has 5-channel output. This means that users can enjoy stereo sound in a second room. The same source will play in both zones (cannot use two sources)
  • YPAO Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup
YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It’s like having a professional installer calibrate your system
  • USB Digital Connection for iPod, iPhone and iPad on the Front Panel
A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions
  • SCENE for One-Touch Start
Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV Receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can re-set the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds
  • HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers
  • Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode
When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray™ Disc player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources
  • HDMI CEC for Easy Operation
Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop
    • *All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work
  • Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging
The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound
  • Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.
Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others
  • ECO mode lowers power consumption by 20%
Yamaha’s new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20%. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu
    • * Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement).
  • Selectable Auto Power Down
Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours
  • Low Standby Power Consumption
Yamaha makes its receivers eco-friendly with a low standby power consumption of 0.1W in IR Standby mode (1W in HDMI Standby Through mode, 2W in Network Standby mode)
  • Other Notable Video Features
Supports Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, 24 Hz Refresh Rate and Auto Lip-Sync compensation
  • Other Notable Advanced Features
    • Charging of iPod, iPhone and iPad via USB when AV Receiver is off
    • iPod/iPhone song titles displayed in English and Western European languages on the front panel
    • Multi language color OSD for improved visibility
    • Audio input assign capability for HDMI and component video input
    • Audio Delay for adjusting Lip-Sync (0-250 ms)
    • 40-station preset tuning / Auto preset tuning
    • Preset remote unit

I have had this unit for only a short time. My initial impressions are quite good. It has a number of options which are relatively straightforward to set, with a few exceptions noted below. What made the setup easier for me was having had another receiver for the past 6+ years which allowed me to play with a number of parameters and get a better understanding of them.

Prior to buying this unit, I downloaded the manual and extensively went through it to familiarize myself with the unit. I also wrote down the settings from the other receiver so that I could duplicate them in the Yamaha. I found the Yamaha manual to be informative. The Yamaha manual tends to explain what changing a setting does. However, the Yamaha manual is packaged on a CD making reference to it difficult since my computer is not in the same room as the Yamaha. (Yamaha touts this as being green, not as a cost savings.)

Also before buying the unit, I downloaded the firmware update and put it on a USB drive without any other files of mine. This was for two reasons. One was to try and prevent any issues with other files on the drive (updates can be cranky) and to prevent any surprise deletions and/or file corruption. I used the USB method to eliminate any network uncertainties.

When I first started setting up the unit I plugged it in and only connected it to my TV (via HDMI). I deliberately did not connect the unit to the internet. I checked if the unit was already updated. It was not. The update was rather painless but it seemed to take a while.

I did a manual setup choosing not to use YPAO.
The screen menus are an old fashioned throwback looking like early 1990s DOS graphics. There is also a disconcerting screen flicker every time one scrolls on a main menu item under Setup. The concept of repeatedly pressing the Info button to see one current setting item at a time is also archaic. Further, these can only be seen on the unit display, not on the TV display. It would be very helpful to have all the settings displayed on the TV even if it meant paging through them. At least they could be seen in one place for easy reference. It now requires going to different places to see different settings and remembering where a particular setting is.

There are also some things which the manual does not seem to mention. Page 37 of the manual, describing Cinema DSP 3D, states that two conditions must be met for the 3D part to function. Actually, there is a third condition. I called Yamaha support and the person I spoke with said that the illustration in the manual showed a 5.1 system while I have a 2.1 system. I suggested that this really did not prove anything as all the illustrations show the same 5.1 system. We then got cut off. (He never did call me back even though he had my phone number.) I decided to test the idea and found that Cinema DSP 3D really does require at least a 5.1 system.

Another issue was Cinema DSP and surround decoders. I was under the impression that it was possible to have both. This does not appear to be the case. Either Cinema DSP is chosen OR a surround decoder (such as Dolby PLII Music) but not both. That is, they appear to be mutually exclusive. I do not see this addressed in the manual.

Another issue is that for Internet Radio the unit chooses MP3 decoding even if a higher resolution is available for a particular station. It seems surprising that a unit like this only supports the most basic streaming resolution. Could this be a possible candidate for a future update? (I contacted Yamaha support on this and the written reply I received was poorly written and confusing.)

The support for upper end audio files appears to be incomplete. While two channel FLAC files (up to 96MHz) are supported, it is not apparent to me if multichannel FLAC support is available. Yamaha support said no, but I suspect that it does. (As I have a 2.1 system, I cannot test this.) However, the 2ch Stereo DSP setting does not mix down the channels. The wma multichannel files I tried do not work. A USB connected hard drive was not recognized. For mp3 files taken from a CD where the different tracks are supposed to be played without pause, the receiver had a noticeable discontinuity between files when being played from a flash drive.

Using network streaming was inconsistent. I tested this using a PC with Windows 7 and Windows Media Player which had the addition of a FLAC codec. The receiver and the PC are on the home network. The receiver seemingly randomly recognized the PC. That is, sometimes there was no server, sometimes there was. Further, the PC would disappear from the server listing. However, after some setup and some time, the PC had no trouble finding the receiver. I was able to stream FLAC files to the receiver.

I do not use the receiver for video, only for audio, therefore I cannot comment on the video portion. I like that there are 4 HDMI inputs (I only use 2 so far) and 2 optical audio inputs (I use both). I have not used the bi-amp feature yet, although I intend to as my speakers have this capability. As I understand it, the two feeds in bi-amp mode from the Yamaha are identical. The sound is as good as I expected. I really cranked it up and was impressed by the sound and that fact that many of the adjustments (volume and tone controls, for example) are in .5 db increments allowing for fine control.

Bought the unit to replace a 10 year old yamaha that got fried by a power surge. For day to day use, watching directv and listening to cds, it is great! Also hooked up a Blue ray player and anytime I adjust volume of any blueray movie the picture goes out on my HD tv while volume adjusts. Only happens when watching movie on blueray player and thats it, VERY ANNOYING!!!

I've had it for 2 weeks. Does everything that I need. I have Directv and a 3D blu ray player hooked up to the receiver with one cable going to the TV. The 3D and blu ray movies sound/look great, and the sound was greatly improved when watching Directv. Plenty of settings, for me, to adjust manually. I don't find the menu's hard to navigate. I do wish the remote had a backlight, as I watch TV with low/no lights. It's not the latest and greatest, but those cost considerably more. It's exactly what I wanted...a reasonably priced receiver that works well for my setup. So far I am impressed with this receiver.

This is a very nice amp/receiver. It works well and has way more features than I will ever use. I can control the unit with my Android tablet through an app. That's pretty cool. I like the Internet Radio feature. Changing the sound processing gives different types of sounds (movies vs music etc.) a different feel.
My only complaint/problem with this unit is an ongoing problem with HDMI handshaking. When changing from one device to another sometimes the devices don't properly synchronize and the TV gets no signal. This is a known problem for the Yamahas. The solution generally is to turn everything off and then restart everything in the proper order (TV, AVR, external devices).

I really like this receiver because it was fairly straightforward to setup (although speaker posts pose a challenge if you connect with straight wire) and sounds very good in the room with plenty of power. All my devices connected and worked without issue (HTPC, bluray, roku, HDTV). Airplay for music works great, but as others have said, no Airplay video pass-through. This probably isn't a deficiency, probably an Apple restriction. As others have said, the remote is a bit of a challenge. The receiver is missing HD Radio, but who listens to radio anymore? My biggest complaint is the on-screen menu. It's completely useless compared to the rx-v673, which I also own. It would also be nice if this were a true multi-zone amp, but it isn't and it says so in the specs. Bottom line, the most important aspect of a receiver is its sound and its integration with other AV components. This receiver excels in these two key competencies. Highly recommended, but if you can afford the rx-v673, you should make the step up to get true multi-zone amp and a much better setup experience.

I use this product for gaming and tv. Things i would like to see would be a dumbed down reciever. I will never use the internet radio really or airplay. They should create a cheap audiophile version like they do with car stereo recievers. Also i have a windows phone so no support for the app. I love how the yamaha looks and works. On screen display just which it had more power and less app stuff

Has many features I will probably never use, but does everything I need and does it well for a reasonable price. Supplies all audio capability for my family room home theater and TV. I replaced a (fully functional and more expensive) 2004-era AV receiver to gain AirPlay and network connectivity features, especially the remote app. Great unit.

Great receiver, My only beef is the fact that you have to switch inputs on the TV when you have a device that is using component video(as opposed to HDMI) One would think that as advanced as this unit is that it would put ALL video inputs out the HDMI output. Other than that, this is an absolutely STELLAR unit that will produce astounding sound image and would be an asset to anybody's home theater setup.

Inexcusable that a receiver in this timeframe does not come STANDARD with RDS and HD Radio! Read the cons for the rest of the MIA features. This unit is half baked, but there could be potential if Yamaha adds the misses in my cons section. The system is underpowered for my Polk RTiA9 and matching surround w/sub (7.1 setup).

Overall, a good entry-level system, but not as good as it should be for the price, IMHO.

I used it to power my 40' x 150' screen it pool for my outdoor movie theater with BenQ projector + Yamaha outdoor speakers and 12" Sub. I was worry at first if this thing have enough power for outdoor enviroment. Let me say that it has plenty of power without breaking the bank. The iPhone app is great which allow me full control of the system outside white the receiver is inside. I also have a Pioneer receiver for my indoor system, the Yamaha app is definetly superior to the Pioneer app. The scene buttons are a great design (wife friendly feature for sure). My only knock is that I have strange performance from the HDMI video. The HDMI output is connected to the SH910 BenQ projector and the HDMI1 input is connected to the PS3 mostly for BluRay movie. The movie would play fine, usually after the movie is over and I am at the main PS3 menu, the projector would start flashing (like camera flash) every so often. At first I thought it was the projector and/or the HDMI cable/connection so I change out the HDMI cables and double check all connection to make sure it's all secure (the projector is ceiling mount so it certainly wasn't moved while playing the movie). The problem comes back the next time I finished watching the movie so I decided just to power cycle the Yamaha receiver...and BOOM the problem went away. Whenever I have the 'flashing' screen symptoms I would power cycle the receiver and the problem went away. It's not a problem right now because it usually last the whole movie without problem. It seem to happen when I switch video source or exit the movie to the PS3 flash screen. I hope it's not a persistent problem. Other than the HDMI problem, I love this receiver but this can potentially a big problem because I use it primarily for watching TV and movie.
