Features:

4K pass-through for next generation super high resolution images
This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. While not yet available, 4K displays and sources are sure to become popular in the future. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display, for image clarity far beyond present standards.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel
3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable.

Network Functions
This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet Radio. The AV Controller app (from iTunes App Store or Android Market) lets you control various functions from your iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones.

AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation
This AV Receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller app that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Android Market to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPod, iPhone, iPad or Android phones. A tablet version is also available.

AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV receiver
This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means they can accept wireless music streaming from iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computer on your home theater system. You can use view metadata such as song title, artist name as well as album art* via AV receiver's on-screen display.

YPAO Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Setup
YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It’s like having a professional installer calibrate your system.

USB Digital Connection for iPod, iPhone and iPad on the Front Panel
A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions.

SCENE for One-Touch Start
Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV Receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can re-set the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.

Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode
When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray™ Disc player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation
Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop.

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging
The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others.

I bought this A/V receiver to replace an older Denon receiver that did not have the more modern HDMI interfaces. Had I never configured an A/V unit before, I think I would have been lost with the instructions. However, with some trial and error, I was able to hook up all the connections correctly. Configuring the unit to operate with my new Plasma from Samsung and my older Blu-Ray player was somewhat difficult given the instructions contained in the pdf file supplied. Of particular difficulty was figuring out that although I hooked up the unit via HDMI to my TV and my Uverse system, the system still needed an optical cable from the TV to the A/V receiver in order to hear sound generated from the TV's Internet content (e.g., Netflix, Hulu, etc.) Even then, I cannot understand why HDMI control settings cannot be used to switch automatically to the AV4 optical input from the TV. I am still unable to figure out SCENE settings. I am also still not clear on the configuration of all of the audio, DLNA, DSP, and media player features. So, while I give the physical unit itself 5 stars, the instruction manual lowers my total rating to only 4 stars. Main Pros: Loved the YPAO microphone setup. This was a great improvement over the setup of my older Denon unit. Within 5 minutes, all my speakers were configured. Ease of speaker connections. Multiple HDMI inputs to a single HDMI output. Cons: Confusing and often contradictory user manual instructions - especially for one not already steeped in A/V technology lingo. Had some problems with unit suddenly switching HDMI inputs or going to the AV4 input. However, after upgrading the firmware, problems seem to have been resolved.

I think this is a good product for a basic set up as there are only 4 HDMI Inputs which is low for this price point. However, no where in the 100+ page user manual that you print yourself does it say that the Composite Video connections are not converted to the HDMI out to the TV. When I could hear audio but no picture, but could get a picture by connecting directly to the TV, I assumed the Composite video connections on the receiver were faulty. A return/exchange later and repeated problem resulted in a call to Yamaha to have them very quickly tell me that the Composite video does not convert to HDMI in this unit. Very disappointing.

I bought this Yamaha to replace a Kenwood that was 21 years old. The Kenwood still is in perfect condition, it just does not have any modern technology like HDMI etc. One thing That I loved doing for 21 years is watch sports while listening to music. I cannot do that with this Yamaha and that is a huge Bummer! I regret buying this thing but I'm stuck with it! When I retired my old Kenwood it felt like I was cheating on a good woman. And now I know why:(

Comments about Yamaha 5.1 Channel Black AV Home Theater Receiver:

this box sounds fine and is fairly simple to use. occasionally, it does not pass hdmi video correctly and there's a noticeable rgb that's missing. typically, once that happens, hdmi control via the attached tv becomes inoperative.
the only work around i've found is to do a complete reset. course once that's done all settings are lost and well u know what that means.

I bought this receiver as an open box item and got a really good deal as I needed to replace an old Sony that I had been nursing along due to surround sound cutting out (cold solder connection). I'm not a tech genius but I found the setup and selection of variuos sound modes quite confusing. It would also have been helpful if a hard copy manual came with the unit as working from my laptop with the included disc manual was cumbersome and very irritating. The instructions for changing modes and scenes were very confusing. I will probably spend the next few weeks trying to tweak the scenes and settling on specific modes for video and audio settings.

I owned a Kenwood system for 25 years and it finally died; so I needed to replace my amp/receiver and I wanted a quality unit to please my ears with all of the latest features to please this tech savvy audiophile. I also have several legacy components I needed to integrate into the system because I still enjoy my record player, tape deck and high quality VCR. I am happy to report that Yamaha has crafted the perfect device for me. It is priced to fit an entry level budget yet packed with high end features that make it compete with systems that cast hundreds of dollars more. There are plenty of inputs and outputs to build out your home entertainment needs and the addition of Airplay, with its network interface, provides connectivity to thousands of internet stations worldwide. My favorite station is KKJZ, a jazz and blues station broadcast from Longbeach, California, and the RX-V473 pulls the internet signal in with crystal clear quality sound. The only disappointment I have experienced with this amp/receiver is the lack of a video converter. I bought this unit hoping it would upscale and downscale from HDMI to Component Video since it has inputs/outputs for both. The connections are separate and are not co-joined within the amp. You can send Component in and out just fine, and you can send HDMI in and out just fine, but you can't send HDMI in hoping the RX-V473 will convert the signal to Component Video out. I have learned to use another converter box to get around this deficiency and I am completely happy with my Yamaha home entertainment system. I would highly recommend the Yamaha RX-V473 to all levels of home entertainment and sound system enthusiast.

I had no problem putting this system together & running the setup. We have a nice room for it, 28 X 14, and it is in the middle of the long wall. Subwoffer is awesome, even at low volumes, it DOES make a difference! The only problem I have is with the speaker wire connections. The wires keep falling out of the speakers. I wish they had used the same kind of connections as on the back of the receiver, or even screw terminals. Those spring clamps aren't strong enough to hold those thin wires. It may be better after I replace the wires with 16gauge, I will wait to see. Other than that, I love the sound!! AN equalizer would have been nice, but just for TV viewing, heh..

Yamaha RX-V473BL (AV RECEIVER W/USB, BLACK)
I purchased my unit because my needs were diverse. I am an emerging audiophile and am steeped in listening to live recordings that have been preserved in flac. I have 6TB of various different performances, all which occurred prior to the turn of the latest Century. My wife, however, loves the latest movies that are produced in Dolby Digital, 5.1, DTS, 3-D, etc… I was ready to update my receiver in the beginning of 2013 and rigorously began my research. To be honest my final decision to go for the Yamaha was because of a recommendation made by a friend who is a master at putting updated live recordings with their VHS partners (he is nothing short of a master sound engineer although he is a hobbyist). So, when he spoke to me regarding the Yamaha—I was eager to purchase it!!
I was shocked in that it was affordable. I thought I would have to sacrifice the "network" option on my budget; yet, to my surprise, the only feature that the onkyther (spelling??) brand had was about 6 more HDMI inputs and Bi-amping. This was good news thanks to my strict usage constraints not allowing me to sprawl into the living and dining room. We have a dedicated listening/viewing room that is approximately 350 sq.ft. with a 55 inch HDTV and 5.1 speakers.
I had always been proud of my last 2.0 stereo receiver and the sound it produced BUT when I first pressed play with the Yamaha my jaw dropped. My wife actually came up to listen when she heard the first notes from the Yamaha. The sound is so true to the original it is amazing. I love the sound from Yamaha—I find myself growing more and more fond of the neo:6 music feature with every listening session. I am a purest and the Yamaha excels in that arena! I am fortunate to be able to spend 3-4 quality listening hours a day and the Yamaha NEVER FAILS to put a smile on my face. I change from HDMI to digital optical inputs at about an equal value and the Yamaha is in its sweet spot with both of these modes—it simply puts my old receiver where it belongs—on a shelf in the garage!
The 5.1 and theater listening was new to me so I was a bit apprehensive in the set up and how the quality would hold up in this area. Well the Yamaha has a speaker set-up feature that is so simple it will blow you away. It dialed itself in with amazing theater sound. I am starting to figure out the Blu-Ray, TV, NET, and Radio zones but still have a ways to go, but our movie night has become an exciting listening adventure. I absolutely cannot be happier with my purchase.

Would I have discovered the Yamaha without my friend's advice? The answer is YES!! I had already read some reviews from a European Electronics Consumer fair that put the 473 at the top (in its price range)which is what caused me to seek his advice regarding the unit. When I asked him he said he had been using his Yamaha receiver for more than 10 years and would go NOWHERE else for Home AV/Theater sound!! Thank you Yamaha for putting the quality in the parts that are needed for pure listening instead the next fad feature like the other (got the spelling right this time)brands do!!! I will be using this receiver for many years--

Excessively long wait times for technical service. Excellent technicians, well trained and helpful. No built-in conversion of component video to HDMI. Confusimg remote. The on-line manual is surprisingly unhelpful considering its length.
