I use this receiver in my living room for my home theater as well as my music system. The Internet capabilities allow me to listen to my favorite radio stations from back home and watch movies and listen to music in my computer. It's loaded with features I have yet to try. I have my Klipsch speaker system connected to it and the sound quality runs circles around that of my previous Pioneer Elite receiver. This for me is the ultimate upgrade. I'll probably never need to upgrade again.

Great sounding receiver !

I purchased this AV receiver to replace my 13-yr old former flagship Yamaha RX-V1 receiver after the center channel amplifier went out on me. In short, this is a very good receiver in terms of raw sound quality, but nowhere near the raw sound quality the former Yamaha flagship receivers. I also own the Yamaha RX-Z11 for my primary home theater system, which was basically an updated version of the RX-V1 using the same primary amp/preamp section (I ran the RX-V1 with a pair of Def Tech 7002 mains, CLR 2500 center, and a pair of BP-2X surrounds). I considered replacing it with Emotiva separates, but I did not want to deal with all the interconnect cables between the amp and preamp to do the same function of an AV receiver. I also considered purchasing a used RX-Z11, but I did not feel comfortable about not having any warranty coverage, so I finally decided on the Yamaha RX-A3020. It appears that Yamaha no longer manufactures the same flagship line of AV receivers that the RX-V1 and RX-Z11 were. Since I figured that this AV receiver was going to be used as part of a secondary home theater system, I was hoping that I would not miss the same smooth and clean "flagship" sound. To an extent, the differences were not greatly significant. After connecting and fine tuning the RX-A3020, I quickly discovered that the only way that this receiver could even come close to the former flagship model's raw sound quality was to set to "Pure Direct" mode bypassing the processing and equalization controls to obtain clearer and cleaner sound, especially at lower volume levels. The only drawback to this setting is that the number of channels used will be limited to the sound source's number of channels (i.e. the front presence channels that I have set up in the room will no longer be utilized). I am not saying that the RX-A3020 is a bad receiver. I am saying that it is a very good receiver for its class. When I spoke to the Yamaha Tech Reps before purchase, they never gave me a clear answer about whether or not this new "flagship" receiver was in the same class in terms of raw sound quality as the former RX-V1 and RX-Z11. Instead, they only emphasized that this was currently their best AV receiver. All in all, this receiver is not a true equivalent of the older Yamaha flagships mentioned earlier. This receiver falls more into the upper mid-grade class than the high-end audiophile class of AV receivers.

I owned another YAMAHA Flagship Home Theater Receiver, the RX-Z1 which I purchased New about 10 years ago. I was a victim of Superstorm Sandy and my RX-Z1 was submerged under Saltwater. I had the receiver for over 10 years and never had a problem with it and as old as it was, it still sounded as great as the first day I set it up.

Because I owned YAMAHA's Flagship Home Theater Receiver in the passed, I told my wife I would never purchase another brand and nothing less then YAMAHA's best.

To comparing the two receivers (the RX-Z1 and the new RX-A3020) -
The sound is comparable due to the Bur-Brown Processors
The power output is comparable because it is only around 15 more watts Per Channel
The build quality is similar as both are Flagship Receivers
The control over sound manipulation IE Frequency Control, and Subwoofer Crossover is much improved over the older receiver.

Where this receiver really shines is the Video Processing and Upconverting video to the new 4k Displays. Note: I am using ISF HDMI cables and WOW, the video processing through the RX-A3020 is amazing. With the filtering and all, the video is crystal clear. Also, the sound with the new sound through HDMI (uncompressed audio) makes a huge difference over the older receiver.

I would Definitely recommend the RX-A3020 to anyone I know. It is a well built receiver with beautiful sound and amazing video processing for a crystal clear picture. If you want the best of the best, do not look any further than the YAMAHA RX-A3020 AVENTAGE Home Theater Receiver. You will definitely NOT be disappointed.

Just one thing, this receiver runs very hot. I highly recommend not placing any other A/V Equipment underneath or on top of this receiver. If you give it plenty of breathing room, you can have a great party using the 9 Channel Party Mode or watch a Sci-Fi Movie with shocking sound.

My L/C/R Definitive Technology speakers along with my front presence and rear rock solid speakers and a 15 inch Valodyne sub with no effort. Speaker setup is very simple with the supplied mike. I strongly suggest doing the angle measurements. I strayed from the Yamaha line for my last receiver and was very disappointed. I couldn't wait to replace it with the Rx-A3020. I dont think I will stray again. This receiver has more usable options than I have seen in any other comparable receiver. I have been totally impressed. Yamaha is the best in home theater.........

I am new to home theaters so I wanted to get a quality product that would give me a long service life; I read nothing but great reviews on the Yahama Aventage lineup so I placed an order for the 3020. I have not been disappointed with the functionality of this unit, there was a learning curve but I would guess that would be true for all makes and models. This is easily driving my Polk RTi A9s, CSi A6, and RTi A3s. I am constantly finding new capabilities for my system and I've only had the AVR for less than a month. YPAO setup my speakers very well, I highly recommend the mutlipoint and angle measurements, I originally ran a single point measurement and was dissatisfied. The programmable scenes are nice, if I had to use my Harmony remote to setup everything, I don't know if I could do it as the Harmony remote doesn't seem to have the full programmability I'd need. I had to disable HDMI control on all my devices because it just doesn't work well, not the fault of any one manufacturer. Overall this is a great unit with plenty of features to make watching movies very enjoyable.
