Sony RX100 Black CyberShot Digital Camera - DSCRX100B

Exquisite image quality and high-end handling are available for the first time in a truly compact camera. The Cyber-shot® RX100 features a massive 1" sensor and large-aperture F1.8 lens with integrated control ring for intuitive access to settings. Combined with supreme ISO sensitivity, you'll enjoy richly-detailed results with remarkably low noise even in challenging lighting conditions. Whether you're a pro looking for a premium compact camera, or simply want to take your point and shoot photography to the next level, the RX100 offers excellent quality and SLR-like operation in a sophisticated, pocket-friendly package you'll want to take everywhere.

Massive 20.2MP Image Sensor Compared to the average point and shoot 1/2.3" sensor size, the RX100 boasts a large, specially developed 1" Exmor CMOS sensor to capture more light from your scene and reproduce every stunning detail with greater fidelity. Original dual noise reduction and column A/D conversion further decrease noise to ensure smooth, clear reproduction—even in low-light settings. "No photos this good have ever come from a camera this small." — The New York Times

Optimal Optics Legendary Carl Zeiss® optics and unrivalled Sony imaging technology come together in the RX100's high-performance Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens. Despite its compact dimensions, this extraordinary lens offers supremely accurate performance, 3.6x optical zoom and an enormous F1.8 circular aperture for gorgeous defocused backgrounds. An integrated control ring puts easy, intuitive access to camera settings right at your fingertips. Zeiss

Wide Range ISO Sensitivity Shoot in nearly any light with natural results thanks to sensitivity that ranges from ISO 125 to 6400. Let the Auto ISO mode automatically determine the most appropriate setting, or manually expand sensitivity for greater control. The bright lens, extra large sensor and precision image processing work together to ensure remarkably low noise in a wide range of lighting conditions.

Complete Creative Control Get SLR-like handling with a full range of controls for video and still shooting-from Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual (P/A/S/M) modes for more advanced photographers, to an incredibly effective iAuto mode perfect for beginners. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build confidence and exercise greater creative control.

RAW Image Capture Save pictures as compact JPEG files, ultra high-quality RAW files, or both at once. When shooting in RAW format, images are saved prior to de-mosaicing or applying white balance, sharpness and color enhancement for maximum latitude when enhancing images on your PC.

Gorgeous Full HD Video Create amazingly clear, extra-smooth movies with Full HD 1080/60p video capture in the AVCHD Ver. 2.0 (progressive) format at a high frame rate of 60 fps. You can even record fast-moving subjects and dark settings with astonishing clarity thanks to the large image sensor and high-performance lens.

Features:

  • Massive 20.2MP Exmor® 1” CMOS Image Sensor The massive 20.2MP Exmor® 1” CMOS sensor captures ultra-high definition images that take full advantage of the camera’s sharp Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® T* lens. The sensor enables advanced column A/D processing that reduces noise levels, resulting in astonishing low light images with incredible smooth and clear details.
  • Capture JPEG files, RAW files, or both The DSC-RX100 saves pictures as compact JPEG files and/or ultra-high quality RAW files. RAW files save images prior to de-mosaicing, white balance, sharpness and color enhancement. This retains maximum latitude for enhancing the image on your PC.
  • P/A/S/M modes for video and stills Enjoy a full range of controls for video and still shooting from the beginner's iAUTO mode to P/A/S/M: Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. On-screen prompts help you refine your skills, build your confidence and exercise greater creative control.
  • Low-light ISO 6400 sensitivity Incredibly clear low-light pictures without sacrificing detail, made possible by the low-noise Exmor® CMOS image sensor and refined BIONZ® image processor.
  • Bright F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens with 3.6x zoom Newly developed large-diameter F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens delivers refined background defocusing - bokeh. A premium multi-layered T* coating also dramatically reduces ghost and flare caused by light reflection.
  • Full HD 1080/60p Record crystal clear movies at the highest resolution available with capabilities for 60p in 1080. This provides stunning, fast motion video with less distortion for playback on your HD TV.2 With dual record of stills and movies, you can shoot both at the same time.

Only had the camera for one day and have shot about 75 pictures so far. Depth of field control and the speed of the glass live up to the hype and I already see the potential to get DSLR quality shots out of this point and shoot. The build quality and feel of the camera are impressive and made in Japan on the bottom still means something to me. It is jeans pocketable and the screen is bright. The kids like to watch the illustration feature work, but I wouldn't generally use the illustration and other features that modify the image. I've shot a few panaramas but have had trouble getting it to do 360 degrees around, so far the best I've been able to do is 180 or so. Maybe I'll be able to get the little intro screens to go away when I switch modes, but I haven't figured it out yet, not a big deal. Overall seems like a great camera if I'm only going to carry one on a big vacation and don't want to lug the DSLR. I'll update the review with more feedback down the road after I get more time with the camera.

This was a replacement / upgrade from Nikon S53c and although it's specs are impressive, it's handling is difficult thus all the aftermarket grips, etc. Macro mode has fixed f stop and only works @ wide angle. Very fast write times considering the large files. This camera is pocketable, but reinforce your pockets! Why no magnesium ergo shape for this price? Fast lens at this size IF YOU shoot only wide angle. Lack of decent printed manual is cheesy marketing.

      Pros

      • everything in it. compact and travel friendly

      Cons

      • flash is a little too complicated to handle. very delicate.

      Best Uses

This compact RX 100 define my needs. I used to have a DSLR camera and I feel like a professional photographer but never had the time to learn the basic. But this packet size gadget will not just let you travel light but it will also give you the same action that professional DSLR users have. I recommend this camera for travels and nature lovers

        Best pocket rocket cam today?

        By deevee

        from Saratoga CA

        Pros

        • Great IQ ; nice build; compact; useful Fcn button; fast AF

        Cons

        • a bit on pricey; 1/2000 speed;

        Best Uses

IQ: perhaps the best of all p+s thanks to the large sensor (but dynamic range still a bit behind micro fourthirds and FF) better than the competition (except perhaps Nikon 1 series?) noise is quite good , image usable to ISO 800 Quality build, clean and sturdy a la Leica minimal design but Fcn button is quick and accessible to may features Control wheel is quite versatile (for ISO , zoom , aperture ..) LCD is bright , detailed and one of the best in industry AF is fast and AF points can be adjusted Great choices of filters, my favorite is Illustration low quite shutter great Zeiss lens Some negs: max speed is only 1/2000 thus can't sue max aperture under bright light no builtin ND (could have compensated for max speed) a bit slippery to hold (need a skin or a leather half case ; I use strap around wrist for security) would have preferred 24-85mm zoom to 28-100mm zoom a bit dim at longer end a bit pricey

All that I could ask for

          By DetroitPics

          from Detroit, MI

          Pros

          • Near, if not the same as DSLR quality

          Cons

          • Can't use a remote

          Best Uses

I'm new to photography and chose this one over a DSLR because the fact is that I'll take 10X as many photos with this one. It's fast and small and I'll always have it with me. Walking along I stopped and took a closeup pic of an autumn leave (only 2 inches away) with no need of lens changing. Then, some distant pics of buildings. Then, an amazing shot of my beautiful daughter with background defocus. And finally, some low light shots in the night club. All point and shoot and you'd swear the pics were from a high end professional SLR. Even using it in automatic mode produces remarkable photo quality. I can't wait to learn and try all of the features. Friends are already asking me how I took such nice photos with a point and shoot. The video quality is amazing as well.

            Best Uses

I have had this camera for less than a month, but I've used it everyday. It is always on hand and its capabilities are astounding in such a small package. The attached pic tells it all.

                • Sony program for pictures is TERRIBLE

                Best Uses

i had problems when I tried to download the pictures because i shoot in RAW with HDR and the format ARW is not recognized in any programs like adobe and the sony program is not a good program and that my computer does not recognize. After shooting in RAW I had to change everything to JPEG which is also not compatible with my MAC so I think that RAW is no good and does not work.

                  RX 100 Camera- Wow!

                  By Wcreativesandiego

                  from San Diego

                  Pros

                  • Image quality, video quality, size, features

                  Cons

                  • Missing features, HDMI ouput location, no charger

                  Best Uses

Based on reviews I went for this camera right away. The 1" CMOS, 20 megapixels, Zeiss lens and F1.8 speed, video quality, still image quality, size, overall creative features and the capability of this camera is amazing. I work in broadcast TV and we use many Sony products, including video cameras. That said we are moving to CMOS sensors to shoot more and more and we shoot quite a bit of DSLR. While the RX 100 won't match a DSLR in all applications, what it can do given it's small size and ease of use is astounding. And as a still camera it really is terrific. It is the one camera to have on you at all times. That said, here is what it still needs- Interval shooting capability. I seriously hope a firmware update is in our future so we can shoot interval images. 24p video shooting is also a must have going forward. The micro HDMI location means no tripod mounting and external screen monitoring at the same time (more of an issues for pros). Lastly no external battery charger- really Sony?- come on and roll it out for us. For the size and the price this camera is great. A few updates and new features would be a market killer. Hope Sony delivers.

                    from Los Angeles, CA

                    Pros

                    • Excellent image quality (but see my reservations below), compact size, great lens

                    Cons

                    • Some issues with image resolution at longer focal lengths, not great battery life

                    Best Uses

I have been waiting for a camera like this for a number of years. I mostly shoot DSLR, but I have bought several P&S cameras over the years (mostly Canon) and was never satisfied with them. The image quality that this camera gives from ISO 80 to 800 is nothing of outstanding (however, see some of my issues below). In auto mode, white-balance in images is outstanding, and it is easy to change to specific settings from either the Menu or Function buttons. The camera is small enough that it will fit comfortably in a pocket if you have baggy shorts or pants (people with tight-fit jeans, please don't try), even if it is inside a small camera poach. Now for the issues I have with this camera: 1) The lens is superb at its widest aperture (f/1.8) and lowest focal length (28mm). However, once the aperture gets smaller, especially past f/5.6, and at longer focal lengths, I find that small details in images can get quite mushy, even when shooting on a tripod with image stabilization off (to avoid having the sensor move during image capture). The lens at longer focal lengths is just not that great, and I try to avoid mid- to telephoto ranges. 2) Battery runs out too quickly, I get perhaps 200-300 shots out of it (which of course depends on how much one uses the LCD display). I also would prefer to charge the battery with a separate charger, like many have already mentioned. 3) The LCD display is excellent, giving bright saturated images. However, when its brightness is set to “Sunny Weather (and not Auto, which is the default), I have found that it consistently has a problem displaying saturated yellow colors, and also reds to a lesser extent. The yellows tend to bloom to an ugly off-green color, even when the colors in the JPEG file viewed on a color-calibrated monitor are perfectly fine (I have set my camera to shoot RAW+JPEG high rez). In “Auto mode, the files display properly.

Great Camera, best compact so far. However I do think it is utterly overprized (500 USD max.), the lack of an external battery charger is annoying and Shutter Speed of 1/4000th is desperately needed.
