Canon PowerShot D20 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera, Model D20

Outdoorsy, adventurous types need to look no further for a camera that can handle it all. The PowerShot D20 digital camera is waterproof to 33 feet, temperature-resistant from 14°F to 104°F, shockproof up to 5.0 feet, and equipped with a GPS tracker. Slim and sturdy with a highly visible color layout, its buttons are operable even with gloved hands. Spectacular image quality is ensured with the 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor for excellent low-light performance, and a 5x Optical Zoom with 28mm Wide-Angle Lens that brings excitement to your imaging. A single touch and you'll be shooting incredibly vivid 1080p Full HD Video with full zooming capability. Lots of optional accessories take you deeper underwater and more.

Features:

  • Waterproof, Shockproof and Freeze-resistant Design
Canon created the PowerShot D20 to be the tough, practical companion you'll want to bring on all your outdoor adventures, making it possible to capture truly impressive stills and video while doing what you love. Scuba dive, snorkel, paddle surf and more: the camera is waterproof all the way to 33 feet. Performance is fast and reliable in temperatures from 14° to 104°F, so it's safe for everything from winter sports to summer hiking. Shockproof up to 5.0 feet, the PowerShot D20 is also able to survive the accidental falls and bumps inherent to mountaineering, biking, and other outdoor activities
  • Canon HS SYSTEM
The Canon HS SYSTEM lets you take bright, clear photos in an even wider range of shooting situations. Beautiful low-light shots are possible with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The system is the result of two technologies brought together in PowerShot cameras: a high-sensitivity imaging sensor, which is able to capture more light; and the DIGIC Image Processor, which actively reduces noise with high-speed image processing. The 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor in the PowerShot D20 incorporates advanced light reception technology that enhances sensitivity. The DIGIC 4 Image Processor provides a major boost in noise reduction, expanding the usable ISO range to an amazing high of 3200. The Canon HS SYSTEM takes the frustration out of low-light shooting, delivering clear, blur-free images
  • Canon DIGIC 4 Image Processor
Canon DIGIC Image Processors have set the standard for functionality and performance since their groundbreaking introduction in 1999. With each successive generation, DIGIC processors have brought elevated performance and powerful new features to PowerShot digital cameras. The DIGIC 4 Image Processor has ushered in a new level of picture quality and accelerated processing, making possible features such as high-speed continuous shooting, Full HD video and Face Detection Self-timer
  • Canon Full HD Video Advantage
In addition to the Canon HS SYSTEM, the combination of the advanced CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor in the PowerShot D20 makes it possible to shoot crisp, clear high definition video. Imagine the fun and excitement of being able to shoot spectacular 1080p Full HD that you can later watch on your HDTV or download to your computer to share with family and friends. In addition to being able to shoot Full HD 1080p video at 24* frames per second, the PowerShot D20 can also shoot 720p HD video at 30** frames per second
    • *Actual frame rate is 23.976 fps
    • **Actual frame rate is 29.97 fps
  • Dedicated Movie Button, Wind filter feature and Optical Zoom for easy video capture
It's never been easier to shoot videos with a PowerShot digital camera. The PowerShot D20 has a dedicated movie button that lets you start and stop recording instantly. There is no need to go through layers of menus or operate switches or dials to switch to and from video recording mode. The camera is always ready to shoot stills or video whenever you want. The PowerShot D20 also incorporates an electronic wind filter, which suppresses wind noise that can muffle or distort the sound. And unlike less sophisticated point-and-shoot cameras, the PowerShot D20 lets you use the full range of optical zoom when you're shooting a video
  • HDTV playback via HDMI output and CEC
It's easy to enjoy and share the videos you shoot with the PowerShot D20. Simply connect its HDMI terminal to your HDTV using an HDMI cable. And because the PowerShot D20 supports HDMI-CEC technology, you'll be able to control the playback of your images and videos on any CEC-enabled HDTV using the TV's remote control. (CEC – Consumer Electronic Control – is part of the HDMI specification, enabling components in a system to communicate with one another.)
  • iFrame
With the PowerShot D20, you can also shoot video in the Apple® iFrame format, which is a computer-friendly standard that speeds up importing and editing of videos. It keeps file sizes small, making it more convenient to upload or e-mail high-quality videos. The iFrame format enjoys native support in compatible Mac and Windows video applications, making it unnecessary to perform time-consuming and often quality-degrading conversions
  • 5x Optical Zoom with 24mm Wide-Angle Lens
The PowerShot D20's optical brilliance is a perfect match for the outdoor adventures the camera's tough design supports. The 5x Optical Zoom (35mm equivalent: 28-140mm) (operable during video recording, too) brings wildlife and other difficult-to-approach subjects close. The 28mm Wide-Angle Lens makes all your shots more dynamic, and allows you to capture landscapes with their magisterial breadth intact
  • Pure Color System LCD
Many LCD screens on the market today use a striped arrangement of dots that works great for text and menus, but is not ideal for imagery. The PowerShot D20's PureColor System LCD uses a delta arrangement of dots, which works better for the organic nature of photos and videos, allowing you to review your images with exceptional clarity with rich, true-to-life color. The PureColor System LCD is also ultra-durable to withstand heavy use in all sorts of conditions. Just as importantly, it offers clarity you won't find elsewhere. Outdoors in sunlight, color is faithfully reproduced, while a high contrast ratio ensures that you'll see exactly what you're shooting from any viewing angle. This makes it easy to frame shots quickly in tight situations
  • Optical Image Stabilizer
Handheld shooting can often lead to camera shake, making photos and videos blurry. Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer is a sophisticated system that uses lens-shift technology to correct for unwanted camera movement. It makes handheld photography more practical, providing excellent image quality in many difficult shooting situations: outdoors at dusk, inside without a flash, and even at the telephoto end of the zoom range without a tripod. For photos, it enables shooting at slower shutter speeds, accommodating more low-light shooting situations than ever before without having to boost ISO sensitivity. With camera shake and vibration reduced, you get a sharper, steadier image. And because it is an optical system, there is none of the image degradation typical with electronic image stabilizers
  • GPS Technology
The PowerShot D20 digital camera is equipped with Global Positioning System (GPS)* technology. Now you can travel the world and let the camera automatically record the locations** and local times of your stills and videos. The camera can also use the GPS unit to automatically set the exact time. You can maximize the usefulness of the GPS feature by using the special bundled Map Utility software that makes it fun to share the memories of your world adventures. In addition to displaying all your photos' locations on a world map, the camera's GPS system can also track your route from photo to photo – a great way to visualize each trip! You can also create and share custom maps and personal mini-travel guides with friends and family members
  • Intelligent IS
The latest advance in Canon Optical Image Stabilization technology, Intelligent IS analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake correction method for the shooting situation. For stills, the system automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. When shooting video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes. With Intelligent IS, you can concentrate on image capture, letting the camera make the most effective IS settings to assure the steadiest possible image
    • Normal
Corrects for a wide range of camera movement when shooting stills
    • Panning
Panning motion is detected so that IS does not interfere with desired camera movement
    • Macro (Hybrid)
Corrects for shift-type camera shake, which typically occurs in macro (close-up) shooting
    • Dynamic
Effective for video shooting at wide-angle focal lengths, eliminating the unwanted shaking that typically occurs while walking
    • Powered
Compensates for hand movement when shooting video at the telephoto end of the zoom range, where camera shake is magnified
    • Tripod
When tripod use is detected, the Image Stabilizer is stopped because it is not needed

We've owned nearly a dozen different Canon digital cameras. This is one of the best we've owned in that it is so versatile. Going on family trips to the beach or hiking we always want to have a camera with us but don't want the weight of a DSLR or the fragility of our superzoom. We decided it was time to get a kid-proof camera that could withstand the sand. mud, much, and otherwise camera-unfriendly treatment our kids dish out. Our 3 and 4 year old use this camera without a problem (though the 3 year old has to be reminded to move her fingers out of the way of the lens, since it is so close to the outside edge). My wife and I always take pictures of our family, but now we can get the kids to take pictures of us - it's great. Picture quality is not good, but not great - don't expect the tonality of a DSLR or a higher-end point-and-shoot. This is a small sensor in a tight package and the results are typical for this category. The quality is good enough though, that coupled with it's versatility and small size, it will replace our digital elph. Wish the lens and rear-screen were gorilla glass, so case/cover was not necessary.

I've had this camera for a little over a year. It was fun while it lasted. The camera may not seal correctly thus causing the unit to be flooded with water. So much for the underwater capability. All of my cameras are Canons but I would think twice about purchasing this unit.

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera:

I am extremely disappointed with this camera. Our family loves to be in the water. I thought this camera would be perfect. Unfortunately it is not really waterproof. The first one I bought started leaking within a month. Canon sent me a new one. (which was great for customer service) But, now the second one let water in too. :( Obviously it isn't waterproof like they advertise. I can't say anything bad against Canon's customer service and their other products. I love my 7D. BUT, do not buy the Powershot D20!

not waterproof

By Anonymous

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera:

I purchased this camera and used it underwater twice without problem. The third time while snorkeling it filled with water and is now useless. I will send it to Canon but am not hopeful they will replace it as it is out of warranty. After reading the reviews, I think this model is a lemon. Maybe the D30 will be better? I love my other Canon cameras (five)!

This is my 3rd canon ...

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera:

This is my 3rd canon waterproof cameras and I loved the other two. The changes that have been made to this model are horrible and have reduced the quality of this camera to the point that i will be sending my recent purchase back. The change to the location of the strap attachment makes it impossible to set up a timed shot because the camera will no longer stand up without being propped up. And when propped the pucture is crooked due to the srap attachment not letting it sit evenly. The focus time is much longer and sometimes it took over 5 seconds to get the camera to focus in order to take a picture. The quality of pictures in low light is horrible even in auto mode. Very grainy and unfocused. And if any of the peple in the pictures moved at all the picture was blurred. The latch / cover over the battery compartment is also very flimsy compared to the last 2 models. I am so disappointed. I have raved about my last 2 cameras and the difference with this model is huge. Poor work canon.

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera:

Bought this camera in October for snorkeling in Mexico November for its waterproof, GPS, Movie and rugged capability. Sampled pictures prior to trip and liked the simplicity and feature set. However, on first use in water (all doors are sealed with a goof-proof snap-click lock), at a depth of 3 inches, it filled up with water and became unusable. Very disappointed as I love the canon line and buy all my cameras (SLR, DSLR, Powershot) from them. Camera has been sent out for repair. I am waiting for the results of their warranty investigation and will post the results. Had this camera for just over a month.

I love this Camera.it takes great pictures underwater and out.I use it regularly at our local YMCA with me and my 2 year old daughter. she took a survival swim class. And I have lots of videos and pictures of her swimming underwater.I have burned DVDs and they come out great. I wish I can upload a Videos of her doing her swim float Swim sequence. just so you can see what it looks like. I just keep it strapped to my arm with the float keeper. And it works out great. I wish I could buy another one just so if they stop making it I will have a backup. Because I love it so much.I have owned other brands of waterproof cameras and this one is the best hands down.

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera:

I was worried about this product when I read a bad review on it but I've had it for a while and it hasn't disappointed. The only things that I didn't like about this camera is there is no panorama button and the zoom isn't very good. I just got the standard camera without any additional zoom but I found when I was taking pictures of birds that were kind of far away that the zoom didn't cut it. It foucusss relatively well - I took a lot of pictures inside a moving bus and for the most part they turned out well

I'm buying another D20, after superb performance for two years. My bad-- I caused a leak in salt water. Two complaints, one serious: 1) slow to shoot, but aren't they all, and 2) NO LENS COVER! Hand it to a friend for a shot, or forget, and you've got a lens smudge. But, the camera goes anywhere I can, takes professional quality images for magazine use, does excellent video. Since they seem to be hard to get, I wonder if Canon is revamping. Anyone know, because I can't get an answer from Canon.

I 've probably used my DC10 every day for years. in and out of my creek, I captured silt laden steelhead trout videos and put this camera TO THE TEST. It has never had problems - unbelievable roughness I put it through, yet still takes very clear incredible shots. I noticed it appears a little slower on shots than it used to. Apparently discontinued, I wonder if the DC20 will live up to the dc10?

I've had this camera for a little over a year. It was fun while it lasted. The camera may not seal correctly thus causing the unit to be flooded with water. So much for the underwater capability. All of my cameras are Canons but I would think twice about purchasing this unit.

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Blue Digital Camera:

I had the d10 camera and was looking for a smaller version of the same camera. when I first looked at the d20 , I thought the specs said it would have a time exposure setting of up to 15 seconds. That was the one feature of my d10 that I used to capture auroras in AK. When I got the camera home I couldn't find the setting for long exposures. I called Canon's helpline and was told that the new models are not able to do time exposures. I was ready to take it back to the store. But I knew I had read somewhere that the camera could take 15 second time exposures. So I looked again on the Canon website and found that it did. I had to call Canon's helpline again. This time after about 10 trying minutes of being on hold, someone finally came on the line and talked me through the steps to setting up the camera for a time exposure. It is not so easy to figure out unless you have someone tell you how. You have to quickly move through the controls or you get stuck where you pause. This needs to be fixed Canon. I hope I can recall the needed procedure next time I want to use it. It is not user friendly.
