Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Camera Lens, Model 3554B002

Canon's newest "L" series lens is its first mid-telephoto macro lens to include Canon's sophisticated Image Stabilization. With the highest quality optics available, combined with near-silent Ultrasonic focusing and life-size close-up capabilities without an adapter, the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is simply unrivalled. This is the first lens on the market to incorporate Canon's new Hybrid Image Stabilization Technology. Hybrid IS effectively compensates for both angular and shift camera shake during close-up shooting. The lens was developed to expand users' photographing range and allow a wider range of users to easily enjoy macro photography.

SInce I started shooting with 1.6X crop sensor cameras in 2004, this has become my primary macro lens. Before that, on film (i.e., "full frame") cameras, I tended to use the 180/3.5 macro more. With the cameras I'm using now, the 100/2.8 gives me the right combo of adequate working distance from shy or downright nasty, sharp-toothed subjects, but not so far that depth of field is ultra shallow so that I need to stop down a lot and use a slow shutter speed, to the point it's no longer practical to handhold. The 100/2,8 also serves very well as a moderate telephoto lens for non-macro shooting, on any crop sensor SLR. The main reason this lens serves dual purposes so well is that it's got fast USM auto focus. If you are sure to use the limiter switch when shooting at non-macro distances, it's AF will not disappoint (the 180/3.5 does not focus as quickly at non-macro distances, so is less of a dual purpose lens, in my opinion). Now, I know a lot of people use the 100/2.8 for a portrait lens, too. If anything, in my opinoin it might be too darned sharp for that purpose. You won't win points with your mother in law if you take her portrait with this lens and so precisely show every line and wrinkle! Still, it can be used for portraits, no doubt about it. Just soften her images a little in post production, or risk the wrath of your mother in law! It also can optionally be fitted with a tripod mounting ring, very handy, but something that is not possible with some other macro lenses around this focal length. One thing I've never been able to figure out is why the optional lens hood is so large. You certainly don't have to worry about stray light finding it's down there to the front lens element, when you use it! It's a bit of an overkill, but better too much hood than too little, I suppose. Internal focus means this lens doesn't change length when focused, which is pretty amazing and convenient for a 1:1 macro lens. Earlier 1:1 macro lenses grew tremendously, with double heligoid designs. Some tripled in length, which moves the front elements awfully close to small subjects. While I would agree that I.S. is nice to have on any lens and would be somewhat useful on this lens when using it as a moderate telephoto, I have to point out that I.S. is of little real use at macro focusing distances. There is one stabilized macro lens on the market now, and even it's manufacturer doesn't claim very much assistance from stabilixation with tiny subjects at higher magnifications. So, personally I don't see much sense in adding I.S. (and complexity and cost) to this already excellent lens. The 100/2.8 Macro works extremely well with macro extension rings and the MT24EX Twinlite flash, too.

Having owned many Canon lenses (25+) over the past 30 years, this lens is by far the one that uses the lowest grade of materials at this price. The plastic is so thin that if you pinch the focus ring while manual focusing, it sticks! Even the lens barrel flexes! Very cheesy! Does it really deserve the 'L" series designation? You be the judge. If fact, when my lens arrived new in the box, the image stabilization elements were "floating" around loose inside the lens. I found out later that this is caused by removing the lens from a camera before the IS motors have shut off. QC problem from Canon? Did a lens to lens test against my superbly built 70-200 f/2.8L IS II lens, and found the zoom to be better at all settings except macro, of course. So, don't buy this if you don't need it much for macro. Consider the supurb 100mm f/2, at less than half the price if you just do portraits and such.

This is one of the best lenses Canon has ever made

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Camera Lens:

If not by far the best lenses Canon has ever made, definitely this is one of the bests that I have come across. I not only use this for macros, but also use this for portraits too. The sharpness is superb and the image stabilization is outstanding. I am just I'm Lovin' It.

One of the best?

By

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Camera Lens:

For those seeking a lens to help them capture images of objects as small as a dime, this is the lens for you! Here are a few bullet points: -It can focus on an object less than a foot away. -Objects as small as a Quarter (dollar) will fill the frame. -Very shallow depth of field even at small apertures (ex. f/22). We are talking fractions of a millimeter. -Very sharp images. -The lens is versatile as well able to stand in as a portrait lens in a pinch. -The Image Stabilizer will function properly when used vertically on a copy stand. The images are sharper when the IS is turned on. I have done tests. Make sure you read the manual and set it appropriately. I use this lens and the MP-E 65 mm f/2.8 1-5x almost exclusively. If you are trying to decide between the two, keep in mind that the MP-E is designed to shoot subject matter as large as a US Dime (1x) and as small as a grain of rice (5x). The MP-E also needs to be no further than a few inches away from the subject matter in most cases. Hope this helps answer some questions!

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Camera Lens:

Superb lens, all in it is outstanding. High quality images, impressive contrast, fast and accurate auto focus. Works as well as a macro as a multipurpose lens. The construccion is solid, following the Canon modern trend in their last lenses, it is not plastic, it is much more strong than a simple plastic. I love this lens.

The best native Canon macro.

By

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Camera Lens:

Well, I do agree with the rest of the reviews; It is a really good lens and you will get some really nice images using it! The connection between the 100 mm's and the 2.8 aperture gives you a fantastic range of possibilities. Using the 2.8 aperture you will get a depth of field that is extremely short. The auto focus is really fast and the settings on the lens works really well to speed up the focus process. The only thing I find a bit negative is that this lens does feel a bit cheap. Compared to the 50 mm f/1.2L USM this 100 mm feels like a plastic toy that would break at the smallest drop.

EF 100mm F/2.8L Macro is a great lens

By

from Virginia, United States

Comments about Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Camera Lens:

I bought this lens a couple of days ago. This is my first true macro lens. To get to know the lens I have taken dozens of test photos with my EOS 6D. I setup a tripod and took photos of some small nick-nacks with the 100mm F/2.8L and then attached the 24-105mm F/4L for comparison. The 100mm definitely blew me away with the detail and magnification at the closest distance that the 24-105mm is capable of. This is about 1.5 feet. I took photos of landscape objects about 60 feet away. Again comparing both lenses. The 100mm is at least the equal of the 24-105mm at those distances. In fact I prefer the 100mm because of its f/2.8 aperture. Its bokah is as good as advertised. The 100mm F/2.8L macro has become my base lens. I will be using the 24-100mm F/4L only when I need a wider field of view than the 100mm can provide. A great lens.

Quality glass, durable, and consistent top performance. Expensive until the return on investment is formed. It's not my go to lens but like my wife's jewelry ROI, my ROI begins in just owning an outstanding lens and then seeing the results from a few great photos which adds immeasurable satisfaction. Worth it.
