Panasonic Black Lumix FZ200 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera, Model DMCFZ200K

The essence of photography is being ready for any situation, and no compact digital camera achieves that better than the Panasonic Lumix FZ200. A constant aperture lens with an unprecedented zoom level, high sensitivity sensor and an extra-speedy operation help the Panasonic FZ200 rise to the occasion, regardless of your subject or environment.

Many cameras today boast superzoom lenses, but none as impressive as the Panasonic Lumix FZ200. With a range of 25-600mm, you can capture a wide scenic vista in one shot, and just as easily zoom in to capture the details in a far away bird. The FZ200 lens has a 14-element construction that includes aspherical and Extra Low Dispersion Lenses, which improve image quality by cutting down on optical aberrations. But most impressive about the Lumix FZ200's lens is its constant F2.8 aperture. Unlike any other lens in a compact digital camera, the fast lens of the FZ200 can be used at F2.8 up to 600mm, giving you extra light-gathering ability and the fastest shutter speeds possible even at long zoom lengths. With such an advanced, versatile lens, the Panasonic FZ200 is the perfect camera for everything from vacations to the sidelines of a youth soccer game.

Behind the lens of the Panasonic Lumix FZ200 is a 12.1 Megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor, powered by the Panasonic Venus Engine. This combo lets the FZ200 take vivid images in all lighting conditions, thanks to an ISO range of 100-6400 and an Intelligent Noise Reduction system. For scenes with contrasty lighting, the Lumix FZ200 can employ Intelligent HDR (High Dynamic Range), which takes multiple exposures and combines them for a perfectly exposed photo. The advanced Venus Engine gives the FZ200 pro-level operational speed as well. Flip the power switch and the FZ200 is ready to shoot in under a second. Carefully compose your images and snap them one at a time, or capture fast-moving action at 12 frames per second, in full resolution. For truly high-speed shooting, a special mode lets you take 60 photos per second at 3.5 megapixel resolution.

For all its advanced features, the Lumix FZ200 is also designed for total ease of use. If you prefer the feel of a traditional camera, compose your photos through the 1,312k-dot electronic viewfinder. Or find a creative angle for your photo with the 3-inch free-angle LCD screen, which tilts and rotates through a wide range of motion. A zoom lever is positioned for easy operation with your left hand, while you trigger the shutter with your right. And a wealth of creative modes ensures that even if you don't know the science of photography, your photos will still turn out great. With a Panasonic Lumix FZ200 digital camera at your side, you'll record all your life's moments in unprecedented clarity.

Features

  • FZ200 With An Amazing F2.8 Aperture Across Its Entire Zoom Range
The LUMIX FZ200 is Panasonic’s first digital compact camera to offer the incredible advantages of a full range F2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range ( [24X] 25mm-600mm, F2.8 - 35mm equivalent), a feature usually reserved for very high end professional lenses. The added light collecting ability the F2.8 provides to the FZ200 enables capturing moving subjects clearly with fast shutter speed, even from a distance. At the heart of this amazing lens is the high-quality of LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT optics.
  • Advanced MOS High Sensitivity Sensor
A newly developed 12.1-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor and high performance image processing LSI Venus Engine provide the LUMIX FZ200 with high speed response, high sensitivity recording and superb image quality.
  • Advanced Features Provide Extra Speed
Light Speed AF (auto focus) combines with the LUMIX FZ200’s ability to capture high speed burst shooting at 12 fps (frames per second) in full resolution and a quick start-up time of approximately .95 seconds, so users never miss even the most fleeting shooting opportunities. Furthermore, High Speed Video enables users to record fast-moving subjects at 120 fps (NTSC/HD)*2 or 240 fps (NTSC/VGA)*2.
  • Intelligent Zoom And Optical Image Stabilizer
The LUMIX FZ200’s powerful 24x optical zoom can be increased to 48x equivalent with the Intelligent Zoom function, and takes advantage of Intelligent Resolution technology to maintain picture quality. The camera’s POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) provides improved correction accuracy to minimize blur, even when zoomed, and Active Mode effectively suppresses handshake vibration in both still picture and video recording.
  • Anti Reflective Nano Surface Coating Panasonic’s Nano Surface Coating technology minimizes light reflection at the entire zoom range (380nm-780nm) resulting in super clear picture with a dramatic reduction of ghost and flare.
  • High Resolution Electronic View Finder A newly developed 0.2-inch EVF (Electronic View Finder) features a 1,312,000-dot equivalent high resolution, 100% field of view and minimum screen freeze.
  • New Ergonomics The LUMIX FZ200’s body has been designed as a full-fledged shooting style digital compact camera with ultimate controllability. The side lever has been redesigned and placed in a convenient location, allowing for smooth zooming control. Focus can also be easily changed with this lever, allowing users to concentrate on shutter operation and get the perfect photographic moment.
  • Greater Creative Control With 14 Filter Options The LUMIX FZ200’s Creative Control mode features 14 filter options including the newly added Soft Focus*3, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, One Point Color, Cross Process, Low Key, Toy Effect and Star Filter*3 in addition to the conventional Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, High Dynamic and Miniature Effect*4 modes. Photo Style is also available and allows users to create more artistic photographs with Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait and Custom options. With iA (Intelligent Auto) Plus, users can take advantage of popular iA functions – POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode, AF Tracking, Intelligent D-range Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Recognition, Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Handheld Night Shot, Intelligent HDR and Motion Deblur*5 – in addition to adjusting exposure compensation, white balance and defocusing background area for more flexible shooting control. For advanced photography users, the LUMIX FZ200 offers manual control mode allowing users to enjoy a more creative photography experience.
  • Full HD Video Recording At 60P The LUMIX FZ200 is able to produce not only stunning photos but also stunning full-HD in 1,920x1,080 60p videos in AVCHD Progressive (MPEG-4) and MP4*6 formats. The powerful 24x optical zoom with 2-step zoom and POWER O.I.S. is available in video recording and high-quality Dolby® Digital Stereo Creator offers highly realistic, powerful sound for videos. The stereo zoom microphone features a zoom noise reduction system and an Auto Wind Cut function to reduce background noise from wind. Additionally, Active Mode encourages active video recording at wide angle and the popular iA mode allows users to easily create motion images by simple pointing and hitting the record button. Creative Video mode allows users to set the shutter speed and aperture manually to bring special effects to videos, shoot fast moving objects and shooting subjects at various distances.
  • Additional Features
    • RAW and RAW+JPEG data recording option
    • 3.0-inch, free-angle 460,000-dot Intelligent LCD screen with AR Coating and wide viewing angle ensures comfortable monitoring in various shooting positions.

The FZ200 is an excellent advanced point & shoot - or "bridge" - camera, albeit one that may (UNfortunately) find a somewhat limited audience. Cons are a fairly high price tag, awkward menu system, and a reasonably steep leaning curve (required to take best advantage of the many features) that is not all all helped by the lack of a Printed Manaul. An entry level DSLR, with a kit lens (or even 2!), can now be had for about the same purchase price as the FZ200, and, of course, there are a number of other less expensive SuperZooms, featuring longer zoom ratios, higher MegaPixels, or both. And it can be a hard sell to convince the Casual Buyer that LESS Zoom Range, and a LOWER MP Count can still result in BETTER Photo quality. BUT: none of the above combine the feature set of the FZ200, with a (relatively) Fast F2.8 lens (across the entire zoom range!), a physical size & form factor that manages to be both significantly smaller than the typical DSLR, while still being Large Enough for a steady grip & comfortable handling. Also, Panasonic's "iA" setting does a remarkably good job for those times when one doesn't want to "think too much." This is our 4th digital camera, and second Advanced P&S: as much as we loved the earlier Advanced model, the FZ200 runs circles around it in every performance characteristic that comes to mind. (Ignoring User Manual, Menu system, and the odd times when a Slightly Smaller physical body has some advantage.) If you fit the target market [that is, if you do not want or cannot afford a decent DSLR, but are still looking for a quality piece of gear, capable of VG - Excellent photo, AND are willing to ignore the Numbers Hype...] the FZ200 comes highly recommended, both from personal experience, as well as from every "professional" Review seen to date.

The FZ200 is a nice all around camera. I carried it around all the time when I didn't feel like carrying my heavy Canon DSLR and it's very heavy L lenses, until I purchased the awesome LF1. The Leica lens with its 25-600mm, and constant, f2.8, aperture all the way from 25-600mm is the camera's best feature. It does a good job when shooting birds, or wildlife in general, or maybe spying on the neighbor while sunbathing for some folks! I attach a Canon video extender (1.4x) to the front of the lens for shooting birds, and that makes it even more powerful. I have captured some great videos of hummingbirds using this setup on a tripod from a distance. The ability to shoot video at 120 and 240 frames/second is a very nice feature as well, and I have used it while taking videos of hummingbirds. What I don't like is the sensor size, but I understand that it wouldn't be possible to package such a lens with a large sensor without making the camera considerably larger and heavier. The ability to shoot RAW is a wonderful feature, but the lack of firmware updates, and no pocket-size (printed) manual is quite annoying. A firmware update would be greatly appreciated so the camera can recognize newer SDXC (64GB) formats. I don't carry the FZ200 nowadays as much as I used to because I bought the Panasonic LF1, which fits nicely in a shirt pocket, has a larger sensor, WiFi, control ring, and an adequate Leica lens. I love the LF1. In addition to the above, the high-speed shooting capability of the FZ200 is a very helpful feature, especially for fast-moving objects. I love this feature. All in all, the FZ200 is a welcome addition to Panasonic's point-n-shoot fine cameras. I highly recommend it for those who are NOT looking for a shirt-pocket size camera. This camera does not fit in a shirt pocket, or even a larger pocket!

Comments about Panasonic Black Lumix FZ200 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I use it nearly always on automatic - some of the pictures seem too bright and camera seems to work better in slightly dimmer light situations. Reticulating screen and the screen view are excellent.

Comments about Panasonic Black Lumix FZ200 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

Upgraded from a Lumix FZ150 and the f/2.8 lens is a real plus. Light weight, easy to carry and uses the same battery as my Lumix G5. So it's a very capable backup to the G5 and very useful when I don't want to change lens or carry more gear. The current Panasonic price of $249 is a steal in my book.

Comments about Panasonic Black Lumix FZ200 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I wanted to buy a camera to substitute my old megazoom, and I picked the FZ200 over some beginners DSLR, and I am very happy with my decision. The camera is light with a good feel in the hand, and has solid build. The swivel LCD screen has been very handy in getting some angled shots, though I'm old-school using the eye viewfinder regularly. As far as pictures, the quality is great, especially in low-light. I highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants a camera that has the ease of a p&s with the features of a DSLR.

Excellent quality pictures, the extended zoom is an awesome feature, very high quality construction. Pocket cameras and cell phone cameras are handy, but they lack the capabilities of the Lumix FZ-200. It is a great all around camera.

I've owned many cameras from just about all manufactures and this camera is by far my favorite. Set it on auto and start shooting great pictures. I have shot several thousands of photos and movies with this camera and have yet to get a bad one. Having the light gathering on full telephoto is amazing. There is only one improvement I would like to see and that is the speed of the auto focus when going into the zoom range. Sometimes it takes a couple of seconds. I can live with that for all the other benefits of the camera. You still have all the manual operations you can do but don't waste your time. Auto will produce everything you want except for special effects photos. Great camera at a great price.

I bought the FZ200 to replace my FZ150, primarily to get the f2.8 lens, but many other features made it worthwhile. One of my frustrations has been trying to take photos of things in nature, like spiderwebs, that just never focus automatically. The FZ200's manual focus function is much nicer than was on the FZ150, making those photos much easier. I've also enjoyed the larger zoom that it has. Overall, this is a great camera to take traveling or on walks - not very heavy and no bag of lenses are necessary. My wife has had no trouble using it for photos of her knitting, which is also great.

I have LOVED this camera! I recently upgraded to the FZ1000 staying with Panasonic Lumix. I like that I can go from 1cm macro to mountains in the distance with the 25-600 mm Leica lens all with constant 2.8 aperture for those great bokeh backgrounds. I like I can use auto or manual with the PASM settings. I never again want to own a camera without the fully articulated LCD. It makes it so much easier to go low or high handheld or on a tripod. I like and use the 12 fPS burst; the ability to screw on filters; the size and weight are good. I love that it has an LCD and a viewfinder that isn't a snap on extra using the hot shoe. I like having video there when I want it. I like how long the battery last. If I had anything to change and it's not much I wish it was less noisy at high iso's and that the timer had a few more options so I didn't need to use a wireless remote to be in family pics but all in all this is a great camera to always have with you without the bulk of carrying around lots of weight or extra lenses.

My background is 35mm Nikon for 30+ years. I finally got tired of carrying all the heavy glass around, and digital made so much sense. I've had Panasonic's FZ-28, FZ-35 and now the FZ-200. I simply cannot imagine a camera better suited to my needs. A professional should go for a DSLR, but as an advanced amateur (occasional paying jobs, but 95% shooting for personal use) who travels a lot (across many continents) this camera is perfect. Small (for all of its capabilities), dependable (any shots I've missed have been my fault), and f2.8 all the way through the very long lens. Incredible! There are later models which I'm sure are fine as well, but i have no use at this time for 4K HD video, which seems to be the major change. The hi-def video on this camera has served me perfectly on my 55-inch screen (also Panasonic, by the way). And longer zooms are probably great, but I'm mostly a handheld sort of shooter, so I've probably reached my limit with this one. Shop around, compare prices, determine what you need, but know that this constant day-to-day user with a lot of experience thinks that this camera is the best buy I have ever made in photo equipment. Good shooting! FWIW. I bought third party replacement batteries and they only had half the life of the the Panasonic brand batteries. Cost more, but the Panasonic batteries are worth the extra $$$ Also, Graham Houghton on Youtube has some really excellent tutorials on using this camera. Must see! Extremely useful.
