I researched refrigerators for over a year & saved up for the one I wanted. GE or Whirlpool? Whirlpool had every feature I was looking for plus some, so I chose the Whirlpool® 29 cu. ft. French Door Refrigerator and the unit was delivered in Jan '13. I'm beginning to regret my choice. I love the look, the space and the features, but... I noticed what I call "black ice" growing out of the seam on the rear wall where the ice maker meets the rear wall of the unit. I touched it and it was cold. I have always had condensation drips from the front of the ice maker at the door, but I could live with that. I contacted service and the tech came out and said my unit was not installed properly. The door were not aligned correctly, letting warm air in, thus condensation and "black ice. He made the door adjustments and told me to turn the unit off, leave the doors open for 8 hours and I should be good to go. Two weeks later, black ice is back, service is scheduled, again. Also, over time I began to notice the volume of noise the unit made. A refrigerator is one appliance we really don't hear, standing guard protecting our food silently in the background. My Whirlpool takes front & center stage telling everyone: "I'M MAKING ICE! or I'M RUNNING THE COMPRESSOR! I WANT TO BE NOTICED! This is the loudest refrigerator I've ever owned. I’m beginning to rethink my choice.

Loud ice and water
from Placentia, CA, United States
Water and ice are a little loud! We can live with that, I guess!!

Have had this 3 months and it has changed my habits completely. The water dispenser measures the quantity dispensed and you do not have to stand there and push on it while it works. I am drinking 3 times more the water per day than I ever could before. Space inside is so well engineered it seems much bigger than the previous one that was the same size. Would buy this again and would recommend it to anyone.
Ice maker/Water could be improved and door can be easily left open
from Austin, TX, United States
Overall, I am pretty happy with this refrigerator. The temperature seems to stay pretty consistent throughout and the space is easily organized with the adjustable shelving. My only complaints come from the ice maker/water lever response and positioning of the water spout, as well as how the left door can be left ajar easily without any warning sounding. With the ice maker/water lever, it appear to take a little more effort than I would like for the lever to engage to release water and ice. I know, your thinking, "How hard could it be to use the ice maker... you just push the cup in and it should put ice in the cup." Well, what I have found is that with this model it is where you position the top of the cup that makes all the difference on the response. The lever activates pretty high up, close to the ice shoot, so the easiest cups to fill are ones that are pretty tall. With shorter, wider cups, your fingers wrapped around the cup, can get in the way. If the area to engage the lever was a little lower, it would probably be easier. As for the position of the water spout, this may also have something to do with the lever position as well. I know, again, it shouldn't be so hard to put water in the cup... What I have found is that depending on how you have the cup positioned, and how wide the cup is, the water may or may not make it into the cup. The spout is positioned in front of the ice shoot, so the water will dispense more towards the front of your cup. Since the cup top needs to be tipped back to engage the lever, you don't always get it lined up for the water properly. Again, if the lever were a little lower to engage, this could probably be avoided. My final complaint about the way the doors close, I think stems from the latch panel that secures the left door and allows you to open each door independently, without having to open and close them in any order. This is a great feature because you don't have to treat your refrigerator like a Rubik's cube to get it opened and closed, but in order to secure the door, there is a latch panel that slides into place behind the right door. This panel does not always position correctly, making it very easy to leave the door ajar and the sensor doesn't trigger an alarm, because it thinks it's closed. I think that if the sensor were a little more sensitive or the door slid closed a little easier this could be easily fixed. It doesn't require a great amount of force, but you can't just let it close on it's own either.

This was exactly what we were looking for in a fridge. My fiance really wanted the in door ice maker which was a big reason we went with whirlpool. I like the design and there is a ton of space inside, we never have it full.

Nothing but trouble

Have had the fridge for just over a year. & service calls for ice in the back of the upper left corner. Now the ice maker has stopped working and when opening the freezer drawer the noise is awful. Waiting on repair number 8 that they said would take 3 hours to perform.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Water and Ice... Very Nice
from Grand Forks, BC, Canada
What we noticed first was the programmable water dispenser. For instance, you can program the fridge to dispense 11 ounces into your glass, put toast into the toaster then come back and grab your water. Handy for adding specific amounts of water for recipes etc. no measuring cup required! We ended up removing the built in water filter since we have our drinking water filtered to the fridge and kitchen sink already. We had our eye on this french door unit before we started our renovations. To accommodate this fridge seamlessly with the counters and cabinets we extended the wall behind the fridge another 6 inches. Now we need to organize the fridge more efficiently, it's so huge that we just end up putting items in without thinking then we don't know which door to open to find what we need. The bottom freezer holds a lot of food as well. My beer fridge is now obsolete as the extra fridge and freezer volume takes care of additional item stored previously. I guess I'll have to exercise more since my usual walk is now shorter!

We have had this Whirpool product for about two months now and couldn't be more pleased. We replaced all our appliances with Whirlpool products and have been extremely pleased this far.
