Canon PowerShot SX50 HS 12.1 Megapixel Black Digital Camera, Model SX50BK

Imagine getting right down on the field to capture sports action, zeroing in on your child's expression on a crowded stage, and recording elusive wildlife shots. All this and more is possible with the PowerShot SX50 HS offering the world's first 50x Optical Zoom lens* in a compact digital camera, which goes all the way from a wide-angle 24mm to 1200mm (35mm equivalent) to capture any shot you choose. The PowerShot SX50 HS doesn't just get you up close to the action, it delivers spectacular image quality to every shot. The Canon HS SYSTEM, a combination of a 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 Image Processor, achieves beautiful images up to ISO 6400. Record your memorable moments in incredibly lifelike 1080p Full HD video with stereo sound and High Speed AF ensures you'll capture all the action with faster focusing speed and reduced shooting lag time. The PowerShot SX50 HS also features the additional benefit of Zoom Framing Assist Seek and Lock functions, for easy tracking of and keeping the subject centered in the frame until you capture the image. With powerful technologies that add convenience and advanced capabilities, PowerShot SX50 HS can help you capture more of life every day.

Features:

  • World's first 50x Optical Zoom (24–1200mm) and 24mm Wide-Angle lens* with Optical Image Stabilizer delivers magnificent images whether you are up close or far away
Experience the difference that the ultra-zooming power of the PowerShot SX50 HS's 24mm Wide-Angle 50x Optical Zoom lens can make on your everyday shooting. The extraordinary focal length of 4.3–215.0mm (35mm film equivalent: 24–1200mm) lets you capture everything from wide-angle shots to super-telephoto shots from wherever you are, while every shot exhibits the unique quality inherent to Canon optics. You'll easily reach into sporting events from up in the bleachers, catch beautiful candid shots of your children without disrupting the scene, and achieve wildlife and landscape photography you never thought possible. Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer ensures that whether up close or far away, every shot is clear and steady
  • Zoom Framing Assist
It's easy to track and capture subjects while using the extreme telephoto on the PowerShot SX50 HS. Use the Zoom Framing Assist Seek function to locate and track your subjects even a long distance away; by simply pressing a button, this function remembers your previous zoom position, zooms out to let you locate your subject, and zooms right back into the saved position when you release the button. And with the Zoom Framing Assist Lock, the camera will lock onto and automatically track a subject, intelligently keeping them in the center of the frame until you're ready to capture the perfect close-up shot
  • 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor
The PowerShot SX50 HS employs a Canon 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, which delivers state-of-the-art imaging performance and is optimized for use in compact cameras. Utilizing a sophisticated light-capturing design, it provides high sensitivity for improved high ISO capture with reduced noise. It is also a high-speed design, capable of rapidly capturing and moving image data to the processor, enabling faster continuous shooting and faster autofocus
  • Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor
The latest-generation Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor works with the PowerShot SX50 HS's image sensor to bring phenomenal increases in processing speed and power, delivering incredible detail in more situations, without the need for artificial light sources. Improved noise reduction produces clearer images when shooting in low light at high ISO speeds. The faster processing speed results in faster continuous shooting capability while maintaining full image quality. With the power of the DIGIC 5 Image Processor, the PowerShot SX50 HS can achieve higher ISO sensitivity and even perform advanced functions like lens correction, special scene modes and much more
  • Canon HS SYSTEM for exceptional low-light performance up to ISO 6400
The PowerShot SX50 HS gives you the power to create images with spectacular depth, detail and emotional resonance. The 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor works in concert with Canon's latest-generation DIGIC 5 Image Processor to create the renowned Canon HS SYSTEM. With the Canon HS SYSTEM, you'll experience excellent tracking performance even in low light, and achieve gorgeous still image quality even at high ISO speeds all the way up to ISO 6400; beautiful low-light shots are possible with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The Canon HS SYSTEM lets you use higher shutter speeds to capture clearer images with reduced noise and blur in a variety of situations for incredible photos and even when shooting video
  • Capture stunning 1080p Full HD video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button; zoom while shooting and play back videos on an HDTV via the HDMI output
Simply touch the dedicated movie button, now conveniently embedded in the PowerShot SX50 HS's thumb pad, to start recording video in 1080p Full HD that is breathtakingly vivid and realistic. You're free to use the full range of the zoom in movie mode, and sound is recorded in stereo. HDMI output allows you to view and share your video on an HDTV immediately, simply by connecting the camera to the TV with an optional HDMI cable
  • High Speed AF greatly improves focus speed and High-Speed Burst HQ allows for continuous capture at a maximum of 10 frames* while maintaining superb image quality
The PowerShot SX50 HS is equipped with Canon's latest advancement in AF technology: High Speed AF. The result of several improved technologies, High Speed AF delivers significantly faster focus speed of 0.19 seconds and a dramatically reduced shooting lag time of only 0.25 seconds, for a super-responsive shooting experience that lets you capture every great shot as it happens. The technology also powers the camera's new High-Speed Burst HQ, with continuous capture at a maximum speed of approximately 13 fps. Moreover, images captured in High-Speed Burst HQ maintain the camera's superb image quality
  • Intelligent IS automatically chooses from six different modes to optimize image stabilization for the shooting condition
It's easy to capture clear, steady images with the PowerShot SX50 HS, even in low light without using a tripod. That's because the camera is equipped with Canon's innovative Intelligent IS. The system analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake correction method for the shooting situation – allowing you to focus on framing and capturing your shot. For stills, the system automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. When shooting video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes. Dynamic IS has been enhanced to provide better performance than ever before, now compensating for rotational movement centered on the optical axis in addition to horizontal tilt and vertical pitch, for beautifully clear and steady video
    • Normal
Corrects for a wide range of camera movement when shooting stills
    • Panning
Panning motion is detected so that IS does not interfere with desired camera movement
    • Hybrid
Corrects for shift-type camera shake, which typically occurs in macro (close-up) shooting
    • Dynamic
Effective for video shooting at wide-angle focal lengths, eliminating the unwanted shaking that typically occurs while walking
    • Powered
Compensates for hand movement when shooting video at the telephoto end of the zoom range, where camera shake is magnified
    • Tripod
When tripod use is detected, the Image Stabilizer is stopped because it is not needed
  • Bright 2.8-inch Vari-angle LCD with 461,000 dots for shooting at a variety of angles, plus an Electronic Viewfinder
The PowerShot SX50 HS gives you lots of ways to frame a great shot. The bright 2.8-inch Vari-angle LCD has excellent resolution (approximately 461,000 dots), and flips out and swivels/rotates for shooting at unusual angles, even letting you capture perfectly framed self-portraits. The camera also has an Electronic Viewfinder to give you the classic photographic experience
  • Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper camera settings based on 58 predefined shooting situations and the Face ID function adjusts focus and exposure priority based on pre-registered faces
In Smart AUTO, the PowerShot SX50 HS analyzes various factors in the scene's background and subject, then selects optimal camera settings based on predefined shooting situations to achieve the best possible image quality. The Smart AUTO function on PowerShot SX50 HS includes an astonishing 58 predefined shooting situations, giving you spectacular image quality in virtually any photographic conditions you'll encounter. Canon's futuristic Face ID feature allows you to register up to 12 faces on your camera, then gives those faces priority over others with regard to focus and exposure. As a result, even in group scenes, you'll always get great shots of your children, family and friends

This a great all in one carry around camera. I also own the older SX1 and SX40HS, and this camera improves on both. The SX1 has a 35mm equivalent 24-560mm lens, has great image quality, great video, and shoots RAW files, but the downfall in my view was AA batteries which had a very short useful life (relative to a Lithium Ion battery) and always seemed to die at the wrong moment. There was no battery charge indicator other than an "idiot" light that would flash as the battery died. Then a few versions later came the SX40HS. Great camera, battery charge indicator, Lithium Ion battery, 35mm equivalent 24-840mm lens, great image quality, great features, great video... but no RAW. Now we have this little gem the SX50HS which in my view finally completes the picture for the perfect carry around camera with an even longer lens range, battery charge indicator, Lithium Ion battery with remarkable life, great image quality, great video, great features and shoots RAW files! This camera boasts remarkable image quality from a very small chip. Does it compare to the image quality I get from my 1DS Mark III or 5D Mark III? No. Did I expect it to? No. But for the all the amazing features packed into this camera the bottom line for me is that there are many great images that HAVE been captured because of the portability and range of this camera which might have been missed otherwise, as I don't regularly tote around the 20 - 30 pounds of gear that would be needed to cover this lens range on my full frame DSLRs.

I have a Canon PowerShot S3IS that far exceeds the quality I see in the PowerShot SX50 HS. I find the auto focus leaves a lot to be desired. The diopter adjustment for the viewfinder is almost impossible to turn and the focus through the eyepiece is not clear at all. And some of the built in features, like the slight pause between digital zoom and optical zoom is quite irritating. I do admit that image quality is very good, and I like the 1080p resolution in my videos. I don't see much difference between the 1080p on this camera vs the 720p on my Canon EOS Rebel T3 DSLR. I admit there are some features on this camera that I like, such as the slow motion video and the High Speed Burst HQ, so at this time I intend continuing experiment with this camera. But if I had known what I know now I would not have purchased this camera. On the brighter side, the only cameras I have and will continue to own are Canon!

Great experence-Love the camera

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

Just purchased a Power Shot SX50HS November 9, 2014. Camera works beautifully. Much better pictures than my last two cameras. Easy to use and hold. Even though there were negative complaints about the power button and self-timer, I have not experienced any negative features. Very glad I read all the reviews but the image quality comments really sealed the deal.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

Date:November 14, 2014 I use the camera to identify and document birds and find it ideal for that purpose. The photos are crisp without too much fuss. The automatic settings give excellent results and shutter speed is fast enough for most condiitions. It is perfect for someone who doesn't want to have to mess with a lot of settings.

Run and buy this camera, it's fantastic

By Patty

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

I bought this camera last April 2013, I also purchased the polarizing filters, 64GB 10 memory card and remote release & secure shoulder harness . This camera took exceptionally beautiful shots in very low light in Venice and crisp shots inside the Vatican. It's extremely quick to capture clear shots from a busy street, without getting traffic into the image. Rarely need a flash. The button is quick, responsive & smooth, I rarely get blurred photos. I can take multiple photos without degrading consecutive shots. The telephoto lens experience proved to render breathtaking shots of the lagoon in Venice. Macro are good too, Camera is VERSATILE. I have more than 5500 photos in less than 1 yr. For my first year as a member in a Camera Club, I won award ribbons for 95% of my images in judged competitions, They moved me up to the next level because of the quality of my images. Although they call this a bridge camera, it's great for any level of expertise.

Missing pieces

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

I would like to review the camera performance, but I can't do that until I (1) go back to the store and buy a memory card, and (2) make another to trip to the store to buy the appropriate USB cable as the 5 that I have are not compatible. Come on Canon you can't put these in the box?

    Flash so Strong

    By Kathy

    from Green Bay, WI

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

I love this camera as it takes excellent pictures outside and of landscape photos which I do take often. For taking photos outside, without the need of a flash, the pics are beautiful, clear and brilliant. My only real issue with this camera is that the built in flash seems quite strong to me and many up close pictures turn out white when the flash is used. Because of my hobby of rock collecting in Lake Superior and my job of an illustrator and artist, I take many up close pictures of my artwork and rocks. I like them to be bright but not white. I'm also not a fan of the fact that you need to open the flash yourself to use the flash, that it isn;t an automatic open. I also have issues with the fact that it won't take a second picture until I shut the flash and reopen it. This camera has been very difficult for me to use as I'm not a professional photographer. I switched from another brand which took brilliant pictures and the close up pics with the flash worked great. To my sadness the flash went out in my old camera and therefore I needed a new camera. This camera also has so many settings and settings within settings that it's a bit difficult to use for me, as I'm not a professional photographer and wanted a wonderful camera to always work on the "Auto" setting. I'm sure I could fix the flash issue if I used some manual settings and am constantly looking up definitions of "ISO" and "Apeture". I'm sure this is a great camera for the pro but for an ordinary person, it's a bit much. Also this camera is a heavier than I would have liked, much heavier than my older one. I travel around hiking with it on me, taking pics and after awhile, it gets quite heavy and bulky in it's case. All in all, it is a great camera. I haven't used the movie feature yet but I'm sure it is wonderful also. My real issue is the flash being so strong. I have noticed that there is a space for an external flash which I also noticed before purchasing it. I'm guessing that this is the way to go but after purchasing the camera, extra battery, and accessories, the last thing I thought I'd need was an external flash. Very disappointing that I may now need an external flash. Funny thing is, the camera bag that is for this camera has a slot for an external flash ... :)

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

I love this camera overall and have recommended to several of my friends who have asked what camera I use because they really like the quality of my pictures.. However, this is the second time I have had problems with the lens not working (Lens error).properly. The first time it happened with the sx 40HS and now again with sx50 HS. I'm hoping this can get resolved right away.

    Cons

    • position of timer and record buttons

    Best Uses

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

The main features I look for in a camera are a viewfinder, a long zoom, a 3:2 setting and good low-light results. I have used this camera for a year, and I am blown away by the images it produces. At least a dozen friends have purchased this camera after seeing my prints--especially the first shot of the Super Moon. Three friends have ordered this model in the last three weeks because of my enthusiasm. I deducted a star because of the positioning of the timer and record buttons. They are directly under the thumb when the camera is gripped properly, and it is very inconvenient to have to disengage the timer when trying to take a regular shot. I'm considering buying another one to have as a back-up since none of the new models in this email have an eye-piece. I have been a camera entusiast for 65 years, and this is my first Canon.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Black Digital Camera:

This is my favorite camera I've ever owned. I took over 2000 pictures on a lengthy Western USA trip and had very few bad ones. A lot of pictures were made though the car windows. I had a lot of fun taking all kinds of shots with the huge zoom. Pictures of the moon look like they came from NASA. With the neck strap and the LCD turned to face upwards the camera functions a lot like a twin lens reflex with a waist level viewfinder. It's a great way to get steady shots. My ONLY complaint is that I have a hard time holding the camera without mistakenly pushing a button. My fix has been to try to keep my thumb in the LCD cavity (I rarely use the EVF).

The major improvement in the SX50 are: photo quality, Improved Macro capability, RAW function was added, Zoom range improved. The SX50 replaces the SX40 after 172,000 images/actuation. This camera supplements my EOS 6D.
