I love my slingbox. I use it all the time on my phone and my ipad. The only thing that is missing is the ability to stream it to another TV well. I currently stream it to my ipad and then use mirroring on Apply TV, but if there was an app for Apple TV that made it full screen would be so much better.

Tested this out to watch the first round of the college football playoffs at a vacation home on a large screen TV with consistent dropouts despite excellent broadband at the sending and receiving locations. An alternative streaming service tested at the same time worked much more reliably. I am showing my displeasure by returning this substandard product and urge others dissatisfied to do the same. At the receiving end I had a new Vizio 4K HD and a Roku3 box that seems to work perfectly and had the Slingbox app installed. Test #1: I downloaded the Slingbox app on my phone ($14.99!) so the Roku app could receive the Slingbox broadcast via my wireless router. (Note, once the Roku is connected by the phone, the phone can be switched off since the streaming function then goes directly though the Roku.) Results: would work about 5 minutes before losing the signal and would have to restart the process. This was definitely the worst. My wife was not happy. Luckily I realized within an hour that this was hopeless and was able to get an app refund on Google Play. A reviewer on Amazon said the refund limit was 2 hours so I only downloaded it when I was ready to go. Test#2: Same as Test#1 except I used my Android tablet instead. Results were the same. Test#3: I used my Windows 8 laptop to go to slingbox.com and watch my broadcast. Then I set up my TV to function as a wireless display (i.e. Miracast/WiDi) which works pretty well. This worked better than Tests #1 and #2 but it lost the connection enough that it wasn't worth it to try to pursue it any longer. Again the wife was not happy. Test#4: Similar to Test#3 except I signed on to WatchESPN (using my Comcast account). This definitely worked the best and the connection was solid. However, instead of commercials ESPN plays a single electronic composition in a mind numbing loop. Again the wife was not happy (after a while) but at least I was able to mute! Bottom line is that it is a great idea but the implementation is not reliable enough. My aim was to watch my expensive home cable subscription at the vacation place so I wouldn't have to pay for another cable subscription that I was only going to use for a few weeks each year. So far, mission not accomplished.

Comments about Sling Media Slingbox 500 Media Player:
I am a huge soccer fan, When Champions League is on you want to see all the games. Slingbox makes this possible. I have one game on my TV, one on my Phone, and can have on on the Ipad as well. MY job takes me out of town weekly and having a slingbox with me allows me to watch all my stuff and take full advantage of my cable anywhere!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great Product, but.......

Been using the 500 for the better part of 3 years. Upgraded my laptop to Win 10 and worked great up until a few weeks ago. Can log in and everything is going great. But, 20 secs in, the browser crashes. Changed browser and still the same thing. Tried another browser, same thing. So, the only way to watch is via an iPad or iPhone right now. Was able to finally get the laptop to work but only by downloading Slingplayer from the Win store. Not ideal.
unreliable luxury aint a luxury

Such a shame. Great idea. When it works it is gold, but too often there are tech glitches. I would say over the last year 2 out of 3 times I have tried to use it there have been serious glitches including no sound, random blackouts, freezes, and a glitchy programming leading to it thinking no one is watching after thirty seconds. all of this makes this a very frustrating product which i cant recommend.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
Great product for anyone who travels
from Lake Forest, IL and Puerto Vallarta Mx.
I think the picture and sound we get at our vacation home is as good as if I were sitting in my living room. Easy to access live broadcasts and recordings -- and even to set up new recordings while away. We now see all the local sports and news events we'd miss otherwise.

We live in TX. Our son attending law school in CA uses the sling box to follow the Astros, Texans, and Rockets.
Excellent on the go TV viewing
I own the Slingbox Pro prior and upgraded to the 500. I was blown away by the features specifically the wireless connection as there's no more hassle of connecting an ethernet cable from the box to the router but the option is still available. Just got wireless cable and the 500 mates with it beautifully as I don't have to bother physically connecting a cable connector to the rear of the unit. The new Slingplayer is awesome as it has more controls to manipulate the 500. I can access the 500 on my Android phone and tablets, iPad, and on Windows tablet/laptop/desktop and getting the program on the Microsoft Store which is free by the way. I like to watch local programs when I'm travelling and when away from home. I have unlimited data on my cell phone and that's a plus. After the firmware update the setup was a breeze. There is a mention of the possibility of not being able to view programs using the HDMI cable exclusively because of protection rights but I connected mines thru aux cables instead.
Slick, simple, complete

I was fretting about paying for an extra TV service at our second home. This is the perfect solution. Fantastic hardware and the software setup had me up in less than 20 minutes. Fyi, I used the HDMI connections and have CAT5 ethernet, so I have very high quality on the input. So far, although this wasn't my primary use case, it is amazing to watch TV from our android phones and tablet. I can't wait for our upcoming trip to our second home to see how well it works 3,000 miles away, with a fast internect connection on the other end as well. Someday, though, I hope all we pay for is bandwidth - for phones, internet, TV without having to pay for these silly huge packages where we only watch 6-8 channels. The business model has to change, but for now the Slingbox is just what the doctor ordored.
VERY EASY setup, couldn't have been simplier!!!

I bought the Slingbox 500 and was amazed how easy it was to set up compared to problems I've had over the years with my old Slingbox Pro. I loved the on screen set up guide once all of the connections were made and the full HDMI connections are great for remote viewing quality.

abig step bacward from sling
By larry from pa
i bought this to replace a dead pro-hd. sorry to say this is a step backward from sling, not a step forward. needed a new sling to watch sling on my fire tv. but this product is clunky to setup, does not have manual ip setup, and genrally is not very fluid in gui and function. best bet is to go to a m1. I am also dismayed in the fact that the optical audio was remove, so I am not ble to stream 5.1 anymore. the hdmi is only usefull for a hdmi attaced dvd player or laptop, not for tv
