Canon PowerShot G15 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera, Model G15

Reaching new heights in speed, agility and creative possibilities, the PowerShot G15 gives photographers plenty of reasons to be delighted over. The excitement starts with the newly developed 5x Optical Zoom with 28mm Wide-Angle, bright f/1.8 (W) – f/2.8 (T) lens that performs beautifully across the entire zoom range, even in low light, and can create dramatic soft backgrounds with shallow depth-of-field. Additional great features for the PowerShot G15 include Canon's HS SYSTEM, which combines a High-Sensitivity 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor with the DIGIC 5 Image Processor for ultra-fast performance and phenomenal image quality, a new dual axis electronic level, plus upgraded video capture in 1080p Full HD with stereo sound. The PowerShot G15 is designed to inspire and support your advanced creativity with 12-bit multi aspect RAW+JPEG just like in Canon's EOS line of DSLR cameras, new High Speed AF which dramatically reduces lag time when shooting, and the ability to add optional Speedlite flashes and a Tele-Converter Lens. When you're ready to take the next step in your photographic journey, PowerShot G15 is ready to get you there.

Features:

  • Newly developed 5x Optical Zoom (28mm–140mm) and a bright f/1.8 (W) – f/2.8 (T) lens allows you to capture more in your frame. It is also ideal for low-light conditions or using shallow depth-of-field for dramatic, soft backgrounds
Newly engineered specifically for the PowerShot G15, the camera's 28mm Wide-Angle 5x Optical Zoom lens with a focal length of 6.1–30.5mm (35mm film equivalent: 28–140mm) achieves f/1.8–f/2.8, making it one of the camera's most exciting features. The Wide-Angle lens gives your images a distinctive sweep and grandeur, capturing landscapes, cityscapes, tall buildings and wide groups of people with ease. The large f/1.8–2.8 aperture allows you to achieve shallow depth-of-field for creating portraits with beautiful, soft background blur, and incomparable Canon optical technology delivers a high performance lens enabling incredible images, even in low light
  • 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor
The PowerShot G15 employs a Canon 12.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor, which delivers state-of-the-art imaging performance and is optimized for use in compact cameras. Utilizing a sophisticated light-capturing design, it provides high sensitivity for improved high ISO capture with reduced noise. It is also a high-speed design, capable of rapidly capturing and moving image data to the processor, enabling faster continuous shooting and faster autofocus
  • Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor
The latest-generation Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor works with the PowerShot G15's image sensor to bring phenomenal increases in processing speed and power, delivering incredible detail in more situations, without the need for artificial light sources. Improved noise reduction produces clearer images when shooting in low light at high ISO speeds up to ISO 12800. The faster processing speed results in faster continuous shooting capability while maintaining full image quality. With the power of the DIGIC 5 Image Processor, the PowerShot G15 can achieve higher ISO sensitivity and even perform advanced functions like lens correction, special scene modes and much more
  • Canon HS SYSTEM for exceptional low-light performance up to ISO 12800
The PowerShot G15 gives you the power to create images with spectacular depth, detail and emotional resonance. The 12.1 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor works in concert with Canon's own latest-generation DIGIC 5 Image Processor to create the renowned Canon HS SYSTEM. With the Canon HS SYSTEM, you'll experience excellent tracking performance even in low light, and achieve gorgeous still image quality even at high ISO speeds all the way up to ISO 12800; beautiful low-light shots are possible with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. The Canon HS SYSTEM lets you use higher shutter speeds to capture clearer images with reduced noise and blur in a variety of situations for incredible photos and videos
  • Capture stunning 1080p Full HD video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button; video functions include fine detail movie processing for lifelike images, zoom while shooting, and convenient playback on an HDTV via the HDMI output
Simply touch the dedicated movie button, now conveniently embedded in the PowerShot G15's thumb pad, to start recording video in 1080p Full HD. Video captured in 1080p Full HD is breathtakingly vivid and realistic, and Canon's Fine Detail Movie Processing achieves beautiful videos with high resolution processing that records approximately 4x the amount of information during video shooting for even greater image clarity and sharp portrayal of even the most delicate of details. You're free to use the full range of the zoom in movie mode, and sound is recorded in stereo. An HDMI output allows you to view and share your video on an HDTV immediately, simply by connecting the camera to the TV with an optional HDMI cable
  • High Speed AF greatly improves focus speed and High-Speed Burst HQ allows for continuous capture at a maximum of 10 frames* while maintaining superb image quality
The PowerShot G15 is equipped with Canon's latest advancement in AF technology: High Speed AF. The result of several improved technologies, High Speed AF delivers significantly faster focus speed for a super-responsive shooting experience that lets you capture every great shot as it happens. Thanks to High Speed AF, the PowerShot G15's shooting time lag is dramatically reduced to only 0.22 seconds. The technology also powers the camera's new High-Speed Burst HQ, with continuous capture at a maximum speed of approximately 10 fps. Moreover, images captured in High-Speed Burst HQ maintain the camera's superb image quality
  • Intelligent IS automatically chooses from six different modes to optimize image stabilization for the shooting condition
It's easy to capture clear, steady images with the PowerShot G15, even in low light without using a tripod. That's because the camera is equipped with Canon's innovative Intelligent IS. The system analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake correction method for the shooting situation – allowing you to focus on framing and capturing your shot. For stills, the system automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. When shooting video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes
    • Normal
Corrects for a wide range of camera movement when shooting stills
    • Panning
Panning motion is detected so that IS does not interfere with desired camera movement
    • Macro (Hybrid)
Corrects for shift-type camera shake, which typically occurs in macro (close-up) shooting
    • Dynamic
Effective for video shooting at wide-angle focal lengths, eliminating the unwanted shaking that typically occurs while walking.
    • Powered
Compensates for hand movement when shooting video at the telephoto end of the zoom range, where camera shake is magnified
    • Tripod
When tripod use is detected, the Image Stabilizer is stopped because it is not needed
  • Full range of shooting and recording modes, including 12-bit multi aspect RAW+JPEG as found in Canon EOS DSLR cameras, for the ultimate creative control
As with many EOS DSLR cameras, the PowerShot G15 uses a 12-bit converter to process the output of the CMOS sensor, resulting in true color, smooth tonal transitions and natural gradations. The PowerShot G15 lets you shoot in RAW mode, which records all the information captured by the sensor, giving you outstanding flexibility and complete creative control when editing your images with Canon's powerful bundled software, and the camera allows you to record in RAW and JPEG formats simultaneously. Now in RAW mode, you can even select among several aspect ratios, including 16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, and 4:5
  • A host of optional accessories including Speedlite flashes, underwater housing and a Tele-Converter Lens expands imaging possibilities
The PowerShot G15 lets you expand your creative options with a variety of optional accessories. Newly designed for the PowerShot G15, Tele-Converter TC-DC58E* enlarges the zoom's reach by 1.4x. A lens hood is included to block unnecessary light from outside the angle of view. Several Canon Speedlite flashes are also available for use with the PowerShot G15 to give you advanced options for exposure and illumination*. Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX is perfect for close-up and macro shooting, and the innovative Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX delivers a directional quality to macro illumination. With Underwater Housing WP-DC48, you can use your PowerShot G15 to document your snorkeling and diving adventures all the way to depths of 130 ft. (40m). The case is also great for protecting the camera from rain, ocean spray at the beach and any wet conditions
  • Bright 3.0-inch LCD with 922,000 dots enables easy viewing, plus an Optical Viewfinder for added versatility
The camera's big, bright 3.0-inch LCD screen makes framing, shooting and camera adjustments easy with a wide viewing angle, high contrast, and excellent color reproduction. Resolution is excellent at 922,000 dots; you'll see every detail of what you're shooting. For added shooting versatility, the camera is also equipped with a newly developed, real-image type Optical Viewfinder for an easy, familiar alternative to composing shots with an LCD screen. You can ensure a perfectly clear view by making dioptric adjustments within a range of approximately ±2 m-1 (diopter)
  • Dual Axis Electronic Level
The PowerShot G15 has a Dual Axis Electronic Level, featuring an artificial horizon over the image on the rear LCD screen or in the viewfinder for easy leveling while shooting. The dual axis electronic level shows both horizontal roll and vertical pitch, making it easy to identify when the camera is in a fixed level shooting position and ready to take the shot
  • EOS-like Dial Setting
Like EOS Digital SLR cameras, the PowerShot G15 employs a pro-style Front Dial. The Front Dial can be set to control shooting parameters including focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, step zoom, exposure compensation, white balance, i-Contrast and aspect ratio
  • Appending Copyright Information
The in-camera copyright information feature helps professionals secure control over images by setting copyright data directly into the camera and appending that information to each image file in the EXIF metadata

I've only had the G15 for about a week but I already know it satisfies a long time quest. I own a Canon D40 plus two superb "L" lenses that serve me well. But I wanted a smaller, lighter camera to travel with, one that had pro features without all the heft and bulk. I think the G15 is it! I have tried several P&S camera with limited success. I even had a new mirrorless camera for a few months but it did not work for me. The biggest problem with these other options has been the lack of a viewfinder. At least for my eyes, an LCD no matter how big, bright and sharp, still has limitations. The first is composition--it's tough to see what's in the scene when I'm holding the camera at arm's length. Second, arm's length means almost no steadiness or stability. Third, in bright sunlight it's impossible to see anything on the screen. So it's basically point and shoot and hope! The G15 on the other hand delivers with both a large, bright, sharp LCD plus an optical viewfinder. So I can choose which to use. It's easy to turn off the LCD to save battery power if needed. The camera feels solid and comfortable in my hands. It feels like a serious camera. Controls are well positioned and there is good tactile feedback when turning or clicking. Images are tack sharp. Even shots taken indoors at full zoom appear to be amazingly sharp. The pop-up flash is convenient and easy to use. Plus when I had questions I could not find answers to in the manual or online, I called Cannon Tech Support. I was very impressed with the knowledge, professionalism and courtesy of the agents. This was icing on the cake for me! when I had questions I could not find answers to in the manual or online, I called Cannon Tech Support. Thanks Canon--this product and your service people make owning this camera a joy!

I bought this camera about a month before I went on a vacation. I tried it out on a variety of everyday situations, and it seemed to work reasonably well, although the viewfinder turned out to be even more worthless then mentioned in other reviews. The wide angle was less wide than my previous camera, but I thought it would be OK for most pictures. It wasn't until I started using it on my trip that I discovered that this camera has very serious flaws which are especially evident at long distance shots. When shooting at maximum wide angle, the LCD shows a wider field of view than the camera can actually photograph. Everything looks good on the LCD up to pressing the shutter button, but when the display comes up afterward, the result is cropped picture about 5-10% smaller on the LCD screen (and on the memory card) than was shown in the preview. If you try to take a near maximum width picture of a wide building, the sides get cut off. If you notice the cropping when the two second display comes up, in theory you can back up and take an overly large picture, but I found in many city situations the combination of the limited wide angle capability and this cropping made taking the picture of a moderately wide building or similar subject impossible. There was an even worse problem, however. Every so often I would take a carefully composed photo, and the the result would the a picture skewed up or down by about 20%, from what was shown in the viewfinder when I clicked the shutter. It turns out that you can carefully click the shutter, wait for the screen to go dark and the shutter sounds to complete, but apparently the camera has still not captured the image. I found I had to wait and hold the camera steady for a couple of seconds or so after the shutter click to make sure the picture registered properly. To be really safe, you need to wait for the preview to come up and look at it carefully. Needless to say these problems are a disaster if you are taking any sort of action scene. I've never had this sort of problem with any other digital camera. Hopefully this can be fixed with a firmware upgrade.

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I am an okay photographer and needed a camera that would take amazing pictures without me having to do any real work. I spoke to two photographer friends and they both recommended the Canon G15. I have taken beautiful pictures of my baby and am so thrilled I bought this camera. The camera also has good battery life and I've found it to be sturdy. I've recommended this to many friends and every purchaser is happy.

Amazing and the best point and shoot camera ever with DSLR quality. Awesome at low light. Great HD video. 100% recommended! I love Canon! ....Thank you!

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

After much research of advanced point and shoot digital camera options I narrowed it down to two. The G15 being one. I have a DSLR and also a basic point and shoot camera, but I was looking for something in between. The DSLR did a fine job with pictures on a previous vacation trip, but it was rather bulky to travel with as others have noted. So my quest to find an advanced point and shoot prior to a recent vacation to Ireland was on. I visited my local camera store and after explaining what I was looking for they asked if I would be interested in a used G15. I said sure having owned Canon 35mm cameras years ago and always liked Canon but had not owned a Canon since the move to digital. The G15 was a favorite of the camera store and they took the time to show me the G15 features and explain some added functions of an advanced point and shoot camera. I made the purchase and took the G15 on vacation and I could not be more pleased with it. It was the perfect size for traveling via airports/planes and hopping on and off our tour motor coach. The picture quality is excellent and I was pleased with the range of options in the various shooting modes. I also found I did use the view finder. In some instances of bright sunlight it did help in framing the picture as opposed to the LCD screen. I also found the battery life was about as advertised. In short the G15 was an excellent purchase and I suspect I will be using it more and more.

Comments about Canon PowerShot 12.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I am a previous owner of G11. In comparison, the G15 has a pop-up flash and no swivel back. It has a new menu system that is better organized than the G11. You have horizon indicator. Sensor has 2 more megapixels. The aperture has 6 leaves. The lens at wide angle is f1.8 and f2.8 at telephoto. The latter was on my improvement wish list. The pop-up flash has delicate plastic linkages. I preferred the fixed flash on the G11/G12. Now it is on my wish list. So is swivel back. The exposure is accurate. B&W shots are excellent but you don't get raw recording with b&w. That's on my wish list too.

I purchased this camera a couple weeks before Christmas and have used it almost everyday since. Images are outstanding, particularly the low-light images I took at various candlelight services...stunning, and that's my wife's words, not just mine. Has an abundance of features including a fast lens, f1.8 at 28mm and only f2.8 even at 140mm! Love setting my G15 on a tripod and using the built-in ND filter for images of moving water. Still love and have my DSLR, but my G15 now goes everywhere with me.

I bought this camera to take on a trip to Niagara Falls, NY City, DC & Virginia because I did not want to take my DSLS. It is compact enough that I could carry in purse, pocket etc. I got wonderful pics of the falls, excellent night pics in NY, statue of Liberty, monuments in DC. I bought the adaptor so I could use a polarizer. You need to watch the back of the screen when turning the polarizer, it will not show any change when looking through the view finder. When using the view finder, you will see some of the adaptor but will not affect taking a pic. I wish it had the small manual like my DSLR has because I do like to take it along. I requested one but was the 8x11 size still helpful though. Pictures are very sharp & clear, battery life pretty good 200-250 pics which included looking at them on the screen, menu easy to use, love having the compensation dial on the top easy to make adjustments, don't miss the rotating screen on the back, never used it on my old powershot. Hardly use the view finder, good viewing screen on the back.

I had a G12 and it took stunning underwater photos. I decided to "upgrade" to a G15. Huge mistake. Nothing but problems with this camera. Takes way to long to focus and images are no where near as clear and as sharp as the G12. I would give this camera back to Canon in a second to have my G12 back.

I had purchase the SX 150 in September of 2012 and was disappointed with it's performance. Everything about it was sub par and I was considering going back to using my A570is when I decided to purchase the G15 in April of 2013. After using the G15 now for 6 months, I can give it a great review. Definitely worth the money. Faster continuous shooting, quicker focus, and f 1.8 lens and long battery life. This camera performance should not be compared to a DSLR performance because it's not one. But with its many shooting modes, quick recharge on the flash and compact size, to me, makes it worth every penny. I love being able to take 8 to 10 continuous shots and then pick out the best one of the shoot. I'm able to get pictures I would normally miss with the SX15's slower continuous mode. And no more carrying around an 8 pack of AA batteries because of how fast the SX15 would used them up. Longer battery life is a huge plus.

I bought the G9 in 2007. It still works. But, dust got into the lens. After 6 years and about 100,000 pictures I think that is reasonable. The camera was a tank. I also own the T3i with multiple lenses. I love the T3i but it is not as easy to carry around as the G series. Decided to buy the G15. Well worth the investment. I am WOWED by the improvements. Awesome pictures. Love the faster lens. Love the higher ISO. I have had this camera less than a month and I have already shot a few thousand pictures. I can't put it down. I take it with me everywhere. The battery lasted through 700 pictures on the first charge. Great photos during daytime and nightime. Love how easy the flash is to turn on. That is much improved. My only wish is that I could change the TV and AV while in the "P" setting the way they had it in the G9. Other than that, I have no complaints. Very happy with this purchase. I won't wait another 6 years to upgrade.

Camera is very solid and doesn't feel like most point and shoots. Image quality is great for a P&S. Focus is very fast and accurate. Video quality is outstanding, rivals many dedicated video cameras. Cons - Viewfinder is pathetic. It has no exposure info, poor clarity, the only disappointment on an otherwise fine camera.
