I have washed about 20 loads so far and am very happy with the washer's performance. If you have not used a high-efficiency top-loader before, you might find it a little confusing at first. For example, it might look like some of the clothes are not getting wet because they don't get submerged in a tank of water. Also, if you haven't used HE detergent before, you need to follow the instructions closely until you get the hang of it. No worries: the clothes get very clean and are so thoroughly spun that they dry quickly. I am also happy that I can leave the washer door open without it sticking out into my utility room (as my front-loader did), and I am hopeful that I won't have the smelly-clothes problem that plagued my last machine (a front loader) despite my best efforts to leave the door ajar and clean the machine according to the instructions. Another plus: this LG washer has a very deep tub and holds a lot more clothes than my front-loader did. It's great for washing quilts or blankets; there's a special setting for that. I bought this LG machine because of its high consumer rating and the many good reviews I found online. I expect to get great performance in terms of cleaning and energy efficiency. So far, so good. Contrary to a lot of the reviews I've read, I have experienced only one problem with load balancingâ€"when I washed a couple of very heavy throw blankets and had to rearrange them once before the machine could go into spin mode. I don't think balancing is much of an issue if you load items properly. Put heavier items in first and spread everything around evenly rather than piling it up in the middle of the machine. Also, many other reviewers have mentioned that it takes a long time to wash a load. That is true, and it might be a problem for someone who has a big family and does many loads per day. For me, though, it's not an issue. Yes, it takes a long time to go through the full cycle, but if that's what it takes to get my clothes really clean without wasting a lot of water, I'm fine with that. There is a speed cycle if you really need it now and then. There are, however, a few downsides that I wasn't aware of until I purchased the machine, and some of them might have made me reconsider my decision: As soon as the machine was delivered and installed, the first thing I noticed was a warning label about how washing anything that is waterproof or water-resistant, such as mattress pads or plastic mats, could destroy the machine. The manual does not explain why this is so, and I have not been able to find a good/complete listing of what kinds of items can and can't be washed in this machine. From what I've been able to discern (again, this isn't explained AT ALL in the manual, so I've had to research it online), the problem is that water-repelling items can trap water inside them, and then the machine can shake itself apart or wreck the items while trying to spin out the water. So the manual says not to wash items such as "water-proof or water-resistant items" including "certain mattress pads, mattress covers, rain gear, camping gear, skiing apparel, outdoor gear and similar items." My husband and I are active outdoors, so this is a bummer. We can't wash our rain jackets or cross-country ski pants in our new washer, and these garments are supposed to be washed regularly to keep them functioning effectively. I'm not sure whether we can wash sleeping bags, which don’t seem waterproof but seem to qualify as “outdoor gear.â€ Obviously I don't want to destroy my new machine or cause property damage or injury, but I dread driving to the nearest laundromat (12 miles away) every time I have to wash a jacket. What I need is a COMPLETE list of which items qualify for the warning. The manual doesn't have it, and I can't find one anywhere at lg.com. The Help library online is VERY limited!!! Just the basic stuff that is already in the manual. I have seen a lot of online inquiries about whether you can wash rubber-backed rugs in the machine, and the answers online are unclear. I saw one LG response saying it's okay if you do it at a lower spin speed, but others say never never do it. If nothing else, it might make the rubber come off your rugs, even if you wash on cold with low or medium spin (as I've done in my previous washer). So that’s one more thing I now have to take to the local laundromat. I replaced one rug with a non-rubber-backed one, but it doesn’t stay put. Ack! This is a serious inconvenience, as most household rugs have a rubber backing AND need regular cleaning. Another limitation: When I told friends about my smelly clothes problem with my previous front loader, many of them recommended enzyme-type products (I won’t name them here, because LG has a policy against references to other products in reviews). However, if you use a liquid HE detergent, you cannot use a powdered enzyme product with it. Everything must be added through a dispenser, rather than right in the tub with the clothes, and there are dispensers only for detergent, fabric softener, and bleach. When I inquired about this, I was told that LG doesn't recommend using these enzyme products at all. The bleach compartment "holds liquid chlorine bleach." It's not clear where you can put non-chlorine bleach if you use that instead. The "Tub Clean" cycle instructions in the manual do not explain what type of product to use. First it refers to "tub cleaner or lime scale remover," which go in the dispenser drawer. But then it has some instructions about other products. For example: "when you use liquid chlorine bleach, load it into the liquid chlorine bleach compartment." It's not clear whether this is referring to the Tub Clean cycle or just when you're using bleach for washing clothes. Very confusing!!! I didn’t know what “tub cleanerâ€ is, so I contacted LG about this and was told that they recommend using bleach for Tub Clean, and it goes in the bleach compartment. For any high-efficiency machine (top-loader or front-loader), you need to run a cleaning cycle with bleach once a month to keep mold and mildew from growing inside your machine and then getting into your towels and clothing. Apparently manufacturers have not considered that rural people like me use septic systems for our homes, and chlorine can kill off the bacteria that break down waste in our septic tank. I would like to avoid using chlorine bleach, but I had so many problems with mold and mildew in my last machine that my husband finally re-routed our washing machine, tub and shower plumbing to a separate “graywaterâ€ drainage system that does not go into the septic tank. So now I can use chlorine in my machine, but I still worry about what it might be doing to the soil and plants in the drainage area. I bet I’m not the only rural person with these concerns (not to mention my urban friends who also prefer to avoid chlorine because of its environmental impacts), but this issue is not addressed in any manufacturers’ manuals that I have seen. They just assume that everyone will use bleach at least once a month (for tub cleaning) if not more often. My previous machine did not come with any instructions for cleaning out the pump drain but I found some online while looking for advice about the widespread “smelly clothesâ€ problem, and when I cleaned out the drain it had horrible smelling gunk in there along with a few coins and a button. Unlike LG front loaders, the top loaders apparently do not have a pump filter that you clean out regularly, so I wonder whether there is any danger of debris getting in there. Finally, on my new washer the signal that a cycle is complete is a little melody instead of a beeper or buzzer. That's all well and good, except that the machine has no volume control and the tune is not very loud. (I think you can turn off the signal, but I checked with LG and there is no way to make it louder.) I have no hearing problems but it's hard to hear the tune when the door to my utility room is closed or there is other noise in the house. The manual says to remove laundry "immediately" after the cycle is complete (because it's pretty dry already from the spin cycle), but that's impossible if you can’t hear the signal. I have to remember to check for a completed cycle, which isn’t easy. What were the engineers thinking??? I might still buy this machine if I had it to do all over again. I would never go back to an old-style top loader because of all the wasted electricity and water plus more wear-and-tear on fabrics. I'd be wary of a front loader because of the bad experience I had with a defective design that was susceptible to mold and mildew, and because of the limited space in my utility room for a front-loader door to be left wide open. But if all HE top-loaders have this issue with waterproof clothes and rubber-backed mats, that doesn't leave any good options. I'll be patronizing a laundromat for the first time in 25 years :(

I have held off reviewing this washer until it had been in use for at least 3 months. I will detail the reasons for its poor rating in the hope that it will keep others from making the mistake of purchasing this poorly designed and troublesome product. First understand that this “High Efficiency washer does not allow you to adjust the water level. It is done automatically by sensing the weight of the load. This means that often it will fill only several inches and your wash load sloshes around and parts of the laundry never are submersed in water. According to LG this is normal and just a “new type of washing process. If however you want a more complete fill where the load actually is submersed and agitated there are ways to accomplish this. One is to use the “bulky bedding “setting which will fill the tub to a higher level typically to the top. This is considerably more water than is needed for most loads and will often lead to unbalanced conditions during the spin cycles. Another method to induce a higher water level is to pause the washer after the initial fill and readjust the load and restart it. The washer will than re-sense the load and add more water. If you are getting the idea that this washer requires your active participation in using it read on. The washer will often go out of balance during the spin cycle. It will try and rebalance itself by fully draining and totally refilling and spinning the load out again. If it is still out of balance it will shut down with an error code. So this “High Efficiency unit ends up using twice the water from an unbalanced conditioned. The only way to avoid this additional fill is to pause the washer and readjust the load to avoid the inevitable unbalanced conditioned. You get to go through this same scenario when the washer spins out the rinse cycle. The larger the load the worse the unbalanced condition. I have found that modest loads easily done without issue in our last conventional washer must now be broken in to 2 or 3 very small loads. Hardly efficient and requiring you to actively watch over every load. I should also point out that the “Bulky Bedding setting necessary for sheets or towels will often lead to your wash load being twisted together. If you can live with the constant checking of each load and cycle this washer is still poor quality. In the short time we have owned it has had the following mechanical issues. While in the drain cycle it began to fill again. If I had not been checking the washer for a potential un balanced spin cycle it would have just drained and filled in definitely. LG replaced the fill valves and so far the condition has not reoccurred. Now the washer has developed a condition where it drains the wash load and skips the rinse cycle. This problem does not happen on every load. And unless you actively keep checking the cycles you will possible not even know that a rinsed cycle has been missed. As of this writing I am awaiting another service call from LG to address this problem. Assuming the washer has no mechanical problems and you are only doing very small loads this washer may work for you. If however you need to wash loads of larger sizes this washer will require your constant attention and should be avoided. Bottom line this is a poorly designed and problematic washer.

We really love our new washer. My clothes seem so much more clean and bright. It is very quiet. It also has a very large basket, which handles big loads with ease. Best purchase in a washing machine we have ever made.

At almost 70 years old I was a bit apprehensive about purchasing a new washer without an agitator, much less with an electronic control panel. But I was won over immediately: I found it was easy to use. Amazed at how little water it uses but the clothes come out perfectly clean and dryer than with my old washer. I've only used the settings "Cotton/Normal", "Pure Color" and "Bulky Bedding". I did read the manual thoroughly and am paying attention to how I load clothes. After about 10 loads have not encountered an "error" message as yet, but I know what to do if that happens. I like the countdown on the timer and the little tune when the load is finished - don't have to keep checking on the load's status. Would highly recommend. In fact my refrigerator is 16 years old and I chose an LG model #had to order it# that would fit in my 33 inches of width. Has the two French doors and bottom freezer. Looking forward to having it delivered. A Satisfied customer - just want it to last.

This machine beats my leaky, smelly, front load washer hands down. There are so many washing options and it is so quiet. Clothes wash great and spin much dryer than past washers. It has held huge loads with ease. Love this machine!

I bought the washer/dryer set a few months ago and have not been disappointed! They are very user friendly, and of courses washes and dries perfectly. I love the sensing technology, which adjusts water levels, to avoid wastefulness. Of course the front loading washers are pretty; I have one at a rental unit, but top loaders are by far the best, and prevents mildew. The drier is quick, and fluffs very nicely. My favorite cycle is the Freshen Up. I use this all the time to warm a blanket for the kiddos or get a wrinkle out. The little song played at the end is so sweet and a nice way to be alerted to the end of the cycle, as opposed to the otherwise harsh annoying buzzers. LG is top of the line.

Initially concerned about reviews regarding out of balance problems. Upon arrival of the washer, I was alarmed that I could get the washer professionally installed. I ended up installing it myself and paid particular attention to balancing instructions. I was thrilled to find I have not had any balance issues as indicated in previous reviews. The washer is quiet and a start and forget system. It cleans well and is much larger than my old washer. This allows me to wash all washable items I have in my home. Blankets, sleeping bags, lots of clothes at one time shows the capacity. 4 months and no issues.

I love my new washer! Our clothes smell fresh after a cycle. It's so quiet that I have to check that it is working. Excellent product!

                            Clothes not clean!

Im shocked at the number of people who love this washer. The water does does not even cover the clothes so clothes dont get clean. Low water levels are normal for this machine. Average wash time is 50 minutes for one load. I have to add water to each load. Such a dissappointment and waste of $$$. It sound like a jet on the spin cycle.

Many times I just drop the clothes in and push the buttons, I do very big loads and the bulk wash sometimes , I really like the short wash, I would recommend this washer
