Audioquest USB Digital-Audio Converter, Model DRAGONFLY

DragonFly is the answer to the challenge of getting State-of-the-Art sound from a computer, whether in a component-based home entertainment system, on the desktop, or on the go.

Measuring just 19mm x 12mm x 46mm (60mm including the USB connector, 62mm including cap), DragonFly is a flash-drive-stick size Digital-Audio Converter (aka, “DAC”) that connects to a USB jack on a Mac® or Windows® PC, bypassing the computer’s internal sound card, allowing any computer to deliver sound that’s vastly superior to what would be heard from the computer by itself. Computer designers are very capable, but the manufacturing budget limits them … and well, not all computer engineers have experienced good sound.

In “variable” output mode, Dragonfly’s full 2-volt output is twice the audio output of many computers, allowing it to easily drive headphones and ear buds directly. DragonFly can also drive powered speakers or a power amplifier via its 64-position analog volume controlled preamplifier stage; digital volume controls too often reduce signal resolution and decrease sound quality.

In “fixed” output mode, DragonFly behaves like a traditional DAC or disc player, sending a line-level signal to a preamp or AV receiver. All that’s required is a low-distortion cable with a 3.5mm plug on the DragonFly end, and a 3.5mm plug or stereo RCAs at the receiving end. Rather than sharing crucial audio “data clocking” functions with the computer, DragonFly employs a sophisticated “asynchronous” USB audio data transfer that dramatically reduces digital timing errors. In addition, thanks to two completely independent internal clocks (one for 44.1kHz/88.2kHz signals
and another for 48kHz/96kHz signals), the math algorithms used to convert the digital audio data to analog are always optimized for the native sample rate of the audio content being played. This dual, independent clocking ensures that DragonFly doesn’t rely on imperfect mathematical approximations for certain sample rates, and the result is better “tracking” and better sound. A smart 5-color LED indicator on DragonFly shows the resolution of the incoming signal. DragonFly accepts music files and audio data ranging from MP3s and CD-standard 16-bit/44.1kHz signals, all the way up to native 24- bit/96kHz high-resolution.
