PLAYBAR - Sonos Home Theater Soundbar Speaker

The Sonos Playbar home theater soundbar adds premium audio to your flat screen TV in a sleek, easy to hook-up package. You no longer need a complicated home theater system, with multiple speakers and hundreds of feet of cable, just to enjoy theater-quality sound in your home. Instead, the Playbar connects to your TV with a single optical cable, playing audio from any source also connected to the TV.

Hidden behind the unassuming black grill are six midrange speakers and three tweeters, each powered by an individual Class-D digital amplifier. Combined with sophisticated signal processing, the result is a range of crystal-clear audio which replicates the enveloping effect of a traditional surround sound home theater system. If you need additional bass, the Sonos Playbar can wirelessly synch with the heavy-hitting Sonos Sub.

Simply being the best TV soundbar wasn't enough for Sonos, the leader in wireless music streaming technology. They went one step further by also making the Playbar a standalone music streaming device. Tune into your favorite channels on services like Pandora or Slacker Radio, with the available Android and iPhone apps, or stream songs stored on your NAS to the Playbar. The Sonos Playbar works seamlessly with dozens of music services and can synch with up to 16 computers or NAS devices, providing you with nearly endless listening choices.

Key Features:

  • Complements HD television screens with richly textured HiFi sound
  • Wirelessly streams all the music on earth
  • Simple to set up, control and expand
  • Requires just two cords: one power cord, one optical cord (both included). Syncs with other Sonos speakers wirelessly
  • Understands and speaks most IR remote's language and can be controlled by free apps for your Android®, iPhone® or iPad®
  • Plays all sources plugged in to your HDTV: cable/SAT boxes, Blu-Ray players, and video game consoles. If it's connected to your HD, PLAYBAR will play it

PLAYBAR requires an optical connection, which is standard on most current Televisions. If you are unsure if your television is compatibility, please contact an Abt specialist to discuss your current make/model.

This sound bar is great! I am a product designer and care greatly about audio quality and aesthetics. This product reaches or surpasses my extremely high qualifications/expectations. The design details are well done and the audio quality of the bar alone are fantastic. Living in a condo, it's almost too good as I fear annoying my neighbors. The bass booms and the difference between before and after installation is astounding.

I primarily use this unit to provide sound for my TV and music streaming from the internet. The amount of programs that are accessible is impressive. I'd highly doubt anyone could complain of their favorite software/app not being included. The speaker sounds so good I've used it for music during parties and working from home instead of my other previously owned devices. I'll even mute the TV and crank up a music app just because it's a delight to listen to music that way. The sound quality and directional speakers during TV sessions are great, friends have literally asked if people were outside of my high rise condo or at the door because of the speakers directional capabilities. It rivals any sound bar and does sound as if there are speakers to either side.

The main reason I bought this is because my TV lacked great audio clarity and volume. I researched for 3-4 months which sound bar system to go with and bench-marked some of the most well respected brand names in the industry. This product launched 2 months into my research. The actual final reason I made this purchase is because it was one of the only systems that did not require buying additional components to directly interface with the unit itself via phone/tablet for internet streaming; moreover, for the price this is the system that allowed me to 'test drive' one of the modular units (play bar) to see if I actually wanted to expand. In this modern day, I wanted to have everything at my fingertips (on my phone), that promise is delivered. While some consider it pricey other respectable setups require you to pay the same amount or more of both the Sub and Play Bar without the modular, convenient, expandable, (hopefully) sustainable, integrated system Sonos has designed.

Very easy to set up, less than 3 minutes. Very easy to control, download an app. Some people's reviews argue that one input is a problem and/or it lacks true 3.1-5.1. Okay, I would argue that unless you were told it wasn't true 5.1 or a true audiophile, which there are very few, you would not know the difference. This reason alone made me hesitate and not buy it at launch so I could read reviews first. In my experience in the picky realm of product design including consumer research, many people pretend to be audiophiles, but they are more focused on statistics rather than enjoying music like a normal person. They'll complain if it's blatantly obvious or if they are told it's not 'true', but may not have even noticed if the latter. If the scalability of the music is an issue perhaps this isn't the unit for you. From first hand experience, a good analogy is the difference is far less than regular radio vs. HD radio in my opinion. One input works fine for me because I have a modern TV that all of my components/peripherals are hard wired to.

I love the modular and expandable aspects of this line and those factors are another part of the reason for purchase. I can later add pieces to complete my setup to the level I choose.

I titled this 'so far' with 5 stars because of my extremely demanding personal requirements of a great/successful product based upon my profession of designing exactly that; basically it must prove to be sustainable and last through a respectable amount of time, while maintaining high audio and aesthetic quality. (ie. not break in 6-12 months) If it does not the review WILL change.

In conclusion this product is everything it says it is and more, it's honestly great to amazing - audio from your smart device, great sound, clarity and quality, above all easy to use and very well designed. If you think it's pricey consider the market and work smarter, if you are worried about one input get a new TV, if you are a true audiophile and demand to have true 5.1 etc get something else.

I've already recommended this to friends and colleagues without any encouragement from Sonos, hopefully I'm short-listed to trial and rate new products! :)

Overall the PLAYBAR is a very nice front stage sound bar, but don't expect the true 3.1 you get from setting up a 3-channel front stage with separates. In fact, I don't believe any sound bar should really be used in this way.

The Good:
1. Sound quality is clear for what's its made for
2. Mounting options are nice. Countertop placement is the easiest, while the wall mount is very sleek but involved more work to level it. There's a wall mount bracket you can buy separately for ~$40 and this makes the whole set up much easier, but isn't necessary.
3. Ability to use network-based features is superb. Play music from your iphone, computer, internet radio, alarms, etc.

The Bad:
1. Albeit nice, the iPhone app interface is a bit busy to look at and I still sometimes don't know which soft button leads me to where.
2. This device is always on...and this is the world of Sonos. So If you intend to use this for TV sound (via optical audio), you may run into issues controlling it.
3. Using the TV speaker AND PLAYBAR simultaneously will likely produce an echo effect.
4. Turning off the TV speaker and using the PLAYBAR only? If the volume buttons on your TV remote are learnable by the PLAYBAR, setting you're TV to "external speaker: will result in a very annoying message from your Samsung TV saying you can't control volume if you have the TV set to "external speaker". You'll be able to adjust the sound on your PLAYBAR, you'll just get this annoying message on your TV which will need to be cleared everytime you turn up or down the volume. This is more of a TV issue than Sonos...but still need to be aware of before you invest.
5. Not all universal remotes will work this volume. The trouble I have found, even using high-priced remotes such as the Logitech Harmony 900, is that they either begin working well but suddenly stop or they don't work at all. When I tried to re-program the TV volume buttons to the PLAYBAR, PLAYBAR suddenly doesn't detect the volume buttons anymore. The dealer I purchased the PLAYBAR from told me that I might experience problems if I control it with anything other than the iPhone app. They told me the only remote they have been successful with using is the PRO Control Remote ($$$).
6. If you intend to reply on the iPhone or Android app to control your PLAYBAR, understand that if others in your household don't have a piece of technology readily available to control it, you're screwed. You're choice is to use a computer, purchase the Sonos remote controller, or buy a tablet and keep it around the PLAYBAR location where everyone can use it. Even then, you'll likely need a separate remote for the TV.

Just for the record: I am fairly experienced with A/V and computer equipment; not a pro, but intelligent enough to be dangerous. Over the years, my biggest frustration has been the fact that we need so many remotes for so many things and when you purchase ONE remote to control everything, it's usually still cumbersome or extremely expensive. The last thing I had planned to do after spending $700 on a soundbar was to spend another $400 on a remote control. If Sonos came out with an app that controlled it's own equipment PLUS all the other A/V equiqment in the world...I'd be recommending Sonos to the world.

This is soooo cool! I bought it for my husband's birthday and finally set it up for him...but really for me! Sonos easily connected my smart phone, all the music on my computer and it has hundreds of radio stations! Just discovered "Shows" on the radio stations - now this is living! Way to go Sonos! I only bought the Play 1 and going out to get another one TODAY!

Sonos has a wonderful reputation and the product lives up to the reviews. In particular, I was interested in the Sonos software features that clarify speech as well as the night time settings that soften loud sounds while boosting speech. Amazing. It was not uncommon for me to have to replay parts of movies or TV shows (e.g., Boardwalk Empire, True Detective) multiple times to understand the dialog. Sonos has taken care of this issue. In addition, the sound in normal mode does not offend my wife when watching movies or shows. I have owned hi-end audio equipment in the past that I could not use because my KEF Reference speakers had to be played at higher volumes to sound good. The Sonos system sounds crisp at all levels.

I had a true 7.1 sound system prior to moving to a tiny apartment and needing an option that required much less space. I almost cried when I sold my old system because I thought there was no way I could find something in a sound bar profile with an equivalent performance.

I was really wrong. This sound bar is SOLID and it does a very convincing simulation of 7.1 sound. It's still a bit light on the bass, but after listening to a coworkers Sonos subwoofer I think I may look into adding that to help with the low end.

My music and television have never sounded better. The Playbar does a great job with the full spectrum for most music and TV. If you want the big bass on the explosions and bass heavy music I still think you need a woofer.

Comments about Sonos Home Theater Soundbar Speaker:

i've never purchased any audio components or speakers, so this was my first foray into this category of electronics. i purchased this system with the intent to expand to surround sound in my living room. the idea of wireless surround and subwoofer was very appealing to me, as the thought of having to run multiple wires around the room prevented me from actually setting up an audio system. i have the soundbar wired (ethernet) directly to my router. this allows for music to be played directly to the speaker from other computers and mobile devices on the same network. the software is easy to install and operate. the sound from the tv is certainly enhanced, so it's a great alternative to the built-in speakers on any television. my main issue with the sonos soundbar is the limited audio input. sonos expects the user to connect his television audio output (via toslink optical) to the soundbar, so the tv acts as the switch between audio inputs (via hdmi components). the known problem is that most tvs don't output audio (via the toslink) in dolby surround, so if one is setting up the sonos system for surround sound, it will be lost in translation (so to speak). of note, i have a 2011 samsung plasma (high end). i ended up getting the sub and two play3 speakers. after some internet research i was able to figure out how to directly connect my components to the soundbar, bypassing the tv middleman, which resulted in true surround sound (5.1). my two main components (cablebox and xbox one) can output dolby 5.1 via the toslink optical output (with some adjustments to their settings), and the result is great. i've used the xb1 with blu-ray movies and netflix, and the surround sound was what i was expecting when i decided to buy the sonos system. as always, i choose abt for my pricier (note: the sonos system is a large cash investment) electronics purchases. the rep i always work with gives me a discount on purchases, and there's no tax or shipping charges. they always ship out immediately, and i receive the products in no time at all. i'll review the sub and play3 separately.

I wanted to switch to a sound bar system. After listening to the quality of the play one and play three I decided to get the playbar. I am not disappointed! This has the quality that beat out other soundbars, it will not match up to your traditional surround sound system but that being said this system has wow'd me and exceeded my expectations.

Breath of fresh air when it comes to sound performance and ease of set up for every room.

I own two sound bars and two sub woofers with two additional speakers for suround sound.

Love the fact that we can have different music in different rooms.

Great system! My new Sonos system allows me to pull all my music from my computer and tap into hundreds of radio stations (music, news, etc.) from around the world. I have a Sonos soundbar and sub, and 14 speakers recessed throughout the house in 7 different rooms. My volume controls allow me to isolate music per room. It was truly money well spent!!
