Yamaha Black 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver, Model RXV675BK

Key Features:

  • 7-channel powerful surround sound
  • 105 W per channel (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9% THD, 2 ch driven)
  • 90 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09% THD, 2 ch driven)
  • HD Audio format decoding: Dolby ® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™
  • Dolby Digital Plus® and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio™
  • Full discrete amp configuration
  • Pure Direct for pure Hi-Fi sound quality enjoyment
  • Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24-bit DACs for all channels
  • Low jitter PLL circuitry helps optimize sound imaging
  • Assignable amplifiers for front speaker bi-amp connection
  • Intelligent assignable amplifiers for Surround Back Front Presence or Zone 2
  • FLAC or WAV 192 kHz/24-bit audio playback

Features:

  • Total Purity Concept for the Finest Sound Quality
The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, anti-vibration technology and independent pure power supplies. All models have a fully discrete power amplifier that helps to minimize distortion. They also adopt independent pure power supplies, allowing dedicated power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. The anti-vibration heatsinks are designed to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise on certain models. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality
  • Extensive Audio Codec and Format Support
This AV receiver is compatible with many audio formats such as Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™. They are also compatible with FLAC/WAV 192 kHz playback. You will enjoy excellent Blu-ray Disc™ sound quality and other types of high resolution sources
  • Intelligent Amp Assign
Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. For example, in a 7.1-channel system, when Zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there’s no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the receiver — one more way Yamaha makes your life a little easier
  • 4K Pass-through and Upscaling Supports Latest High Resolution Video Formats
This AV receiver's HDMI input/output supports 4K video image pass-through. It also can perform 4K upscaling to boost a lower resolution image to super high-def resolution. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats
  • HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel
3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable
  • High Quality Video Processing with Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing
In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges. This causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally
  • SCENE for One-touch Start
Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds
  • HDMI CEC for Easy Operation
Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop
    • *All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work
  • AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV Receiver
This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means they can accept wireless music streaming from iPod® touch, iPhone® or iPad®, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computer on your home theater system. You can use view metadata such as song title, artist name as well as album art* via AV receiver's on-screen display
    • *Some models don't support album art display
  • AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation
This AV receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller App that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Google Play to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPhone® or Android devices. You can also use in as many as 23* different languages and customize the interface by hiding unused icons and renaming functions. A tablet version is also available
    • *As of Spring 2013
  • Network Functions
This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet radio, Pandora® and Rhapsody®, and operate your system via WebBrowser Control. The AV Controller App (from iTunes App Store or Google Play) lets you control various functions from your iPod®, iPhone®, iPad® or Android devices
  • MHL® (Mobile High-Definition Link) Support for High Quality Video and Audio
MHL provides easy, direct connection of compatible mobile phones and this AV receiver. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phones is supported. The receiver also charges the connected phone. Play, Stop and other basic operations can be controlled from the remote control
  • USB Digital Connection for iPod®, iPhone® and iPad® on the Front Panel
A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver’s remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions
  • Advanced Multi-language GUI On-screen Display
Yamaha’s latest graphical user interface has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable status bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI provides a choice of eight languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese and can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures
  • YPAO-R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) Sound Optimization
YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds
  • HDMI Front Panel Input
In addition to the large number of HDMI inputs on the rear panel, there is also one on the front panel. This gives you a convenient way to quickly plug in a digital camera or camcorder for highest quality pictures
  • Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode
When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray Disc™ player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources
  • HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers
  • Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should
  • Dialogue Lift and Dialogue Level Adjustment for Natural Dialogue and Vocals
Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening
  • Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others
  • New Virtual CINEMA DSP for 7.1-channel Surround Sound
New Virtual CINEMA DSP provides virtual 7.1-channel surround sound from only front speakers (2.1-channel), with no need for rear speakers. Using new 24 kHz HRTF (Head-related Transfer Function) technology, it creates a rear sound field that is extremely spacious, natural and powerful
  • Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging
The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound
  • ECO Mode Lowers Power Consumption by 20 Percent*
Yamaha’s new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20 percent. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu
    • *Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement)
  • Selectable Auto Power Down
Auto Power Down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after two, four, eight or 12 hours
  • Low Standby Power Consumption
Yamaha makes its receivers eco-friendly with a low standby power consumption of 0.1 W in IR Standby mode (3 W in HDMI Standby Through mode, 3 W in Network Standby mode)

About 20 years ago I brought home what I considered a state-of-the-art high quality Yamaha RX-V890 Stereo Receiver to build a home theater system around. It was absolutely wonderful until it got slowly left behind as the technology changed. Shortly after getting a Satellite Receiver, a Smart HDTV and a Blu-Ray Disc Player, it became apparent that my trusty Receiver didn't have the proper connectors to take advantage of my new equipment. Reluctantly I decided to replace it and naturally chose Yamaha. While I didn't want to accept lower quality, I also didn't want to break the bank, so I did a bunch of research and decided on the Yamaha RX-V675. All I can say is that all those people who give it good grades for easy set-up must be WAAAY more tech savvy than me. As another reviewer stated, a hard copy User's Manual would have made things much simpler, and I really think that the people at Yamaha could use help in simplifying the instructions. On the other hand, this unit is far more technologically advanced than I gave it credit for. It will still take me some time to become proficient, but all the effort really paid off. The sound quality may be even better than I had before and I've got it working with my Smart TV, Blu-Ray, Sony 400 Disc CD Changer, Sony DVD/VHS Player/Recorder, and a Yamaha Double Cassette Deck Player/Recorder. The speaker setup is my old 5.1 system, but with the included high tech speaker setup, the sound is much better balanced with a resulting smoother sound. My appreciation of this Receiver grows exponentially as I learn to use it. I did purchase the YWA-10 Wireless Connector to connect to my wireless home computer network to be able to stream media and provide firmware updates. This setup was a NIGHTMARE and only got accomplished after several days of frustrated cursing followed by an extended phone conversation with a very knowledgeable and courteous Yamaha Tech rep. Unless I am a complete moron, the instructions are atrocious.

Bottom line is that I love this receiver and would gladly recommend it to anyone with the caveat of being prepared to spend some time learning how to hook it up and use it. The sound quality is magnificent and I am thrilled to own it.

I bought this to replace an older Onkyo thinking this Yamaha was better. While the video playback is better, the Sound quality is not. Very disappointed for the cost of the Receiver. 1st and definitely the "LAST" Yamaha Product I ever purchase. I live in a small Mobile Home and simply using box fans in the same room dwarf the sound from this Yamaha! Owned less than a month and "VERY DISAPPOINTED".

although i must concede that this is probably the best receiver in its price range, it did disappoint in some minor area, mostly concerning zone 2 operation:

1. it would be a better receiver if a separate lfe output were provided for zone 2. why compromise your listening experience, just because its in another room?

2. why not create a simple option allowing you to listen to an hdmi input in zone 2?

3. unless it would be prohibitively expensive, why not include built-in wi-fi and bluetooth as other manufacturers have done?

    • Difficult To Set Up

This review is for the RX-V675 but I expect all my info will apply to the newer RX-V677 as well. I have had this unit for 4 months. To keep this review brief, I will only address a small portion of the functionality which you may find useful. You can use this as 2 channel, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, and more options, while also having zone 2 speakers connected.
Zone 2 speakers work, I think, for only analog – meaning you can play a CD, USB drive, radio, internet radio, Pandora, and more to zone 2 but nothing from smartphone or tablet will play on zone 2.
I have the receiver hardwired to an internet connection and bought the optional bluetooth device YBA-11. You can only transmit audio wirelessly, not video, from android or apple devices, via optional Bluetooth and built in Airplay. You cannot transmit any video from smartphones or tablets via Bluetooth or airplay to the receiver. The standard cables that come with smartphones will also transmit audio but not any video through their USB connection to the receiver. But, with some optional cables, you can play both audio and video from smartphones and tablets into the receiver with a wired connection. With an Apple AV lightning adapter and an HDMI cable, I have connected the iphone 5S to the receiver's front HDMI input, and with a micro USB to HDMI MHL cable I connect a Samsung Galaxy S4 to the receiver's front HDMI input. With either of those set-ups, the receiver's MHL functionality receives both the audio and video signal so that whatever you can see and hear on you smartphone you can hear through the receiver and see on your HDTV through your normal HDMI cable from the receiver to the HDTV. Airplay is able to transmit both audio and video but the receiver does not accept the video portion. An apple TV box might solve the wireless video issue but I don't have one.
I copied numerous CD's onto a USB flash drive using my laptop, plug the USB into the receiver's front port and can play that music and see a menu of all of the songs on the HDTV. I use Pandora among the web music available options and internet radio.
The receiver has a lot of functionality but not much is easy to find or set up without the user manual. I contacted Yamaha support twice to better understand some features and they were helpful each time.
Cons: A little difficult to set up if you want to use it beyond the basic features. Unable to wirelessly stream video.
Overall: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The setup of the system with my Onkyo speakers was quite easy. I love the sound quality and its features. I have the zone 2 wired to 2 outside speakers, and while sitting outside having a beverage, with the I-phone app, I can easily turn on and off the zone, set the source for the zone, play xm-radio or a playlist through rhapsody, pick/skip songs, and adjust the volume. I cannot think of a feature I would add right now. And my wife makes me turn the volume down outside because it is that loud.

All that being said, my first one received was DOA and had to be replaced, which was extremely easy with the online retailer.

When I first set this up, I was disappointed at how clunky the interface was for controlling zones 1 and 2. Then I installed the Yamaha app on my iPad and phone and it got very simple and intuitive. I am using this receiver on zone 1 to power two tvs and whole home indoor audio system. Zone 2 controls six pairs of outdoor speakers. Both zones have plenty of volume with each zone driving at least 6 pair of speakers. I love that I can have everything turned off in the house and can crank up zone 2 from my iPad, even if I am outside. And if I am listening to Pandora, I can control the volume from the iPad outside and even skip songs or rate them as thumbs up or thumbs down.

at lower levels the vocals can be overwhelmed by the surround. When you boost the dialog to compensate, turn it up it is over powering, this is most likely due to the small space the unit is in. It runs quite cool compared to my previous onkyo and sony products.all things said and done i am very happy with the unit.

This replaced a Denon receiver that was about 4 years old. The HDMI inputs were very noisy and finally one failed. The dialog was always muddy and the overall sound was OK but no where near as open and spacious. The main controls I use are the dialog adjust and the lipsync. I use this as a 5.1 system with the zone 2 for patio speakers. I run a Harmony Smart Control which works great for controlling the outside zone2 using my iphone or ipad. The video processing is nice when viewed on my Panasonic 60 inch plasma set. I really like the onscreen display as well as the easily read display on the receiver. It is useful being able to name the HDMI inputs for my uses such as FIOS TV, Apple TV, PS 3, etc so that with a glance you can tell if the unit is on the right input fro the selected Harmony function.

The sound is really great as well for music, especially streamed from the networked PCs, internet radio, etc. I run 5 Polk audio 8 inch coax in ceiling speakers and the spatial distribution is much better than with the Denon.

This product is connected to a Blu-ray player and cable box by HDMI and the network by ethernet cable. It was purchased in part because I could no longer adjust the volume by knob on my 11 year old Yamaha receiver and switching to 6 channel input was poorly understood by a Harmony remote. The Blu-ray player has the option of a wireless connection, but is too far from my wireless router to reliably receive a signal and so is attached to the network by ethernet cable.

Setup was reasonably straightforward. For my installation I purchased an ethernet switch and added an ethernet cable so the existing ethernet cable could feed both the blu-ray and the receiver. The receiver's network connection was hassle free.

Having a printed manual would have been more convenient by saving me the work of finding the right pages on the file to print and then taking them to the room where I was doing set up. Also, I was surprised the manual had no separate section on connecting cable boxes since I suspect that is how most people get channels. I recognize that the manual treats it as though it just another HDMI device, but suspect that some users will look for a separate heading. Presumably Yamaha finds me in the minority.

I agree with another reviewer that the speaker connections are tight, though presumable this is a one time operation, and space on the back is limited by the large number of connection options.

Firmware update was simple by following directions and using the network.

The i Phone playback through the USB is very nice.

I like the Scenes functions, but could not find a way to select, for example, TV and have the remote turn on my eight year old TV and the cable set-top box. However, the Yamaha product video does not promise this capability, and the remote does allow turning on an input's and TV's power.

The sound as expected is excellent. Power is more than adequate to drive some old BBC monitor speakers in a small space that opens to the rest of the house. Dialog also sounds good. Last night we watched an old movie and a family member who occasionally misses dialog seemed to hear all of it and had no questions.

Pandora and Net Radio work well. I don't have a Spotify account, but am glad that it is supported by this receiver.

The remote handles a lot of functions on other devices, and a family member who dislikes the current number of remotes was happy with the Yamaha's capabilities. This family member, like I, is happy with the purchase.
