Product Details

Sony 135mm f/2.8 Smooth Transition Focus Lens, Model SAL135F28

Take powerful video or camera shots with this Sony 135mm f/2.8 smooth transition focus A-mount lens. It's specifically designed to include exceptionally smooth transitions between focused areas and defocused areas so that subjects stand out and the blur gradually increases as you enter midfield and the background. This is achieved through an apodization element, which gradually tapers the focus down to zero at the edges of the photo. Consequently, highlights are beautifully diffused in the background yet are sharp and crisp in the foreground.

This Sony smooth transition lens is fully manual to let you exert complete control over your photos, although you can alter the circular aperture from the camera. Because the blades form a perfect circle at f/2.8, this Sony 135mm lens creates circular highlights in out-of-focus areas for creamy bokeh. Get close in to your subjects thanks to the 87cm minimum focusing distance, and use a 72mm filter to achieve additional effects, such as UV filtering or polarization. The lens carrying case included with this Sony 135mm f/2.8 smooth transition focus A-mount lens keeps it safe when you're not using it.

Smooth Trans Focus (STF)
Smooth Trans Focus (STF) employs a special "apodization" element that causes the intensity of the defocused point light sources to fade out radially so that no sharply defined edges or geometry remain.

Extraordinary Defocusing
Due to the STF design of the SAL135F28, the bokeh, or defocusing, on this lens is extraordinarily creamy and unique, going beyond the capabilities of conventional lens technology.

Manual focus only
Due to the unique characteristics of the STF technology, focusing can only be achieved manually. The effects are well worth the effort.

The King of the Bokeh!

from Undisclosed

Comments about Sony 135mm f/2.8 Smooth Transition Focus Lens:

This lens is the only reason to go with A-mount! The bokeh is extremely creamy and smooth. I guess they used 'smooth' in the name for a reason. It does take some practice to get the best out of the lens and the bokeh is best when used at 2.8 (4.5 effect) but when all the ducks are in a row and you've nailed the shot, you could find yourself staring at the photo all day long :-) I wouldn't have been able to use the lens without focus peaking function in a camera body. It helps tremendously and I don't know how people managed before without it. You may find that the lens will challenge your old way of composition. For example, instead of trying to keep distracting objects and background out of your subject, now you can consider including them to see if they become pleasing bokeh to compliment your subject. I am sure some other lenses, A-mount or not, can also produce pleasing bokeh under right conditions but based on many comparisons (you can search online), I still feel this lens comes on top. This lens is sharp and its transition from sharpness to defocused area is very smooth. If you are thinking about getting this lens, I'd say get it, learn how to it, and enjoy it.
