I purchased this generator to provide whole house power during an outage. The feature I liked was the 50A 240VAC outlet, larger than the 30A outlet I saw on most other generators of this size (this generator also has two 30A outlets). As I have a well pump, the extra capacity is well needed. Generator starts and runs well; I haven't performed a full tank test to see how long a tank of gas (10 gallons) will last. The control panel is well laid out, starting was easy, and the panel exterior lighting (small LEDs) works well. Only complaint is that the manual is lacking in some detail. While the maintenance and use instructions and warnings are generally good, some maintenance items are shown simplistically when they are not so simple to perform. The battery came completely disconnected with no fasteners to make the connections; after calling Generac support and waiting 3 weeks, I purchased my own connectors. The battery charging wires (off the rear of the control panel) also were not connected to the battery or the battery cables and there is no mention of them in the setup portion of the manual. Air filter replacement is not as simple as noted in the manual as stuff needs to be removed to access the filter cover. Since spare parts were provided for spark plugs and filter, I had to check to see if a filter was actually installed (it was); that required removal of a side panel and still resulted in tight access to the filter cover. Since two quart bottles of 30W oil were provided (for use in warmer climates), I needed to drain and replace the oil with 10W30 for the colder climate in New England. Oil was easy to drain and install. If the manual had sufficient detail that I didn't have to do these checks, this would clearly have been rated a "5" overall.

I spent over $2000 for what is supposed to be a high end work horse boy am I disappointed. I knew the unit was heavy but putting on the wheels and feet while it sits on the pallet is impossible, it's really a 2 man job just to unpack it. Paper oil funnel it comes with why? Totally useless. It doesn't state anywhere in the manual that I saw if you're using this for home backup you need a 3 pole switch or floating neutral/ground on the house end. Started very easy, it looks nice and weatherproof, comes with extra plugs and filters but I ran it for less than 1 hour and it's blowing oil threw a gasket behind the fan shroud somewhere. I am so disappointed my 2 week old unit has to be brought in for warranty service before it's first use. Oh and good luck getting a 280lb+ unit in for service. I was told it would cost me $100 to have it picked up. I may revise this if the unit gets fixed properly and I put it thru its first real test but I would not recommend this right now.

wrong and broken parts
Comments about Generac XG Series XG10000E Portable Generator:
I ordered my generator online from a box store, it was shipped from Generac and it came with the wrong axel and a broken foot pad and the box was not damage so it leaves me to believe that the person packing the item just don't care! Customer service sent me new parts, but it took over a week and one will take 10 to 15 business days!

Well built generator. Starting was easy. Overall excellent
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Packaging allowed slightly dented top of gas tank before customer pickup. Assembled quickly per instructions. Plastic grips slide off of handles easily. Hour Meter stopped incrementing after 1.4 hours. I have contacted Generac and am waiting for a response. I would like to be able to start and run engine for warm up at low throttle but unit is designed to start and run at 3600 RPM.
This product is more than expected.
Great quality and great value for both the generator and the transfer switch. This will provide power to all the necessities in my home that are needed in the event of a power outage.

Sturdy, good quality, reputable mfgr
I am a professional electrical engineer and have specified this specific portable generator for small city maintenance departments to run small sanitary lift stations during an extended power outage as well as a few plug-in temporary back-up power applications for small buildings. I thought I'd get one for myself and see how it holds up over time. I'm pleased overall with this unit upon assembly and first test. The hardware package was missing a bolt which I had to get from the hardware store and the paper oil funnel was not very useful because of the oil fill location. This unit was not rated for sound decibels as others are. It seems loud compared to others. Not quite sure what a "low tone" muffler means in industry jargon but it sure isn't "low noise" level. A quieter muffler would be an improvement. I would have liked to have seen an auto-idle feature to save on gas at lower loads. That would help with noise as well. Overall, this portable generator offers much higher quality than it's cheaper competitors and come from a name brand company with a good reputation for making long lasting products at a reasonable cost.
Easy to Set Up, Good Looking
from San Antonio
I appreciate the ease to get this generator up and running. The spare maintenance parts were a bonus. And what a good looking unit, I'm proud to haul this around to our job sites.
Nice looking unit
Starting up a concession stand and needed a 50 amp plug to run all of my equipment and it does with power to spare. This unit is made well and is quiet for not having a idle down on it. Only have been running it for a week now but it starts first try and runs all day.
Keeps Breaking - Not even used for an emergency yet!
First the choke and now the starter. Thank God It has not been needed for an emergency.
After a year of research I found the Generac 10,000watt unit would do everything. I've backed up my house, my shop, my welder, freezers, and had power to spare. Why spend more on another brand, and get less functionality? I'd buy it again.
Excellent portable generator for medium to large house
I purchased the generator to be an emergency backup generator for a 3000 sq ft house with 1.5 hp well pump, electric water heater, 3 ton ac, gas furnace, 2 refrigerators, and other misc loads. I have only run it for testing but find that using the 50 amp plug wired through a disconnect allows me to run pretty much what I want. I found setup easy for anyone with minimal mechanical skills and it started right up after putting 5 gallons of gas in it. The generator is of great construction and finish. I look forward to many years of use and peace of mind.
