Our 15 year old basic washing machine, a standard top loader, was done... several repairs by me, and I was tired of ordering parts. Time for a replacement.

Being the interested husband type, I offered my bride one of the new-fangled front loading high efficiency jobs, which she quickly declined. She had used one previously and said it made the clothes smell bad. More on that later. She did like the idea of high efficiency, but thought the front loading had something to do with bad smells, so a top loader was in order. She is a Whirlpool girl, I am a Maytag fan, so I went shopping while she was out of town. Interested, but smart.

I found this unit and it looked absolutely cavernous inside. It does, in fact, have decent capacity but not as much as it looks like just gazing in. The price was right, so I bought the floor model and took it home that day (Sears). I hauled out the old unit, replaced all the hoses, and hooked up the Maytag by the instructions. Straight forward, no surprises.

I read the instruction manual and, first surprise, it needs special detergent. Wrong detergents can cause excess sudsing and... there it is! BAD ODORS. Hmmmm. Off I go to find H/E detergent. Once I get home I discover that the detergent I was already using was the self-same high efficiency Tide I just bought. Live and learn. Note to others- look for the little HE symbol, you probably already have some of this stuff.

Test load, distributed as the manual shows. This is what I meant about the capacity. Still good, but you can't just load it to the top like an agitator standard one. Arranged around the tub so as not to cover the center of the agitator loses about a forth of what it appears to the uninitiated to be. No big deal, still held a good amount and probably as much as a similar washer with the big agitator in the middle. Now, to select a cycle. I'd love to say all the buttons made it hard, but it is husband-doing-the-wash easy. Tons of options, but all pretty common-sensical. Off we go.

Here's where my title comes in. Now, I have to admit I really liked the glass lid, which is part of what drew me to this model. I like seeing things operate. Hey, sue me, I am a guy. So I am watching, and... I was certain this thing must be broken. A squirt of water here, a slow turn there, I can hear water moving that I can't see, nothing seems to be getting dragged to the depths like I am used to in a regular washer. No way can clothing get clean with this sort of treatment. It doesn't even cover the clothes with water and suds. I tolerantly watched, feeling a little better with the jet-engine sounding spin cycles. I assure you, it looks nothing like a "normal" washer working.

While it whirred and squirted it's way through the cycle, I read the rest of the manual. There's a part on cleaning the washer, and it has a cycle just for that. Don't clean it, and guess what??? BAD ODORS. I am now convinced that my loving spouse's experiences with bad smells were a combination of wrong detergents and no periodic cleaning of the dastardly front loader she used. Mental note: purchase cleaner on next Wal-mart venture.

Ding-dong... the washer let's me know it's done. And amazingly enough, the clothes seem clean. Over the next few weeks, we wash pretty much everything in the house, testing the different cycles on all manner of clothes, bed linens, comforters. Everything not only gets clean, it gets noticeably CLEANER than before. And smells better, to boot. Total success, and I look pretty darn spiffy in my little lady's eyes. So we get a month in, time I ran the cleaning cycle. No bad odors getting in our machine! This is the only time it actually looks like it has enough water in it to do something. Finishes a good while later, but smells nice and clean.

So, overall I rate this a great washing machine. If it lasts like my other Maytag things, it will be around a long time. And all the while it is saving me money on cleaning, saving the environment some abuse, and is also supposed to be gentler on materials. All good here, very satisfied. As is the wife. That's a win-win in anyone's book.

Bought from Costco. Price was awesome but had some initial issues that didn't thrill me. First off, the paint was scratched on the lower front of the machine, even though there was no damage to the box. Costco had discontinued it, so it wasn't worth taking back, especially since I also bought the dryer and wanted them to match.

Second issue was when I hooked it up, it would not fill. I confirmed there was plenty of water coming out of the wall, with plenty of pressure and proper drainage but it still didn't work. I tried to book a repair appointment online, but after going through the entire process it errored out and gave me an 800 number to call. I called the number but waited on hold for 30 minutes so I hung up and called back the next day. After waiting again, the lady (who was nice) figured out after several minutes I was calling from Canada. Apparently she only handled U.S. inquiries, even though the ".ca" website gave me the number. I had to wait on hold again after being transferred and told my whole story over. Finally, got a repair appointment booked for several days later. The repairman was nice, took him a while but finally got it working. Turns out it was a factory issue, something to do with valves not being properly aligned. The last problem though was as it was running a test cycle, the repairman forgot to put the drainage hose back in and had a decent sized spill (he ran for it quickly, but still got water all over the laundry room floor).

Overall, the performance is good. Very large capacity and easy to use. I would recommend it but had a very poor experience getting it up and running.

TERRIBLE WASHER

By

from Duarte, CA

This washer is the worst! I've owned mine for less than 3 years and it sounds like an airplane in the spin cycle. A repair man told me it's the bearings and shaft which cost about $400 to replace. I'm going to buy a new one for less than $700 and it won't be a Maytag. I'm really disapointed with the quality of Maytag.

Poor quality, service and customer service

By

from Central Florida

Verified Buyer

Washer lasted only 2.5 yrs. Washer advertised with 10 year warranty but come to find out it only covers 2 parts after year 1. The motor and wash basket . Has 10 year warranty sticker in front which is one of the reasons I purchased it. Little did I know limited warranty was limited to two parts . Washer making a lot of noise in spin cycle only. Figure it's a bearing but the bearing is only sold as part of the inner tub which cost $400. Call Maytag Customer Service to find out if wash basket covered was same as in her tub but they couldn't tell me. Got more information on blinded from Maytag Customer Service. only way for me to find out if Park was covered by warranty was to call a service tech that would charge me $90 to tell me whether or not it was covered in my warranty. When I called service tech they told me I had to ask that question to Maytag. My previous washer dryers were Maytag. Not sure if I'll be a Maytag / Whirlpool customer anymore.

Worst washer i ever owned

By

from Rincon Ga.

Washer is only 4 yrs old. It is slinging water under washer all over my floor on spin cycle. I live 50 yds from a railroad track & washer is louder than the train. My last Maytag washer was 20 yrs old so i bought another Maytag. Worst thing i ever did & Maytag has a deaf ear if you call them. Needless to say...i just bought a new washer but it is not a Maytag!!!!!!!

This is a great washer. Easy to use with many options, but not too many. It washes well, is quiet, and we've been happily using it for several months.

Total Failure

By

from Orange, CA

Verified Buyer

I have been purchasing Maytags for over 30 years, and I have to say that this is the worst washer that I have
ever bought. Even when you spread the clothes proportionately on the bottom of the washer, it constantly goes off balance during the spin cycle. When you stop it to try to balance out the clothes again, It takes forever because all of the clothes are in knots because there is no center cylinder. The only cycle that I can use is the Heavy Duty cycle, because that is the only cycle that fills the washer to a satisfactory level of water. Any other cycle, doesn't fill the washer enough. I have even completed an entire cycle, pulled out the clothes to put into the dryer, and there are dry spots on the clothes after the wash; and no I do not pack the washing machine. I have only had this washer for one year. From what I have heard recently, Maytag knew of the problems and sold this washer anyways, trying to sell the complete stock of them. I am very disappointed and probably won't buy a Maytag ever again. I may call and talk to the CEO to see if they can do anything for me. :(

Does Not Wash Well - Not So High Efficient After All

By

from Upland, CA

We purchased this washer about four years ago. We didn't notice it right away, but It leaves white streaks on dark clothes, as it does not rinse the recommended HE detergent off very well. Maytag claims that this washer is high efficiency, but if it takes more than one run to do the job it is defeating the purpose. Additionally, the large capacity claim is also defeated by the lack of water in the tub. For instance when we place a comforter or large load of clothes in the washer, only about half gets washed / cycled. The rest is too high in the tub to be cleaned. Based on our personal experience and in reading numerous other reviews about this particular washer, we would highly recommend avoiding it. We feel as though we have been duped by the poor design and false advertising about this washer.

Very happy with my washer. Only problem has been sheets. They tend to create an air ball on the bottom and I have to readjust them because it gets out of sink.

Very poor washer

We have had our washer for a year and it always says that it has an unlevel load no mater how you put the clothes in it. On an average day it will take you the whole day to wash a load of towels.
