In general I was looking for a variable speed grinder that was easy to hold, and easy to change blades and grinders. I generally like Bosch tools and bought the best I could find. I bought this variable speed model to grind and polish some granite and stone, and to occasionally work on some metal. I would give this a 5 for power, but I only gave this a four because of the variable speed dial design. First of all, I could not find the dial! There is no mention of it in the operating instructions. I had to call Bosch and ask the tech rep who said it was right next to the power cord. Sure enough, if you turn it over and look really close, there is a tiny little recessed dial sunk into the body. I never would have found it! I told her there were no calibration numbers on the dial to determine RPM's. Then I took it over to a strong light, used a magnifying glass and saw that as you turned the dial there was a microscopic number printed with black ink on a red dial, showing 1-6. Come on! The second that gets covered with granite dust you will never see those numbers again. Give me great big white numbers on a black background and recess them so they won't wear off. At least on other brands of grinders there is a little sticker on the side showing RPM vs number. Here there was nothing. Who designs these things? Anyway, as I use it for a while longer I may up- date the review. Yes, I understand that most of the angle grinders have the same dial (now that I've looked on the web,) but it is no excuse. RPM's is important when working with stone and there should be a nice BIG display that shows you exactly what speed you are running.

Bought this grinder based on past good history with Bosch tools and the need for a variable speed grinder. When adjusted to the lowest speed setting, the grinder will kick into its highest speed. While this can be avoided by not setting the speed to the lowest setting, it can be annoying and should not occur. My main concern is the sound of the grinder. The grinder gearing sounds a little harsh, like the gears are dry, unlike my constant speed grinder. Hopefully, this will not be an issue, and I will get good service life out of this grinder.

Comments about Bosch Tools Bosch 5" Variable-Speed Angle Grinder:
I bought this model on the strength of a Bosch 1590EVS jig saw that I bought 6 years ago. This Swiss made little gem is still going strong. The grinder I bought was from Santa. When I matched it up against the Milwaukee, there was no comparison. The Bosch has more power, variable speed, larger capacity diameter disks and just feels right in my hands. And since it's made in Germany and not China, like the Milwaukee, the purchase was a no-brainer. The extra 30 dollars was well worth the purchase. My collection of power tools includes several Porter-Cable, Milwaukee and Craftsman, all of which were purchased back when they all had " Made in America " stamped on them; we're talking early to mid 90's when good tools were still available. My 2 Bosch tools are worthy additions that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Since I've only had the tool since Christmas Eve, a full blown review awaits.

Researched a few grinders and decided on this one based on variable speed and the 5" capability. It is very well build and durable. The only negative in my opinion is the manner in which the switch locks in the on position, b/c it doesn't seem very robust. Otherwise very nice and certainly recommend.

This thing cuts so good and runs so smooth I bought one more. I have three 4.5 inch grinders that are good grinders, but are not in the same league as this one. Being able to set the speed to the job is a nice feature. If you don't have one, get one.

The reason a person buys this tool is for the VS feature. Nowhere in the manual is its location mentioned. If you are offering a feature.......at least tell us how to activate it and say something about it in the manual.
Variable speed is a big advantage
I bought this grinder to do some granite polishing. The variable speed is fantastic.

After 18 years of only Bosch grinders, we are done with them. These have issues working on some generators and we have burnt out 4 out of 5 purchased in the last 1.5 years
Love this Grinder

I recently bought this grinder. I have many high quality power tools and was impressed with the built quality of Bosch. I had to cut several 1 inch wide steel rods that supported the light fixture boxes in an old house. I wasn't, sure my Fein Oscillating tool would cut them easily. I am upgrading the fixture boxes to support large ceiling fans. The grinder worked extremely well cutting through the steel rods like butter. I was very comfortable with the size allowing me to work in a confined space in the attic..I love the soft start up and the variable speed. I always like to use a speed appropriate for the task at hand.

Need to have a big man's hand to hold it well, which is good for me, but when u swich on, the sound really harsh, and the power button... Anyway i like it after all.
