Bought this as a replacement for the identical model that was 8 or 9 years old and needed an expensive repair, pretty much the same as all our other appliances installed at the same time. So I've been disappointed that this and our other appliances didn't last longer--that's apparently the way it is.Since we had never used the fridge ice maker because we had this one, we used the fridge for about 6 months and then THAT ice maker broke, too. By that time I was really ready to go back to having nice, clean, clear ice like this model makes. Once you get used to clear ice, it's pretty hard to go back to using a fridge. This one has several improvements over the older model. The first thing I noticed is that it has a built in filter. Since we're supplying filtered water already because the previous model didn't have it, we hope the filter will last a lot longer. The most noticeable change, however, is that this one is brightly lit with LED bulbs inside. It doesn't improve the already excellent ice, but it sure looks great!I like the size cubes that this makes, which is why I chose it in the first place--if you want larger cubes that don't melt quite as fast, say for whiskey, you might look elsewhere. These cubes are excellent for sparkling water, ice tea, sodas, etc. Highly recommended.

I received this to replace a 9 year old ice maker as part of a home warranty. Arrived looking perfect and was installed. The ice maker came without a filter (expected it to be included). Directions say 24 hrs for first batch of ice. 24 hours and nothing. Thought it might be because there was no filter so overnighted a filter. Waited another 24 hours after arrival of filter. Still no ice. Call Whirlpool warranty. Technician said need a new pump because the pump was broken and there was no bracket to hold it in place. Needless to say, I have waited 3 weeks for ice and don't expect the new pump to be installed for another week. I also hope a new pump will fix the sound. this ice maker is much LOUDER than my old one.

Comments about Whirlpool Gold 15" Black Ice Maker:
We are so happy with our ice maker. We put it in our laundry room and did not have to give up any of our kitchen cabinet space. It is so wonderful to have fresh ice all the time!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Great ice maker for the price
from Memphis, TN
I purchased this ice maker to replace one that had been giving me a lot of trouble. Even though this one cost less, it is quieter and is nice and light inside. I like the top handle. I have black granite tops and the handle blends in well. My only complaint is that the instructions said that a filter came in my accessory bag and there wasn't one there so I have to buy one for $50.
Quiet and great ice
We replaced a aging Viking ice maker with the Whirlpool. While the cubes are not as large and square, it produces a consistent amount of clear ice and is very quiet.

Bought the unit on 8/9 and on on 8/26 less than a month later the compressor fails.

I bought this a month ago and really like it. Installation and directions for use were user friendly. Ice machine runs very quietly and I am very pleased with the performance. I owned tow kitchen aide ice makers previously and I think I like this better.
Happy yet concerned, it does make ice pretty fast. Nice sized cubes. Not sure if it's by design but the ice maker seems to be constantly running as if it's not quite cold enough to built up enough ice to fill up and hold it.
I bought this lady week after my 25 yr old machine finally died. I had paths replaced on it about 5 times in that time . This is the updated version of hat I had. It seems to be more efficient producing more ice faster so far so good. Like others say the machine is a bit noisey but not much different from prior model
works great....so far
Lots of Ice with Too Much Noise

This icemaker replaced a competitor's unit that was 10 years old. The Whirlpool makes plenty of ice, but the unit is much louder than the old 'brand X' unit I had previously. This unit is in our kitchen and the noise is very noticeable.
My Ice Under Light!
from Asheville, NC
Former ice maker was 11 years old. The same model now has a light and the inner-door closes with shutting the outside door. The ice tastes great with the added filter system. Only concern is that it seems to be "wet" ice when removed from the bin. Is the light staying on after the door is closed?
