An under the counter ice maker is expensive but wonderful. ALWAYS buy the five year warranty on this product. Also (this is a must) get a sheet metal pan built if this is going in cabinets. That way, if there is a malfunction the water runs out the front and you can see the water. (the pan should have a one inch lip on back and sides and flat in the front) The cleaner is expensive - there may be other cheaper products available that do the same thing. The ice maker is a very popular appliance in our home. I'm rating the performance fair because it does break down - hence the need for the five-year warranty.

I live in southern California and bought this ice maker as a way not to run out of ice during entertaining. I like the machine but the ice is way too small.....I didn't consider the size of the ice when ordering this machine but it is a big thing.since the cubes are small they melt faster them larger cubes. this machine is not a freezer but rather a place that makes and stores ice which is constantly replenishing itself. This will run all day and night. It does make lots of ice and is a little noisy. If you like small melting ice this is the machine for you.......

Comments about KitchenAid 15" Custom Overlay Automatic Icemaker:
I replaced a 15" KitchenAid ice maker with this model. The previous model worked great. We loved the ice it produced. The compressor failed, so I replaced it with the latest model. I ordered this 15" model, and I have had nothing but issues with it. It has never worked properly, and KitchenAid is unwilling to support the product. In normal operation mode, it does not fill the ice maker. It runs excessively hot. It uses an excessive amount of water. The design of this ice maker if terrible. The technical support and customer care support from KitchenAid is extremely disappointing. I regret the day I ordered this unit.

Let there be ice
By Great Ice Maker
from Demarest, NJ
I am a huge ice fan, and take my ice seriously. I like this ice maker a lot more than I thought I would. We previously had the larger version in our last home and was concerned with going down in size. But it has not been an issue at all. We had no issue that I am aware of regarding the panel ready, as some other users have noted. However, we built a new home and specked everything in very specifically with our cabinet maker. It is actually built into an antiqued looking hutch with refrigerated draws on the side and looks awesome. Everyone who comes into my home loves it. My only gripes are that the scooper sometimes falls into the ice when you shut the door, and is not as easily to find as in the wider model. Additionally, the filter needs replacing (which I understand) but I can't find where to get the filter online easily.

Do not buy this Ice Maker
Though sold as panel ready it is not - that is if you want to be able to open the door. The hinge design does not allow for the panel to be flush with the other cabinet drawers/doors.In order to open the door you have two choices 1) Move it so that the door is 7/8" forward of all other cabinet doors or 2) Leave a 7/8" space on the hinge side. Both options are UGLY! Apparently they used to use a double action hinge (which would solve my problem) but no longer do so. I called the Non-Service desk and they told me they could not help with installation other than to read the manual to me,I paid over $2K for this - one would think they could get the hinge design correct. BTW, I also purchased the undercab panel ready fridge and it uses a different hinge design that works perfectly.

"Panel Ready" isn't really
from Austin, TX
I purchased a KitchenAid ice maker because I like the shape of the ice it produces, they're square flat pieces, like a scrabble tile. We purchased the panel ready model to install a cabinet panel on the front of it. The design on the door and hinge make it very hard/impossible to completely obscure it with a panel. The door has a slight outward curve to it, and the hinge requires the door to be proud of the cabinet base. When you add your own panel to the front, it must align with the door on the hinge side, leaving a gap between the ice maker and the cabinet. This model needs a different hinge design.
Filter very difficult to change filter.

This is my first stand alone ice maker. I like everything about it except when I attempted to change the filter. It was very difficult to grasp the filter to change.

I bought this as a replacement of similar model that was breaking down frequently and had it installed 1/15. It broke down 10 months later (fortunately under warranty). It broke down again this week and condenser already needs replacement. I can see the writing on the wall and replace it with a more reliable unit. I don't recommend this ice maker to anyone
Perfect size and capacity
I bought about 3 months ago! We've had an older model in our pool house for about 5 years so it was a no brainier when we finished basement to install one in the bar area.
Second ice maker and no ice again
The first ice maker had constant repairs from the time we installed it. They finally replaced it and now we are going through the same issues with the second ice maker.
Love this ice maker
from Richmond, TX
We remodeled our kitchen this summer and this was my big luxury item. Now that I have it, it really is a luxury. We always have ice not matter how many people are at our house or if I need to fill an ice chest. I'm so happy we went ahead and installed it. It works great and has great tasting ice.
