This is my First Zeiss E-Mount lens. My previous lens was the 18-55mm Kit lens for the Sony C3. This new lens has some heft to it. I am an above average beginner camera person so I will tell you my impressions as a beginner. This lens produces extremely clear pictures, rich in colors, along with great contrast which produces very sharp pictures. Some people say in reviews that I read that it is slightly soft in the edges here and their. To me the pictures look perfect. I shoot only in jpeg with the sony A6000 camera. The camera may correct any small inperfections in the camera itself with jpegs. With the sony A6000 you get a very fast frame rate and with this lens 99.9 percent look cristal clear and in focus along with great color and contrast. I use to use the 18-55mm kit lens on the Sony C3 but this lens is definately superior. Abt had a great deal that if you buy this lens along with the Sony A6000 body you save $300. It was a great deal. The only negative is the size in carrying it around but I do not find this a problem for myself. I therefore highly recommend this lens and is a great combination when you use the Sony A6000

It's hard to describe how much I like the A7r - but one of the things that comes with it is that punishing 36MP sensor. I knew in my heart that a mid-level (but premium priced) zoom lens would not be perfect - but my hopes were high. Basically, it's an average peer to lenses like the Canon 24-105 f/4, 24-70 f/4, and Sony 16-50G. Shooting with the lens, a few things are very clear. First the BAD: 1) It is Not a bag of prime lenses. You will not see nearly the quality of the FE 35mm and 55mm lenses, or other system primes mounted via adapter 2) The distortion is extreme. The camera will try to correct this if you shoot JPG or process RAW in Sony software - but I use Adobe LR. The distortion is wild at 24mm and 70mm - you will see pixel smearing and lose field of view if you correct it. 3) The corners are very soft at 24mm - 28mm, no matter how you stop down. There is no way to improve that. If you resize down to 25-50% it looks a little better (as expected) 4) 70mm is not terribly sharp. Actually, you probably get about as much detail at 70mm as you would at 60mm or 55mm and cropping. This means, that you really have a very good 35-60mm zoom lens, and a kind of so-so 24-28mm and 60-70mm lens 5) Autofocus is rarely quite right - for critical focus I always have to use DMF to fine tune things The GOOD: 1) Center sharpness is great - and this is the part that matters most 2) The contrast and resulting colors are very good, almost Zeiss-like 3) The performance between 35mm and 55mm is excellent - like REALLY exxcellent, stop down just a little to get a very good sharpness across the frame 4) The optical stabilization is amazing. I'm shooting 50mm at 1/5sec with no problem. I'm loving it! Bottom line - this is a zoom lens. It's expensive, but fair considering the reasonable size. Don't expect miracles - it's a zoom lens. For what it is, it's an average and solid performer. I'm keeping it. If you don't need 24mm or aren't very particular, consider the kit lens. It's probably 70-80% as good and less than half the price.

Super nice lens
Comments about Sony Vario-Tessar T E 16-70mm F4 ZA OSS Carl Zeiss Camera Lens:
Using this on my a6000 and am very satisfied with performance of this lens. Very good image quality across the full focal range. This lens is on my camera most of the time and works great in most situations.

It's just OK
from Tupelo, MS, USA
I love this focal range but not this lens. I'm shooting at ISO's of 500 and 800 and I'm still getting noisy images, way more noise than I feel one should get at these ISO's. At this price I'm disappointed with it overall as it is not nearly as sharp as my ancient Nikkor 28-70 f/2.8 D lens which I bought used two years ago at $200 less than what this one cost. It just doesn't perform nor give me the Image Quality I desire and at this price I feel that it should offer better. It could have something to do the a6000 I'm using the lens on too. If you hold the lens in one hand and the grab camera with the other just as you when shooting, you can feel a slight give back and forth between the lens and the camera. At least once or twice during shoot I've done the camera drops the aperture setting as if there is no lens connected any longer and a slight turn between the two as mentioned above bring the lens back to life on the camera. I've also heard the squealing near 70mm today as if it was stuck in a rut trying to focus. I zoomed moved the focal ring all the way to 70 and the squealing continued, so I moved the focal ring back towards 24 and it stopped thankfully. So yes I seem to have an issue with the lens and or the camera I own which is why I give this lens the rating I do but I've also read numerous review about this lens and not praised as a top performer at all so until a better one is released this is what you'll have to accept, well I hope that you won't have the issues I'm having.

This lens can really disappoint with it's surprising lack of sharpness... misses expectations for the price!

A Great lens for a great camera!
from Brooklyn, NY 11215, USA
The Sony A7 is a wonderful little camera that avoids the hassle of lugging around a DSLR. This lens gives the camera a nice versatility and, because it is a Sony-Zeiss, is of the finest quality. Unless you are a professional photographer, you won't stop using this camera except for occasions such as wildlife shooting that require special equipment.

Great walkaround lens
from Silicon Valley, CA, USA
This Zeiss lens is a great walkaround lens and as a replacement for the kit lens. While a bit pricey, the improvement in image quality as compared to the kit lens (SEL1650 for my NEX6) is leaps and bounds. A f2.8 aperture would make this lens even better, but then the lens may end up too big and heavy to be useful as a walkaround lens.

Ideal Lens for A7S
In general I prefer single focal length lenase, like the 35mm f2.8 Sony/Zeiss E mount lens that I used on A7R earlier today of a whale leaping out of the water. It was a very long way away, but the high resolution of A7R made this image possible. The 2nd image is cropped from the 1st; the inset image is from the 2nd. On A7S which is the high-iso champion, but with 1/3 the resolution of A7R, this 24-70 mm Sony/Zeiss zom lens is ideal because the "cropping" can be done in camera.
Best lens for a7
from San Ramon, CA, USA
I bought the a7s and this lens is sharp and just great. Highly recommend it. Light weight and just is perfect fit for the a7 series. Love it.
NOT enthusiast grade glass!
I'd hoped for a better experience from this lens than I had ... Had to return the first iteration and try several others in store to find one that didn't have: excessive vignetting, overall image softness across the range and especially in the corners between 24-35mm. In addition, when I found a lens that seemed to be a better representation I still had to tune the lens in camera when I got home to eliminate excessive back focus (which may be the cause of so many of the lenses looking "soft" while trying to find an acceptable lens)! This lens is "hit or miss". Be prepared to accept a mediocre version and then having to do some tuning in camera to get it where it should be out of the box. Now I can enjoy the lens but this is frankly an unacceptable experience for a product with this cost and coming from a company like Sony while wearing the Zeiss badge. I'd also considered the 28-70mm kit lens in the beginning but unfortunately had heard that it is much, much worse (typical kit lens performance!).
Great lens, wish it was an F2

Title says it all. I just wish it was faster.
Worst Lens Ever
Looking for a lens so slow you will constantly have to tell your friends to "stop moving" and then qualify "be even more still than that" once they have frozen in place? This lens is for you. Looking for a lens that warps your image slightly in all the wrong places, making all your subjects look 4-15 pounds heavier when all the way at 24? This lens is for you! Do you get a thrill spending too much money on a lens that will be the sole cause of you switching back to Canon? This lens is for you!!!! Highly recommend for international trips to make you so frustrated with your image you contemplate throwing it off of a ferry in Croatia. Also great to regift it to your sister in law once the Sony store won't take it back because you were out of the country during the 30 day return window.
