First, it took some getting used to the newer features that older washers did not have such as the locking lid and pause button. To get the best results read the Use and Care guide for which cycles use a full rinse vs spray rinse and how to avoid delaying the "sensing" process.

Second, I wash bedding in 140 degree hot water as recommended by allergy doctors for killing dust mites. I achieve this temperature by turning off the cold water valve/hose and letting in only hot water.

1. I like the fact I can get the hottest water I want if I turn off my cold water valve/hose. My water heater is set to deliver 156 degrees and I get the water straight out of my water heater without any interference. Some of the newer machines on the market have that "perfect temp" feature which blocks your water hose to keep you from making the water as hot as you want, and this machine DOES NOT DO THAT, thank goodness!

2. Once you select the wash cycle, let the water fill up a little before adding detergent. I like that the water fills all the way up and covers the clothes. I do not like HE washers that use a 'tablespoon' of water to wash or rinse a load. This one is like an old fashioned washer that fills up.

3. You unlocked the lid by touching the pause button at any point in the cycle. I noticed if you hit the pause button while it's in "sensing" mode, it takes longer for the lid to unlock.

4. On a "regular" wash cycle the rinse water fills up completely to the top and your clothes are fully submerged. However, some cycles use a "spray rinse" but I have found that if spray is not enough, I can run it through the "rinse and spin" cycle that fully submerges my clothes under water. Hard to find that in any washing machine today.

5. It has a drain and rinse feature that's handy when I need to interrupt a load and want to get moving. I also use this when doing towels because it spins them drier than other cycles.

6. It has a 2 rinse cycle option that is critical for one with sensitive skin and cannot tolerate any soap residues in clothing. And if you're really extra sensitive, you can always run it through a 3rd rinse using the "rinse and spin" cycle only.

7. It takes a few minutes longer to wash a "heavy" load than my old washer. I think that is due to new features that sense and test if a load is balanced before it begins to spin. Also, if you open the lid during the "sensing phase" aka when it's "thinking" then it starts the sensing process over and that adds more time. It seems to take a few seconds to make the transition from one step to another due to the electronic sensing features processing what to do next.

8. It makes an assortment of noises especially during the spin part. That's all part of the new "sensing" technology that is adjusting the balance by spinning a touch first, stopping and then spinning again after adjusting for balance.

9. I have washed a Lands' End king size Polartec 200 blanket and it fit just fine and washed well. I washed 4 pairs of 40" x 36" thick wrangler jeans and 6 big thick towels and it was fine.

10. It does not tear, twist or rip clothes like my old GE washer. I am so happy to open the lid and find my clothes in one piece. And they are clean, too! No more ripped up, twisted apron strings. yea!

WHAT I DON'T LIKE

1. It does not have a way to soak your clothes longer than 10 minutes. When the lid is left open, it drains after 10 minutes. If you close the lid the cycle begins. There is no way to select a way to fill it up and stop it without it draining all the water out. I hate that I can't soak anything overnight. What's with that? [Please have your designers speak to a woman over 50 with kids when designing a machine.]

2. If you select a "small" load size and the cycle starts, you will not be able to change it without canceling the cycle and all the water draining out of the machine. So if you start a cycle, be sure you have all the clothes you wish to put in the machine as you cannot just stop the machine, turn the dial to "large" and expect the water to continue where it left off to fill up to a "large" level like the older style washing machines. Nope, it will drain the whole thing out wasting water, soap, and time by having to refill and start over. It's pretty evident the older generation of engineers from old school common sense have retired as this feature is evidence of the "American Junior Engineer Syndrome" present in technology today. ugh! Seriously guys? You have to reinvent the wheel? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Overall, finding a washer that is similar to the old style washing machine is next to impossible. However, with some adaptation this washer will deliver water as hot as your water heater setting (by shutting off cold water valve/hose) and has an option to have a full tub rinse as in your clothes are fully submerged under water.

Pros
Durable, full tub rinse on 'regular' cycle, hottest water with adaptation, 2 rinse cycles, cleans well

Cons
can't soak clothes overnight in machine, locking lid and pause button = annoying, can't add clothes and select a different water level after cycle starts. Takes longer to fill than my old machine no matter what temperature I select.

The good part. I'm thankful I did not get the super expensive "Gee Whiz" version as it has even more problems and is harder to use.
That said, the problem here is that the machine will drain itself at the slightest provocation. If you dare to open top while filling to put in your soap or clothes the machine may drain. If top is open while filling adding laundry can confuse it (machine supposedly knows weight and volume of load) and drains. If when washing you hit pause-unlock and lift lid you have between zero seconds and four minutes to close lid and press resume--or it will drain. No consistency- best not to consider adding anything once the cycle starts. This wastes lots of water and you have to re-add your soap and bleach.

Because this machine (is supposed to) use less water, you will need to select "two rinses" to get the soap out. The fact there is such a setting means manufacturer is aware of this. Of course this problem and the ridiculous locking system are due to federal (safety?) laws..

The self drain feature wastes water and I cannot figure any safety benefit .....drowning prevention?

Cleaning. Something that wasn't necessary on old school washers. This uses hot water and no load. Wasteful.

Unpleasant noises. Being unable to interrupt cycles is costly. Does hold more than the old but very good previous washer. Doesn't fill with hot water but alternates between warm and hot when filling.

It"s not even two years old and it has quit spinning the clothes enough to put them in the dryer. They're soaking wet and I have to do another spin cycle, then they still don't feel as dry as they should.

Great Capacity-Difficult to control

By

from Nebraska

Verified Buyer

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

This washer does what you want a washer to do. Has great capacity. I don't like the fact that you can not control when it needs to start or stop, once you select a cycle it runs by itself. The other thing I do not like is that when is filling if you forget to close the lid or to add it will just drain the content completely, instead of stoping or wait in pause, which ends up being a huge waste of water and detergent.

Quiet as a church mouse

I bought this washer months ago but It's in my vacation home. This is why it's a late review. The first thing I noticed is how quiet it is. I converted a pantry to a wash area to avoid the cold garage and have no regrets. It's quiet and steady.

Worst Washing Machine I ever had

By

from Surprise, AZ.

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

In February 2015 we bought a Whirlpool Washing Machine Model# WTW4800BQ1 to replace our 10 year old Whirlpool. Even though that was certainly not the best machine it beat this new one by a mile. The old one twisted all the sheets and other like items, no matter how I loaded the machine. after 10 years the machine would not empty and we decided since it was 10 years old we would buy a new one rather than have the old one repaired - Oh now I hate making that decision. Hear are my complaints regarding the new one: 1) lid lock - cumbersome when you want to add something to the load. 2) Cannot soak a load - no matter what the machine will empty in a very short period of time. 3) My towels feel like they were dried outdoors on the clothesline without fabric softener. 4) buildup of fabric softener and not possible to adequately possible to clean the dispenser.
NOW: I am 78 years old so I have been using washing machines for a very long time (1) from the wooden tub one that requires you to hand agitate every load - we won't even go into the other steps to complete your laundry; (2) hand washing all dirty clothes that our family, which included a husband in the military and a baby, acquired; (3) then an electric washing wringer washing machine; finally onto machines that did not require a rinse tub or a wringer.
After reading many reviews about this new machine I would appreciate a fix from the powers that be. We do not spend hundreds of dollars for anything carelessly so please take care of our problems with this machine.
Thank you,
Janet Wenstrand
