Whirlpool White Top Load Washer - WTW4800BWH

Enjoy exceptional cleaning and efficiency with a washer that combines the best of both worlds. The Whirlpool® 3.6 cu. ft. top load washer not only helps reduce shrinking and color bleeding with the Care Control temperature management system, but it also saves energy by using the right temperature for detergent. Try customizing cleaning with the Fabric Sense™ wash system. It makes sure you always have the right temperature, cycle time and agitation speed, while a smooth motion agitator takes care of bringing laundry to the bottom of the wash basket where cleaning takes place. Thanks to specially designed ridges, this model can even clean twice the average size load.

Features:

  • Care Control Temperature Management
Adjusts the cold and hot water inlets to reach temperatures that are warm enough to dissolve detergents. Water is kept from overheating to help reduce shrinking and color bleeding while saving energy
  • Fabric Sense™ Wash System
Once you select a cycle and fabric type, the Fabric Sense™ wash system automatically matches your needs to the optimal temperature, cycle time and agitation speed for customized care and cleaning
  • 3.6 cu. ft. capacity
Wash up to 2 baskets of laundry in one load. 3.6 cu. ft. capacity Cabrio® washers give you the extra space you need for larger loads and bulky items like comforters. The wash basket adapts to both large and small loads for optimal fabric care

HOTTEST WATER YOU WANT! RINSE FILLS TO THE TOP!

First, it took some getting used to the newer features that older washers did not have such as the locking lid and pause button. To get the best results read the Use and Care guide for which cycles use a full rinse vs spray rinse and how to avoid delaying the "sensing" process.

Second, I wash bedding in 140 degree hot water as recommended by allergy doctors for killing dust mites. I achieve this temperature by turning off the cold water valve/hose and letting in only hot water.

1. I like the fact I can get the hottest water I want if I turn off my cold water valve/hose. My water heater is set to deliver 156 degrees and I get the water straight out of my water heater without any interference. Some of the newer machines on the market have that "perfect temp" feature which blocks your water hose to keep you from making the water as hot as you want, and this machine DOES NOT DO THAT, thank goodness!

2. Once you select the wash cycle, let the water fill up a little before adding detergent. I like that the water fills all the way up and covers the clothes. I do not like HE washers that use a 'tablespoon' of water to wash or rinse a load. This one is like an old fashioned washer that fills up.

3. You unlocked the lid by touching the pause button at any point in the cycle. I noticed if you hit the pause button while it's in "sensing" mode, it takes longer for the lid to unlock.

4. On a "regular" wash cycle the rinse water fills up completely to the top and your clothes are fully submerged. However, some cycles use a "spray rinse" but I have found that if spray is not enough, I can run it through the "rinse and spin" cycle that fully submerges my clothes under water. Hard to find that in any washing machine today.

5. It has a drain and rinse feature that's handy when I need to interrupt a load and want to get moving. I also use this when doing towels because it spins them drier than other cycles.

6. It has a 2 rinse cycle option that is critical for one with sensitive skin and cannot tolerate any soap residues in clothing. And if you're really extra sensitive, you can always run it through a 3rd rinse using the "rinse and spin" cycle only.

7. It takes a few minutes longer to wash a "heavy" load than my old washer. I think that is due to new features that sense and test if a load is balanced before it begins to spin. Also, if you open the lid during the "sensing phase" aka when it's "thinking" then it starts the sensing process over and that adds more time. It seems to take a few seconds to make the transition from one step to another due to the electronic sensing features processing what to do next.

8. It makes an assortment of noises especially during the spin part. That's all part of the new "sensing" technology that is adjusting the balance by spinning a touch first, stopping and then spinning again after adjusting for balance.

9. I have washed a Lands' End king size Polartec 200 blanket and it fit just fine and washed well. I washed 4 pairs of 40" x 36" thick wrangler jeans and 6 big thick towels and it was fine.

10. It does not tear, twist or rip clothes like my old GE washer. I am so happy to open the lid and find my clothes in one piece. And they are clean, too! No more ripped up, twisted apron strings. yea!

WHAT I DON'T LIKE

1. It does not have a way to soak your clothes longer than 10 minutes. When the lid is left open, it drains after 10 minutes. If you close the lid the cycle begins. There is no way to select a way to fill it up and stop it without it draining all the water out. I hate that I can't soak anything overnight. What's with that? [Please have your designers speak to a woman over 50 with kids when designing a machine.]

2. If you select a "small" load size and the cycle starts, you will not be able to change it without canceling the cycle and all the water draining out of the machine. So if you start a cycle, be sure you have all the clothes you wish to put in the machine as you cannot just stop the machine, turn the dial to "large" and expect the water to continue where it left off to fill up to a "large" level like the older style washing machines. Nope, it will drain the whole thing out wasting water, soap, and time by having to refill and start over. It's pretty evident the older generation of engineers from old school common sense have retired as this feature is evidence of the "American Junior Engineer Syndrome" present in technology today. ugh! Seriously guys? You have to reinvent the wheel? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Overall, finding a washer that is similar to the old style washing machine is next to impossible. However, with some adaptation this washer will deliver water as hot as your water heater setting (by shutting off cold water valve/hose) and has an option to have a full tub rinse as in your clothes are fully submerged under water.

Pros
Durable, full tub rinse on 'regular' cycle, hottest water with adaptation, 2 rinse cycles, cleans well

Cons
can't soak clothes overnight in machine, locking lid and pause button = annoying, can't add clothes and select a different water level after cycle starts. Takes longer to fill than my old machine no matter what temperature I select.

The good part. I'm thankful I did not get the super expensive "Gee Whiz" version as it has even more problems and is harder to use.
That said, the problem here is that the machine will drain itself at the slightest provocation. If you dare to open top while filling to put in your soap or clothes the machine may drain. If top is open while filling adding laundry can confuse it (machine supposedly knows weight and volume of load) and drains. If when washing you hit pause-unlock and lift lid you have between zero seconds and four minutes to close lid and press resume--or it will drain. No consistency- best not to consider adding anything once the cycle starts. This wastes lots of water and you have to re-add your soap and bleach.

Because this machine (is supposed to) use less water, you will need to select "two rinses" to get the soap out. The fact there is such a setting means manufacturer is aware of this. Of course this problem and the ridiculous locking system are due to federal (safety?) laws..

The self drain feature wastes water and I cannot figure any safety benefit .....drowning prevention?

Cleaning. Something that wasn't necessary on old school washers. This uses hot water and no load. Wasteful.

Horrible!!!

By

from Torrance, CA

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

I bought this washer 20 months ago and it already broke. I called whirlpool and because it was over 12 months, they could not help me without a huge fee (half the price I paid for the washer 20 months ago). I trusted this brand but never again. I would never buy another whirlpool product again!

Excellent Resualts

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

Now I can wash my garments with out worry. The extra rinse cycles are a must when washing heavily soil work cloths and the self cleaning cycle ensures me that I will have a clean wash load of whites.
The dryer leaves my cloths wrinkle free cutting my ironing time in half.
By far the best Washer & Dryer for me.

Junk!!!!!!!!!!!!

By

from Wooster, oh

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

I bought this due to the reviews I had seen and the name. Whirlpool has always been a leading name in the business. However I have had this for just over a year and a half, and it dies. I am only one person I do maybe a load a week? So I pull out the book and take a look. I know what its not doing, and according to the book the parts that should be wrong. I tried to call their service canter ans they are the only company on this earth that does not have tech support. After talking to a local service center I have replace the main control board and the shifter assembly. Over $200.00 dollars in non returnable parts and I have the same exact problem. From what I have seen first hand and what I have read online their quality has gone by the wayside and I will never buy one of their products again.

Not impressed!

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

The gearbox is noisy while washing. When I brought this home to install there was already water in the pump, so I'm guessing some other person returned it when they bought it. It was marked down when I purchased it, but the dealer didn't tell me it might have been used.

Great Washer

By

from nebraska

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

I am a true and loyal Whirlpool gal. My whirlpool washer of tens years was dropped off a moving truck during our move which made us retire our unit. We went shopping and I was discouraged because all I could find was non agitator washing machines. Finally while shopping a nice sales man shows me whirlpool washer with agitator at a great price. I was sold.... agitator... whirlpool... I LOVE machine... cleans great, low noise during wash loads... leave clothes smelling fresh and is the best washer... I have to say whirlpool is the best brand for quality of a washing machine with low maintenance of the machine... manufacturer warranty plus and I purchased 5 year extended as I did with my last washer and maybe used once or twice in ten years owning my old machine... whirlpool stands by there product and the quality of unit is phenomenal as well as extended warranty option is outstanding.

Long time Whirlpool user unhappy with Model 4900

By

from Franklin WV

Verified Buyer

Comments about Whirlpool White Top Load Washer:

After purchasing/using a Whirlpool 4900 washer a year ago, we were extremely unhappy with its ability to clean our wash. We removed the 4900 to our barn and purchased and are currently using the 4800 top loader(with agitator). We are happy with the 4800. Incidently, we have been loyal Whirlpool customers since the 1960s
