Product Details

Apple 27" iMac 3.2GHz Intel Quad-Core i5 Desktop Computer, Model ME088LLA

Sit down in front of an iMac and something incredible happens: The world around you seems to disappear, and you lose yourself in the big, beautiful display. To create an experience this immersive, we pushed every limit, rethought every detail, and advanced iMac in the most astonishing ways.

Features:

Design

  • The ultimate all-in-one. Honed to the cutting edge
The first iMac was a revolution: An all-in-one computer that put everything — display, processor, graphics, storage, memory, and more — inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Countless innovations later, we've raised the bar yet again. iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we've ever built, and it's filled with the latesthigh-performance technologies. Yet it's just 5 mm thin at its edge with up to 40 percent less volume than the previous generation. To do all that required unprecedented feats of engineering — and imagination. We invented new technologies, pioneered new manufacturing techniques, and devised all-new ways to do more in less space.
  • Innovations at the molecular level
One of the biggest challenges our engineers faced with this design was how to join the front to the back. The enclosure is so thin, it's not possible to weld the pieces using traditional methods. So we searched far and wide for other ideas, and we found one in a process called friction-stir welding. It's commonly used on airplane wings, rocket booster tanks, and other parts that simply can't fail. This process uses a combination of intense friction-generated heat and pressure to intermix the molecules of the two aluminum surfaces — creating a seamless, precise, and superstrong join. You may not see it, but this iMac wouldn't be possible without it.
  • Now you're closer to the action
The iMac display is not set behind the cover glass — it's right up against it. The LCD itself is 5 mm thinner than before, and we used an advanced process called full lamination to eliminate a 2-mm gap between the LCD and the glass, something that has never been done on a display this large. Although it may not seem like much, those few millimeters are enough to make images look as if they're leaping off the glass.
  • 75 percent less reflection
Full lamination has a second major benefit: It eliminates the reflection of light off the LCD panel and off the back of the display's cover glass. But we also figured out how to reduce reflection off the front of the glass without compromising color quality. Instead of applying an antireflective coating to the glass in a conventional way, we adapted a process used on smaller surfaces like camera lenses and fighter pilots' helmets. It's called plasma deposition, and it involves coating the glass with layers of silicon dioxide and niobium pentoxide so precise and so thin they're measured in atoms. The result: an astounding 75 percent reduction in reflectivity — and vibrant, accurate colors.
  • Individually calibrated for true-to-life color
None of these innovations would matter much if the iMac display didn't deliver vivid, true-to-life color. Which is why we put every single display through an exacting color-calibration process using three state-of-the-artspectroradiometers: one to measure gamma, one to measure white point, and one to check the work of the other two. This equipment is tuned to meet color standards recognized around the world for precision and accuracy.
  • More energy efficient
Not only does this iMac offer higher performance than any previous iMac, it's also more energy efficient, using up to 50 percent less energy in the idle state with the display on. And its hardware components work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve even more power.
  • Friendly to the environment
The environmentally friendly iMac is free of many harmful toxins, including mercury, arsenic, BFRs, and PVC. It's also made from materials such as aluminum and glass, which are more likely to be recycled and reused.
  • Highly rated designs
As a a result of all our efforts, iMac meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR 5.2 qualification. And it has earned the highest rating of Gold from EPEAT, which evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and manufactured.*

Performance

  • Core i5 and Core i7 processors
The fourth-generation quad-core Intel Core i5 processor — based on the latest Haswell architecture — is standard on iMac. It's available at a clock speed of up to 3.4GHz. Or configure iMac with a quad-coreIntel Core i7 at up to 3.5GHz. Since OS X is designed to take advantage of each core, iMac captures every bit of performance from the processor. OS X also supports Hyper-Threading in the Core i7, allowing two threads to run simultaneously on each core — giving you eight virtual cores of processing power.
  • Turbo boost 2.0
Say you're using a processor-intensive application like Aperture or Final Cut Pro that benefits from extra power. Turbo Boost 2.0 automatically increases the speed of the active cores, so the Core i7, for example, can offer up to 3.9GHz. And by shifting core frequency in small increments, Turbo Boost allows the processor to manage performance without sacrificing efficiency. All this takes place behind the scenes, so your work — and play — goes smoother and faster.
  • New NVIDIA graphics. Next-generation Speed
iMac graphics have gotten even more powerful across the board. NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics processors are faster than the previous generation and include double the video memory. That translates into more frames per second, smoother animation, and better responsiveness when you're using graphics-intensive apps like 3D games,high-resolution photo and video editors, and more. If you choose the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB of video memory on the 27-inch iMac, you get the best graphics performance available in an all-in-onecomputer. And if you go with the 2.7GHz iMac, it comes with integrated Intel Iris Pro, which delivers discrete graphics-level performance.
  • Faster Fusion drive. High capacity meets higher performance
Available as a configurable option at the Apple Online Store, Fusion Drive is now up to 50 percent faster.2 It's a breakthrough concept that combines the high storage capacity of a traditional hard drive with the high performance of flash storage. With Fusion Drive in your iMac, disk-intensivetasks — from booting up to launching apps to importing photos — are faster and more efficient. That's because frequently used items are kept at the ready on speedy flash storage, while infrequently accessed items go to the hard drive. The file transfers take place in the background, so you won't even notice. As the system learns how you work, Fusion Drive makes your Mac experience even better. For maximum performance, you can also configure your iMac with up to 1TB of flash storage that's now up to 50 percent faster than the previous generation.
  • 802.11ac Wi-Fi. The new defintion of fast
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, iMac takes desktop Wi-Fi speeds over the top. When it's connected to an 802.11ac base station — including the new AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule — you can reach data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps.4 That's triple the previous 802.11n standard, which means you'll get up to three times faster Wi-Fi.5 You also get double the channel bandwidth, with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for more data to flow faster than ever.
  • Thunderbolt I/O. It's all about speed and versatility. And Speed
With one tiny port, you get superfast data transfer speeds and huge expansion capabilities. Thunderbolt features two 10-Gbps data channels per port, which means data transfer is up to twice as fast as USB 3 and up to 12 times faster than FireWire 800. And don't worry about a single drive or peripheral tying up a Thunderbolt port: You can daisy-chain as many as six devices plus a display. All iMac models include two Thunderbolt ports for even more expansion possibilities.
  • Storage
1TB hard drives are now standard across the entire iMac line.6 You can maximize your storage by configuring the 27-inch iMac with a drive up to 3TB in capacity. Or choose up to 1TB of flash storage (up to 512GB on the 21.5-inch model). For the best of both worlds, choose the Fusion Drive option in 1TB or 3TB capacities.
  • Memory
The 21.5-inch iMac comes with 8GB of memory and can be configured online with 16GB. On the 27-inchiMac, 8GB of memory comes standard, and you can upgrade to 16GB or 32GB. Configure and buy your iMac at the Apple Online Store and it will arrive with the memory already installed. Or add more memory to the 27-inch model yourself by popping open the easy-to-access memory panel on the back.

OSX

  • Hardware and software made for each other
Since the software built into every Mac is created by the same company that makes the Mac, you get a fully integrated system in which everything works together perfectly. OS X works with the processor in your Mac to deliver the best possible performance. It works with the Multi-Touch trackpad in Mac notebooks so they feel natural to use. Power Nap takes advantage of the Mac hardware to keep the entire system up to date while it sleeps.1 And OS X gives you long battery life by working with the computer's built-in sensors to dim the screen in low-light conditions and even regulating processor activity between keystrokes.
  • Multi-touch, Mac style
Use your fingers to tap, scroll, pinch, and swipe your way around the Mac. Because Apple makes both the hardware and software, Multi-Touch gestures are remarkably precise. This precision makes Multi-Touch the most natural and intuitive way to use a computer. When you scroll down on your trackpad or Magic Mouse, your document scrolls down. When you scroll up, your web page scrolls up. When you swipe left, your photos move left. These and many more gestures make all you do on your Mac easier, intuitive, and fun.
  • It's remarkably simple
From the desktop you see when you start up your Mac to the applications you use every day, everything is designed to be easy and intuitive. And it all makes perfect sense, especially if you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. The desktop is clean and simple. It takes one click to open an app and a few more to buy, download, and install new apps from the Mac App Store. On a Mac, it's easy to find, share, and do just about everything. And a Mac does so many things automatically, sometimes you don't have to do anything at all.
  • It's incredibly powerful
Making powerful things simple requires some seriously advanced technologies. OS X is loaded with them. It's built on a rock-solid, time-tested UNIX foundation that provides unparalleled stability and industry-leading support for Internet standards. And the incredible graphics performance in OS X allows applications like Aperture and Final Cut Pro to give you unprecedented photo and video editing capabilities. OS X is engineered to take advantage of the latest technologies in every Mac
  • It's easy to get around
On the Mac, everything is right at your fingertips, right where you need it. The Dock is a handy place for all your favorite apps. From the Dock, you can launch apps quickly and switch between them easily. If an app isn't on the Dock, you'll find it in Launchpad. Go there to see all the apps on your Mac full screen and organize them however you like. And Mission Control gives you a bird's-eye view of all your open windows, so you can keep track of everything you're working on. OS X offers systemwide support for gorgeous, full-screen apps that use every inch of your Mac display. You can have multiple full-screen apps open at once — along with multiple apps in windows. And it's easy to switch between full-screen and desktop views.
  • Find, organize, and share files fast
The finder helps you find, organize, and access practically everything on your Mac. And features like Spotlight and Quick Look make locating the file you're looking for effortless — even if you don't know what it's called. Say you're searching for a document, and the only thing you recall about it is the phrase "surrealist painters." Open Spotlight, start typing "surrealist painters," and your Mac generates a list of files that contain those words. And with Quick Look, you don't need to open an application to know you've found the right file — just hit the space bar and you'll see a full-size preview. Want to share a file with someone nearby? Just drag and drop to send it wirelessly with AirDrop.
  • iCloud. It's how Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch work even better together
Sign in once with your Apple ID on your new Mac, and iCloud is automatically set up in all the apps that use it.2 So if you have iCloud set up on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, whatever you do on your Mac happens on those devices, too. And it works the other way around. Update something on another device, and the same update will be made on your Mac. So your mail, contacts, calendars, messages, documents, data, and more go wherever you go. From your Mac to your iPhone to your iPad and back to your Mac.
  • Safety. Built right in.
Every mac is designed with powerful, advanced technologies that work together to constantly scrutinize, encrypt, update — and ultimately keep your Mac safer. For starters, OS X is built on a proven, secure UNIX foundation. It also includes a host of features designed to protect your Mac and the information on it. Gatekeeper makes it safer to download and install apps. FileVault safeguards data using powerful encryption. Find My Mac helps you locate your missing Mac on a map, set a passcode remotely, and more. Customizable privacy settings keep your personal information under your control. And the best way to keep your Mac up to date with the latest security features? Just install software updates with a click.
  • Windows compatibility
The versatility and power of OS X help a Mac fit in just about anywhere — including Windows networks. Want to transfer your files, photos, and other data from a Windows PC? OS X lets you do that easily. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that, too.3 OS X has built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and keep all your messages, meetings, and contacts in one place. OS X works with virtually all of today's digital cameras, printers, and other peripherals without the need to manually download separate drivers. And it opens popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and PDF, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.
  • Accessible innovation
OS X comes standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer, including many features you won't find in other operating systems — at any price. For example, built-in VoiceOver screen-reading technology, available in over 20 languages, makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computers using key commands or gestures on a Multi-Touch trackpad. OS X also offers out-of-the-box support for more than 40 braille displays (including Bluetooth displays) and many other accessibility features, such as dynamic full-screen magnification, playback of closed captions, and a scalable screen.
  • Built-In apps you'll use every day
OS X comes in a single version that includes a collection of Apple-designed applications. Not only do they let you surf the web, make FaceTime video calls, send messages, manage your contacts, and accomplish other day-to-day tasks, they also work together to make you more productive — and let you have more fun.

Comments about Apple 27" iMac 3.2GHz Desktop Computer:

Average computer and can be frustrating if you are only familiar with iOS or windows. Trying to sync iCloud on the Mac (to iPhone and IPad) is not seamless and doesn't work as well as advertised. I was disappointed because the operating system hasn't really changed that much from OS X. I'm sure I'll be happier once I become more familiar with the system. Looks great.

Comments about Apple 27" iMac 3.2GHz Desktop Computer:

Having used a PC for 20+ years, I was a bit hesitant to make the switch and I really didn't think there was very much difference between a Mac and PC. Man, was I wrong! Everything that I read about Mac is true and I'm so happy I made the switch.

Comments about Apple 27" iMac 3.2GHz Desktop Computer:

Great product, and Abt was very good on delivering the goods. Be advised, the 27" screen is big, so you may want to consider this if you are close to the monitor on a desk. Coming from a PC (but having an iPhone and iPad), the learning curve isn't bad, either.
