Was moving into a new place and didn't want to buy a bunch of furniture, so decided to refinish some old stuff & make some. Was moving from overseas so basically had zero tools with me. This was one of the first tools I bought after a lot of research, and even though it's more expensive than many sanders you see, it is well worth the premium. Dust collection is excellent, in fact if I need to sand something around the house will reach for this often as it creates way less dust than using a piece of sandpaper. Variable speed, which I thought would be a gimmick, is actually very useful. As I didn't have many other tools I tended to 'abuse' this one by using it for all sorts of stuff it really isn't design for (rounding edges, smoothing curves, etc). Always worked great. It's worthwhile finding the hard baseplate if you can too, can then use this for more serious material removal. Carrying case holds tool + some sandpaper. The sandpaper in envelopes doesn't fit too well though, they should have made a little more room to hold extra sandpaper I think. Use by my girlfriend as well a lot, she found it pretty comfortable, and liked the variable speed as she was more comfortable with it set a little slower.

Difficult to clean after heavy usage. Left swirl marks; I am a very experienced woodworker.

This tool doesn't cut my steak.
Comments about Bosch Tools 5" Palm Random Orbit Sander Kit:
So, I was looking at a bunch of reviews on this sander and noticed a trend in the lower ratings. This review is to state that - if used correctly - this sander is an excellent sander. The primary purpose of this sander is heavier finishing, not stripping. If you want to strip stain or heavy paint, or smooth out a very rough surface, obviously you need a higher powered sander. Like a belt sander. Or a chisel or hand plane. Every single sander out there will bog down if enough force is applied to it, as well. With this sander, you shouldn't even be applying any force to it. Just let the weight of the sander do the work for you, with very small amounts of even pressure here and there, if at all needed. People will inevitably use it for tasks it's not designed for, and thus give it a bad review. If you use it correctly, it will perform exactly how you would expect it to. I've used mine - as a finishing sander - every single day for the past year and a half and with a bit of unavoidable maintenance here and there, and it works just as well as the day I bought it. I've also used my higher powered belt sander for stripping and roughing now for around 6 years - nearly every single day. Still works - and it's a brand that's not nearly at the quality level of Bosch tools. It's all in how you use it - every tool has a specific task, and this tool does it's specific task very well. Very obvious analogy here, but you shouldn't use a wrench to cut your steak.

This sander is very nice. Hook and loop system is easy and changing discs is a snap. The variable speed feature is nice . The dust filter and box really does a good job. I couldn't believe how much dust came out of that filter. Excellent product.

Since I bought this orbital I've used the attachment for a dust free area and it worked very well. The variable speed on this sander is a good feature.

Bought this last year and I am still very happy with this unit. The adjustable speed control and ease of removing the filter to hook up to a shop vac is a plus. Also like that it is very comfortable to use. Keep up the good work Bosch!!!

I've always been one to hand sand my projects, but this time I decided to buy a sander. After reading the reviews of this Bosch, I decided to go with it. I have no regrets with my purchase other than wishing I'd bought one sooner. It does a great job and my arms are not warn out from the sanding.
Great random Orbit Sander.

So far have used it to sand between varnish coats and am very satisfied with it. My old sander would over rev if you took it of the surface you were sanding for even a second, leaving a mark where it touched back down . also it took forever to quit rotating after you turned the switch off. The Bosch is much better in this regard. Haven't used the dust filter as it was hooked to my shop vac. Wish that connection was a twist lock of sometime as I ended up taping vacuum hose to it as slip connection was kind of loose. also wish there was an 8 hole apaptor to use with Abranet disks as I had many of those on hand when my old sander died.
