Since I purchased this router I have used it nearly daily, often for work I never would have thought would require a router. Basically a lot of little things that could have otherwise become major headaches become small tasks, e.g. someone cuts an asymmetrical piece of siding with the lap-joints on the wrong side, the router can provide a satisfying remedy of the situation without wasting the entire sheet of siding. The point is that a router is a great and highly enabling tool... With regards to this router combo pack my first impression was amazing, I unpacked it, plugged it in, closed the switch and couldn't resist a smile; the sound of the motor was free of all sorts of harsh noises that most power tools emit and even better, aside from a smooth input of torque at the grips, this tool wasn't vibrating all over the place. Turning up the revs with the dial doesn't change any of this...it gets louder, but in a way that feels linear and controlled. It altogether sounds and feels like a well-made and well-balanced tool, which makes for both pleasant use and more control at the workpiece. In use it works perfectly. I have had no complaints so far with the way the tool performs. It has done everything I have come up with without flaw. I would, however, add that I am an advocate for design features which make a whole work process smoother...little things like keeping all of the parts for a tool together at a crowded work site. This router pack comes with a good case, but it could be better, e.g. by having a separate closeable sub-compartment to hold the dozen or so hardware pieces required for putting the router under a router table. Also the plastic guard on the fixed-base has to be removed and set down if you want to change bits...small, clear, plastic pieces that get set down at a work site have a way of getting broken or lost. I usually just pop the motor out of the base to make changes to avoid this, it's easy enough and this ease is one of the reasons to applaud this design for doing most things very well. Overall I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates quality tools and the quality work that they perform.

I have owned the router for over 6 years now, and have used it extensively at times in and out of a router table. The router is one of those products that just feels like a quality product as soon as you pick it up. The variable speed works well, and the height adjustment is very precise. The motor is adequately strong for a variety of bits and materials. As noted by another user, the switch position is not conveniently placed especially when placed under a router table. Unfortunately, this otherwise excellent router has a major weakness -- the power switch. When used in a router table, the switch fills with saw dust and eventually stops working, so the router cannot be turned back on. This has happened a number of times, and can be temporarily fixed by removing the dust from the switch. I thought Bosch would have fixed the switch issue by now, so I called customer support, and explained my problem. To my surprise, the customer support person was very reluctant to assist me given the age of the router. I was eventually able to convince the support person to at least send me a new swtich, so I could do the replacement myself. When the new switch arrived, it was exactly like the one already in the unit. It too has failed, which I can temporarily fix by taking apart the router, dumping the dust out of the switch, and reassembling. I am generally a fan of Bosch tools, and have several other Bosch tools including the excellent glide miter saw. If it weren't for the switch problem, I would rate the router much higher for effectiveness and value.

Ease of set-up and adjustment

Comments about Bosch Tools 2.25 HP VS Router Combo Kit:
I am currently building an Executive desk for our son which calls for multiple shaker style rail and stile joints on the pedestals. I have the router mounted on the Bosch RA1181 table and with this combination I have had excellent results and a perfect fit every time. I especially like the feature of fine tuning using the through table. Only wish I had purchased this quality set-up years ago.

Well built and easy to use

It's a well made router. It performs very well, it's easy to handle, and it has enough power to handle the tougher species of wood. The clear plastic shield can collect dust and make it hard to see sometimes when working freehand, but a coat of good wax every now and then stops that. I bought a 1611 EVS when they first came out on the market many years ago and it works as well today as it did when it was new! I expect the same experience from this one. In other words, I see the same level of quality built into the 1617EVSPK as I did when I bought the 1611EVS.

I really love this router. It is easy to swap bases, light weight, and quick to change bits. The router is well made and rugged. This router will be a long time part of my workshop.
Bosch plunge router

My woodworking instructor suggested having my own plunge router for router joinery class. This router met all of his requirements: Powerful, good plunging depth, can turn on & off while holding handles
Works very well.

I use it in a table router.

I have the the 1617EVS for about 10 years. Great router. Went underwater in Storm Sandy, washed it in fresh water, dried it out and to this day still works. I liked it so much I bought a second 1617EVS.
Simple to use

I was amazed on how easy this product was to use and the quality of work it produces. My wife asked me to build a small coffee table. I was able to finish the edges of the table top with my router to add some style to it. I then used the plunger to engrave a heart in the middle of the table to personalize it for her. The dust collecter worked great and made my clean up so much easier. I am loving this router and looking forward to more challenges with it.
